If you read all of my reviews, you might get the idea that I'm a bit obsessed with a certain red-panted plumber. You wouldn't be wrong...but I do like other games, and I thought I'd take a break from pipes and goombas to try out a few of my other favorite game series' mods.

I played Parallel Worlds (and, more successfully, parallel worlds remodel). So I thought, let's see what else is out there. And I found this one. Done by one of the same guys who helped remodel parallel worlds, which was really really good, so I had high hopes going in.

I'm going to warn you straight up: this is REALLY HARD. It's a combination of more (worse) bad-guys, tricky clever puzzles, hidden objects, and a lot...and I do mean a lot...of mazes. MAZES EVERYWHERE. I am not ashamed to admit that I was reduced to looking up the answers a couple of times when I got stuck...

Funny story with that, too. There were two choices of Let's Play videos on YouTube for this game: a German one and an English one. Being a person who speaks only enough German to curse with, I picked the English one. They were both blind play-throughs, which is always a bit annoying. To my vast amusement, the English guy (and his friends who were helping him) were stuck in the SAME PLACE I was...and ended up watching the German's video WHILE THEY WERE MAKING THEIR OWN VIDEO. (You can hear his friend, at one point, saying, "the German guy's going through that door....past that, keep going...") Eventually, the three of us figured it out, but it really made me laugh.

So, anyway. I'm going to break it down this way:

The Good: great hack, interesting and challenging puzzles, great graphics. Really enjoyable.

The Bad: I assume this was a very early hack in PuzzleDude's history; he did some really great things, but there are some really annoying (terrible) things as well. For one thing, NONE OF THE CONVERSATIONS were changed. So people are telling you to go places that no longer apply-the green book was one. The princesses all say the same thing (the story is exactly the same, no changes there). And the sage guy in the dessert is MISSING. I'm telling you, spoiler alert ect. ect., that he NEVER SHOWS UP anywhere. Just pretend you talked to him and push on. The game certainly does. OH and you will probably have to look up the locations of a few items, because there is no help to be had in the game whatsoever. Things like the dash boots and the bow are in completely different places and there are no hints, no guides, nothing. Have fun with that. (I found a couple of them on my own and cheated on a couple of them because I was getting very tired and just wanted to finish the game). And the worst thing, the most frustrating thing in the whole game, are the mazes. You can't EVER just walk from one place to the other. Oooooh noooo. You have to navigate this long, convoluted maze made up of repeating non-destroy-able barrier items (tree stumps, rocks, skeletons). Just getting from your house to the palace is a long, winding road. It's frustrating and a bit unnecessary, in my opinion. It didn't add anything to the game that I couldn't have done without. And the final thing, which was just lazy in my opinion, was that you never get to run around in the dark world. You warp to the temple and all the dungeons are literally right there. No fun pig-guys, no exploring a different map, nothing. I think he just got lazy and didn't want to finish a second map. That's what it felt like, anyway.

Graphics: 10
Not a lot of changes here. The new additions, new puzzle-areas, and different dungeons blend together quite seamlessly. Overall it was a beautiful game to start with and Puzzledude's quest is still beautiful, so it works.

Sound: 10
Again, just riding on the original score here. No changes I could detect (it's been awhile since I played it, but I'm pretty sure all the same music was in the same place). Zelda has some amazing music, so good job on not messing it up, I guess.

Addictiveness: 7
I only gave it a 7 because for some people, the sheer insane wth?ness of some of the puzzles is going to drive them away. I almost quit a couple of times simply because it was so difficult. I stuck to it because I wanted to get to the end; that determination might hold most people the same way it did me. And the sense of accomplishment that you get with each dungeon is terrific, so that's another draw. I think I had more actual fun playing the original game, because it wasn't so hard.

Story: 7
I would rate the original story at about an 8, so I obviously took a bit off of Puzzledude's. Why? Because there was no change. You did all this modification and you couldn't change any part of the story? Even the parts where they sent me in the complete wrong direction (repeatedly?). Jeeze. I thought it was a wasted opportunity.

Depth: 6
Obviously the lack of a Dark World hurts this game tremendously. And other things too-things like getting a tempered sword in a chest in a dungeon instead of having to reunite the dwarves. Little touches that were missing that you find yourself thinking of wistfully. I thought I remembered there was more in the forest with the master sword, for example, than there was in this game.

Difficulty: 9
The difficulty in this game is insane. Not just the enemies; of course, bosses seem to have more hitpoints (and there are, of course, the now-obligatory 'extra added spike traps!' in the bosses' rooms) and there are more higher-ranked enemies everywhere. And more spikes, and pits, and spikes and pits, and spike pits right on the other side of doors, and moving escalators, and bounce-jumps-onto-disappearing-floors-with-spike-fields-and-moving-fireball-spinners....whew.

The really insane part is the sheer number of ...huuuuh? moments when you're trying to figure out the puzzles. I'm not going to give things away except that the title of this review is a very important thing to remember. Ok? Ok. The number of times I walked into a room, stopped, and went "...whaaaat the (expletive deleted)" I've warned you. Think I'm joking? See for yourself.

Overall:  8.1 Overall, I highly recommend this, even as infuriatingly confusing and difficult as it is, because it really is amazing. For a game that made me stab the F2 key every three seconds in places, I had a blast working my way through the tricky dungeons and winning each new crystal. If you're the kind of person who can't handle a challenge, pass right on by this one. If, like me, you crave a challenge and the thrill of victory: you know you want it. Go get it.

vanelan : Meh. I tried adjusting some stuff but I haven't really done anything with this type of thing for a year or so, and I've forgotten more than I remember I think. Ah well. Thanks for letting me know though. Is it really bad? Like, should I switch layouts? Or is it just more annoying? Be honest-I don't wanna make anyone's screens wonky!

I'm going to have to agree with almost everyone on this thread. PC gaming is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong; I own several game systems and I love my PS3, but if I can, I usually get the game on my PC. Why? Well, to sum it up-MODDING. Yes, I'm a modder. I got addicted to modding games at a young age, lol.

I mean, c'mon. Who doesn't want to have the all-naked-all-the-time Dragons Age Origins Mod? Huh? HUH? (Well, ok, not me honestly, XD The biggest mod i used on that game was the Winter Forge so I could make a whole outfit of armor called "Massive Pectorals" and "Many Thews" with super-sweet bonuses, mmm. And the pink legwarmers of speed and the tie-tack of magic resistance, yah!)

With the addition of a game controller, there really isn't any great advantage to buying a system. You can get emulators for almost every system out there, so why bother?

Sorry, I'm not going to do the pros and cons thing.

IgorBird122 : Thank you for you reply! I think I'm going to go ahead and just buy it once I build the Viz back up. Even if it doesn't work, it's not a bad thing to have I suppose.

thecrazyguy: If you do test it out, let me know  ok? That would be great! Thank you!

I apologize if this is answered somewhere else; I looked and I didn't find a definitive answer, so I just wanted to ask before I spend the extra Viz. Does the game download accelerator work with the playstation games? (Not complaining, I swear!) I ask this as I sit idly waiting for my game to download. I don't have any issues with normal game downloads, so if it doesn't work I won't bother buying it.

Sorry again if this is a re-ask or if this is somewhere written down already.

Thank you!

I love Retro games, don't get me wrong, but I'd have to say modern games. The advances in technology really make things better-as much as I adore some of the older Zelda games, for example, they just don't hold a candle against Ocarina of Time (and that's not even a particularly new game!)

And besides, there's no way they could have pulled off Overlord in the Retro days, and that's one of my favorite games of all time.

(Plus the music is better now. Thank god. If there's anything I HATE about retro games it's usually the music. My ears, my poor bleeding ears...make it stop...)

I did what I always do. Sleep. Sleeeeep. I'm too old for staying up all night and partying. And besides, it's just another night. It's not like something magical happens at midnight that instantly changes my whole life.

So yeah. I sleep. Happy new year.

I prefer blogs to vlogs, to be honest. Although it's fun to watch the person, sometimes their personality gets in the way of whatever information they're trying to give you. I've watched vlogs where I just spent the entire time thinking, 'oh, my god, what a complete dork'. And during those times, I usually have no idea what the person was saying. I know that sounds kind of mean, but it's true.

With blogs, you can read the information and process it without the burden of separating the personality from the information. Sure you can get a feeling for a person through how they write, but it's not intrusive, like watching their video. Beside that, you can pause to absorb or re-read information if it didn't process correctly the first time. Again, you can back up a vlog, but what a pain.

As far as I am concerned, blogs are for information. Vlogs are for entertainment. I don't watch vlogs for really important stuff, mostly just nerdly debates and hilarious comics doing shtick. If I really want to read about something important, I would choose a blog every time.

Ms. Pac-man, hands down.

The mazes were varied and not just the same thing over and over and I loved the ability to use the turbo. Plus being able to set the difficulty was much better, because then even people who weren't that great at it could play.

I will always love the original, but given the choice I'd pick Ms. Pac-man every time.

I'm going to agree, the title was very odd.

I have to admit that I usually perform a kind of strip-down throughout the night. I like to wear a pair of sleep-pants and a t-shirt to bed because I'm usually cold at the start of the night, but by morning I usually wake up without a shirt. I think I'm getting overly warm in the middle of the night and waking up just enough to peel off my shirt before going back to bed.

I haven't yet woken up without my pants, but I suppose if it got warm enough...

I can't wear socks at all. They won't survive the night and I usually have a heck of a time finding them in the morning (all twisted up in my sheets). I've completely given up on even trying, to be honest.

There are so many unwanted children in this world. So many parents who are unfit for raising a child, mentally and emotionally, not to mention financially. So many broken, terrible families who only cause pain and trouble for the children they uncaringly bring into the world.

The only reason to deny gay adoption is on religious means, which to some is the end of the matter. I feel that it would be so much better for the unwanted children of this world to have a loving, supportive couple who not only want the child from start to finish and are financially set, stable and ready for children than to leave them in the foster system.

The thinking behind denying gay adoption is broken, based in the dark ages, and completely stupid. I don't usually speak out so strongly against religious bias (I believe that everyone has a right to believe what they believe, no matter how wrong-headed or cruel it might be) but in this case, it angers me that loving, desperately willing couples are being denied the opportunity to share their love, life experiences, money, home, heart and stability to children who desperately need all of those things.

I understand if you don't agree that being gay is a good thing. But think about how kids come out of the foster care system-sure there's good ones, but there are more bad ones and many of the kids of the foster system are fundamentally broken. Why don't we give these kids a fighting chance?

Singelli : Thanks, at least I know that it's not messing anyone else's screen up.

I figured it was something on my end, to be honest, but I have no idea what it could be. This is the same computer I had, the same browser...I must have done something. If it's not bothering anyone else I'll just ignore it. It's not that big of a deal.

Thanks for answering me-as always, you're so helpful!

If you've read my reviews before, you might notice that I'm a bit addicted to Super Mario game hacks. It's true! I can't help it-Super Mario was my first video game love and no matter how old I get, I still love the little plumber. Even if some of his games have been....less than stellar. (Not naming any names.) So the fact that there were so many different hacks of my old favorite games on Vizzed was one of the biggest draws for me to this game site.

This is another hack of Super Mario World. I think that's the most-hacked Mario game on here-I could be wrong, but it seems like it. And I've played many, many different varieties of these games. Some have been terrible, a few have been great. And some, like this game, are just...ok. Pretty good. Not bad. Eh. I think you get the idea.

If you're looking for a fantastic hack of Super Mario World, I'd suggest another version-maybe The Second Reality Project. If you're looking for something fun to play that feels like the original game but different, this isn't a bad game to pick up.

There's nothing about it that really is really good or really bad. It doesn't do a lot to change the basic game. No snazzy new enemies, no awesome new ideas. Just solid Super Mario game action with a slightly different package.

On to the numbers!

Graphics: 8
Pretty standard stuff for the most part. Some graphic hacks of enemies (the flying sperm-goomba ghosts were hilarious, sorry.) Some background changes, mostly color-swaps and some texture changes. Pretty effective overall-there wasn't anywhere that made my eyes bleed or messed with my head too much, which was nice. I can't tell if some of the monsters were actual graphic-changes or just imports from other games, but if they were imports they were at least blended very well.

Sound: 8
Once again, pretty basic. I gave it a slightly higher than normal score because I thought the choices were really effective in a couple of place. Didn't hear anything new as far as I know.

Addictiveness: 6
Addictive if you liked the original. The difficulty level (see below) was a bit too high to be really additive; I had to rage-quit a few more times than I like. I kept coming back, so I guess it didn't do too bad a job hooking me. Or I'm just a sucker. Could be that, I suppose.

Story: 5
Uh. I know that Super Mario Brothers doesn't have much of a story to begin with-save the princess. Repeat ad-naseum. This game takes that to a whole new level by...not having a story? They tell you right off the bat that 'someone stole the scenario.' and then you just right into it. Play through and it makes sense, but it starts you off going 'Uh, ok..."

Depth: 8
I'm going a bit higher than normal on a Super Mario World hack for depth because there are so...many....freakin...red....worlds. Seriously, there's one place where almost every world has a second exit. And they're not easy to find, either. No walk-in-the-park Ooh lookie, there's the key' secret exits. Sometimes you end up backtracking over the whole level like three times carrying different pow-blocks and you get so confused. I started skipping some of them just because I wanted to keep going, and I never do that.

Difficulty: 8
I would rate the original Super Mario Brothers about a 5 for difficulty (not counting the star-road secret areas, which were insane.) This game is much harder. There are stupid jumps, enemies everywhere, crazy convoluted pathways, annoying 'time the jump just right to hit the turtle' jumps, seemingly impossible-to-not-get-hit flying bomb areas, ghost-block-ladder-fun times...long story short, it's hard. Not quite 'rage-quit-forever' hard but there were a few times I put the controller down and said "Ok, yeah, I quit." I also made copious use of the save-state, something I try not to do in games I'm playing to review. (I think it's cheating. It's cheating. Don't try to argue with me about it.) I had to, so I could get through some of the more frustrating areas.

Overall: 7
So, yeah, overall I'm going to go with a 7. Not great, not bad. Worth playing if you can be persistent and deal with some frustrating deaths. And if you love searching for hidden clues, this is really a good one for you. I already know some people will argue with me about the difficulty, but I'm an average-skill player, not one of the really good ones, so I review 'em like I see 'em.

Give it a try and tell me what you think.

I was gone for awhile, and I just switched to this layout after coming back. I remember it looked great way back when I made it, but it's just a bit off. And another layout I bought looks fine in the preview but it's just a bit too big and weirdly a bit off-center. Is this something I'm doing wrong? A setting I have set wrong? Is anyone else even seeing this issue? The one on this layout I'm talking about is the fact that the pink text box just overlays the right-hand column. I swear it didn't used to do that. The wall-E one is slightly too large. Help-am I going a bit insane or what?
