Life is Strange

Life is Strange - A Unique Look on Life
In today’s world of gaming we see many games that emphasize multiplayer aspects. Game such as League of Legends, Dota 2, and CS:GO populate the streaming market on twitch.tv. This is for good reason, as generally the games have an e-sports scene and have many players to follow. However, an occasional single-player game will rise to prominence on the website. This can be seen recently with the games Dark Souls III and Fallout 4. However, the message is clear. In general, games need a large multiplayer component to be relevant, and that is seen in some changes by some developers (see: ESO and Battleborn). However, in the single-player world, things like the Walking Dead and Quantum Break have appeared which involve the release of separate “episodes” to truly get to experience the game. One of the less recent games that embodies this is Life is Strange, a single-player game developed by Dontnod and published by Square Enix. As with the previously mentioned episodic games, Life is Strange pushed support for episodic gaming further in favor by showing story still matters, not just multiplayer.
In Life is Strange, you follow the antics of one Max Caulfield, a student recently admitted to Blackwell Academy, which is a prestigious school of the arts. However, the game is not just about this simple high school adventure. Max witnesses a girl being shot, and suddenly discovers she has the ability to rewind time. Throughout the game Max learns that her choices have effects on later events. Some of these choices are directly affected by the player, which lead to different events happening. However, some of the choices do not affect the game by much at all. With the choices the player can make, he/she can create their own morality compass. Additionally, certain choices can affect the knowledge you have when making other choices later. In addition to using rewind abilities to gain knowledge, the player must use them for puzzles. And, while it may seem like an afterth... Read the rest of this Review

Bravely Default - Where the MLB Cries
You know how sometimes you say you hate something when you really think it's really really good?  Well I hate Bravely Default.  I hate this game with a burning passion.  The fact that I couldn't play it on anything but the easiest difficulty makes me cry.  Maybe it's just JRPGs in general, but this game killed me.  I spent longer on this game than I did on Pokemon Sapphire when I was 6 and got stuck in Victory Road for hours.  I even got so desperate that I bought SP drinks with micro transactions, then promptly beat the game without them to just prove the point that once I spend money on something I think I need I come to find out that I really didn't need it.  I really don't hate this game, to be honest.  Really, this is one of the best games I ever played.  But it wasn't easy like Pokemon, so it made me cry (note:  Bravely Default did not actually make me cry).
Graphics - 10.  This game is fantastic graphically.  I know that the characters don't look too terribly realistic at all, but that doesn't mean the graphics are bad.  It just means that the game was meant to be that way.  All of the graphics in the game a extremely good.  The battle animations are pretty fantastic, the character sprites both in game and in small cinematic sequences are great, and the detail in the game is just fantastic.  I wouldn't have done anything different with the graphics in the game because they fit it just perfectly.
Sound - 10.  Bonus points for using an orchestra, or orchestral sounds, like most games do now.  I really like classical instruments, and while they don't always play classical pieces, I think that they make the game sound BETTER than stuff like popular music.  However, with this game I find myself in LOVE with the music, especially the special move music for the characters, mainly Edea.  I like how the music for those crea... Fire Emblem: Awakening

Fire Emblem Awakening - A Review!
I'm not going to pretend I've played the Fire Emblem series forever.  As a matter of fact, this was my first game in the series.  Seriously.  The only time I've played a different FE title is when I pulled one up on vizzed and played it for a little while.  However, that doesn't mean I don't know anything about how to play Fire Emblem.  From my experience, it isn't too much of a grind heavy game at least in the easier difficulties, but is more of a "don't do stupid things with your characters" game.  Does this mean that you somehow have to use logic in the game????
Graphics - 7.  I'll be completely honest, I like how this game is presented.  I like how fluid the cut scenes are and how the pictures look like actual pictures.  However, whenever you have a smaller top down view of the game, the graphics won't be as good.  Small sprites are never going to be perfect, and that's a flaw with many games, which is why few games have fantastic graphics.  However, if this game's graphics were graded solely based on how well the cinematic scenes played out, the game would receive stellar marks.  During my first couple plays of the game I would refuse to skip the cut scenes.  Overall, this game would benefit from slightly better graphics during actual game play, but the graphics elsewhere are nothing short of phenomenal.
Sound - 7.  I'm all for great soundtracks.  I really like how the soundtrack for FE plays out.  First off, it isn't all in your face with the music.  It's quite nice sometimes when you're playing and just hear the music and get into it.  However, Sound doesn't solely encompass the soundtrack of the game.  It also encompasses the smaller sounds in the games.  A gripe I have with the sound is the voice acting, or really, lack thereof.  You rarely get to hear a full strung out sentence except in cinematic cut scene... Backyard Football

Backyard Football Review
Usually, I am a fan of the Backyard Sports series, but this game caused me to rethink my stance on being the biggest fan of the series.  Backyard Football is a game where you can play as kids or pros (as kids) and go through a season, play a regular game, or do a variety of other game modes offered in the game.  The rules are the same as football except that there is a default 1 minute quarter length- which leads to a very short game play- and you can also have "power ups" in the game that can enhance your teams performance (personally, I think it is better to call it "Cheating someone out of a touchdown with a magnet").

Graphics 6:  The graphics in this game are garbage.  They are absolutely terrible.  But, you have to remember that this was a game on the GBA system- which, in my opinion, is one of the worst systems for graphics- and that it won't have the best graphics you'll ever see.  If you look at the on the field graphics in the game Backyard Football 2007, you'll see that Backyard Football is easier to look at, despite being all cartoony.  Considering that this came out pretty early (2004-2005 I believe), you can't fault them for having terrible graphics.

Sound 5:  The sounds are nice for a while, and then you notice that they are too repetitive and turn the sound off.  It isn't like how Backyard Baseball uses some of the sounds from Hotel R'Wanda (or vice versa), however, so it isn't all too bad.  The only thing I can say I like is the music at the beginning of the game where the main menu is, but I've always liked a little menu ambiance anyways.

Addictiveness 3:  Since the games are just about 4 minutes long, it is hard to get in to a game so much that you'll stay with it for a while.  This makes the game extremely nonaddictive, and I sometimes find myself quitting after just one game because I feel that it is too boring to play.  The game fails t... Repulse: MAME Game Review
MAME games are a recent addition to the Retro Game Room, so what better game to review than one that I have never played before!  Repulse is a game that sounds like it is absolutely repulsive, but I found that the game is absolutely amazing, even though it seems VERY similar to Galaga.  The game takes place in 1999 AD, which should be a hint to you that this game was made before the date because of how everything is pictured ( I mean, come on, I'm pretty sure we don't have an intergalactic war going on at the moment).  You have to fight an onslaught of enemy space ships, and each type of ship has a different attacking style.

Graphics 8:  The graphics of this game aren't extremely good, but there are some parts of the graphics that are extremely good.  For example, when you look at the various ships (including your own), you may be able to notice that they are very well designed.  I like how they are pleasing to the eye as well.

Sound 8:  The only thing that really knocks the sound down is the repetitiveness of the guns firing.  Other than that, though, I like how the sound is.  The ships each have their own sounds, and at the beginning of the game, the song is absolutely amazing.  I really like how they put that in to the game.

Addictiveness 10:  When I first played the game, I though I would only play it for a few hours, and then put it down and bury it.  But, I came to find out that I lost more than a few hours in the game because of how good it was.  I find it awesome that you can attempt to beat your high score and that the game is actually fun to play because you don't have to do the exact same thing every time.  You can either dodge all game, attack the whole game, or do a combination of both in some ways.  You'll be surprised at how many hours you lose in this game when (or if) you play it.
