My Gaming Thoughts Right Now:

This is a post with some random bullet points where I speak my mind on stuff I've been thinking about, might be relevant to now, might be some random thoughts I've had about stuff, read on to find out!!!

  • Dude wheres my title screen? Like for realz man! What has happened to the cool title screens of yesteryear? Like remember all the cool title screens on the N64 thru the PS3(ish) times? Everyone always remembers Super Mario 64 with the Mario face that lets you recreate that one scene from Ichi The Killer. Or Ocarina of Time with Link riding on his Epona (riding, his Epony) which is a super calming opening that is probably one of my favorites title screens of the N64. But does anyone talk about that really cool one time only title screen of InFamous where Empire City is fine and everyone is just walking around, with bilboards with what feels like a million advertisements to change through. Then once you click start the madness starts as well! Or to jump way ahead Scorn has a special title screen as well, where Scorn guy is attached to the ground and are asleep and once you start you wake up and break away and start your journey! There's also ones that change once you beat the game like a lot of games in the Persona series, or the Kingdom Hearts series. Don't get me started on the differences in title screens versions when it comes to stuff like Kingdom Hearts 1 and 1.5, or Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden. As time went on we went from some super cool stuff like Super Mario Sunshine that has super interative menus and stuff, to stuff like Uncharted 3 which is literally just a barren desert! But ironically its my favorite of the 3 games, yes I said 3, I havent played Uncharted 4 yet. So really Uncharted 3 falls under the average, but in a positive average way like, even though its literally just a gun barrel sticking out of the sand, it makes me wonder. I might already know the story, but watching the sand blow away and wonder what possible story I would make up if I just stumbled on that scene in real life with no context. Probably no story as I'd be dying for water! But it gets my mind going the same way that Ico or Shadow of the Colossus does with its scrolling landscape background, similar to Ocarina but more thought involving I feel in some games. The scrolling landscape is actually a really common one I feel anymore, but don't right it is nice. And if its not that then its the little stuff moving, like the Uncharted sand, the flower pedals is expedition 33, or the cute baby Metroid in the Super Metroid title screen. There was also the ones with just cool music like any of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games, anything Sonic really. And did you know that The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian had Godsmack's Stand Alone playing on repeat in the background! And if you wait long enough it'll replay with double Stand Alone playing! I feel like I could talk about a lot of different stuff here that ill get into on a different date like the movable Mario in Sunshine's menu screen, or the wonders of Black Ops 2 menu screens. But that is a section for a different day! Just appreciate the next title screen that you really enjoy and gets you hype to play whatever it is! You never know when you'll find another one!

  • Dude wheres my loading screen? Some might know where I'm going with this one, but its also going down a different path. Remember having all that fun in all those Assassin Creed game loading screens? Sometimes probably more fun then you'd have in some of them normally! I actually falsely remembered being able to do more in them then you actually can, if anything you lose some cool loading screen ability in later games it seems! Then a good old Symphony of the Night with its WHOOOOOAH! loading screen that you can move around in cool ways with the D-Pad that I didn't know about for the first few playthroughs! I just wondered why sometimes it spun faster then other times, had no idea it was cuz I was pushing right or whatever on the D-Pad! A lot of Dragon Ball Z games USED to play by this logic, be it Goku or Gohan or some other Go character trying to eat Ramen really fast or one with Vegeta doing push ups where you gotta spam certain buttons to make him go faster. I think one was a weight lifting one, one to do with pulling up swords, the list seems endless! How about all the fighters that lets you fight each other in the loading screens before you fight each other! Or Bayanetta with its training you can do in the loading screens. Apparently you can even attack the loading screens in DMC 3, I never knew that! I hope that deep web article wasn't lying to me! I also wanna offhandly mention the old Mortal Kombat games that had unique loading screens where you and the other player can put codes in and have special effects turn on during the next fight. I never knew this when I actually had people to play with! The last big part I wanna bring up is literally: 'Where is my loading screen?' As nowadays games either have 10 minutes loading screens that are really bland generic Now Loading with a bar type thing. Maybe a spinning icon in the corner (Uncharted anyone? ((OK the 3D models usually in those types of loading screens is pretty cool))......) Or they have no loading screens at all outside of the first bland Now Loading with the bar one when stuff is getting loaded up in the world and saved into the RAM and other fancy sounding stuff! So really that's what happened to a lot of cool loading screens, they just aren't needed anymore. And if they are there, they usually aren't here long enough to matter. If anything it makes the ones with cooler loading screens kinda mute at this point. Like its impossible to have fun with SOTN's one anymore on a new console as the loading screens either literally don't exist sometimes and when they do they last half a second. While I can look back fondly as running around as Ezio in a more digital world then usual. Or playing literally any Namco game like Ridge Racer to play some random other Namco game, and think about how they are also part of the reason why the fun is ruined! But I'll still have more memories of just sitting there stressed that I'm looking at ANOTHER spinning Fallout loading screen. And also hoping that it doesn't randomly stop spinning as well! Or maybe I don't have a lot of those memories as boring loading screens all morph together! I wanted to talk about stuff like Metroid Prime and Batman Arkham Origins/Knight and other games with there clever way to hide their loading screens. But that is a different tangent I can go on some other day!

So comment below what your opinion was on whatever I was going about the fall of the title screens! Or my thoughts of how loading screens have changed over time. I'd love to hear whatever you'd have to say!

You know I never really thought about the streamer side of stuff like that as I don't watch any streamers myself, but its the truth if I ever heard it! As time goes on, more stuff like that matters even if it seems like a temporary thing in my opinion. Like in 20 years I don't really think streamers are going to be a thing, at least not how they are now. I mean just look at how stuff like VR and AI have changed how streamers do their thing. Just imagine how stuff like even the loading screen will be different because of something like that! I also kinda didn't think about how much space making a cool loading screen could take up in the storage of a game. I mean if the next Call of Duty had cool loading screens it would be another full terabyte bigger! And same with the unploish-ness of a newly released game, if it cant even run right normally then the loading screens wont be much fun either, if even work. Really it just kinda shows how our mindset have shifted overtime as well, as we just care about chasing the next trend instead of making the next cool new loading screen huh. And as for your lack of appreciation of the title screen, how dare you! Naw just kidding, both the loading screen and title screen sections make me realize that I care about the oddest of things sometimes! One of the biggest reasons I like them so much is that I personally do spend a lot of time on them. If I had a way of keeping track of the amount of time I spend on title screens, and very specifically the screen with the title on it, not the menus or anything. It would probably be in the years! As time gets in my way and I at least have the game loaded up that far for my next chance to actually play, that I probably thought was going to be 5 minutes ago! So I have the time to appreciate them as they are going on in the background of my life. If this was a movie site or whatever I'd have a section on this thread about DVD menus instead. Ill still probably make a section one day about video game ones instead though! Your mention of microtransactions makes me want to make a section on a gaming Thoughts thread one day, but that's like beating a dead horse isn't it? But now when I look at either of the two aforementioned screens I'll have some new thoughts to think about!

The loading screens are gone because of a variety of reasons. The first one relates to why they appeared originally: because there was enough space on the media storage. Nowadays, some games are way too big so as to include anything not really necessary for gameplay, we've exceeded the storage capacity and multiple-disc games weren't seen as a way around since the beginning. With digital only games, the space is limited by the console's own storage, which is itself limited because of games getting bigger with updates and whatnot as well as other apps or content it may have. So basically, there's no space for them anymore, not at least under normal circumstances.

The second one is the public. In the era of social media, bland loading screens allow streamers a breather to look at the chat, take a sip of their drink, reacommodate themselves on the chair or other minutiae, even if loading screens of old came back they'd still serve the same function (and a streamer would only enjoy them a few times before treating them like generic loading screens). Many games are designed entirely to fit the routine of streamers and forget about gamers playing to no public, and not just because of loading screens.

The third one is a bit darker and has to do with the industry. We've shifted into an industry with microtransactions, unfinished games at launch and so on, to the point that playing for fun seems like a thing of the past now instead of the main purpose of a game. Thus, since the focus of the game has shifted entirely and no longer care for small things like loading screens, no point in dedicating time to include such things in their next failed release.

I'd like to include some words for title screens, but I don't pay much attention to them since their only purpose is to allow us to enter the game and select a mode. True, some deserve mention and are remarkable, but I don't care for a screen I'll only stare at for a few seconds before entering any of the game's menus. I do admit they create a positive or negative first impression, however we're always told we must not judge a book by its cover and the cover no longer means (just) the game case.
