I am Simon Belmont from Castlevania. And I would not survive the apocalypse because as soon as I walk outside the door, a giant Medusa head, flying in their unavoidable patterns they tend to fly in would hit me and knock me into a nearby pit to my death. Which is how I usually die 90% of the time when I play Castlevania haha

The last game I played was Castlevania: Blood Moon, which is a hack/home brew for the NES. I played it last night and I got to the second level before turning it off. Seems like a pretty cool game, but like most of the Castlevania games that are on the NES, it's a very hard game that skates on the edge of frustrating at times. One problem is the usual getting knocked back when hit by enemies business so prevalent in the franchise. The other is that your character seems to slide a little when walking, which sometimes results in a few cheap hits every now and then. Those things are kind of annoying and like I said before makes the game a little bit frustrating. But I still kind of like the game and I think I'll play it again at some point.

rebelyell : I really like this hack as well. it's a lot tougher than the original, so there's a bit more replay value to it for somebody who has played the original thousands of times. Good stuff!

golgo 14 : Fantastic review. I really like the large font size you use. Makes it easier on this poor old geezer's eyes lol.

Now regarding the music: Am I the only one who secretly wishes a metal band would cover this in one way or another? I mean, I've heard metal versions of some really iconic NES music like the Super Mario Bros. theme, and it came out great. So imagine how the music for this game would sound with real life distorted guitars, drums, bass and keyboard. I think it would sound epic!

endings : Excellent review! I really liked on how you pointed out the good and bad of  each part of the game, such as graphics, sound, etc. It reminds me of what the writers at the old Game Players magazine used to do in their game reviews. It was something that was greatly appreciated at the time by myself, and it's still appreciated when somebody does it now. Great job.

This is a decent port of the arcade classic, but the one thing I really don't like about this version of the game is that the mazes scroll as you travel up and down the screen. It leads to a lot of cheap deaths as you run your character up and down the mazes because often times you run into a ghost that is just out of your view until it's too late. Really wished they kept the mazes stationary just like in the arcade and earlier home versions.

bluecat2012 : Good job on the review. I also really like this game. I think that had this game came out back when I was a kid, I'd probably would have played it to death. It's really simple and easy to get into.

gamerforlifeforever2 : Yes, the game is pretty bad. But is it the worst game ever? I have to respectfully disagree on that one. I think that the Action 52 compilation for the NES is way worse than E.T. That thing is just loaded with games with bad design, bad graphics, and horrid game play. And that's the games that actually work. There's a good few on the cart that just crash out after the title screen or just start glitching out like the NES is having a seizure. I pity the poor people who paid 200 bucks for that turkey back in the day. They must be kicking themselves pretty hard right now.

On a side note, I bought my copy of E.T brand new from the electronics department at Zellers for $1.99. Not a bad price to pay for a mediocre at best game, don't you think?

rebelyell : But this is what happens when a game company tries to rush a game out in time for the holiday season. I heard that the total time taken to develop and design this game from start to finish was five weeks. That's no time at all really, considering a lot of the newer games take months and sometimes years to complete.

Dark sword Z : I like this game too. In fact, I think it's rather impressive that the people who designed it managed to squeeze so much game into such a primitive console. It's definitely right on par with some of the classic 2600 games. Especially the games designed by Activision. It kind of looks like an Activision game. All it needs is the logo at the bottom of the screen.

The only fault I find with the game, however, is that it dosen't keep score. Now that may not be a big deal for some folks, but for gamers of a certain generation (like me), setting a high score and then trying to beat said score was a major reason to keep on playing. It dosen't really kill the replay value, but keeping score would have been a nice feature to have

PacmanandMariofan : I also dig the Vector based graphics of the arcade game. It's the stark minimalists style that really adds to the game's atmosphere of impending doom. It looks like something out of an astronauts nightmare

.
Having said that, I'd still sometimes prefer the Atari 2600 version because of the different play modes and the adjustable difficulty settings. These add a ton of extra replay value to an already very addictive game. It was also one of the first games I ever owned/played for the Atari 2600, so it also has a lot of sentimental value to it. I think I got it for Christmas one year, not really sure which one. Needless to say, that was a FUN holiday season

Thanks very much for your response. It's always a treat to talk to fellow gamers who are into old school gaming regardless of their age or background. Many cheers and happy gaming.
