I guess it's a good fighter. For a pirate that is.
In all my life of playing pirates, I have never came across that much fighting games that are hacks, But this is just my luck! I was looking through NES pirates and i found this cool little gem right here! This is a fighting game, well of course what else? And it features a bunch of characters from the Mario universe! What is this game you ask? Well this is kart fighter for the NES, why the game is called KART fighter is a mystery beyond me, but let's get this thing on shall we?
Since this is a pirate game, I am not going to say there is a story, but oh yeah! Let's make up our own fun and silly one! Mario and friends are hosting a fighting tournament through around the world, and you're invited! Pick one of many characters from the mario universe and let's rumble! We'll be traveling through the desert, bowser's castle, and a whole lot of others! Come on down everyone!
As the title suggests, this game is a fighting game, and it is actually quite a fun one at that! When starting the game, you will be able to pick 2 different game modes, Arcade and free play, In arcade mode you pick out a character and adventure through a story like quest which really plays out like smash bros' classic mode, and in free play mode you can pick any character and stage and well, beat up your opponent! The controls are pretty simple, you press the D-pad to move and jump in the air, and you press the A and B buttons to punch and kick. The game features a bunch of characters from the mario universe, including Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Koopa, and a bunch of others! The game borrows quite alot from other fighting game like Street fighter Killer instinct and mortal kombat in that aspect, Pressing buttons in certain combos can let you do a super move which you do more damage to your opponent then expected! I actually like this game so far! I mean it is one of the first pirated fighting games I have seen, and that is a plus! Anyways, that is all for the gameplay I guess.
For a fighting game, these graphics aren't too bad to be honest! I mean, they are nice big and colorful, you got to give them that, and most of the characters you will be controlling actually look like their actual selves! I mean, in most pirate games, the developers just grab a bunch of random backgrounds and character sprites from other stuff and call it a day, but the developers here will completely original! But anyways, the graphics in this game look like mario, which is a plus, and all the worlds and arenas are ripped from mario kart! Ohh...so that is why the game is called kart fighter, Like I said, the sprites are really good looking! Mario is red, Luigi and yoshi and green, Peach is pink ,and so on. The HUD is pretty self explanatory, It displays how much health you have left until you die, How many wins you have recieved in the current match, and your score for the game, As you punch and kick your enemies to death, your score will increase, try to get a high score! Anyways, that is it for the graphics!
The sound in this game is pretty self explanatory, I mean you get some catchy tunes here and there, But most of them really make you feel like you are in the mario universe, which is a plus in this case. Oh yeah, another thing, the MUSIC and SOUND EFFECTS in this game are completely original! No stolen stuff from other games, nice job developers! The sound effects are there, but for the most part you just get pows booms blams and a bunch of other stuff you would come to expect from an 8-bit game like this. I found the soundtrack in this game actually pretty catchy and not repeititive at all!
This game caught and kept my attention held for the whole ride through, and hear are a couple reasons why, The game has that charm that most fighting games have, which will help you understand that this a fighting game, and not just a random game where you completly forget what game this is and what you're doing. Another thing is the fighting system! Pulling off combos is not a problem at all in this game! If you are really good that is though. If you can press the right buttons in the right order, then get ready to pull off some wicked amount of damage to your opponent!
The game offers quite alot of stuff to do! As I have adressed before, the game offers 2 distinct modes to it, Arcade and free play, And these 2 modes actualy feel like alot to me! It is really fun playing free play mode because there are no rules, pick your character and stage, beat the snot out of your opponent, and so on. The arcade mode is a good 6-8 stages, so that will most likely take you about 15 or so minutes to get through.
In my opinion, this game shouldn't give you too much of a hard time! I mean, like all other fighters, the game doesn't offer the option to let you adjust the difficulty settings between easy medium and hard, but it is no biggie. The game is pretty easy anyways, never once has the game given me the cold shoulder! The game is really easy to pick up and play, which is a huge plus. I like games that are easy to pick up and play!
This one wasn't all the bad, but it could've been alot worse. It was still a really fun game and It kept my attention the whole ride through, when does a game like this never? I gave this game a 7.7 because it is nice and easy to pick up and play, and it if fun! So this has been my 104th review! I'll go on hiatus for a while, but I will still keep making reviews! So stay tuned! Anyways, bye!
