I find it so important when reading the Bible and actually quoting references to it. As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and those words are powerful, in our lives and in our understanding of God and our Worldview.

That being said, we don't want to attribute or misquote phrases that are NOT in the Bible. Even if the idea is in the Bible, we would want to say want it actually says and not change the meaning by misquoting it.

Here are some pretty common phrases that many people think is in the Bible, when reality it is not. Some may be conceptually correct to the Bible, and some may be completely off.

See if you can figure where these phrases were originated or which verse did it misquote. If you have more, post it up.

The Three Wisemen

"Moderation in all things"

"The Lord (or God) works in mysterious ways"

"The eye is a window to the soul"

The Apple in the Garden of Eden.

"The lion will lay down with the lamb"

"A fool and his money are soon parted"

"Spare the rod, spoil the child."

"This too shall pass"

The Seven Deadly Sins

"Money is the root of all evil"

"Pride comes before the fall"

"Charity begins at home"

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

"To thine ownself be true"

"Cleanliness is next to godliness"

"God helps those who help themselves"

I do agree. This can be used as a highly deceptive tool. We always gotta go back to scripture.

I didn't know people thought most of these were from the bible.

So they never said it was an apple in the garden? Was it just referred to as a fruit?

Another for the list would be that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. If I remember correctly it was just a big fish or something. It's been awhile lol

Another one would be The Lord's Prayer

Jesus' disciples asked Him to teach them how to pray, so He said to them "When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins. For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." (Luke 11:2-4)

While this is referred to as the Lord's Prayer, Jesus didn't have need to ask for forgiveness of sins. So technically this is the "Christian's Prayer."

Spare the rod, spoil the child Proverbs 13:24, 22:15, 23: 13-14, 29:15.
God helps those who help themselves Romans 5:6, 8, Proverbs 28:26, Jeremiah 17:5. The truth is that God helps those who can't help themselves.
Money is the root of all evil 1 Timothy 6:10 says the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself.

Depends on how you look at it. I don't think God does anything for people who don't at the very least ask him for help or seek him somehow.

The eye is the window to the soul: This is nowhere in the Bible, it's referring to "The eye is the lamp of the body" (Matthew 6:22, Luke 11:34)

This to shall pass: While this sounds like it would be in the Bible because it gives us hope, it isn't biblical. Romans 5:3,4 says ...we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Thus the Christians suffering produces hope for the kingdom of God. If we just take relief in the temporary end to an earthly trial or circumstance(s), then we are settling in comfort of the wrong thing.

The seven deadly sins
*Gluttony
*Greed
*Sloth
*Lust
*Vanity
*Envy
*Wrath
While these are all sins that are listed as condemned in the Bible, they're not listed anywhere in any such grouping. But a similarity in Proverbs 6:16-19 reveals, These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. These (14) are all clearly sins despised by the Lord, but none of them are able to keep one from salvation if he will only repent and believe.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you: This parallels in Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31-36, it's sentiment is biblical.

To thine own self be true: Biblically, we can only trust our conscience to guide us as far as it is being informed by the Holy Spirit. Mankind, of their natural selves, are entirely corrupted; and so, to hold true to themselves would be a poor choice. Rather, we should seek God in prayer and ask Him to guide us in the paths of righteousness. Psalms 23:3 says, He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake.

Zamiel : You're right, the book of Jonah never actually says a whale.
Which is actually because it couldn't be a whale... their throats are too small. So it was only a fish. No whale.
Also, it did not say an apple... just a fruit. I once heard that a pomegranate is actually a good guess, seeing as the thick skin would take determination to get through, and would give the eater time to think about what they're doing... but that's all still speculation.
