Before I begin, I will briefly unravel what each doctrine means. Eternal damnation means that nonbelievers are tormented in Hell for eternity, and will be in constant torment for the rest of time. Annihilationism means that nonbelievers are tormented, but they will in time be destroyed by the hellfire. Universal reconciliation means that nonbelievers will be tormented but after while, they will be forgiven and in time go to Heaven. (Note that aside from what doctrine you believe in, it is indisputable that Satan, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the worshipers of the Antichrist will be tormented for eternity).

Anyways, I believe in annihiliationism. The sake of this is that there are a few bible verses that seem to hint at this:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%206:23&version=NASB

(This bible verse tells us that the wages of sin is death.)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=isaiah%2066:24&version=NASB

(This bible verse mentions dead bodies.)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelations%2020:14&version=NASB

(This bible verse says that the lake of fire is the second death.)

If anybody is curious about my denomination, I am currently looking into being an Adventist; not a Seventh Day Adventist, but a regular Adventist, as in the followers of the Advent Christian Church. Eastern Orthodoxy interests me as well. But putting that aside, I would enjoy knowing what other Christians' beliefs about Hell are, and why.

I think the closest version to what I believe would be universal reconciliation.... but not exactly.

I would explain more what I believe, but it's kind of complicated.... I don't really care to take the time

I don't believe in any of those. I believe what I want to believe and god can believe what he wants to believe. Sending me to hell for a difference in opinion reveals who the real devil is.

As much as I'd hate to say this, I think it's eternal damnation... your first verse isn't referring to hell, it's referring to literally death because of sin and the punishment is hell. Though, that doesn't mean you'll die out or burn away or something in hell. Your second verse... i don't exactly think it's that relevant... but idk for sure. As for your third, Hell is known as the second death. It doesn't mean that it literally kills you and destroys you. Hell is eternal. Whether you like it or not, if you end up in hell, you'll burn forever. There's no turning back. That's the point of it. It's supposed to be a place of "weeping and gnashing of teeth", a place of eternal suffering. That's why you need to be saved. If universal reconciliation is true, then wouldn't people take it for granted? and just say "Oh, I'll just be forgiven eventually, so I can live my life as evilly as I want. I wouldn't matter at all". I think that's definitely not the case. It's "Eternal death", as opposed to eternal life, in heaven with Jesus.
This is what I think. This is a rather serious topic in my opinion, and I don't think this should be taken lightly(not saying you're taking it lightly). I hope my reasons and opinion doesn't offend you or make you angry -.-... I don't mean to if you do feel that way.

Why would god feed the devil? It would be like the devil sending god angels does not make much sense unless god is the devil cause he controls both.

JigSaw : I always wondered about that myself. God and Satan are supposed to hate each other why would they be working together to punish the sins of man? Or is Satan more of a disgruntled employee?

I always saw it as the Devil being the warden of a prison. Why would God trust a prison full of evil people to his enemy who is supposed to be evil himself? I know I wouldn't and that's one of the reasons for why I think they would most likely be on the same side. Lucifer was most likely made out to be an evil being so people would fear him and his prison. I don't think it would be eternal death either. More like you stay there till you realize some great truth or something sort of like the universal reconciliation thing mentioned above. This is all theoretical to me.

It's not that Hell is Satan's punishment "too." Hell was designed for Satan. I can't back this up, but I believe that Satan wants to drag as many human souls in to Hell as he can because he wants to hurt God. Remember that Jesus openly cried when people wouldn't believe that he could forgive sins. Imagine how he must feel when people actively refuse to be forgiven.

But yes, Jesus's sacrifice and forgiveness means nothing if people are eventually destroyed or if they're retroactiely forgiven after only a brief punishment. The Bible even says that the only sin that can not be pardoned is refusal of Jesus's forgiveness, and there's a reason for it. His forgiveness was given freely. It's a gift, but it's a gift you have to accept. If you don't accept it, you accept the consequences instead.

Jesus, an immortal spirit who COULD have spent all eternity happy in heaven, DIED for YOUR wrongdoings. If forgiveness was granted whether you took it or not then what would be the point?

So, I'm sorry, I have to say eternal damnation. Although to be honest, I don't see the difference between that and annihilationism. Being reduced to an abyss seems just as bad as a pit of fire or a place of eternal emotional torment any day.

I don't think we fully comprehend the extent of the mercy that God can provide for humanity. I think it's ignorant and unfair to think that God would condemn anyone to hell that didn't understand God's plan for humanity and their place in it.

Although I also believe Jesus when he said, "In my Father's house there are many mansions". I don't think Heaven is only for the the righteous but also for many people who sinned without a spiritual knowledge of right and wrong. Can we really blame a lot of the people in the world for the way they are when they are simply emulating their environments. While I think the people who were righteous and chose to live good lives will be rewarded differently than those who did not. Salvation is a free gift, but I think there are other rewards that we receive based on our actions and choices in life.

I also believe that there is a period between this earthly life and the final judgment and placement into heaven or hell. I believe there is a temporary holding place for all the spirits/souls of the people who have lived where they/we reside prior to the second coming and resurrection.

Basically what I'm saying is that God is a perfect judge and it is his job to decide who is and isn't worthy of returning to heaven and I imagine that a LOT more people will be going back than we think. I also believe that there are very few people who will receive eternal damnation and suffering for their sins.

I believe the bible is in clear that hell is forever. You can't die if you're a spirit.

Crawldragon : Yes, that is what I meant. My bad. And the difference between the two is that one says you stay and suffer forever, and the other says that you will suffer but eventually perish completely.
geeogree : No offense, but I think that God has already shown quite a lot of mercy. Jesus, came down to earth, became a man, and sacrificed Himself on the cross for us. So that now, if we believe and trust in Him, we can have eternal life. I think that's already pretty big when it comes to mercy. Except for a select few(babies, people with mental disabilities and the like), everyone should have an understanding of right and wrong. But then again, some people would have never heard of Jesus because of where they are(in the jungle or in an isolated area). It's debatable, but then again, what are missionaries for? They are so that the people who haven't heard of Jesus can hear about him, and maybe accept Him as their savior and become Christians. If people could just get saved from hell after death, then once again, people could take it for granted, and missionaries wouldn't really be needed, now would they? There are other rewards for people who have done things for God, but it doesn't mean that if you're just a good person, you go to heaven. Good works and deeds alone don't get you into heaven, in fact, there hasn't really been a true good person other than Jesus. All of us have broken most, if not all of the Ten Commandments at least once in our lifetimes. So, in God's standards, we all have no place in heaven. But that's what Jesus came for, to save us. So, God is a perfect judge. But he has already laid down his standards for who goes and who doesn't go to hell.

mdynasty926 : You know, that's really cruel.
So the nicest person who does no wrong, works hard, helps strangers, etc, will go to hell and die if he doesnt believe in a man who lives in the sky?
Or would he come under "people with mental disabilities"?
That's discrimination that is. And religious persecution.

DarkHyren: "All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." (Romans 3:12) Because no one is good enough to go to heaven, that is why we need God's forgiveness.

To All: We need to understand God's attributes to understand hell.

God is a just judge, and he will judge the world in righteousness (Psalm 9:8; 96:13) By His judgment, who deserves to go to hell?

"But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur." (Revelation 21:8; Ephesians 5:5; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

One may be thinking...wait...that sounds like everyone? Yes, everyone deserves to go to hell, because no one is good enough to go to heaven. There is "no one that does good" (Psalm 14:1)

But God is also merciful, which is why Jesus died on the cross for our sin, and offer us eternal life. If they repent and put their trust in Jesus, they would accept the gift of eternal life, and Jesus' sacrifice would be in substitute of what we deserve. If those refuse to turn to God and continue to rely on themselves to deal with their own eternal destiny, they won't do it on their own, will fail, and get what they deserve from their sins, which is eternal damnation in hell.

Annihilationism is not biblical, because hell is eternal. (Revelation 20:10) Those that are sent to hell will suffer eternal punishment, not destroyed that they would cease to exist. (Matthew 25:46)

Universal Reconciliation is not biblical, because if God forgave everyone for what they have done without "the fine being paid," God would not be just, and that would go against His attributes. Also, people have already receive second chances every day. There will not be a second chance after death. "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9:27)

Both Annihilationism and Universal Reconciliation are not Biblical and are flawed ideas of hell.

DarkHyren : First, I want to ask you, how is this religious persecution or discrimination? Am I pushing my beliefs to anyone? I'm only telling them about my beliefs because they have some issues with it. I'm not condemning people because they don't believe in eternal damnation. How can you accuse me of something like that? This is about doctrines. A lot more people believe in this doctrine DH. If i'm a religious persecutor, you're going to have to call probably half of this whole religion persecutors, because that's basically what you're saying. You could also call every other religion persecution then because they believe what they think is right. They also tell people in order to convince them that their doctrine or religion is the correct one. Does that mean their discriminating people? No! that only means they want to convince people.
And second, name one person that does NO WRONG. I'd like to see you try. Eternal damnation means that strictly, if you don't believe in Jesus as your personal savior and trust in Him, you go to hell. End of story. God doesn't force you to believe in Him. He gives you a choice. It's free, all you have to do, is believe in Him, trust in Him, and live your life as a Christian, repenting your sins. People who don't have the ability to decide(babies or very young children, or the mentally disabled. I don't suppose you can say babies have knowledge of right or wrong. They would be saved automatically if they died because they can't decide for themselves, and mentally disabled too. It's not their fault. They can't decide for themselves, so they would probably be saved too.) I don't see how this is discrimination or religious persecution.
I can't believe you'd call me something like that. This thread is meant for discussion or even debate. So I'm just sharing my beliefs and backing them up. Nothing wrong with that.

I am discussing it.

"Eternal damnation means that strictly, if you don't believe in Jesus as your personal savior and trust in Him, you go to hell."
That's how it's discrimination and religious persecution.
I wasn't directing it at you, but at the belief.

"God doesn't force you to believe in Him. He gives you a choice. It's free, all you have to do, is believe in Him, trust in Him, and live your life as a Christian, repenting your sins."
And if you don't, you go to hell. That's not choice, that's blackmail.
That's like me saying "here, eat this really disgusting food that makes you vomit for three days or I'll kill you".

"And second, name one person that does NO WRONG. I'd like to see you try"
There are personal rights and wrong, religious rights and wrongs and real rights and wrongs.
Not all of those are the same thing. Sure, your belief might tell you they are, but that's your opinion.
Doesn't make it fact.
So while I can't tell you of a person that has never done any wrongs by those standards, I could find plenty of people that have done no or little wrong from a moral standing.

In the words of George Carlin: "Religion easily has the greatest bulls*** story ever told. Think about it, religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you."

mdynasty926 : The second verse is relevant, because when Jesus spoke of Hell in the Gospel of Mark, he told of a place where a worm does not die and an unquenchable fire. That said, Jesus likely got that from this bible verse. As for the third verse, i do not understand how death would mean anything other than ceasing to live. I would be willing to accept eternal damnation as the true Hell; it is just that I am seriously not convinced. But I can tell you surely that I would never believe in universal reconciliation, the Revelation to John says that some people's part is the lake of fire and brimstone, and to me it is giving people false hope to believe that everyone can go to Heaven. God was merciful enough for Jesus to die for our sins, so that we may have a chance to go to Heaven. But it is up to us to accept that salvation.

mdynasty926 : you really didn't understand what I was saying at all.

DarkHyren : I agree with you for the most part. The typical Christian view of how you get to Heaven is flawed. Their ideas don't represent a loving, merciful God at all. If you treat your friends well you're not a good person. It's how you treat those that hate you that matters most.

geeogree : Read my post above.

Actually the "typical" Christian view of Heaven and hell shows how loving and merciful God is, in fact, it's the greatest love God can do (1 John 3:16)
