Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania
Hooray the PC version is in the database now I can actually review it

So apparently this is the most well recived Sonic game of all time or something like that? At least that's what I've heard.

I'm going to be honest. I don't think this game is as great as people make it out to be. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game by any means. But I think this series has had higher points before.

Now in terms of gameplay...it's classic Sonic. Literally what else do you want me to say about it?
They did add a new mechanic called the drop dash. This basically allows you start charging a spin dash in the air and you'll release it as soon as you hit the ground. It's a neat little addition imo.
But other than that, this is Genesis/Mega Drive (depending on where you live) style Sonic exactly as most of you remember it.

Graphics: 9 This is probably my favorite part. The art style here actually doesn't look like a Genesis game at all. Instead I think Mania is what a 2D Sonic game on the Dreamcast (or maybe even Saturn?) would look like, and as someone who's always wanted a 2D sonic game on Dreamcast that's really cool.

The animation is also very nice and smooth. I normally dislike this in 2D games, but it worked out quite well here. I guess smooth and fast just kinda mix like that.

Sound: 10 Sonic games always have banger soundtracks, this is most certainly not an exception. It seems like they tried to go for something Sonic CD-ish with maybe a bit of Sonic 4 in there.

I love CD's soundtrack so this is getting an easy 10 from me

Addictiveness: 5 The main game is pretty lengthy for a classic Sonic game (13 zones!!!). Took me about 7-8 hours on my first try. And there's a whole ton of extra stuff to unlock too, which I should probably not spoil.

They even brought back those blue spheres special stages from Sonic 3.
Cool. But why. Why would you do that.... Read the rest of this Review

OK SO I DISCOVERED THIS GAME YESTERDAY AND IT IS THE ONLY THING I HAVE PLAYED SINCE THEN AND OH MY GOD I NEED MORE PEOPLE TO PLAY THIS IT IS SO GOOD WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

ok i'm done
So this game's probably kind of a weird one to most of you. To sum it up briefly, you slide rows and columns of blocks around (like a rubik's cube basically) and you can erase blocks like every other puzzle game ever by lining them up in a full cross (a whole row up and a whole row across) along the board. There are some special types of blocks as well. Star blocks give more points if cleared, locked blocks can't move off the edge of the screen and warp around, and X blocks can't move, period. A simple concept but it works well.

Graphics: 10 I think this is the main reason most people buy this game. The interface is basically a simplistic futuristic type of thing. It is very clean but so sooooooooooo nice to look at. I NEED MORE GAMES WITH THIS KIND OF ART STYLE

Sound: 8 I actually wasn't really a fan of this game's soundtrack at first but after listening to it more it's starting to grow on me. It's a little difficult to explain but if you've ever played games like Monkey Ball or Tetris Grand Master it's pretty similar to those. Not really sure what you'd call this type of music

Addictiveness: 9 Read the first paragraph. This game kept me playing FOREVER, and that's an impressive feat. There's also a few different modes (it even has multiplayer!), and of course there's extra content to unlock on top of that too. Nothing big, mostly just extra skins, music, and backgrounds. But there's still quite a bit.

Story: N/A No story. There was one planned, but it got scrapped before the release. sadness

Depth: 6 In terms of depth, there isn't a whole lot to talk about. I've already said the gameplay here is fairly simplistic...

...that is, assuming you're playing solo. Read the rest of this Review
Sonic Adventure DX

Sonic Adventure DX
I am bored and I feel like reviewing something so I am going to review something
and that something might as well be one of my most favorite single player games ever

Now, before I say anything else PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLAY THIS ON CONSOLE IF YOU CAN THE PC PORT IS A DUMPSTER FIRE

The PC version is totally playable but has some serious issues compared to the console versions that just make it painful to play. The only reason I am reviewing the PC version is because this is the version that I 100%ed.

So with that said, I honestly don't know what to say about the game itself. It's a Sonic game. The usual "get from point A to point B" formula, just now in three whole dimensions for some reason. And it's done pretty dang well if I do say so myself.

Graphics: 5 DX is supposed to be the definitive version of this game, so it only makes sense that would try to remaster the graphics. Big emphasis on the word "try". Because, uh, to say it bluntly...this kinda sucks. DX's graphics are just plain. There isn't really any personality. If you've only ever played DX (as was the case with me for most of my life, in fact I only started playing the original SA last month) you've probably been able to tolerate it. But once you play the original Dreamcast version I promise you you'll never ever EVER want to look at DX again.

Sound: 10 Soundtracks are one of the things that the Sonic games almost never get wrong, and Adventure is obviously no exception. This game has got a whole mixture of music, rock, jazz, etc etc etc. It just tries to go for whatever fits the mood and it does a really freaking good job. This is definitely in one of my top 5 video game soundtracks, and that's out of the 98389578236983 (number probably not accurate) ones that I've listened to.

Addictiveness: 7 I've beaten this game god knows how many times now. Adventure clearly isn't designed to be addicting... Read the rest of this Review
Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche

Avalanche 2: Super Avalanche
I finally 100%'ed this game so I guess it's about time I review it then...

So this is Super Avalanche. This is supposed to be a sequel (I personally see it as more of a remaster) to a flash game called Avalanche. Avalanche was a pretty simple platformer where blocks fall from the sky, and you're supposed to climb as high as you can without getting crushed by them or falling into the lava rising below you.

Super Avalanche is basically the same thing but with TONS of new stuff thrown into the mix. Now we've got boss fights, items, missions, and most important of all, you can customize your little marshmallow dude BECAUSE WHY NOT???

anyways LET'S REVIEW STUFF YAY

Graphics: 8 That's some pretty nice pixel art going on there actually. The backgrounds in particular are pretty nice, and the colorful style in general is also alright.

Sound: 6 It's just fine. I like the soundtrack here but it's not anything all that unique. Not much to say about it.

Addictiveness: 3 There's not a whole here, honestly. Once you reach 2000 feet or so, that's pretty much it. You've seen everything. There's also lots of things to buy from the shop, and they usually have to be unlocked in some way before you can buy them, but I imagine people probably won't care about this all too much.

Story: N/A There is a story here but it's extremely simple. Wizard guy steals staff. Now you have to chase him. Yeah, that's it. I won't bother rating this

Depth: 5 The core gameplay itself it really simple. Run. Jump. Wall jump. Basic stuff. Most of the depth comes from the different items you can find as you climb. They do all sorts of things. There's a cape that lets you boost. A jetpack which is pretty self-explanatory. Goggles that let you detect incoming blocks. And a lot more, too many to list here. At first you can only hold one item at a time, but you can collect these red squares (no... Read the rest of this Review
Sonic Drift GG

Sonic Drift
SO......it's my first time writing a review on here. And I have no idea how this works. Let's hope this ends well.

So this is Sonic Drift. Basically Sega's first attempt (to my knowledge) at making a Sonic Kart.
(edit: I have discovered it was actually Arc System Works who made this game. Yes, the guys who made BlazBlue made a sonic racing game. So that's something.)

The game itself is pretty straightforward. You have an accel button, you have a brake button. You can hold both at the same when turning to drift, but if you drift too long you spin out. You can pick up rings on the track, and characters have a special move that you can press up on the d-pad to use for the cost of 2 rings. And as with pretty much any kart racer there's items you can grab on the track (although this game only has two kinds, speed boost and invincibility)
And that's about it.

so now it's time to actually review things yay!!!

Graphics: 6 I was going to give this a 5 at first, but I bumped it up once I realized I've never actually seen this sort-of 3D effect on the Game Gear before. There are probably other games that use it but it's new to me. Probably nothing special in general but still cool by Game Gear standards.

Sound: 5 I can't say it's bad by any means, but I personally don't really like it. Most of the songs aren't all that much (except Scrap Brain's theme, that one slaps). Sonic Drift 2 did far better here.

Addictiveness: 5 I actually stuck with this game quite a bit, surprisingly. The game does only have 6 tracks, but they all have 3 different variants, bringing the total up to 18. You can get through the grand prixs pretty quickly (the AI isn't very good), but trying to get better in the time attack mode was fun.

Story: N/A I'm pretty sure there isn't one

Depth: 4 There isn't a whole lot to it really. I explained how the game works at the beginning... Read the rest of this Review
