Self defense is not a sin, what is a sin however, is the harm we do not protect ourselves from.

I'm really glad you made a thread on this topic. I've been thinking about this myself. I know that no one is allowed to attack someone else but what if they were attacked first? It's like for school, when someone tries to hit you, but you hit them, you get in trouble even though you were just protecting yourself. So if you were outside and someone mugged you and shortly they were going to kill you, but you had a knife (I don't know why) so you just stabbed them. You'd still have to go to jail even though all you did was protect yourself. This question I believe is truly up to the people. There are multiple people who do think this is a sin but I personally don't. Protecting yourself may not always require killing someone in the process but if it truly does then I don't believe that it is a sin.

The bible or whatever says "If they hit you on the cheek, let them hit you over the other cheek." Something like that.

But considering it's self defense and not a dumb dude intent on killing someone, I would imagine it would be okay. If you really felt bad about it, you could always ask someone to forgive you.....

I believe that if you defend yourself from harm it isn't a sin. If you kill them when you could simply have detained them, for example if you took a gun away from them and shot them in the head instead of the knee, then it's almost as good as murder. Otherwise, if you don't defend yourself and let yourself come to harm it's the same as suicide. Turning the other cheek applies more to verbal abuse or bullying, not threats upon your life. Jesus died for us, we don't need to be martyrs and die too to get to heaven, he accomplished that so we don't have to.

I dont think it is a sin it's just defending your self from getting hurt.

ok god bless u. i dont really know self defense is a sin i think it is though becuz when jesus was getting hurt in the cross jesus wasnt like fighting back or huring them with his fist so for me is a sin, make god power with u

There is no way that self defense is a sin. Just like fighting in a war isn't a sin.

I don't think it's a sin. I think the lack of faith we have in God to protect us in battle is a sin.

Well it's a sin but Id say if somebody is trying to kill you that's your only option unless you wanna die.

No way! The Bible does not require us to passively endure attacks from assailants. If someone breaks into our home or threatens our lives, we have a biblical and legal right to defend ourselves with deadly force if needed.

"If a thief is caught in the act of breaking into a house and is killed in the process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty" (Exodus 22:2 NLT).

What makes killing in self-defense allowable in the view of the law and the Bible is the reality that you are actually defending your own life against attack. It normally takes a jury to figure out whether you were the aggressor or shared in initiating the deadly conflict. -I got this from the internet.

Do what you can to defuse the situation. If diplomacy fails and you end up having to use force to save yourself, or if you don't feel diplomacy would have even had a chance, do what you can to save who you can. If you feel you sinned because you were protecting yourself, then don't. If you feel bad about it you can always pray about it.

Think of it this way: does God love you? Will he want you to suffer a beat-down if you are able to defend yourself? If you are able to defend yourself, do so.

the police say self defense is only applicable when using reasonable force, for example if someone says give me your money with no weapon, killing that person would be wrong.

now say if the person was holding a gun to your close family and didnt know you were behind him and you had just got a kitchen knife, he's about to pull the trigger what would you do with the knife. I dont think id have the guts to but at that moment you'd be filled with adrenanline.

i think it is possible to kill in self defense  i know the above scenario is more defense of family then 'self' defense but there are scenarios where killing could be neccesary to survival.

In these instances i dont think killing is a sin but thats the only querie that arises out of self defense, self defense in other lesser instances than this cant be a sin because your blocking attack made on yourself, if self defense was a sin then it would essentially be a sin to preserve your own life when under attack which sounds stupid.
