Power Rangers Time Force (GBA) Review
It can be very disappointing when a gaming company ruins an official game for a different media, like movies or shows. If a show has a following of devoted viewers, it is tempting for the gaming company to put less effort on the game because there can be a mindset that no matter how good or how bad the game turns out, the fans of the show would buy it nevertheless. This is not enjoyable for gamers. After playing this game and beating it [in less than an hour], I believe that Power Rangers Time Force on the Game Boy Advance is a prime example that this game was made with the purpose of appealing to the fans of the show without really making a good effort of designing it.

Graphics: 4
It's ok. With this being made in 2001 on the Game Boy Advance, I'm not that impressed with it. The sprites look kinda blurry and if there is no background context that describes the time period for me, I would have been confused as to who I am fighting in the game. Speaking of which, the background graphics is actually looked pretty good and it is very appropriate for the time period that the Power Rangers traveled into. Other than that, meh.

Sound: 6
Probably the best features in the game. The music was ok. The theme was taken from the TV show, which the quality actually sounded pretty good. Each level has it's own theme that (kinda) goes along with the time period (Ancient Egypt, Rome, Wild West, etc), which is appropriate. That being said, the audio is not that special. You play this game and the music is not something that you would say that is memorable. As a matter of fact, I played the game muted. It wasn't until I started writing this review that I went back to listen to the audio, and guess what? I didn't feel like I missed anything.

Addictiveness: 1
I don't watch Power Rangers (not this version, at least. I did a little of the original ones) and I can't say that I am a fan of the show, but even if I am, I would not even bother thinking about playing this game again. I can understand that there might be die hard fans who might like to own this game and play it a couple of times, but that is only due to feeling nostalgic to the content itself, and not because the game is fun to play. I'm not planning to play this again any time soon, if not at all.

Story: 1
The story is probably as linear and straightforward as the story of the TV show. The Power Rangers are a police force in the year 3000 and they were chasing a mutant called Ransik, who travel through time with the goal of taking over the world. The Power Rangers need to chase down 5 of his "henchmen" in different time periods and capture them before confronting Ransik himself. You always start off in the neighborhood of the 21st century before encountering a mini-boss, and then you chase them into a different time, beat the baddies, and then face the mini bosses and capture them.

Depth: 1
This game really isn't doing anything that is impressive or fun. The game is so simple and can be repetitive because you have to do the same thing for 5 levels. The tutorial stage and the first stage basically defines the entire game.  Your "A" and "B" buttons are your jump and attack buttons, while your "L" and "R" buttons are only useful if you pick up a saber or an energy gun. After that, there are no new mechanics to introduce and no new features in the levels. I expected these controls to be more for older games, like Golden Axe, but not for something on the GBA. I've played better games on the GBA that can make better button combinations than this.

I also think that there are things in the game that could have been used for better features, but it doesn't seem to do so. For example, you can turn into the Quantum Ranger by getting a morpher in the stage. What's so special about the Quantum Ranger? Absolutely nothing. It's just another Ranger that you can be. It is possible that he is the strongest compared to the rest of the Rangers, but it is not obvious when playing the game. The Megazord sequence could have been an opportunity to have a different gameplay, but it's the same thing. Just keep hacking at the mini-boss until your sword is fully charged.

Difficulty: 2
I was playing this game with the difficulty of "normal". There is only one difficulty that is higher than this. With that, the game is super easy to beat. The AI in the game is simply programmed to chase you down or shoot you if you are in their view. If you attack them while preventing them to attack you, you are unstoppable. The abilities of the Power Rangers are too good compared to the locations that they go to. You don't even have to defeat every minion that is in your way and you can just skip through the level by just jumping high enough to avoid them all. It is soo easy that I can't believe there is a password feature in the game. The only part that I can see that can cause a little bit of a challenge is when you face the bosses that are in the latter levels, like stage 4 or 5. They have more health which would take a little longer to defeat. The only possible way that I find to die quickly is if you accidentally fall to your death carelessly, which is possible because the jumping motion can be fairly uncontrollable that being slightly too far or too short could be enough to lose a life. This isn't a huge challenge though since there are revive items on each stage that lets you revive a dead Ranger back alive. You also start off with 3 continues (I think) in case you lose all your Rangers in the stage and you can actually gain continues if you obtain a revive item while not missing any Rangers in the team. To add to the fact that there are only 5 stages, the game is basically giving you every chance to complete the game. It is no wonder that I was able to beat it in about half an hour.

Overall: 1.7
If this was actually a free online flash game, it would be considered pretty decent. But, it's not. This is an actual Game Boy Advance game. This is an actual game that was marketed and sold as the official game of the TV series. This is a game that people needed to spend money for. THIS...is a disappointment. I like to think of games based on a franchise are mediums that attract gamers to be more interested in the franchise itself. This game did not do that. This game is not flawed nor glitchy, but it is a boring with a weak game design. This game made me feel that I wasted my time and I hope that my review would let people know that I played this so you don't have to. If someone physically gave me this game, I would just beat it and then sell it back if possible, because this game is not worth paying money for or owning.
