Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour you lost the game
Mario & Luigi: Brothership This one doesn't look as charming as the old ones in my opinion.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond I like this one slightly more because of Dialga (always thought Palkia looked weird). Still not a strong entry in the series though!
Pokémon Shining Pearl They could have done so much more with this! Not a fan of the overworld graphics

Pokemon Johansson
It’s safe to say that Pokemon as a franchise has entered a whole new era with the release of the Nintendo Switch titles. Pokemon used to be a game that you would play on your tiny handheld, hidden under the covers at night hoping your mom didn’t walk in and catch you. Definitely not a true story. But it’s true to say that it was a mindblowing experience finally being able to play on the big screen in my bedroom. I thought that would have always been reserved for spin-off games like Pokepark or the Stadium games, etc.

Pokemon Sword and Shield truly were the turning points in this aspect. Despite my numerous issues with those titles, which I’ve gone more in depth on in a different review, I can’t deny that they are some of the most important games in the series. A console is generally much more powerful than a tiny handheld system, and it should mark the start of even better Pokemon games. Well in theory anyway. You see, the Nintendo Switch was certainly a beast compared to the crappy 3DS, but it is not without its struggles. When you compare its power to other systems of the recent console generations, it’s clear the Switch is lagging behind. It hasn’t stopped the Switch as a whole, it’s on its way to become the number 1 sold console of all time, after all. But it does hinder the capabilities of some of its titles, and that sadly includes Pokemon.

Famous examples of this are the now infamous “Dexit”, a term coined by the broader Pokemon community after the developers made the decision to remove a bunch of Pokemon from the game data. In their words, this was due to a lack of space/power and so they could prioritize other aspects of the game. Long story short, fans were outraged and Pokemon Sword and Shield still had terrible graphics and processing in important places like the advertised Wild Zone. But okay, everyone can miss every now and then. Maybe Sword and Shield weren’t what I, and many others, would have wanted them to be... Read the rest of this Review
Persona 4 Golden

BEARSONA!!!
After being first introduced to the Persona franchise through Joker being added to smash, as well as my friend Clayton (SonicOlmstead) calling an installment of it (Persona 5 Royal) his favorite game of all time, I couldn’t help but become curious about trying it myself. I’ve always enjoyed RPG’s, specifically JRPG’s, and thought it would be a great addition to my gaming catalogue. Plus it was 2020, the pandemic was going on, so I had plenty of time to spare and a dusty old laptop that needed some activity. Clayton and I played through a different title, Persona 3 FES, to start off. The first two games in the franchise are quite dated and don’t have the same playstyle so it was a great starting point. Neither of us had played the game before so even though he was aware of a lot of the core game mechanics from the franchise, it still felt like we were partaking on a brand new adventure together.

That isn’t the game I’m reviewing today, however. A story for a different time. All that’s relevant is to say that I absolutely loved the whole experience and was hooked on the franchise. Unfortunately I thought it might be the only title I would get to experience firsthand for quite some time, as at the time none of them were playable on the only modern console I own: the Nintendo Switch.

The opportunity had to wait several years. It finally came in 2024 in the form of Persona 4. Specifically, the enhanced version of Persona 4: Persona 4 Golden, as it was added to Steam of all places. See, every ‘modern’ Persona game (typically used to refer to Persona 3 through 5) gets an initial release date, and then several years later the game gets re-released in an enhanced version, slightly altering the name of the game and adding some content (New characters, expanding the main story, new hidden boss fights, new music, …). For someone playing through the already released titles, I would highly recommend playing the enhanced versions for the fu... Read the rest of this Review

En Garde! Or just stand there
Pokemon has captured me ever since I was a little boy. I still look forward to every new release, and it will never fully leave me. I mean, my username is quite literally a Pokemon, and the best one at that.

One of my biggest dreams growing up was to have a fully immersive and 3D Pokemon Game, with so much exploration potential. When Pokemon made the jump to the 3DS that should have been it, but the limitations of that system made the following games, X/Y and Sun/Moon some of my least favorites to date. It was essentially the same thing as all the entries before, with now 8 directions you can travel in instead of 4! I also felt like the writing took a big step backwards when compared to the genius of the Gen 5 games.

To my delight, two generations would be all that I would have to endure on the 3DS system. A new generation of consoles brought a new Nintendo console with it as well. Enter the Nintendo Switch. The first crossover between a handheld and a traditional console, the Nintendo Switch was an innovative idea that I found intriguing. Still, I did not immediately purchase the console. Mainly because I was broke, but also because there was something I was waiting for: Pokemon.

Finally in 2019, the time came. A new Pokemon game was on the horizon. On this more powerful and creative console. This must be a recipe for success, right? I was initially very high on Sword and Shield. The names are not included in this statement, of course. I thought it couldn’t get worse after X and Y, or Sun and Moon, but the corny names for the titles just keep on coming, huh. Still, what little footage we saw looked exciting, and I actually really liked several of the Pokemon they chose to reveal to us prior to the launch of the game. Rolycoly became an instant hit with me, and I would go on to swear on everything that I would use one on my team. Aside from the Pokemon I thought the game looked great from a graphical perspective. Certainly miles ahead o... Read the rest of this Review
Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Professor, I've solved it!
As a lifelong Ace Attorney fan, I initially viewed the Professor Layton series as some sort of competitor to the franchise I was in love with. I didn’t ever want to delve deeper or even give the games a try. I just didn’t want anything to do with it at all. Looking back now I am a bit sad that I let myself get involved in some pathetic franchise rivalry, which I have often criticized other people for. Thankfully a game came to my attention that started a shift in my mindset. In 2012 Capcom cooperated with Level-5 and did the impossible: the legendary Phoenix Wright meets the legendary Professor Hershel Layton, combining aspects of both franchises into one adventure. It’s through that game that I first got introduced to what Professor Layton was all about, and I got charmed by the gameplay style and the characters present in the story.

Still, it didn’t make me start playing the Layton games right away. In fact, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I randomly decided enough was enough and I should give it a go. I’m glad that I did. As these games have a progressive story throughout the installments, naturally I landed on the first game ever released featuring the top hat wearing gentleman.

Gameplay

Professor Layton and the Curious Village was released worldwide in 2008 for the Nintendo DS. It’s an adventure game that uses puzzles throughout the story as its main gameplay gimmick. The game makes use of the touch features on the Nintendo DS by presenting the player with all sorts of puzzles for which drawing, writing, or dragging objects is necessary.

Each puzzle is given an arbitrary difficulty rating in the form of ‘Picarats’. The more picarats Layton obtains by solving the puzzle, the harder it is. Said Picarats can then be used to buy things in other areas of the game, to unlock features or extra puzzles. Every puzzle includes some hints that the player can opt to make use of, although at the cost ... Read the rest of this Review
Persona 5 Royal

For Real?! Persona 5 Royal is one of the greatest games of all time?
Been a while since doing one of these, and what better game to review than the one I spent hundreds of hours on basically all throughout this year.

Persona 5 originally released in 2016, but a few years later in 2019 an expanded and improved version, Royal, was released. Since I ended up playing it on the Nintendo Switch port (released in 2022), that’s where I’m posting this review.

Persona is a JRPG (Japanese role-playing-game) franchise, and as such the gameplay reflects this both in and out of combat. A lot of focus is put on world building, character development, and the concept of making the player explore moral dilemmas and often controversial societal themes. In battle you’ll make use of different menus and action commands to deal damage and take on enemies. As is common with a lot of JRPG games, there are also external factors like character stories or quests that can give you rewards, powerups and other useful items in battle.

Graphics

As a Playstation 3 (and 4) release, Persona 5 really took advantage of the higher specs to take a huge leap in terms of graphics compared to the earlier Playstation 2 releases, including Persona 3 and 4. Everything looks cleaner, HD, and the color palette is deliberately chosen to accentuate the characters. The story is filled with animated cutscenes that are well produced and feel fun and immersive. It’s nice to transition from a classic RPG overhead look to a full on animation.

The game has a certain art style that you can find everywhere. An example of this are the textboxes when characters talk, with a few letters in every name being inverted in color. Black and white are recurring colors that again refer back to the moral dilemmas the game is centered on.

The game distinguishes between important characters and NPCs by only giving the important ones (named) a detailed face and outfit. This way it’s easy to find the relevant characters in certa... Read the rest of this Review

Important Trainers & Wally
Hey y’all! In this fun guide I’m just going to go over some important fights in the game, including rival battles, Gym Leaders, evil team admins, and the Elite Four. With most fights I will also include a few recommended Pokemon in case you’re still struggling with the fight. Please take into account that I’m not telling you what to use, as I personally enjoy the more underrated and weaker Pokemon more as well. This is just telling you what Pokemon on paper has the best matchup. Colored text indicates what starter you chose, so green text would be for the people who chose Treecko.

Let’s get started!

Bendan / May #1 (Route 103)

[blue]Treecko (Level 5)

Pound
Leer

[green]Torchic (Level 5)

Scratch
Growl

[red]Mudkip (Level 5)

Tackle
Growl

Suggestion #1

Your starter. I mean you don’t really have a choice here as Pokeballs aren’t available to you just yet. Since May’s starter doesn’t have an elemental move yet all you can really do is spam Tackle, Scratch or Pound until you win. I recommend leveling up to level 6 at least in the wild so you have the advantage, or else you might be forced to use your potion.

Gym Leader #1, Roxanne (Rustboro City Gym)

The next challenger you’ll face is Roxanne, your first gym leader who specializes in Rock types. You might think Rock types are easy pickings, but don’t underestimate her. Unlike Brock she actually tends to use Rock type attacks, which can deal supper effective damage to a big amount of the early game Pokemon.

Geodude (Rock and Ground type; Level 12)

Rock Tomb
Rock Throw
Tackle
Defense Curl

Geodude (Rock and Ground type; Level 12)

Nosepass (Rock type; Level 15)

Pokemon Emerald - Location Guide
Hey all! This is a guide showing you what Pokemon can be caught in what area, in chronological order of beating the game! Alongside the generic list of Pokemon I’ve also put in my own opinions and recommendations should you be unsure of what to add to your team! Lastly, I won’t cover how to get all the Legendary Pokemon as there is a beautiful guide on that already that can be found hereEnjoy!
Route 101
Gift Pokemon - Treecko (Grass), Torchic (Fire, Fighting), or Mudkip (Water, Ground)
Any starter will help you out greatly during your adventure. Of the three Mudkip is considered the easiest option as its eventual typing gives it only one weakness. Torchic is the most offensive of the three but will need some team support to counter some of its weaknesses. Treecko will struggle early on due to its poor moveset. Once you get Leaf Blade around level 30 it will finally become useful.
Wild Pokemon - Wurmple (Bug, Flying/Poison), Poochyena (Dark), and Zigzagoon (Normal)
None of these are particularly powerful. Wurmple has two possible evolutions but they are determined by chance so you might have to catch a couple to get the one you want. I would recommend catching a Zigzagoon for later on. It has the ability Pick-Up which allows it to find items after almost every battle, and they can range from regular potions to rare candies if you’re lucky.
Oldale Town
There are no Pokemon available here!
Route 103
Wild Pokemon - Poochyena (Dark), Zigzagoon (Normal), and Wingull (Water, Flying)
In the grass you will find one new face, namely Wingull. At this point in the game it’s not a bad option for your team if your starter is Torchic or Treecko as it covers some of their weaknesses. Still, it will be fairly underwhelming later on and I recommend getting a better water type.

Paper Mario: Boss Guide
Hello and welcome to my Paper Mario Boss guide! This guide will show you everything you want to know from bosses, from
hp, to attacks, to strategies! Sometimes there are boss fights between chapters; I’ll add those to the chapter before them.
So, let’s get started.

===========================
Prologue: A Plea from the Stars
===========================

~ Bowser ~

Once Mario finds Peach in the hallways, the castle gets lifted up in the sky, and Bowser will smash through the window.
He will challenge you to a fight.

His HP is sadly unknown, he has a defense of 0 (meaning he won’t cut down the power of your attacks) and an attack power
of 1 (meaning he’ll do 1 damage with each attack).

Not much strategy involved, all you can do is jump, which deals 1 damage to bowser.
His attack is scratching Mario, which also deals 1 damage.

This goes on for about three turns, on the fourth turn, bowser will use the star rod he stole,
to increase his defense to at least 1, and his attack power to 3.

You will notice that with the defense, you can’t damage him, and he does 3 damage for each hit.
This goes on until Mario has 1 heart left. You will once again do no damage, and bowser will use a new
attack, spitting flames at you that deal 10 damage, fainting Mario.
Don’t worry, you are scripted to lose that fight.

~ Jr. Troopa ~

Once Mario and Goompa find the hammer and head back, an angry Koopa, covered in its shell,
will challenge them to a fight.

Jr. Troopa has a total HP of five, an attack of 1, and a defense of 0.

He attacks by jumping on Mario.

There is also no tactic involved in this fight. Just jump or hammer, and he eventually will fall.

~ The Goomba Bros ~

Once Mario and his new partn... Read the rest of this Guide

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Are you stuck? Have you failed to find the truth, and want to look up something really quick?
Now’s your chance! I can’t stop you from just playing the game along with this, but it’s more fun not to.
I’m not explaining the cut-scenes, unless you have to point something out.

I will be playing the game as I make this series of walkthroughs to be able to provide
screenshots when needed. I’m not explaining all the dialogs, as I’m assuming
you’re at least playing along with this, so you can read them for yourself.
Plus it would be hard to find something here and hard to organize it on my part.

Anyway, let’s get started.

====================================
~ TRIAL ONE: THE FIRST TURNABOUT ~
====================================

Since this is the first case, I’ll explain some things.
Right after the cut-scene, you’ll find
yourself in a court lobby. As you go on with the dialog, you’ll see this ‘court
record’ button:

Press it and this screen will open:

This list will grow as we continue.
You can always click the court record button during conversations and have another look
at evidence. You can click the profile button, which is located in the same
place the court record button was, and it will take you to a similar list. Only
in this list you will find information on those involved in the case. That’s
all you can do there for now.

Moving on.
We are now in court. In the mini cut-scene
you can see the overlook of the room really quick. That’s where you’ll be standing.
Now since this is your first trial, the
Judge will ask you some questions, to see if you are ready. Don’t worry, one
look at that court record can answer everything.
