AL: Checkered Flag - Review by Dean2k13   Dean2k13
Today I will be reviewing the a different game called 'Checkered Flag' for the Atari Lynx, I've never reviewed a game for this console so it should be fun! Enjoy!
Alright Lets Go!
Graphics 10/10
I'm not even going to lie, taking into consideration that this is an Atari game .. the graphics in this particular game are brilliant! I can't believe that I said that, but this is why I did. If you look back at my previous reviews you will see I reviewed a terrible game called 'Super Ferrari', that game was basic, there was no landscapes, no track layout, nothing. This game is practically a remake of that game with boosted graphics. There is so much attention to detail and that makes this game's graphics superb! The actual models of the vehicles - the Ferrari's. There is such an improvement on them from 'Super Ferrari', in my opinion it should have been called 'Basic Ferrari' and this game be called 'Super Ferrari' instead. The color scheme used on those vehicles were actually mind blowing-ly good, I'm not kidding. I sincerely adored the visual aids of the HUD located on the screen which shows your speed etc. Very advanced for such a basic console & game. The creators really worked on the landscapes of this game, they went from dull, poor and bland to vibrant, realistic and clear. There is clouds in this game, which were applied with a moving animation allowing them to move, of course. There is a great blue sky complimenting the clouds which is brilliant to see, it ties in with what I said about the games graphics being 'realistic'. There is an element of realism involved within this game's graphics. There was a clear visual of a map on the screen, this allows you to keep track of where your going and your next turn etc. Great use of visual aids. The poor scenery of red rocks evolved into sturdy red mountains that are easy to make out in the distance. Also, this game included an intro video which is NOT common in Atari Games, so that deserves credit too.
Overall, this game is excellent graphics-wise and I rarely say that about any game, never mind an Atari game.
Sound 7/10
This game has pretty decent sounds, as you can tell by introduction to sounds I wasn't too excited when listening to them. This game really lacked sound, as do all Atari games. I feel that games in general should have plenty of sounds, as if the game is quiet and almost silent it can really affect the player of the game, it can make them feel bored and may just close down the game because of that simple factor. It's just the way the brain works. There was a few elements of sound/music within the game, at the start there was an upbeat and cheerful tune which is very effective as it can draw the gamer in and make him/her want to play the game and therefore increases the rate of play of that game. There is really only one other tune which is actually a voice, it is played at the end and start of every race. A random voice will generally begin speaking at the end of every race, letting you know if you've won or not. Very helpful, which is also effective. There isn't much sound in the game but there's enough to make an impact, that's why I scored the sound highly.
Addictiveness 7/10
Involving graphics and sound, this game is actually HIGHLY addictive. The graphics and sound are just so appealing that they attract you to the them, I guess you could call them .. attractive! I'm fascinated by how much detail went into the graphics, which is why I was highly addicted to this game, and you will too! The races in the game are actually quite fun as opposed to 'Super Ferrari' where the races were terrible and very out of sync. That's another factor that drew me into the game too. The fact that there's so many races and so much time to do them in. I'm not joking, if you ever try this game you will find it very addictive, at least for a while. Go on, give it a go and tell us what you think in a review!
Story 4/10
I've said this many, many of times. Atari games don't really have stories, that's why I rated this game so low on it. There is no story in this game, like 'Super Ferrari' there's only a plot, the same plot. You're a racer that is looking to achieve success within the racing community, your goal is the become the best racer that ever drove. That's basically it. You must overcome your enemies, the other racers to be the best, better than all the rest.
Depth 8/10
There is actually a lot of depth to this game, surprisingly. Most Atari games are straight forward single objective games, this game is the complete opposite. There so many tracks in this game, so many different landscapes - adding to the graphics. More incredible tracks means more races, which means longer game-play and thus more depth! Also, this game includes different game modes, you can play in a Tournament or even a single challenge which is great! If you want a normal quick game you can choose the single mode option. There is a lot of depth to this game compared to other Atari games, I'm really glad to see this! All Atari games should be similar to this game, if not better.
Difficulty 4/10
To be fully honest, I didn't find this game difficult at all. With all the improvements in graphics it's made the game a lot more easier to conquer and defeat. I can complete the story very quickly, well the plot. The only real challenges is the harder computer drivers who can occasionally be very, very tough to beat, especially if you crash or go off track. I would recommend this game to someone who likes easy and simple games.
Overall
Overall I found this game amazing for an Atari game and it really deserves credit. The graphics are excellent, the sound isn't that bad, the plot is decent and the depth is brilliant! Although the game isn't that difficult, it's still quite fun and exhilarating to play! Give it a go, it's worth it!

Checkered Flag review for the Atari Lynx!   G@mehe@d
This is one of the most realistic 8-bit driving games I have ever played. Checkered Flag is so strong in the graphics and sound department that you won't believe it's even an 8-bit game. The gameplay is great too but the turns require a lot of planning ahead and the game requires a lot of concentration. I can't even take my eye off the game without crashing or stopping.
GAMEPLAY: The gameplay is pretty good. The drivers are very difficult to pass though and it's hard to go through a track without stopping. I mean seriously if you touch an off road obstacle  you will stop completely. Literally I went 200 MPH and I then touched a haystack and I went from 200 to 0 in 1 millisecond. The cars are a pain to pass too. If you touch one of them you spin out which gets annoying over time. So you have to think and plan an awful lot.
GRAPHICS: I could not help my self, I had to give this a 10. There are several reasons why. The game starts out with a little intro video that's pretty simple but it is impressive. Then you start the game and you see all kinds of scenery on the track. There is a greatly detailed background and plenty of unique scenery. Did I mention how interesting the track designs were.
SOUND: The sound is amazing and will impress you the moment you start the game. You have some complex intro songs that are in the beginning of the game, and a really good voice sample at the beginning of every race. The races do lack music though, making them unexciting.
ADDICTIVENESS: The game is not to addicting. It took me about 5 times to really complete a tournament without quitting the game.
DEPTH: You will certainly get a lot for your buck if you bought this game back in 1991. There are around 18 tracks and plenty of way you can set up your race. You can change the mode, practice, single heat, or
tournament. You can change how many computer players and laps there are, and you can change the color of your car and select what gender you are.
DIFFICULTY: If you want a challenge, play this game. I mentioned how you will stop completely if you hit an off road obstacle and how you will spin out if you hit a car. It's a pain in the butt to gain speed and once you gained speed you will have difficulty with the turns. So if you want a challenge, play this game.
OVERALL RATING 8.5!
