Hyperdimension Neptunia Review   legacyme3
This is a game I've been waiting for for a long time to go down in price.
I wanted this game for a few reasons.
1. I like anime. This game's style in cutscenes is a more anime-esque style.
2. I love JRPGS. Seriously. Favorite genre.
3. It's a PS3 exclusive, and I have vowed to find as many games for 360 fanatics to be jealous of as possible.
I don't want to bore you to tears, so let's get into the game.
Graphics - 6
Graphics are pretty poor for a 2010 game. Even if it's an RPG. It's score only goes lower upon doing a little research. I thought the backgrounds looked familiar. And that's because, surprise, they are. I saw backgrounds from Ar tornelico and Record of Agarest War. Also, some enemies remind me of ones from Trinity Universe. I'm being generous, considering the game had next to no budget... yet still was made well enough to have the need for a sequel (Hyperdimension Neptunia MkII). My favorite part has to be the anime style cutscenes, even if there isn't any animation so much as there is slight moving of the head and lip movements that don't really match the voices.
Sound - 6
I originally rated this a 4.5, rounded down to 4, but I relented upon remembering something I forgot on first reflections... there are japanese voice actors in this game. It's overlooked by some players, but you actually have the option of having your characters speak english or japanese. Take your pick. I don't speak japanese, but I'll assume they are around the same quality as the english VA. The sound gets a major hit though for it's musical score. There isn't very much unique music, and for an RPG, you will hear the same couple songs very often. I'll be honest, when I was grinding I just put on some of my own music, because THEIR music got too old and repetitive.
Addictiveness - 7
I'll probably never play this again, now that I have the platinum trophy, but that's because RPGs are like that. Once you've done everything, there's little reason to go back to it. I've accomplished just about everything. The reason the score is so high is because I didn't take the game out of the PS3 until I platinumed it. It's not a very good game, but it's good enough for me to have warranted as much time as I did.
Story - 9
The piece de resistance. The story was easily the best part of this game. It's between mildly idiotic and stupidly annoying, but it's a good blend of a decent story mixed with random humor. The basic idea is that you are Neptune (Lady Purple Heart), a CPU who was recently beaten up by the other CPUS (one for each major game corporation. White Heart from Lowee, Green Heart from Leanbox, and -my personal favorite- Black Heart from Lastation) and sent down to the world. You have amnesia and meet this adorable ditz with big boobs. You can see where that's going. It's a moe game. You have to save this tome called Histoire and basically prevent another console war. Because that would be bad. The story takes several turns. And if you are like me, and love it when characters break the 4th wall... you will enjoy this. There isn't a 4th wall in this game. It's shattered time and time again. Great story.
Depth - 7
Fair deal to do. There's a lot of dungeons that won't unlock unless you have a certain "share" score for the land the dungeon is in. More so, this is important for pretty much everything. Shares are literally everything. There's a fair deal of DLC, involving a few characters, dungeons, and a new level cap. The cap raises from 99 (which I have hit with all my characters) to 999 (which is completely pointless, anything pass 99 won't gain more than 1 STR point I think... and at level 99 you can already kill most everything right away.) Really, this game is only as deep as you want it to be. You could spend many an hour figuring out the shares and going for the platinum, or you could be like me, and hit the platinum in a few days to a week, depending on how much you play and how experienced you are at RPGs.
Difficulty - 1
I know I give out 1 a lot for difficulty, but this time, I mean it. Hell I wish I could give it a 0. It's almost impossible to die unless you are trying to, or just suck at RPGs. Not only that, but there is very little difference between easy and hard mode. The only difference is that on easy you do less damage, and take less damage, while on hard you take more, but give more damage. The ratios are pretty constant, and a complete newbie to the genre could probably beat this game on hard. On top of that, the story line missions are so mindnumbingly easy to understand, and the controls are so simple, you are never going to forget how to play.
There's more I didn't touch on... but I'll leave that for you to find out... oh, and as for an overall?
Overall - 6.7
It's a bit disappointing. When I buy JRPG's, I generally expect a lot, but I can see now that it's a dying breed. I have heard MK2 is better, but I currently do not have a copy of the game, nor the money to get it. It's a pretty easy game, and it's a great beginner's RPG, but experienced vets will probably want to stay away unless they are doing this purely to boost their trophy score, as this is one of the easier RPGs to platinum on the system.
