What would you suggest that has a balance of adventure -exploration, interaction with NPCs etc - and combat?
I've seen Final Fantasy, Mario and Luigi Superstar, Golden Sun suggested, are any of these worth trying?

I've just finished Minish Cap on GBA. I'm looking for a new game to try, but I'm kind of sick of the old hack and slash format...
Are there any games that are simply adventure games (like the Lucas film or Sierra ones) which aren't about battling?

Definitely helps, although I just started on FF3 here on Vizzed... My style games are somewhere between monkey island/kings quest and the current flood of RPGs (elder scrolls, assassins creed).
Final fantasy seems to be nice, not lovin the old pixelated graphics though

To explain, I have never played Final Fantasy, but I enjoy adventure games in general. That's why I know what "grinding" is. However, every game usually has it's own type of language - the acronyms and code-words to explain different quests and styles of play. to avoid that, I chose to simply ask for no "gamer language" at all...

So, I always read about how Final Fantasy is awesome, amazing etc. etc... I've never played it, but I would love to start. 
Which one is the best, what is the difference between them, and where do you suggest starting from?
Please remember, I am a bit of a noob, so I do need everything spelled out - no gamer language!

This is one I will never forget...

We used to have our lessons around one long table, and being a great student and all, I was always put right next to the teacher. He was a really sweet old man, but a true bore.
Well, when one has a boring teacher, one tends to fall asleep. While one sleeps, occasionally one tends to twitch violently. When one twitches violently, one's hand sometimes slams down on the table, causing him to awaken to stares and laughter....

I still look the other way when passing him on the street.
