Welcome everyone to what I’d like to call the “classical” corner. Board games have existed for centuries now and have evolved enormously since their humble and joyful beginnings, and they inspired the birth of videogames via the adaptation of the old cardboards into electronic devices. And in fact, Nintendo themselves started out as a card-maker company in the 19th century before delving into toys and later videogames, which further shows the connection between both worlds now clearly differenced (but still connected nonetheless).

As a community revolving around videogames, it was about time we had a place to talk about the ancestors which served as basis for the current industry. The current world of board games is very extensive, with lots of genres, games for few or several players, simple games to complicated and sophisticated odysseys… It certainly is a world that has everything, and a catalogue that has nothing to envy from the videogame world.

Now that we know what this place is and its reason to be birthed, let’s go with the simple rules of this forum.

So, what can exactly be discussed in this place?

Board games, plain and simple. You can make a thread for every board game you know about, but please refrain from making different threads fo rexpansions and/or different versions even if newly released so as to not duplicate topics.

Do the Good ol’ classics count, even if they are exclusive to a specific region?

Yes, they count. Classics like Poker, Blackjack, Yahtzee or Domino are welcome. HOWEVER be sure to investigate the game in question so as to find its origin and create a single thread for the original game so everyone can discuss the different variations that exist, for example parchisi (and even that one isn’t the original but it’s considered the grandfather of all later versions).

Do RPG games like Dungeons & Dragons count?

Yes, they do. RPGs have in fact evolved beyond simple text and improvisation to include not only the awkward dices but also their own boards and stories. Every single one of them is welcome here.

Do TCG, CCG and LCG count?

Yep, they do. Even if they happen in an enclosed universe where getting something to play isn’t just buying a single box, they’re an evolution of the traditional card games and as such qualify. Since these get updated quite often and can have special collaborations, we’ll have a thread dedicated to each game’s updates.

Can we talk about videogame adaptations of board games?

Once again, yes. Many classic board games have jumped to consoles and PC, even if sometimes they add twists, so they’re perfectly okay to be discussed here either in a single general thread to discuss all adaptations a game has had over the years (preferable) or specifying each adaptation so as to discuss the twists it included over the original game. You may even talk about board games included as a minigame, for example the President version included in Persona 5 Royal.

What about places where we can play board games online?

They’re welcome, and I’d even say you’re encouraged to share them if you know any. Board games are a very useful social tool and maybe you can discover here people to play with. Whether it is a website like boardgamearena or an official app like happens with BOTC, both kinds are welcome to be shared as well as physical places.

Wait, physical places? Are there dedicated spaces to play board games out there?

They do exist, even if they’re hard to find. Some bars have a few board games for customers while others are absolutely dedicated to them. There are also associations and other groups, which may or may not have their own place to play and their own requisites to join. You’re free to talk about any of these, the more we spread the word the better.

You said Poker and Blackjack count and that we can talk about physical or online places to play them, so can we talk about casinos then?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Casinos are adults-only places which are potentially dangerous for some users so they’re forbidden in a family friendly site like Vizzed. Any mention to casinos, be them physical or online, will incur in an immediate ban. Casino games can be played outside them and without the danger of the casinos, and that’s why the games are welcome but the place is not.

What about other kind of media like movies inspired on board games (real ones, not like Jumanji)?

That’s a bit of a grey zone. While they’d be allowed for being on topic, Vizzed has specific places for discussing movies so you were already able to discuss that before this place came to existence. I guess both can coexist, though if you choose to post it here I’d rather have it focused towards the board game it’s inspired on and what twists did they include, leaving the discussion of the actors and special effects and other technical aspects for the Movies forum.

Those would be the rules so far. As always, remember to follow the site’s overall guidelines and be polite to the rest of users, they can madly love a game you heavily detest and that’s not a bad thing. Board games nowadays can have tons of mechanics and they aren’t better or worse, each of us simply likes them more or less.

This is fun! I have always loved playing board games with friends or any social gathering really. I'm an introverted person and didn't always find it easy to talk and connect with someone new. I've gotten a lot better at this as I've aged, but in big groups I still tend to feel socially overwhelmed and I tend to shut down as a result.

In come board games. They have been such a massive help on certain occasions where I was sure I was going to feel shut out or like nobody would find me particularly interesting due to feeling overwhelmed. You put a board game in front of a group of people and suddenly everyone's focus is headed in the same direction.

It's an instant conversational topic that everyone can participate in, there is a playful and casual mood in the air, and the often turn based games allow everyone an opportunity to speak up. I've found it a lot more manageable to get to know someone through conversations when you're both doing a shared activity instead of awkwardly sitting at some table.

I also am a bit competitive by nature when it comes to these things, and when you have a group with the right people it can be so funny to talk mad crap to each other without anyone's feelings being hurt.

I'll be curious if users from different countries will bring forth some interesting games I have personally never heard of.

I do have a question. I’m not gonna make threads about it, maybe, idk, or anything but just wondering… what are your thoughts on tabletop games? Is that allowed in the forum or just strictly board games?

edit: disregard I accidentally overlooked poker and blackjack. My bad. Also, always been told board games can be table top but few table top can’t be board games (poker and all)

Oh man! I love board games! I grew up on board games.

My family (my siblings and I at least) would play Monopoly around Christmas every year until we got too old.

Now I'm a bit more of a snob with board games. There are so many different kinds now and so many are rip-offs of a better version.

Still, if I do a get together with people my age we tend to play board or card games over just about anything else.
