Rise of the Tomb Raider Review by: Spacey Sul - 8/10

A fun game about stealing from dead people
Daang Spacey, back at it again with the catchy titles //shotforbringupdead meme

Rise of the Tomb Raider: A sequel to the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise, Rise of the Tomb Raider was released in 2015, and this one takes on another one of Lara Croft's daring adventures. In this one, to put it simply and without spoiling too much of the story, our heroine is trying to discover answers about what happened in the previous game, ending up on a search for a lost city and clashing with the organization Trinity once again. She finds information that shocks her, and experiences a deep betrayal.

As I usually do, I will start with what I scored the lowest until I reach the highest, ending it with what the actual score is and what my personal score is.

*Gasps* The Addictiveness Isn't High??: Truly a shocker if you have seen where this one typically falls in my previous reviews. I find this game very interesting and very in-depth, as you will find out later on in this review, but I simply don't think this is one I'll likely replay. To me, it feels more like a game you want to fully complete and then not touch again, unless you want to try a different difficulty. I did enjoy playing it though, finding it hard to put down, which is what raised the score in this category a little bit. I just don't think it's something you replay for the heck of it. In this category, I give it a Six [I'd give it more of a 5.6, but you know this system doesn't do decimals].

A Cool Story Idea, but Not What I Expected: When I got this game, I wasn't expecting what I got. The story, in my opinion, was pretty cool and interesting, but just plain old confusing [might be the fact that I didn't play the original/the first game in the reboot though]. I think the concept was very cool, and might have had more I have no idea. But to me, it didn't seem to... Flow. It didn't surprise me as much as I was hoping it would, which left a sour taste in my mouth. But if you aren't a strict kinda story-based person like I am, I think you'll find the story absolutely consuming. For this, I give story a Seven.

More Difficult Than I Anticipated: The difficulty I faced was a lot more than I had anticipated from the game. I actually got stuck on the first part because of how darn confused I was [and how awful I was with the controls having just gotten my XB1 when I got the game lmao]. The mechanics are very interesting, and they definitely made sure they weren't giving you some walk-in-the-park game to play. It's story-driven and skill-driven, and I found that quite charming [though I certainly wasn't charmed when I got stuck because bears are utter jerks in this game. I swear that friggin' bear.... There to test my patience. It really was]. For a seasoned player of the XB1 though, I think it might be a bit easier. I, personally, believe the difficulty deserves an Eight.

Some Pretty Nice Sounds: I personally loved the soundtrack used in this game. I found the music [when it was used] fitting for every scene and part I went to, and the use of nature sounds was great as well. Every movement and action, as far as I know, had a specific sound associated to it. Your movements always had different sounds based on you were. The detail they put in this portion stunned me, awed me. I loved it, I thought it was one of the key points in the game, and for that I give it a solid Eight.

Some Solid Graphics: I really loved the scenes of the game and the details I saw in them. Though it's not very hard to do so with these new consoles and technology, I still find it amazing how much detail they can fit in it. I also liked the variety of scenes they showed; from snowy tundra to sandy dunes, from rocky caves to mossy covered ruins. The game, to me, had plenty of scenes to show off and plenty of interesting little items to flaunt. And flaunt they did. The amazing use of scenery and the detail paid to each little artifact is what makes me give this a Nine.

Holey Cannoli There's a Lot to this Game: There really is a lot to this game, it's the kind you just want to complete due to how much you need to do to achieve that. Hidden artifacts and areas, pieces of lore and plenty of side quests, completing weapons and outfits; there's just so much you can do in the story that it's a little overwhelming! And that's not including the card packs used in multiplayer. If you're like me, you just have to collect all those cards! There's just so much you can do in this game that it almost feels like you won't ever be able to finish it completely! From the sheer amount of what was put into the game and what you have to find, I feel obligated to give this portion a solid Ten.

Now, here are our overall ratings!
True Overall Rating: Eight
Personal Overall Rating: Seven and a half

In Conclusion: I found this game very interesting, albeit very confusing. The depth they had in this game really astonished me, and was a lot more than I expected, which made up for what I thought was a pretty dry and confusing storyline for a newcomer to the series like me. The sounds were very realistic to each scene, and are what I expect to hear if I was really placed in those areas. The graphics were very diverse but very fitting for what I find Tomb Raider to be. The difficulty was definitely not what I had anticipated, especially for someone who was new to the station at the time. I personally don't think it's a very addictive game, and will most likely not play through it again for a long while. All in all, this game caught me by surprise and would have had a higher rating if the storyline hadn't confused me and if I felt it had more of a replay value.

Please note: It has been a bit since I've finished the game. I based this review off of what I could remember, and what I could find online. It has also been a while since I've posted a review, so pardon me if it isn't what you expected.

Thank you for taking your time to read this review, I hope you found it enjoyable. I do recommend playing the game, I just don't think you'll want to play through it twice.
