Super C - Super Blasting Aliens to Death!   geeogree
Super Contra, or Super C, is the sequel to one of the best and most difficult games for the NES ever made. Most people could not beat the original game and Super C is no different. Without the “Konami Code” to get extra lives the game was very nearly impossible. However, the difficulty of the game is part of what makes it great. It may not be considered as good as the original Contra game but it is still one of the best side-scrolling games for the NES and here is why.
Graphics 8/10 – while the graphics for Super C are in no way revolutionary they are solid for the NES and the era in which the game was made. I love the destroyed earth look of the early levels and the very alien looks of the later levels. I also like the progression of monster design through the game as well. Very fun to see what there was to look at. One complaints I have is that in some areas there is NOTHING in the background. Sort of boring to have lots of other stuff going on but then see a lot of the screen as just being black. Although, with everything else going on it may have been overwhelming to have vibrant backgrounds as well. Tough to say what would have been better.
An improvement Super C made over Contra was the secondary view to the side-scrolling. In Contra the secondary view was this weird “3D” view that you had to fight through. It was really well done considering the console that it was built for but thinking about it now it was really awkward to play through. I much prefer the top down view the Super C (and later Contra 3) used instead. I also liked that the gameplay switched back and forth between the 2 views depending on the level you were on. Kept the gameplay fresh and the look of the game didn’t become bland with never ending side-scrolling to look at.
Sound 10/10 – I absolutely LOVE the music for this game. I listened through it again before writing this review and it brought back so many memories of this game. The music is perfectly crafted to the style of game. It is high-paced and almost frenetic which matches the gameplay feel throughout nearly the entire game. It basically never lets up from beginning to end as you fight through the hordes of soldiers and aliens that come at you. Lots of fun.
The other good part are the weapon sounds. I love the way each gun sounds when you fire it. They all got unique sounds (like the last game) and I didn’t find the repetitive use of the guns to be annoying. I also liked the explosions from enemies and other background sounds that were included in the levels. Made for an overall great sound experience.
Addictiveness 10/10 – this game is one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played. For some reason getting 4 or 5 levels in and dying didn’t discourage me from playing but made me want to play even more! I don’t know if I can put into words exactly why this game is so fun but it kept me coming back for more. Another added benefit was this was a 2 player game, unlike many side-scrollers of the same era, which added another element to the game and kept it interesting. Or ruined friendships because one of you jumped too much before the other guy had caught up.
Story 5/10 – the story is nothing amazing or interesting. The same aliens from Contra are back and have taken over a military base and possessed all the soldiers there. It is the job of the 1 (or 2) hero(es) to go and save the day. They are dropped in by helicopter (which looks just like a helicopter of today but the story is 500 years or so in the future) and are expected to retake the base by themselves and rid the world of the alien infestation. They did it once before so why not expect they can do it again right? If there was more to the story I would have rated it higher but as it stands it’s a pretty basic shoot-em-up story.
Depth 5/10 – this is another place where the game lacks. The game is very linear and there are almost no options to the game except for the weapons you can collect. Those weapons are fun but beyond that there is nothing extra. I don’t view this as an overly negative thing because not all games need to have the depth of a Final Fantasy type rpg when the entire point of the game is to blow up the aliens. Too much depth in a game like this and it would have ruined the basic element that made the game fun: lots of bad guys running at you and trying to kill you and you trying to kill them as quickly as humanly possible without getting hit by the million bullets or bombs coming your way.
Difficulty 10/10 – like I said in the intro this is by far one of the most difficult games made for the NES. I think it is slightly easier than Contra was but not by much. It is still a 1 hit and you are dead game and you only have a limited number of lives when you start out. I’ve lost on the first level so many times that I’ve lost count. Just getting through that is tough enough and there are 5 levels that are increasingly difficult. The boss fights are also quite difficult if you don’t get your timing just right. This game will frustrate even the most experienced players at first until the levels become more familiar.
Overall 9/10 – Super C is an absolutely great game to play. It is a fast paced game that never lets up from beginning to end. The graphics are good and the music is great to listen to. The difficulty means that even if you do manage to beat the game once you won’t have much easier of a time doing it again. By far one of the most fun titles to play on the NES.

All I have is my gun and my humanity A Super Contra Review   Celestial Knight
Put aside your morals, pick up your gun, and blast away the alien threat. For you solider you are the Earths one and hope, you a lone wolf, you the under dog, must beat the odds, you must rise to the challenge and you must defeat the alien oppressors again from ending all humanity and life as we know it.This is reality as you know it, this is Super Contra.Super Contra is incredibly different from the original and in many attributes better than its predecessor which you should expect from a game that came out during what I like to call the second coming of the 8 bit era Nintendo NES games. I would categorize Super Contra as a Nintendo NES classic and must have. In addition you don't have to play the original Contra to get into it's squeal Super Contra.
Overall I rated and deeply felt Super Contra deserved it's rating of a perfect 10/10 for a number of reasons.Just to name a few of the top of my head, the movement and overall mechanics of the game. The games player movement is simply better and more free flowing than the original and really feels fast and loose compared to the originals slow and stiff. In addition you can now shoot in any/all directions and move around in any direction during boss fights and in the basic stages. In addition what earned Super Contra this overall rating is the environments that are seen throughout the game, they are really interactive and visually stunning and look/feel alive (so to speak) very good animations and backgrounds that really sell the story and set the dark theme/mood of the game.
For the graphics I felt Super Contra deserved a 10/10. The programmers really went above and beyond what was expected and created an environment the really came alive and set the mood for the game. The backgrounds are would I would describe as gif images and are constantly moving and making the player feel as though the world of Super Contra is really going on around them, they just visually pull you into the game. The backgrounds are hand drawn clearly and honestly look and feel vibrant they really make the game stand out and look just stunning. As for the sprites seen in the game, you can clearly make out the characters and enemies and each enemy is unique with regards to how they look. With the sprites you can see all their different uniforms and cloths and body structures clearly with ease and one can tell the programmers really took the initiative to focus more on physical details in this game.
As for sound I felt Super Contra earned a 10/10.The soundtrack for the game matches the flow of the game which is fast pace with that said the music goes along perfect with Super Contra's fast pace action. The soundtrack featured on all eight stages(areas) sounds new and really helps create an illusion effect that makes the player get lost in the gameplay and the world of Super Contra. Notably though When encountering a boss stage I really felt the music in the game hit it's peak and made me both pumped and scared when entering a boss stage. Basically the music invokes an emotional response which only adds to the great gaming experience of Super Contra.
For addictiveness I rated Super Contra a 10/10. Now I know as a reader you feel I'm pushing it with all these 10 out of 10 ratings but bear with me, Super Contra deserved this rating because the game makes the player interested and eager to play and beat the game, I literally beat the game right before I wrote this review, beat the entire game in about 4 hours without leaving or taking a break. What makes Super Contra so addicting is the games combination of a fast paced action adventure side scroller shooter and the visuals, animations in the game plus the amazing motivating, hype'd soundtrack that doesn't make you wanna stop playing. In addition what also added to the addictivness of Super Contra is its difficult and fast pace. You don't want to stop playing because the game is hard and you feel as though you have to beat it now or never.
The story of Super Contra I felt deserved a 8/10. While I do give Super Contra points for staying true to it's source material, the story scored rather low compared to other segments. This is because the story hasn't changed at all from it's original and first installment Contra. The Story of Super Contra goes like, you are a solider fighting a one man waged war against an alien attack and conquest of the Earth and only you can stop the alien menace from taking over and destroying humanity.
As for the depth of Super Contra, I felt the game deserved a solid 7 out of 10.I felt Super Contra deserved this rating because the game didn't take very long to beat and could have used more stages in it.While I am not a fan of dragging out stories, games etc longer than they need to be, I felt Super Contra was an exception. I feel as though the creators could have put in some bonus stages or unlockable secret stages. The game however does feel rather big to only have 8 stages and there where multiple points in the game where I lost track of what stage I was on due to the length of each stage and how many mini or sub bosses I had to get thru in order to get to the stage boss to advance.
Now for the difficulty of Super Contra, it stayed true to the original with regards to it's difficulty and I felt Super Contra deserved a difficulty rating of 9 out of 10. I felt Super Contra earned this rating because the enemies have gotten smarter, faster and more elusive than what was seen in the first Contra. Now with that said the enemies in Super Contra will shoot back at you and almost mirror move the way you move. The game's enemies spawn quickly and at times can easily overwhelm you. Enemies will also use a verity of different weapons to attack you and at times you will find yourself pinned down under a hale of bullets unable to simply shoot your way out.Personally I feel as though the spawning rate of enemies was incredibly to high in Super Contra, I found myself constantly having to blast enemies behind me while trying to focus on moving forward. While the game has an insane difficulty, the difficulty is also what makes the game fun and gives the gamer that feeling of accomplishment once the game is beaten.
Final thoughts on Super Contra. The game is diffidently worth a play. Rather if you played the original or not you can jump right in and get sucked into the story of Super Contra. While the game is difficult it only adds to the experience of Super Contra and truly makes the game more exciting and enjoyable. With the games soundtracks and animations/visuals the player will be drawn into the game immediately and feel as though they themselves are right there with the main character and apart of the story.Super Contra is exciting and dangerously addictive and is the perfect mix of action adventure/side scroller and I would recommend it to anyone that is a fan of the action/adventure genre. What are you waiting for? come play and see for yourself you won't be disappointed!

Super Contra = SUPER COOL!   vizz-whizz
SUPER CONTRA RAP
Super Contra is a challenging game,
U shooting all your enemies because they're so lame,
Lots of power-ups now you're in the game,
Killing the enemies boggling their brains,
The hero is Bill.R! Bill.R! Bill.R,
His sidekick is Lance Bean! Lance Bean! They are,
THE CONTRA CREW!
Review :D
First of all, the 10 life code: In The Vizzed Emulator, the code is Right, Left, Down, Up, D, S, Enter. But in the original game, the code would be: Right, Left, Down, Up, A, B, Start!
This games is challenging so u may need the code, also I'd recommend save states after each stage (or AREA)
And it's obvious that save and load states can be used anytime in the vizzed emulator (u need the plug-in to use this emulator)
The series is still going along with Bill.R! The latest games are 1. Contra Hard Corps Uprising for PS3 + X-Box 360
                                                                                                                   2. Contra Rebirth (don't quite know what it's for)
                                                                                                                   3. Contra 4 for DS

I definitely liked Contra better than this one...
ARedLetterDay 04-30-14 - 05:58 AM
I'd say Hard Corps even on normal difficulty is probably the hardest Contra -- if only because, for once, the American version of the game is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than the Japanese. In the original, you got three hitpoints which made the game fairly easy.
UFC 04-30-14 - 03:04 AM
beat th egame, really fun not too hard. Contra 3 hard mode blows all of these games out of the water in difficulty and hard corps looks hard based on bosses
