Size doesn't change a whole lot if you switch from one form of coding to another. Generally, your best bet is to set the width to either 800px (since that's the size of some of the smaller screens) or 100% (so it will reveal more of the picture depending on the size of the screen). If the screen is somehow wider than the picture, it won't stretch.

Keep in mind that the size limit is for users who have smaller screens. All of my layouts have the main theme restricted to 800px wide, but are actually 1200px wide. My layouts are set to 100%, so they don't stretch the page, but are capable of stretching if necessary.
