Winter Games review G@mehe@d
This game is a pile of garbage that should be burned in the fire and then the ashes should be put into a rotten tray and it should displayed as the worst Olympic sports game ever created in history! That's how much I hate this game, it should have been better! Epyx was too lazy to make this game apparently!
GAMEPLAY F-: This is the first time I actually given this rating to a game besides that crappy game on the Atari 2600 called Star Fox. Which is a terrible game by the way. If your asking why I given this section such a low rating, then here's the answer. The controls are so awful that the game is not very playable. The 4 events in the game each have their own problems with controls. The "hot dog aerials", wait a minute hot dog aerials. Why was it called hot dog aerials and not ski jumping. Anyway the controls for that one are impossible to use! I never have the guy actually land unless I do nothing. The ice skating event has fairly good controls, they are responsive but they are a torture to use. I was never a fan of button taping. Especially if you got to push 2 buttons rapidly. No matter how good I got on doing this I never even gotten close to winning. The figure skating is the worst of them all. I can't even get the skater to do a jump. After a while I did she fell, in fact she falls all the time. Just the touch of a button that you should be able to use to jump could make her fall. Now that's annoying. The best of them all is the bobsled. The controls for that one are okay, but the crappy view really sucks. It looks pretty bad, and you will be kind of angry by this. At least it's playable though.
GRAPHICS C: The box says the game has "rich graphics" that a little bit of a stretch but the graphics are fairly good. There is no flicker or break up. There's not even any slow down that I have seen. The worst graphics you will see in the game is during the bobsled event. The view is so crappy. You will see the map on the large part of the screen and the bobsled point of view on the small part. I don't know what Epyx was thinking.
SOUND C-: Like the graphics the sound is not too spectacular but it's okay. Nothing bad or torturous, the events don't have much music though and this makes them somewhat unexciting.
ADDICTIVENESS F: I don't know who would enjoy this game! It's mediocre in the fun department and there's not even a good high score system in the game. So it's a waste of money.
DEPTH F: There is only 4 events. That's right 4. The typical NES cartridge could store more then that. The original Track and Field had 8 events.
DIFFICULTY HARD: The terrible controls make this game very difficult to play.
OVERALL RATING F.

The worst controls in video game history. totaldramaman2
Oh crap, THIS game. Winter Games on the NES. Winter games was on a bunch fo consoles, including the Atari 2600, Atari 7800, and Apple II. While the Atari 2600 version was complate, they actually SPLIT UP the games between the 7800 and the NES. Let that begin the horribleness that is Winter Games.
--- The lighting of the torch of crap. ---So, the game starts out with some guy who probably works at a 70's night club lighting the torcch. You can't skip this cutscene, which iss really annoying. Maybe it would be fine if I only HAD to see it the first time, but why EVERY time I start the game? I guess they did a good job spriting it, since the guy walks up the stairs properly. I feel like whoever made this wanted me to stand and act like... never mind. Then, the name entry screen is horrible. You can't go up and down, you have to go all the way to the left or right to go to the next row of letters. As if that wasn't bad enough, they made the name limit FOUR letters. Now, usually they only have 6-7 spaces, BUT NOT FOUR! This game seems to like the number 4. The Atari 2600 version has seven events, and this has four. The first game is Hot Dog Aerials. Have no idea what that means? i don't. Well, it looks like a ski jump game. All you really have to do is hold down A. That's why I did, and he didn't flop around. There's really no goal. If you do it a certain amount of times, (NOT FOUR) the game ends. However, I didn't do it right. You're supposed to do flips, THEN land straight. I haven't gotten him to do that, and I don't plan to. So... what does it have to do with hot dogs? I really don't know.
--- How bad can the controls get? ---Next is Speed Skating. At least they didn't call it some crazy name. You know what is crazy? THE CONTROLS. Instead of holding A like you would expect, you rock the d-pad left and right. Really? Well, there's something that makes a bit of sense: left controls the left leg and right controls the right leg. That's actually kind of acceptable. I sense that they actually tried to make sense with this. However, un-skippable opening cutscenes and impossible names selection screens make sense? The next game is... Figure Skating. This is the worst out of this collection. Now, as you probably know, AVGN thought that too. He mashed the buttons and all he could do was make her do a spin-jump. Well, since I have way too much time on my hands, I got her to turn around, spin her foot in the air, and glitch the game where I made it run 7 seconds after the timer had ended. I did this all in the same round... and they still gave me a 0.0. "0.0" was my face when I saw that. Now I know how all of those games I review feel. I usually don't give more than a 0.8. Is this a lesson for me? Should it be telling me I should be nicer to these games? Maybe.
--- Look at how seperated the screen is. ---The final game is The Bobsled. We went from a flying hot dog which was really a ski jump to such a simple name. So, the main focus of the screen seems like the map. Then there's a small part with the sleighers, which actually is the main screen. Then there's the speed, and the time. It's like Top Gun, all that unneeded crap at the bottom. I thought I had to lean with the hill, but I'm supposed to lean against the hill. The clouds and sky and clouds look really un-natural. The left side of the snow really looks like cement. This event basically sums up the whole game. Confusing graphics, horrible sound, unbearble controls, and over-done difficulty. Actually, now that I think about it, this event has good controls, and because of that, it's not that hard. This game has made it's point clear. It's one of the worst games on the NES, mainly because of the controls. But... maybe bad controls are good. Lots of my reviewed games are bad because of control. Shaq Fu, Kid Kool, Menace Beach, Dragon's Lair and... Superman 64. That was my first crappy game review. Bad controls are probably more good than bad for me. I've had enough of this game. I guess I'll see you in my next review.
