Mega Man 6 Show Down   tornadocam
Mega Man 6 also known as Rocman 6 is a good game that is under ratted. The main reason Mega Man 6 is under rated is because it was one of the last games released for the NES. The NES by 1994 was pretty much dead. In the fall of 1993 Capcom released Mega Man 6 for the NES. It also came out when Mega Man X debuted for the SNES, which that system was about to reach its peak for the next 3 years. Still Mega Man 6 has had its fair share of hacks. Mega Man 6 show down is a hack of Mega Man 6. So I will be comparing this hack to the original.
Story: 9
The Story was changed around a little bit, but it is still awesome. 8 new robots enter a tournament sponsored by the mysterious Mister X. Dr. Light sends Mega Man just to keep an eye on things. before the tournament can begin Mister X claims he is using the new robots to take over the world. X, claims he has been tired of manipulating Dr. Wily and no longer needs Wily to do his bidding. He challenges Mega Man. Mega Man says he will stop X. So Mega Man enters the tournament to defeat the robot masters and find out who X really is. Now, having mega man enter the tournament is a change from the original game. In the original game Mega Man does not enter the tournament. He heads out to stop Mister X. So that was different.
I really liked having Mega Man enter the tournament. To me that shows creativity. It also is awesome that the maker of this hack kept most of the plot the same. That is really the only change from the original story line. So as a result I give the plot a 9 out of 10.
Graphics and Controls: 9
The graphics in this game are similar to the original game. The only difference is colors are a little bit different. Still the colors seem to go well with the backgrounds. I also like how the layouts have been redone in the boss rooms that was a nice touch. Moreover, the sprites are very good and where pretty  much unchanged from the original game. There also does not appear to be any lags in the game so that is also a plus
The controls are very nice too. Not one time do the controls seem to lag or change speeds. Mega Man 6 had very good controls as is typical in most Mega Man games. I would also like to point out that often times in hacks the controls get tweaked a bit. Sometimes that can be good or bad. I was glad to see that no changes were really made. I give the graphics and controls a 9 out of 10.
Sounds: 10
For the most part the sounds are about the same. However there where a few minor changes. After you defeat a robot master you get Mega Man 2's victory sound. I did not mind that because Mega Man 2 had awesome sound. The boss themes are still the same. The fortress sounds are still the same as well. Mega Man's buster fully charged still sounds powerful. The robot masters weapons also sound the same. Since there really was not any major changes I give the sound a 10 out of 10. Mega Man games are infamous for their wonderful sound this one is no different.
Replay Value: 8
This hack was a fun hack to play. While it is a Mega Man game it feels more like street fighter or Mortal Kombat. The reasoning being the stages were eliminated. I will explain more about that under the depth section. On the other hand Mega Man entered the tournament so the stages being cut way short fits the theme. Even though the stages were wiped out. I had fun playing this game. It is one I will play again. It kind of has its own uniqueness that makes it special. I really like the tournament and battle theme this one has. Therefore, I give the replay value a 8 out of 10.
Depth: 4

Okay if Mega Man 6 Showdown suffers its due to the lack of depth. Almost all Mega Man games have depth to them: long stages, secret areas, items to collect and more. This hack eliminates all of that. The original game had lots of secrets to it. In the original Mega Man 6 you had secret boss rooms, secret areas, long stages, and lots of exploration to do. So it was kind of disappointing to see that eliminated. I understand that they were doing away the stages to fit Mega Man entering the tournament. I get that, but they could have kept some of the stage length. Now what keeps the depth rating from getting lower is that the fortress stages are a little bit longer. That is because they have been made into a run the gauntlet type stages. Anyway, I give the depth a 4 out of 10 rating. It is not typical for most Mega Man games. Even though it fits the concept of Mega Man entering the tournament the depth has been cut way down.

Difficulty: 5

Mega Man 6 (original version) was a game that had its tricky spots but was not unbearable. I would say the original game's difficulty rating would be a 7. The main thing that made Mega Man 6 tricky was the length of the stages and the enemies would just gang up on you sometimes. Well, in this hack the stage length and enemies have all been eliminated. Still this game is easier but its no cakewalk either.

Since Mega Man has entered the tournament this hack difficulty is based so much on the boss battles. The boss battles are not difficult but no so easy either. Some of the Robot Masters have small hit boxes and have very fast attacks. This can cause you to lose health quickly if you do not know what you are doing. The battles are fun though as they test your reflexes, dodging ability and skill. Also to add to the difficulty the fortress stages are gauntlet type matches. You have to defeat several bosses in a row to advance. That can be tricky because if you get killed you have to go back to the very beginning.

On the other hand this version of Mega Man 6 tries to help you out. The game does give you energy tanks in the fortress stages so that helps. Also Mega Man's buster is powerful when fully charged. One shot can do 2-3 units of damage to the bosses. If you can hit the bosses with their weaknesses (beware of small hit boxes though and some weapons consume lots of weapon energy), it really takes them out in no time. As I stated though this can be tricky to pull off.

So having the stages done away with, and the stage enemies eliminated brings down the difficulty rating compared to the original game. While at the same time the robot masters keeping their attacks and getting small hit boxes adds some difficulty. In addition, the gauntlet matches add some difficulty. Thus, I give the difficulty rating a middle of the road rating a 5 out of 10. Nothing really hard but not real easy either.

Overall Rating 8.3

Mega Man 6 Show Down was a fun hack to play and one that is very much enjoyable. I really enjoyed playing this hack. It has quite a bit of things going for it. Still they are some negatives though. But I will start with the positives first.

I really think the maker or makers of this game were trying to get a Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat theme going. I would lean more toward Street Fighter since that is another popular Capcom line in gaming. To me it resembles Street Fighter 2 the World Warrior. The reason being is there are no stage lengths. You go to the Robot Master battle rooms at the start of each stage. That is kind of how the World Warrior worked. You would defeat the world warriors at their stages, but there where no stage lengths. I kind of liked how they did that, though it did add some  negatives too (more on that in just a bit). I liked how the story line was changed a little bit. Having Mega Man enter the tournament to defeat the Robot Masters and Mister X was creative.

Furthermore, I liked how the graphics, controls and sounds were left unchanged. I have played some hacks that really botched things up from the original game. It maintains the original feeling that made Mega Man 6 special. Not to mention the game offers something new but it being more of a battle game instead of the traditional Mega Man games. The difficulty seems to be about right for this type of game.

Now they were some negatives. The biggest negative is why did they have to eliminate all the stage lengths. I understand the makers did it to fit the tournament theme of this game. Still they could have given the stages some length to them while keeping the tournament theme. Also did they really have to eliminate the secret items. To me that is what makes Mega Man games special is the secrets. Even though I stated the difficulty was about right for this type of game it could have been improved. They could have given the Robot masters different attacks that would have been fun and awesome to see.

Overall I give Show Dow a solid 8.3. The negatives in this game are minor and some gamers will not be bothered by them. I am just an old school type gamer. Basically what I see as a negative others may not see. This game has a lot going for it, the tournament theme, the controls left unchanged, the graphics still good, and the gauntlet matches are all a nice touch. So would I recommend this game. Yes, this game is good for all ages. It is also a good game to introduce new Mega Man players to. Its not too difficulty and not too easy either. I would though recommend new players play the original game to. If you are introducing new Mega Man players using this game just be sure to tell them this is not your typical Mega Man Game. At the end of the day this game is quite fun and enjoyable to play with. So yeah 8.3 sounds about right.
