Very Fun and Action-Packed   FMAfan123
I must say, I was very late to the Devil May Cry party, having picked up the first DMC game not too long after DmC: Devil May Cry was released. While I was a bit skeptical at first, I can easily say I do not regret that purchase! Here's my review for Devil May Cry.  Graphics: The graphics are decent for a PlayStation 2 game. I've seen other PS2 games that had better graphics and they were released only a year or two after DMC. They probably could've been brushed up a bit, but the game can still be a treat to look at. The overall graphics are okay, but the detail in the levels and enemies are amazing. 7/10   Depth: While the levels can be very expansive in Devil May Cry and there are several extra items scattered about, the game takes a measly four hours to beat, at best. Maybe it'll take you a bit longer on the harder difficulties, for obvious reasons (especially if you're familiar with the Devil May Cry series). Each mission takes 2-7 minuted each, so they ca go by pretty fast. The items in each level can be skipped over, too, as they're up to by before each mission and if you're going on a no-item playthrough... well, that speaks for itself. However, there are also the Secret Missions. There's at least one Secret Mission each level. They're generally rather challenging - a test of skill more than a test of luck. The reward you get for completing a Secret Mission is a decent one. 6/10

Sound: I'll say this right now - the music in this game is phenomenal. It ranges from metal to opera and each song fits the scene it's in. The music in the gameplay is there to get you pumped up for the fighting and it does it's job very well! The songs in Devil May Cry are the songs that I play whenever I turn on another action game. The music is probably the saving grace of the sound. The voice acting can be... bearable. However, those 'bearable' moments are few and far between, as most times the VA sounds absolutely terrible. Whenever the game tries to be emotional, the payoff is pretty bad. 8/10
Addictiveness: Needless to say, the first Devil May Cry is really, really addictive. You get stuck in a hypnotic zen of action-packed gameplay that the problems the game has seems to fade away into obscurity. It may not be as stylish as the game developers made it seem like before it came out, but it's definitely up there. Devil May Cry holds one of the best gameplay system in a hack and slash to date. I'm on my fourth playthrough and I'm nowhere near tired of this game yet! 10/10
Story: The story is far from great, really. The basic plot of the story is that you're a half-human, half-demon hybrid named Dante, whose demon father killed the demon emperor, Mundus, to save the human race. That didn't stop Mundus from having his minions kill Dante's twin brother and mother around 20 years ago, however and our white-haired hero looks for revenge. A lady that looks like Dante's mother appears at his shop one night and warns him about the return of Mundus. That's all explained, somewhat, in the first two or three cutscenes before the story kind of gets set aside for the majority of missions, not coming up again until the last few levels of the game. The story then is verry simple, as the rest of the plot is basically him killing Mundus, saving the human race like his father before him and returning back to his shop with the chick from before, Trish. All in all, it could have been a lot better. 5/10
Difficulty: Whoo boy... Devil May Cry isn't much on the Easy difficulty, but as soon as you hit Normal mode, prepare for the beating of a lifetime. The bosses, and even some of the normal, generic enemies, will use you as a soccer ball. The hardest game ever? No. Pretty darn hard? Yes. Once you become a pro DMC player, it's not as bad but when you're a rookie - or any less than a pro for that matter - you're out of luck. Your health starts out relatively low and a hit from a normal enemy takes off just less than a quarter of your HP in the beginning, not to mention the merciless attacks from bosses and mini-bosses. 8/10
This game is a joy to play as long as you don't go in expecting many unlockable, a good story and decent voice acting. If you just sit down and play the game, you're bound to have a fun time. Let's rock!

Devil May Cry: Leon cant save you here!   ThanatosUnraveld
Something something Resident Evil, something something Hookman build, something something juggling enemies, something something about grumble grumble. And that's how Devil May Cry was made, but you knew that already didn't you? If not then you probably work for Mundus or something crazy like that! But any who back in the day when developers knew they just couldn't let a good game build go to waste they decided to take a clunky version of Resident Evil 4 and make it into a wonderful Capcom franchise that was almost snuffed out before it ever began! One could say the first snuffing was the almost drop of the old RE build, but they saw something in it (probably the super fun juggling mechanics) and they released the original Devil May Cry for the Playstation 2 on August 23rd, 2001. So way before we ever played the actual Resident Evil 4 we played Resident Evil 4! But anyways we've had many other DMC and DMC like games to have came out since then, we even finally got that Resident Evil 4 i keep mentioning, so is the original Devil May Cry still worth picking up or are those devils actually crying now? Lets find out and rock baby!
So if this was a RE game at one point in time does that mean that this game looks like one as well? Well kinda in some ways I would indeed say so. While its not really graphics and would more so fall under gameplay or something, the fixed camera angles are for sure a old Resident Evil thing, even years after this game there was still Resident Evil games with fixed camera angles. But another thing that this game has that works really well with the fixed camera angles is the pre-rendered backgrounds, really next to Resident Evil 2, or some other game that I cant think of (Parasite Eves backgrounds look great as well) I think this game has some of my favorite pre-rendered backgrounds! And they work so well with some of the ominous camera angles that you get that make this game feel a bit like a horror game. I really don't think any of the other DMC games really feel like how this game does. If we aren't talking about the backgrounds and camera then I for sure really like how Dante looks in this game, I feel like his clothes are a bit tight looking, might just be a me thing, but something about how his clothes look here look kinda, classy, or something. Like this Dante is a professional, who has been killing demons for years, so he has to look the part as well, cant be having no loose fitting jacket or something! I think the reds and the blacks are a great contrast to each other, there is also way more black and red on his clothes then in the other games (maybe not DMC 2's Dante) as that's all the colors that make up his attire, he's also wearing full blown gloves and boots. Which later Dante's does as well, but something about this design looks radically different and I'm sad they never really built off this concept. The weapons Dante uses aren't really on the bland side, I just wish there was a bit more of them, really one of my favorite weapon designs in the game (next to good ol' Ebony and Ivory) is Nightmare-B its a super abstract looking gun in the series and I wish more stuff looked like it really. Force Edge and Alastor look pretty great as well, and why has no one said yet about how Sparda looks literally like the Gravelord Greatswords from Dark Souls??? OK it would really be in reverse but once I saw the two different weapons I couldn't unsee it! Lastly I'll just say that the enemies look neat and move on! But for real the Mannequins look really neat and so does their movements, and Phantom is just an awesome looking boss. I also really love how the Sin Scissors and Scythes look, and the Blades are neat to, if sometimes annoying to fight. And I know I randomly mentioned Phantom in there so I'll just say that I think that Griffon doesn't look to interesting of a boss, nor is he really that interesting of a boss in general either. And of course if I like Nightmare-B I think the Nightmare boss looks cool, if it fills me with dread every time I see it and know I gotta fight it. And that is what I think of this super unique looking game, even for the Devil May Cry series, there was and I don't think will ever be a game that somehow feels Gothic and horrific while at the same time, making you feel as Gothic and horrific as the world as this game does. So for that I'll give the graphics a 7 out of 10.
Maaaaaaaan that opening song (which is just one of the battle themes) just gets me so hyped to play this game and hearing cheesy Dante say 'Lets rock, baby!' is so cheesly good I just want all I can get of it! And this game delivers in cheesy dialogue and amazing music! The theme from the boss fights with Mundus, or the song from the fight with nelo angelo. Or just the sounds you hear between the missions in the mission start screen/ buy screen, its all really good and super Devil May Cry-e sounding. Dante himself sounds pretty good with his grunts and HUHs! that he makes when you swing your sword or take damage, this is a little random, but I don't like the Devil Trigger sounds as much as later games, like Dante sounds kinda cool here but sounds way cooler in the later games. I mean the aaaaaaaaaaah! Vergil makes in 3 when he fights you in his Devil Trigger just sounds soooooo great, but nothing sounds like that in this game to me. But when Dante is actually yapping, then I'm listening to every word he says, sadly I don't think he ever actually does do any yapping in this game, he just says a lot of great one liners, and dumb lines you just gotta love. Trish isn't as interesting on paper or as a character though so sadly Dante has to pick up all the slack in those departments in this game. But he always does in all these games! Ya know, minus DMC 2. And I might not like Giffon that much and Phantom looks cool, but they both sound pretty neat. For sure Phantom, his groggy lines sound like they are being pushed through lava to get out of his mouth, I just can't get enough. And I suppose the like 3.1415 lines that Mundus gets are pretty OK. Everyone really in this game just sound like individual bricks of cheese and its just great. It never falls into the realm of Resident Evil 1 nor does it sound like Aerith from Kingdom Hearts 2 (OH THE HORROR THERE!) And of course I gotta point out the 'I SHOULD OF BEEN THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LiGhT!1!1! Line which I cant ever wait to get to when I play DMC1! Its just a classic line that everyone needs to experience within the context of the game. That's all I really gotta say about the sounds of Devil May Cry 1, its pretty classic and they for sure took what was great here and brought it over to probably every single DMC game after this, even DMC 2 has some great music. DMC 1's sound gets a 8 out of 10.
The amount of times I have played Devil May Cry 1 over again is a fairly large amount, maybe not all the way to the end on each go but i have beaten it a fair amount of times. This falls into the Batman; Arkham Asylum category for me where i like to play this game over a lot of the others as its just so different from the rest. How the combat and scoring system is handled in this game is way more simpler and different from the rest of the series that i can just pick this game up and play it. If i really wanna have some fun ill go play Devil May Cry 3, but if i just want to play the game and not put a lot of thought into it, ill play this game on normal mode. It's very similar to why ill sometimes play Chaos Legion (yeah bet you wasn't expecting me to name drop that!) as the combat is kinda barebones, but enough for me to click with to turn my mind off for the night or something. Excpet i think that Chaos Legion has some interesting concepts that DMC 1 doesnt have, that also wasn't fleshed out a whole bunch, so yeah. And if it's not for just being able to play the core mechanics of a Devil May Cry games, it's for the pretty decent boss fights. I wont even mention Phantom as you know hes a good boss, and that Griffon is not a good boss. Nelo Angelo is pretty fun for the first human on human boss fight in the series. Nightmare lives up to its name and it just depends on which part of the Mundus fight we are talking about! If i had to make a list of the DMC games i replayed the most, this would rank either second or third honestly, the only one i know for sure I've replayed more then this one is Devil May Cry 3, but I've played that game more times then most games i own! So ill give Devil May Cry 1s addictivness a 8 out of 10, maybe even like a 8.4 or 8.5 out of 10, that's how easy it is for me to replay it.
With this being a Capcom game the story is either more cheesier than cheese bread or it's about as good as a 5-layer buritto but its missing the cheese (still good, but my cheese man!) And really DMC 1's story is for sure that cheese bread! How bout we get into all that cheeseyness then? The story is that this blonde woman named Trish goes to this shop called Devils Never Cry which is ran by a half demon named Dante and she wants his help taking out a evil demon god thingie named Mundus. Upon meeting her he notices an uncanny resemblance to his mother in her, who was killed along side his younger brother by some demons, and so he takes this mission personally, and a few swords and bullets to the chest! They end up going to Mallet Island, home of the hammers, or something like that. On that island they hope to find the devil that killed his father (wanna know the name?) Aaaaaand really that's bout where I'm going to stop the spoiler free plot portion of this, the plot doesn't gut much crazier but I feel there is a bit of stuff in here that some random people might not want spoiled for them.
After getting to the island a whole lot of not happens and you defeat Mundus and that's it! OK it's a bit more around mission 3 or whatever Dante gets....... introduced to his Devil Trigger in this game and his Force Edge sword, A bit later he fights a black knight who has a amulet on his chest that is very similar to Dante's amulet, oh and I guess that literally all the bosses ever knew of Dante's father Sparda. Later on Dante finds out that the black knight is actually his younger brother Virgil who has been corrupted by darkness or whatever and that with both amulets Dante can make Force Edge into the sword Sparda and enter into basically hell with the amulets. Once he gets to the point of where he's going to take on Mundus it turns out that Trish was working with Mundus to bring Dante there so that he can be defeated by Mundus, like father like son. BUT once it was to the point that Dante was going to die Trish sacrifices herself for him and thus Dante wishes to be:
THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIGHT!
And after that Dante curb stomps the Mundus, turns out Trish isn't dead and you guys blast Mundus to high...... heaven? And then excape an exploding island a few years before Resident Evil 4. Turns out Trish is basically a new version of Dante's mother? Question Mark? But they team up to take on Devils together as a team in no games in this series, but still ya know.
And that's the cute little story of DMC 1, it doesn't do very much but it sets stuff up for what would because a fairly interesting story for the series, and you can tell where a lot of roots 'started' in this game, as its DMC 1 but its not DMC 1 in terms of the plot, but I dunno if they was thinking like that then as some things feel a bit weird, not going to get into specifics, but putting this in the 3rd or 4th games cannon or whatever feels a bit odd. Still I'll give the story...... a 6 out of 10.
Just how does one play a Devil May Cry game? well I shall tell you! Moving around is just about as usual as a normal 3rd person hack and slash game, except its NOT! The movement feels very tanky but outside of that it still feels the same inside combat. Once you get into the meat of it all you should be fine. Once you start fighting you use Circle to attack with your melee and lock on with Square to fire your guns. To do combos you must do attacks in certain patterns, like one attack then wait a second then attack twice after, stuff like that. When you start to lay down attacks you'll notice a Style Meter pop up on the right hand topside of the screen, to build it up just land hits. Later games make it to where you have to do carried attacks to keep the Style Meter going up instead of down, but for this just landing hits will do it, so its easy to get the highest ranking in this game of S. the ranks go from D-S and its a good system, just kinda bare bones really, Later games will even give you highest rankings like SSS and what not. Throughout the game you'll get a few news weapons to play with like a Shotgun or a fire gauntlet weapon called Ifrit. Using them is fun and gives a large variety of different play styles, but sadly you can only hold 1 melee weapon and 1 gun at a time but its still enough to be able to have a lot of different playthoughs of the game. There isn't any multiplayer or anything in this game (I know big surprise) nor is there any other people to play as only Dante from beginning to end every time. But if you want to really have a new playthough then play this game on Dante Must Die mode! So with all that ill give the depth of Devil May Cry a 7 out of 10.
This is a haaaard game! I keep bringing good ol' Phantom up but he's like the first big roadblock and difficulty spike in the game! If you cant beat Phantom the first time around then you'll never get anywhere in this game. I think the biggest thing for me is that when I was younger and I couldn't beat him I couldn't go back and grind to get stronger. DMC 3 has a similar thing with a road block named Cerberus, but if you can't beat him then you can still go back and grind the previous levels to get stronger and beat him. So if you ever get to the point where you are just to weak or whatever, then that mission either got a lot harder or just impossible. After Phantom though I don't think anything to way to hard, maybe Nightmare, but no mission is really to crazy to have to do or anything. Really some missions are super mega short, none are really super mega long but some can kinda get there. Then there's the random points where you gotta do some HORRIBLE platforming with the terrible fixed camera angles and I dunno how they ever figured this was a good idea! Its always so hard and I can never get it on my first try, luckily there is only like 3 sections like this in the whole game. if you can master the kinda now outdated combat then you'll have enough Red Orbs to get a good amount of upgrades that you should be fine by end game to take on the final boss. You'll never be able to upgrade everything your first time around but there is basically New Game Plus and what not to deal with. And like I said there's Dante Must Die mode which will for sure live up to its name. Everything will kill you in like 2 hits no matter what and you'll want to cry by the end so it should be Dante Must Cry! Really that's about it, if you can get down with how this game plays compared to the rest of the series, then you'll be having an OK time, once you get past Phantom! Ill offhandedly mention how in Easy Mode you can use automatic fire to make firing the guns 'easier' but its way slower don't do it! For all that ill give the difficulty a 7 out of 10.
I suppose that's how the Devil May Cry am I right? Thanks to the Resident Evil series we got stuff like DMC and Onimusha so its crazy they all came from the same series! I have a very special place in my heart for this game series and its all thanks to this game that I got into the series and wanted to play more of it. They might of mega-ly dropped the ball with the next game but DMC 3 picked it back up and threw it across the universe! Hopefully the Devils Never Cry because I know I would if this series would to ever end. So if you want to pick up this 8.9 out of 10 game you can on like every console nowadays with the Devil May Cry HD Collection or you can bust out your old PS2 and play the original, which ever you prefer, I personally really like the HD collection version obviously! So get out there and rock baby!

Introduction
I remember playing this originally on the Playstation 2, I was awful at it. My older brothers were much better at it than I could ever. And unfortunately that facts remains still rings true to this day. Now, I have recently beat Devil May Cry once again through the Devil May Cry HD Collection, but I believe it would be much easier to just review each individually starting with the one that started it all. With further to do, it’s time I get started with some story talk.
Story
You play as Dante, a white-haired, red coat wearing, half-demon that hunts demons as his career. Now, Dante is cocky and arrogant yet he’s awesome teeming with such confidence that he’ll mouth off any demon no matter their size and/or strength. Though a lot of his lines sound stupid I enjoy them to be honest. Now, the story of the game is that Dante is hired by a blonde woman named Trish to eliminate the evil that resides at Mallet Island. There he meets an assortment of demons that come to fear and hate him due to the tremendous power inherited from his father, a demon that saved the humans from the demons many centuries ago. The exceptions to this rule are this blob monster and this knight-like character that has something do with Dante. Also I find it pretty cool that each enemy gets their own little cutscene when they’re first introduced. Now, the story is somewhat short and can sound corny at times, but I think it’s told with confidence. But, a game story needs some visuals for it to be told properly.
Graphics
Okay, being of one of the earliest games to arrive on the Playstation 2 when it first released Devil May Cry isn’t going to look fantastic compared to later titles on the system. I mean the dull and dark aesthetic of the whole thing does compliment the whole gothic-like theme of the game. However, texture quality isn’t very good, and certain models can look jaggy at times. Not to mention that the FMVs that play during certain points of the game look blurry and kind of makes your eyes when watching. It also makes me wonder how the FMVs of Final Fantasy IX for the Playstation can look so much than an FMV on the Playstation 2. But, overall I do like the aesthetic of the game, and the models are pretty alright looking for an early PS2 game. Though a good aesthetic is backed up by the quality sound design.
Sound
Okay, some of the sounds in this game aren’t not of the best quality, but I still think that they’re all still pretty great for its era. However on the hand, the voice acting isn’t that great at all if I’m being honest. I hear more from Dante and Trish, and less from the villains, but at times their delivery sounds like someone who just getting into voice acting.  It bothered me a little bit, but it can make a lot of lines sound absolutely horrible. Thankfully though, soundtrack for this game is pretty good. It has this fusion of Rock and some form of Techno that plays during fights, and it sounds pretty cool and makes some fights feel more intense. On the other hand though, the music used in the environment is closer to some light classical music maybe a teensy bit of opera in there as well. And good sound design is integral to making the gameplay a lot more impactful.
Gameplay
Combat
Devil May Cry is a hack n’ slash, which means hitting enemies with your weapon for money, which is called Red Orb in game. Now, Red Orbs are earned by killing enemies, finding them in the environment, and earning them as reward after completing a mission. Now, the Red Orbs you earn from enemies and end-mission reward is based on your Stylish Rank. Your Stylish Rank is a rating of how “stylish” you are during a fight, and it’s raised by unleash a continuous stream of varied attacks without being hit, even though I feel the dodging can be stiff at times. Now, The more stylish you are the higher your stylish rank, which is showcased as a letter grade with D being the lowest and S being the highest of the five grades. Now, whatever rank you have when you kill an enemy will determine the amount of Red Orb they’ll drop. The end-mission reward is essential the same but it works on the average of the Stylish Ranks you earned during the mission. But, the combo system for each melee weapon or Devil Arm is rather simplistic, and firearms aren't strong at all. However, you can purchase new techniques for a weapon, though three of the Devil Arms share the same techniques. Learning these techniques and using them with a great variation together with the combos and firearms to gain and maintain Stylish Ranks. Now, I said that firearms are important to Stylish Ranking as they both help raise and maintain Stylish Ranks. For example: you can hit an enemy into the air then juggle them by constantly shooting with your pistols. However, the usage of firearms in junction with your Devil Arms also needs variation or you risk losing your Stylish Rank, but you can earn and find new firearms. However, switching to a different Devil Arm and firearm requires to go into the menu, selecting the weapon you want, confirming your choice, then finally watch a small animation of the weapon. The constant switching back and forth between the inventory and the game just to change a weapon to get more variation during combat breaks the flow of the whole affair. Now also a bit integral to combat is the Devil Trigger, this empowered state that increases Dante’s power, defense, and grants him a rather slow regeneration ability. Now, those are the basic functions of Devil Trigger during its duration, which be increased with a Purple Orb and restored with White Orbs. Anyways, Devil Trigger grants you access to powerful techniques if they’ve been purchased while you are in that state. But, combat isn’t  everything to this game there’s also exploration.
Exploration
Unlike some previous games within its genre Devil May Cry allows to explore its environment to the fullest extent allowed, which is quite a bit. Now, while the game is separated into missions you are able backtrack to almost the beginning of the island. Now, in order to complete missions you have to find key items scattered to gain access to different area, so in that regard the game kind of has to neat Igavania aspect to it. You may also find Secret Missions, which I will cover more later. You can also find statues that act as the game’s shop, and I’ll talk about how the shop later. Now, you can break certain objects to get some Red Orbs out of them, and you can also find Blue Orb Fragments with four fragments becoming a Blue Orb to increase max health. However, the major issue is exploration is the fixed camera. I found some of the camera angles to be distorting sometimes leading me to make a mistakes, such as missing a ledge or going the wrong direction. But, that isn’t as nearly as frustrating as the Secret Missions.
Secret Missions
Secret Missions are the bane of my existence in this game, I could not for the life of me complete one of them because I’m terrible at this game. But, I know what they are and you get for completing them, so I’ll talk about that instead. Now, Secret Missions are represented in the world as a glowing sign, which when examined will take you to the Secret Mission. A Secret Mission takes place in a separate location where you’re meant to complete the challenge told to you. These challenges are greatly varied and are truly challenging, or frustrating in my case. One of the more interesting challenges involves grabbing a Blue Orb Fragment high up in the air by hopping on the giant floating skulls. Completion of a Secret Mission will get you a Blue Orb Fragment the first time with Yellow Orbs (continues essentially) for the rest of the time. Now, you can’t use items during a Secret Mission, so that seems like a good excuse to start talking about the shop and its contents.
Shop & Items
The game’s shop is represented as a lion-headed goddess holding a large hourglass. Here you can purchase usable items, techniques, and Orbs with Red Orbs. However, you should take note that purchasing an item will increase its price each time until it hits a limit. That can translate to quite a bit of grinding, and more annoying is that you can hold one Vital Star (healing item) at a time while you hold multiple of the other items like Devil Stars (restores Devil Trigger) or Holy Water (Screen Damager). So if you use a Vital Star during a fight, which does heal a lot though, you have to rely on the hope that Green Orbs (healing pickups) can be received from either the enemies or an object. Of course learning when to use items at the right time is all part of the different difficulties.
Difficulty
Now, Devil May Cry is very difficult game especially if you’re terrible at it. In fact when you die when too many times during normal difficulty it will ask you if want to lower the difficulty. I said no to the suggestion as you can’t encounter all of the enemies on easy difficulty, and not to mention the game is less challenging. The completion of a difficulty mode will unlock the next difficulty all the way up to Dante Must Die mode in which enemies have Devil Trigger adding extra challenge to an already challenging game.
Conclusion
Devil May Cry is a great entry in the Hack n’ Slash genre. The story while corny tells itself very competently in my opinion. The game doesn’t look all that great for an early PS2 title, but I do believe that overall aesthetic helps with the gothic theme. It has a pretty cool soundtrack throughout the entire game, but the game’s audio is weakened by the rather subpar voice acting. The game itself is challenging with a combat system that rewards you for putting variety into your combos, and it also rewarded you properly for exploration. All in all I am thankful to Hideki Kamiya for giving us this great yet flawed game.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
