According to the laws of the game, USA should definitely have had more stoppage time and, when there is any time wasting during stoppage time, that time is supposed to be added onto the end of the fourth official's estimation (Belgium wasted more than half of the stoppage time taking a goal kick and that time was not added on)
You don't sound like a USA homer, football fans from all over the world (apart from Belgium again) were very frustrated and disappointed that the USA's honesty and passion for the game seemed to lose out to Belgium's cynical and underhanded tactics

I believe those extra few minutes could have made all the difference as the Belgian midfield were absolutely exhausted and it was wave after wave of USA attack after Julian Green's goal
I also believe that if the USA had got to extra time, Tim Howard would have been the hero in the penalty shoot out

When you say the stoppage time thing is bugging you, do you mean the extra time when the match is level at full time (90 minutes) ?
If so, that ruling was brought into the game to replace the previous system which had the captains of each team tossing a coin to see which team progresses to the next stage
Which would be an extremely unsatisfying and frustrating way to end a team's tournament

If you meant the added time at the end of each half of play, indicated by the fourth official as a minimum of, for example, two , three or four minutes
That replaced the previous system which was that the amount of time added for injuries, substitutions, time wasting by the leading team etc. was just at the discretion of the referee so no-one knew how long they had
Unfortunately, this system is still subject to abuse from less scrupulous teams so I agree with you, it could do with some further improvements
