Three Days Grace is better in my opinion because they are "harder." Maroon 5 is fine and all, but their songs are so gentle and I don't like that music unless it's done by a really good group and Maroon 5 is not that.

Of the two, I prefer Three Days Grace.  I don't like Maroon 5 because I hear other people play them too often and it gets annoying.  I don't consider myself much of a metal fan, but I know TDG is less intense than many other bands (As I Lay Dying is about as hardcore as I care to get).  Metal's not really my genre, but I enjoy it from time to time.  I don't think I've ever actually liked pop.

My vote goes to Three Days Grace. I like some of Maroon 5's songs... but not that many. Three Days Grace, however? I like many more of their songs. My favorite, I'd say, is "Animal I have Become".
