Venture's Adventure   Ultrajeff
Background: Venture is a maze, adventure game released in 1981 by Exidy. It stars Winky, a archer blob who enters labyrinths to collect treasure. There isn't much to it,  seeing when it was made. I'll just explain the game's merits, in an attempt to see if the game will catch your interest.

Gameplay: Pressing the action button shoots a yellow arrow, while moving the joystick adjusts Winky position. Pressing lightly allows Winky to change his orientation without moving, while pressing harshly moves him in one of eight directions. The player controls Winky, a red blob with a bow and arrow. Winky can shoot and kill enemies. The enemies include Room monsters and Hallmonsters. Room monsters can jump and dodge Winky's arrows. Some are simply indifferent, while others are merciless. The only two ways to kill them are either pining them to the wall or shooting them diagonally. Even when clearly dead, they can be threatening. If shot too soon after dying, they can regenerate easily. Touching their corpse will kill you. Hallmonsters can pop in and out of rooms, especially if you take too long. They can pass through the walls, and are completely invincible. Touching them means death.  There are separate views, one of all the separate dungeons when traversing the world, and one that depicts the inside of one. Enemies exist everywhere, and can be encountered inside or outside of a dungeon. The two types of enemies are outer and inner creatures. Outer creatures are invisible, tricky to deal with, and are general annoyances. Avoiding them helps to enter a room safely. Inner creatures are inside a dungeon, and guard the treasure. Each room has about one treasure, and collecting it closes the room. You can enter freely before then. Collecting the treasure either changes the room or its monsters. When in a room, Winky must take the treasure and escape quickly. To aid this dilemma, Winky can kill guarding enemies in a room to secure the treasure. When four rooms of a dungeon are cleared, Winky can advance accordingly.   8/10
Graphics: The graphics are amazing (for 1981). Sprites pop and fizzle elegantly, while dungeons are detailed and animated. Every room has a special animation upon entering, and the enemies bounce, bop, shake, and slither to you in a fluid motion. The graphics shine with small details and just look good.  8/10
Sound: Like the sharp visuals, the sound illuminates the whole experience. The game has some background music, rare for its time, while also having satisfying sound effects for slaying monsters and collecting secret treasures. The music greatly enhances the atmosphere, and accompanies your adventuring. The tunes, while a bit repetitive, immerses you and satisfies your cravings.  9/10
Depth: This game is expansive, even today, thanks to its multiple rooms and traps. You can spend hours looking and still be hooked indefinitely.  While not all treasures and rooms may be satisfactory, it is still a thrill to find, navigate, and explore them. 8/10
Story: It doesn't have much of one. It involves Winky entering a abandoned castle to capture its hidden treasure. 2/10
Addictiveness: The game really isn't that addictive, as It's actually quite simplistic. If you love dungeon crawling, it will leave you coming back for more and fulfilling your desires.   6/10
Difficulty: The game is quite difficult, actually. The traps are simple yet deceptive, and can kill you if not on guard. Enemies are strategically placed and prepared. Always approach with caution.    8/10
Overall: Venture is a very interesting game, as playing it will challenge your mind and skill. It's expansive enough to require strategy, and will usually have you coming to creative conclusions on how to solve problems. Give it a try, to test your prowess. It will surprise you. 7.8/10
