Baseball use to be one of my favorite sports back when I was a younger, but not so much now. Back when I was a kid, I was a huge Seattle Mariners fan. There was players like Edgar Martinez, Ken Griffey Jr, Jay Buhner, and more that were stars of the team. Of course after the year they won 116 games I lost interest in the team, and in baseball in general, but that doesn't mean I hate baseball video games. So I figure I would review World Series Baseball on the Sega Genesis. Now I use to play this game a ton back when I was a kid, I remember renting this all the time from a local video store, and then buying it later on after the place shut down. Me and a good friend of mine use to spent hours playing this game, either playing a game against each other, or doing Home Run Derby, which is a badass mode.
World Series Baseball is developed by Blue Sky Software and published by Sega, it was released in 1994 on the Sega Genesis. There are 28 teams, and 6 divisions with 700 players that were around during the time. Which is around a great time of baseball, you had classic players, then again, the mid 90's to early 2000's you had players in their prime. Big names too, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, Derek Jeter, and more. There is a Exhibition, Season, and even mutliplayer modes in this game, along with a Tournament mode. Season Mode allows you play a full 162 game season, which is quite fun, but very time consuming. Although there was one time I actually did do a full season, and went to the World Series, but I lost to the Chicago Cubs in Game 7. I got my ass handed to me, of course this was 14 years ago. I should try and do a 162 game season.
The graphics for it's time were damn good, the game has great detail for a game on a 16 bit console. The game is colorful, you can tell the players on the screen in the top down view are actual players and not blips. The stadiums are well designed and look great. The game doesn't glitch or slowdown, nothing I can really complain about. The music and sound effects are not bad, the music is nothing special, but it does fit the game, the sound effects are nice, and the voice overs from the robotic sounding announcer and the umpire are nice, and quite funny really. The controls are good and responsive, hitting and pitching is very easy, moving around on field is easy, they respond very well, once again, nothing I can complain about.
World Series Baseball is a damn good baseball game on the Sega Genesis, probably one of my favorites on the console. Then again, this was a huge part of my childhood and I have so many awesome memories. The graphics are great, the music and sound effects are good, along with the voice overs, the controls are great, if you love sports, and you love baseball, this is a game you should check out. You can find the game for cheap out there either online or at a local game stores. I mean it's a sports game, I doubt you are going to have to pay an arm or a leg for it. If so, you are being ripped off.
