Jack Bros. 10-18-13 09:43 PM |
Frog Coin Presents: A Jack Bros. Review An overhead, action maze game. Your basic goal is to quickly collect the keys on every floor until the ledge to descend further unlocks, keep going until you reach and defeat the guardian of the stage, then proceed to the next stage and repeat. ____ Story: 7/10 - On the day of October 31st, the gate way between the Fairy and Human world opens, allowing all the ghouls and ghosties to cross over and have fun with the children for the day. But if a creature from the Fairy world remains in the Human world after midnight, they will lose their powers and disappear, forever! You are Jack, a little monster that's not too particularly good at keeping track of time, so you can guess what happens next. Yep, it's an hour till midnight. Luckily for you, a native human world Pixie has come to your aid! So basically, make it to the Fairy world gate before time's up. Not a bad plot, I never really expect much from old school games in terms of story, so the fact that it has one is simply a plus. ____ Depth: 7/10 - You have three characters to choose from, Jack Frost, Jack Lantern, and Jack Skelton (no second 'e'). They each have their own perk, Jack Frost's main attack is a limitless supply of snowballs... in October... yeah. His special, or "plasma" attack is freezing the enemies on screen, which isn't particularly helpful most of the time. Lantern shoots stronger projectiles, but has the limit of only four at a time, so don't shoot off carelessly in long corridors. Lantern's plasma attack is destroying all damageable on-screen foes. Finally, there's Skelton with his small but powerful knife, beware, close and personable isn't exactly something most opponents like, so you'll have to be quick. Skelton's special is the same as Lantern's, only difference being flying swords instead of orbs. This game has 5 stages (6 if you include the 3 floor tutorial). Each stage has an increasing amount of floors to survive, mult... Read the rest of this Review |
Space Pinball (Prototype) 10-10-13 07:40 PM |
The (Not So) Great Space Pinball Adventure! Your average run-of-the-mill pinball game, but in space. This game was a prototype for the actual game, Galactic Pinball, so I may end up being a bit lax on the review due to this. So, moving right along. - - Graphics: 6/10 - The graphics and animations are actually pretty good, every stages board is different in some way, and it keeps things from getting stale to quickly. Of course the "ball" could have used the same treatment, it doesn't roll or anything, giving it more of the appearance of a puck than ball. - - Sound: 6/10 - Not much different from your average bleeps and bloops of older games with the occasional firing or alarm sound bits. The best clip would probably be the announcers voice for the title screen, it's loud and clear, probably on level with computers at the time. Their are 5 music tracks for this game. The first being the title screen, which is well fitting even for as short as it is. The second song comes from the selection screen, which is alright, but nothing really special and might get on your nerves over long periods. Considering you'll also be hearing it a lot more than you'd hope, they could have picked something better. The third track playing for boards 1 and 4, the 'Whimsical' tune as I call it, begins with a starry sound, then extends to a feeling of fun and amusement. It's pretty good. The fourth track which plays for boards 2 and 5, personally titled the 'Adventure' tune, offers a feel of mystery, exploration, and discovery, giving you a real feel for adventure. Shame it ended up in a pinball game. And the fifth track that plays on the 3rd board, which could also be called 'The March', starts off with (obviously) a march, which then slowly builds up to classic arcade-like tune before reverting to the monotonous march. - - Depth: 3/10 - This game offers 5 boards in total, each with a unique goal and mechanic. Stage 1 which is th... Read the rest of this Review |
