Namco Gallery Vol. 1 - A Good GB Import   9-Volt
Hi, it's 9-Volt. Just reviewing another cool game I like that isn't reviewed - Namco Gallery, Volume 1. If you've noticed, I have a passion for anything Namco Bandai (Namco makes cool games, Bandai makes Gunpla, Sunrise [a subsidiary of Bandai] animated my favorite anime, Sgt. Frog). Also, this game needs more plays, in my opinion.
I'll sum up the game for those unfamiliar: It's one volume in a collection of 12 old games by the company Namco. They're most famous for
Pac-Man, which, for whatever reason, isn't included. This volume, #1, includes Battle City, Galaga, Mappy, and Namco Classic. (To those not in the know: Namco Classic is a golfing game. The title does absolutely nothing to indicate that.) All 4 of those games are available on Vizzed, although Mappy won't play because of some missing .bin files.
Graphics: 10
There are 3 ways I've played this game on Vizzed: GB emulation, Super Game Boy emulation, and SGB emulation (with border). (The Super Game Boy, if you don't know, was a lock-on cartridge for the SNES and Super Famicom that would let people play Game Boy games on their SNES/SFC. In games that supported it, it added a border around the game screen and added colorization to the graphics. Basically, kinda like the Game Boy Player.) I'll be judging each by what they add.
GB: Great graphics. Everything is scaled down perfectly for the Game Boy from the arcade (or Family Computer in the case of Namco Classic) original. They could have made it 1:1, but then that would have required excessive scrolling. That doesn't mean there's no scrolling already though - Every game requires scrolling, although in the game's defense,  Mappy, Namco Classic, and maybe even Battle City already scrolled anyway.
SGB: The added color is well-distributed and very few objects are discolored. One thing I don't like, though, is how the Mappy logo is purple-bordered, like in the Famicom version.
SGB + Border: Each part of the game has a different border, although the title screen, game select, and help and ranking sections share one. Each game border is amazingly colorful and imaginative, fitting to the game, otherwise aesthetically pleasing, and including a sky.
Conclusion: Graphics are good, great, awesome, outstanding, amazing! Everything is recognizable and colorful (on the SGB emulation, anyway) and game graphics are true to the originals.
Sound: 10
I know making more than one category "10" looks noobish or exaggerated but trust me, I'm a professional (by Vizzed's standards, anyway), say-it-as-it-is reviewer. (I guess since my reviews are always positive, it might look like I'm being too nice to them, but really it's because I don't review games I don't like.) Anyway, yeah, this game has great sound. Every aspect of the game has a new song - but unlike the borders, this time there's no exceptions. Each one is enjoyable. The title screen one gives me chills every time. The sound effects are great too.
Conclusion: Sound rivals graphics in awesomeness.
Addictiveness: 7
Somehow I don't always think of this game when browsing Vizzed. Maybe Metro Cross distracts me. Additionally, I don't always go for replays in-game, either. I have no idea why; it's such a great game, and it's at the top of the games I "own" on Vizzed, and I love Namco so much, why don't I play this more often? Honestly, I just don't know....maybe my newest discoveries (A2600 Princess Rescue and Sonic, old Namco arcade games, other cool stuff) are more exciting? I do have a tendency to play this game more often than others, so it is there.
Conclusion: Somehow, this game isn't as addicting as it should be.
Story: N/A
There's no story here. Just a nice game collection.
Conclusion: No story.
Depth: 8
This game isn't completely flat, but it doesn't have too much variety either. The games inside the game are pretty deep, though - Battle City, Mappy, and Namco Classic have very varying levels, no two are the same. Mappy has many little perks in it, like the bonus stage, the rainbow floors and bells, and more. Battle City has a few different enemy tanks. Namco Classic, like most golf games, has a gazillion different types of golf clubs to choose from, although I'm not sure of the difference between most of them. Galaga has very varying Challenging Stage patterns that always surprise me (except the first one, because I've played it so many times).
Conclusion: The game itself falls a little short, but the games offered inside it are deep in themselves.
Difficulty: YMMV (6 for me)
This game is easy to learn, easy to play, and the controls are just about perfect. What makes this game a 6 in difficulty is how the games themselves are just naturally that difficulty. Galaga and Battle City are easy, Mappy's hard, and Namco Classic's a N/A. Although, (except in the case of Namco Classic,) that's just my opinion. As per the norm, Difficulty is technically a YMMV thing (YMMV is short for Your Mileage May Vary, meaning it may be different depending on who you are), it's just that in my case it's a 6.
Conclusion: Difficulty varies, in-game and depending on who you are.
Conclusion: 9.5
This game is pretty good, please try it. If you're a fan of Namco, this is for you. It's like a mini Namco Museum, if you will. Can't say much here that I haven't already, so, uh, bye. 9-Volt the Namco fan of Vizzed, out.
