-As long as you aren't hurting the child/unborn child, and as Hypermonkey says: taking the stem cells from the umbilical cord, then there is no reason for anyone to go against this research. It could be the cure for SO many diseases that are killing millions of people. I don't think the baby is going to miss that umbilical cord. It's not like they wear it when they get older anyway.

Actually DarkHyren it is alive. There is a big difference between a parasite and an embryo, BIG BIG DIFFERENCE!! Life begins at conception not at birth. For it to come alive at birth doesn't even make sense. It couldn't even develop if it wasn't alive before birth. Pure and simple, Embryonic stem cell research destroys more life than it gives.

I maybe phrased my first post in this thread poorly, but you obviously didnt read any of the follow up where I explained things in better detail.

No technically a baby might not be considered a parasite, but this is only because of a technicality, that being that a parasite must be of a different species.
However a baby does share all the other definitions of a parasite, so instead is a parasitic organism.
Not exactly a parasite, but only because of one term.
So there is really no difference between the two other then that.

There is NO reason whatsoever to kill anything to get embryonic fluid because nanotechnology has made it possible to tap into ANY embryo and gather enough cells to research, WHILE LEAVING THE EMBYRO INTACT AND HEALTHY.
Because stem cells from the embryo are something like 99% clean of all host dna, and the other 1% can be removed with the same nanotechnology used to gather the cells.

No, It does destroy life. It takes more life than it creates. I read you're posts in full and I don't like it one bit. They kill it to use it. An embryo is a human.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention.

From what Im lead to believe stem cells are able to mimic cells in the body as they develop kinda like an animal will adapt to its environment over time. It can repair damaged nerves and all that jazz is what I have been told. I am all for it. Stem cells have an untapped scientific potential that people need to allow research on. This potential left untapped can do no good for us as human beings. We could be allowing dangerous diseases like cancer to remain uncured forever with what limited resources left to work with. There is a way to harvest stem cells without harming a fetus but from what I know there are different types of stem cells. The most "pure" types come from a developing fetus I believe. Anyhow I have a limited scope of knowledge and before intelligence is brought to play let me just say this. I may not fully understand the way this works but I fully appreciate the levity of not granting science the ability to cure us of diseases that we may be arbitrarily subjected too I.E. cancer. If we put a cap on the research how many of us WILL die from diseases that may be curable?

Scientists in Australia and New Zealand have been constantly doing this research without destroying anything for years.
They dont need to hurt anything, in fact they go out of their way to avoid doing so as stem cells regenerate themselves and yeild more cells to harvest.
This HAS been done and healthy baby animals have been born without any problems.
They dont really do these tests on people, because THEY DONT NEED TOO.

My GF is doing nanotechnology and has access to these types of research papers.
It's not my fault that certain countries are too backwards and behind in science to know the facts.

The real shame is the majority of the research is now done in New Zealand due to the Rudd government getting us into debt

Cal State Long Beach has access to a lot of stuff via the library database subscriptions, so it shouldn't be a problem. I tried looking around earlier but without an article or author name it is just too hard to find anything.

Hoochman : I'm fairly sure that DH is not the ignorant one in this thread. If you actually went through and read all the posts, you would see that you are the one who is mistaken. Stem cell research CAN be performed on an embryo without harm to the embryo, it CAN be done using the cells from the umbilical cord which causes NO harm to ANYONE, the US IS behind most other countries in stem cell research, making most information you find on it from here (assuming you live in the US) is outdated and has already been done.

Also, there is a difference between ignorance and being willfully ignorant. You're lack of any argument other than pure opposition to DH's posts leads me to believe that you are being willfully ignorant, and will disagree just for the sake of disagreement.

Second, I not generally make assumptions, whether good or bad.

Third, I will admit that I act immature a great deal of the time, but rarely on Vizzed, and NEVER about something as serious as this.

Lastly, you are correct in that there are stem cells to be gotten from adults, and that they can be taken without harming said person. However, they also CAN be taken from the umbilical cord, which, as I have already mentioned, harms no one, and it IS possible to take them from embryos without causing harm! You need to actually look some stuff up, rather than just staunchly disagreeing with everyone.
