Overview: Pengo is an arcade game released by Sega in 1982, an early arcade effort. The game was made as an attempt to capitalize on the sucess of cute arcade games like Pac-Man. The game sees you playing as a penguin named Pengo, who's goal is to defeat the sno-bees and complete the given level.
Controls: You use the joystick to move left, right, up, or down. Pengo, by your command, can skate along the icy pathways with a flick of the joystick. You use the action button given to destroy ice blocks. In short, the controls are simple and effiecient. 10/10
Gameplay: You dart around as little Pengo, taking advantage of the Ice blocks to kill the pesky sno-bees. Pressing the action button near an ice block will cause Pengo to move it over an open space.If there isn't one, the block get crushed. Diamond blocks also exist, and are harder to break but more effective killing tools because they don't break when being thrown down a corridor. The gameplay is elaborate and understandable. 8/10
Graphics; For 1982 and beyond, the graphics are servicable and crisp. The game is actually quite colorful. Pengo gracefully skates along, while the sno-bees caress the maze with their movement cycles. The mazes are unique and built quite soundly. 8/10
Sound: The music can get a little bit repetitive, but it's good for it's time and all. The sound effects are very lush and enticing. 8/10
Addictiveness: The game isn't all too fun. Don't get me wrong: It's a wholesome experience, but its mostly another maze game, with the same strategies in use for about every level in somewhat identical mazes. If you like maze games with strategy and skill required, this is for you. 6/10
Story: This game doesn't have much story. Pengo just has to defeat all the sno-bees to help out his penguin brethren. 2/10
Depth: You will mostly enter similar mazes, without too much variety. You don't have too much variety at hand, but enough to make this game feasible. 6/10
Difficulty: This particular game's difficulty is moderate. It might seem a tad hard at first, but once you adjust to the given controls, it's a piece of cake. 6/10
Conclusion: Pengo is a quirky maze game. While it's not too terribly original, it has upbeat music, a cute art style, and level design that will entice you. It's like a fun time-waster. 8.2/10
