I actually own this game and played the crap out of it, it was a lot of fun. It's a bit challenging to raise a monster to max stats before they have to retire (I think it invovles fusing or breeding (Whichever one as it's been so long since I've played it) and training it just right. There's also a way to get a gold monster of each type that's supposed to be more powerful than the norm, which monsters you train depends on your preferences, but I seem to recall that I used pixie and golem type monsters more often.
