Repulse Review by: mlb789 - 8.4/10
Repulse: MAME Game Review MAME games are a recent addition to the Retro Game Room, so what better game to review than one that I have never played before! Repulse is a game that sounds like it is absolutely repulsive, but I found that the game is absolutely amazing, even though it seems VERY similar to Galaga. The game takes place in 1999 AD, which should be a hint to you that this game was made before the date because of how everything is pictured ( I mean, come on, I'm pretty sure we don't have an intergalactic war going on at the moment). You have to fight an onslaught of enemy space ships, and each type of ship has a different attacking style.
Graphics 8: The graphics of this game aren't extremely good, but there are some parts of the graphics that are extremely good. For example, when you look at the various ships (including your own), you may be able to notice that they are very well designed. I like how they are pleasing to the eye as well.
Sound 8: The only thing that really knocks the sound down is the repetitiveness of the guns firing. Other than that, though, I like how the sound is. The ships each have their own sounds, and at the beginning of the game, the song is absolutely amazing. I really like how they put that in to the game.
Addictiveness 10: When I first played the game, I though I would only play it for a few hours, and then put it down and bury it. But, I came to find out that I lost more than a few hours in the game because of how good it was. I find it awesome that you can attempt to beat your high score and that the game is actually fun to play because you don't have to do the exact same thing every time. You can either dodge all game, attack the whole game, or do a combination of both in some ways. You'll be surprised at how many hours you lose in this game when (or if) you play it.
Story : There may be chapters and such to the game, but there really is not enough to call it an actual story.
Depth 10: The only reason this game is so deep is because of how you can beat your high score. If there wasn't this, the score may be lower, but the game did take me a while to get far in to (mainly because you have to restart every time you lose).
Difficulty 6: This game is actually pretty difficult when you get to later levels, but the game is a little too easy in the early levels, bringing down the score a little bit. If you just first pick up this game though, you are likely to have more trouble on the first few levels.
Overall 8.4: I really enjoyed playing this game because of how similar it was to Galaga, but it is on a different system and has a new feel to it. I would recommend this game to anyone who has either played Galaga or really wants to start to play arcade games.
