Overall 10- Super Metroid is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo. It was initially released on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo) in 1994, but has since then been re-released on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. It is the third game in the Metroid franchise, and the plot picks up where the last game in the series, Metroid II: Return of Samus, left off.Like most games of the series, Super Metroid is an 2D action-adventure game with platforming elements. Players take the role of a female bounty hunter known as Samus Aran as she explores the deadly planet Zebes and collect an arsenal of weapons and gadgets, which will in turn let her progress into areas that were previously inaccessible.Super Metroid was one of the largest and most graphically-impressive games for the console at the time of its release. Even today, the game is considered by many to be one of the greatest games of all time.Super Metroid is also famous for the unintentional ability to "sequence break" the game. This means that although there is roughly a set path for Samus to follow, skilled players are capable of reaching ledges or getting past barriers before they have discovered the power up that is ordinarily required to get there. For example, by mastering a maneuver known as the 'mockball' players can get the super missiles very early in the game, when they enter Brinstar for the first time. This curious mechanic has many people struggling to see who can find the fastest path to take to complete the game, making Super Metroid one of the first games surrounded by the 'speedrun' phenomenon. Graphics 9- Super Metroid looks exactly how a 2D platformer should look like without a 3D engine. Visually it may not blow you away in this day and age, but carefully looking at the detail put into the setting, background, characters, etc, and you’ll see that they put a lot of effort into this game. The graphics in Super Metroid are about as pretty as games were at the time (aside from games accelerated by the “Super FX Chip”), but even with fancy HD-quality sprites or a 3D engine this is still a great looking game. Even compared to the more recent GBA Metroids, this game stands right up there, enduring the test of time. Sound 10- In terms of old school gaming music, Metroid is one of those titles that really defined the genre. The music was simple yet catchy, and it even led to an official soundtrack being released on Nintendo Power. Some of the more memorable tunes were the ‘escape music’ (from the intro clip above), the tune after you load a save file, the ‘ending theme’, and the ‘boss battle’ music (as heard in the clip below). Aside from the music, there are no voice-overs in the game, just scrolling text, like all games at the time, so you’ll have to do some reading. Samus has remained silent for the most part anyways, even in the recent Metroid Prime Trilogy, but Metroid: Other M might change that. Anyways, Super Metroid will show you what game developers were able to produce musically even with their limited technology. Addictiveness 9- Super Metroid‘s gameplay stands atop its genre ever since it was created. There is a few glitches, but aside from that Super Metroid defines 2D side-scrolling adventure/exploration (nicknamed “MetroidVania”, Metroid and Castlevania being the most well-known for its design). What really sets this game apart from your standard old school side-scroller is the exploration aspect of the game. There are a lot of places you can go and explore, and you’ll probably find something new, such as more suit upgrades, or a even a whole new section Newcomers may occasionally get stuck from time to time, and this can get frustrating, so you may need to look up a walkthrough from time to time. Eventually you’ll pick up and breeze through some challenges. Some of the more veteran players can even “sequence break”, getting items earlier than they are supposed to. For example, by wall-jumping, I was able to beat Kraid before getting the Ice Beam, which saved me time on backtracking.Speaking of backtracking, that is another aspect of the game that some might find tedious. As you progress through the game you’ll encounter areas you cannot enter or items you cannot reach without certain upgrades, so from time to time you might want to explore backwards for a bit to see if you can buff up Samus, especially if a certain boss is giving you a hard time. Story 8- Chronologically, Super Metroid takes place seventh in the Metroid universe and immediately after the events of Metroid II: Return of Samus, and begins with a narrative by bounty hunter Samus Aran. Samus describes how a Metroid larva hatched from an egg and immediately imprinted upon her, believing her to be its mother. She brought the larva to Ceres Space Colony, where scientists learned that they could harness its power. Just after she left the colony, she received a distress call and returned to find the scientists dead and the larva stolen. The game begins as she follows the leader of the Space Pirates, Ridley, to the planet Zebes, where she searches for the stolen larva in a network of caves.Along the way, Samus defeats four of the Space Pirate bosses, including Ridley, and arrives in Tourian, the heart of the Space Pirate base. There, she encounters the Metroid larva, which has now grown to an enormous size. It attacks Samus and nearly drains all of her energy before it realizes who she is, and then departs. Samus recharges her energy and confronts Mother Brain, the biomechanical creature that controls the base's systems. Mother Brain nearly kills Samus, but is then attacked by the Metroid larva, which drains it of its energy and transfers it back to Samus. Mother Brain recovers and destroys the Metroid in retaliation, but is in turn destroyed by Samus with an extremely powerful weapon created from the energy given to her by the Metroid. Afterward, a planetwide self-destruct sequence begins, which Samus narrowly escapes. Super Metroid is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo. Overall 9.8- The fourth installment in the Mega Man series was another GREAT game and added new tricks and surprises while keeping the flavor of the first three MM games. This game is probably the "unsung" game in the Mega Man series. Many people talk about how great the games MM2 and MM3 were(which is TRUE) but they overlook what was yet another fantastic addition to the Mega Man series. The cybernetic suitcase, Fliptop makes his first appearance in this game. He meets you in certain stages and gives you an item such as a 1up or an energy tank. Also, Mega Man now has the Mega Buster which charges up when you hold the B button. A BIG plus indeed. Graphics 9- Like its predecessors, Mega Man 4 features EXCELLENT graphics with plenty of color, detail, and animation. Also, the graphics and platforms is Mega Man 4 are BIG which makes Mega Man feel "small" unlike previous MM games. The animation is VERY smooth. The Pharoah Man stage features nice animations with the quicksand and the stars while the Toad Man stage features rain that downpours more as Mega Man progresses. Hey, who said being a hero was easy? All in all, the graphics of Mega Man 4 are as good as or even better than the first three MM games. Sound 9- The soundtrack of here is good with some VERY catchy songs. Dr.Cossack's castle contains two excellent themes that fit the stages perfectly! Every stage has great music in MM4. The feel is there too. The Dive Man stage has a lively beat while the Dust Man stage music is nice and soft. The themes are different than the first three Mega Man games which is cool. EVERY Mega Man game has music unlike the other MM games which is a BIG plus. I mean that no music in MM4 sounds the least bit reminiscent of another MM game. Overall, Mega Man 4 has excellent music. Story 9- This time around, Dr. Wily isn't the man behind the overthrow of the world; or at least, not at the beginning. Now a new scientist named Dr. Cossack has manufactured eight new robots to challenge the blue bomber. After all eight of them are defeated and Dr. Cossack is reached, we find that there was a motive behind all this - Dr. C's daughter was kidnapped by the ubiquitous Dr. Wily, who forced Dr. C to attack. So, once again, it's back to Dr. W's hideout to destroy his machinery - at least, for another year. Surprisingly, the plot works. It isn't the same thing rehashed like the SMB or Castlevania series - this time there are actually characters besides MM, Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. Another big plus goes to including the origin of Mega Man at the beginning of the game. In fact, I'd say that this plot is the best part of this game. Overall 9.8- ToeJam & Earl was a pretty weird game back in its day, and when you remove it from those carefree 16-bit days, it feels even weirder. As two hip-hop-loving aliens, you'll have to avoid evil earthlings like little devils, hula dancers, bees, and evil dentists while trying to find the pieces of your spaceship so you can escape back to your home planet, Funkotron. But in this case, "weird" doesn't mean "bad." This game was "fresh," or perhaps even "def," back when it was released in the early '90s, and while its lingo and attitude are most definitely dated, it's still a lot of fun, especially with two players Sound 9- The effects and music in ToeJam & Earl were pretty cool back in 1991. While that FM synthesizer inside the Genesis was put to effective use on the bass lines and other parts of the music, a lot of the drums and other sounds were digitized, giving the game the sound of an old drum machine. If you want to just drop a beat, there's a jam-out option that plays the music from the game sans drums, so you can hit buttons to play the drum samples yourself. The blend of rap and funk represents some of the most memorable music to ever grace a Genesis cartridge. The beats are elegant and whimsical, providing the perfect tone for all the game’s humor. One could, nevertheless, argue that the sound effects are equally impressive, from the off-key “La-La-LAAH!” of Cupids and the “Halelulya” of getting your life bar refilled to the crunch of eating moldy bread and the burping that ensues when you open a root beer present. Graphics 8- The backgrounds are simple (green grass, black space, blue water, etc.), and the sprites for the characters and Earthlings could definitely be bigger. That said, the characters are rich with animation, and the wacky cast of characters comes to life thanks to the attention to detail. Story 8- The game itself is almost like a dungeon-crawl, in an entirely different-looking environment. The levels are randomly generated (in the main mode, anyway), and you need to scour each level in search of items, including your ship pieces, while being on the lookout for enemies. The items you collect are presents, and at the start of the game, you have no idea what any of the presents do. But when you open a present and discover what's inside, you're guaranteed that all the other presents that look the same have the same contents. The presents can help or hurt, depending on what you get. Tomatoes can be thrown at enemies. A decoy present directs the enemies to huddle around your decoy, letting you skittle away to safety. Rocket skates give you a nearly uncontrollable boost of speed that is usually a real nuisance. There are a good number of different presents in the game, and figuring out what they all do is a key part of the game. Overall 10- If there was any series that people had really big expectations for after the release of the Super Nintendo, it was The Legend of Zelda. Super Mario World was the largest Mario game to date with much upgraded visuals. Unlike Mario, which was a linear experience, the open-world nature of Zelda had people salivating at the potential experiences that could happen. Nintendo did not disappoint and with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, offered one of the best action-RPG experiences on the system. A Link to the Past is a game the defies normal convention. Those who hate RPG games can still enjoy it because it isn’t of the you-hit-me-then-I-hit-you variety. The action is intense. It also spits in the eye of Nintendo games being cute, cuddly, and adorable to the point of inducing vomiting. This Zelda game can have some downright ugly creatures. The story is fantastic and more engaging than some Hollywood films. The game is near-perfect. Graphics 9- The graphics look really good. In fact, outside some of the later games on the system like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World: Yoshi’s Island, this is one of the best looking games on the system. The world of Hyrule looks gorgeous with everything looking as detailed as possible (or at least as much as possible for a 16-bit console). Even the little things have incredible detail like shadows in the Lost Forest and the moving eyes on the enchanted trees. It makes it feel like Hyrule is a living, breathing world. Sound 9- The sound is also amazing. The classic Zelda tune sounds incredible. At times, it’s easy to forget that it’s a bunch of midi sounds coming from the grey box and not a full symphony. Most of the music of this game is timeless. There are a couple of sound effects that feel like there wasn’t much effort put in towards their development; like the sound of a soldier that has been alerted by Link’s presence. Some of the effects sound dull and unimaginative. However, for the most part, the sound of the game is very pleasing to the ears and does an outstanding job complimenting the game play and the graphics making which makes for one engaging experience. Story 10- The game stars Link, although not the same one from the NES games. Link is awoken one night by the voice of Princess Zelda begging for help. Link runs to Hyrule Castle to save the Zelda which has been taken over by the evil wizard Agahnim. After sneaking Zelda away to a sanctuary, Link is asked by Zelda to find three mythical pendants so that he can wield the legendary Master Sword to fight the evil wizard. After travelling through Hyrule and obtaining the three pendants, Link gains possession of the Master Sword and goes after Agahnim. At this time, Zelda has been kidnapped again and as Link enters Agahnim’s chamber, Agahnim teleports Zelda to the Dark World; which is a parallel world to Hyrule. Link battles Agahnim in a showdown on top of Hyrule Castle. After Agahnim’s defeat, Link is transported to the Dark World. Ganon is an evil thief that had gained control of the Triforce many moons ago. The Triforce is an extremely powerful artifact that grants the wishes of those who possess it. Ganon’s evil heart has transformed the once Golden Land into the demented Dark World. The wise men of Hyrule were able to trap Ganon in the Dark World and protect Hyrule from his evil. However, now that Agahnim has captured and sent the seven maiden descendant's of the wise men (Zelda being the final one) to the Dark World, the seal has been broken. It is up to Link to find the seven crystals that act as the prison for the maidens to be able to face-off against Ganon, defeat him once and for all, and gain control of the Triforce to restore things back to normal. It is up to Link to find the seven crystals that act as the prison for the maidens to be able to face-off against Ganon, defeat him once and for all, and gain control of the Triforce to restore things back to normal. |

Over All 9.9- What a game I remember playing this game when I was little when the N64 first came out. This game is what made me really get into the Zelda world Graphics 9.0- Being the first 3D Zelda game, a new engine was used for both this game and eventually Major's Mask.Because this engine is based on polygonal graphics, they would require a significant amount of memory in the cartridge, and generating the graphics with simultaneity and consistency would imply the sacrifice of other aspects, such as music or textures. To solve this difficulty, some techniques were used so that the game wouldn't have any problems in this regard: When Link is facing to the right, the game only loads the memory of what is in that direction, be it enemies, characters or simply the space of the territory placed there. This means that there is literally nothing currently loaded on the sides not being witnessed by the camera angle. Sound 10- Despite being a 3D game, there is almost no voice acting from the characters, with some slight exceptions (Nevi says some words, mostly when she's calling Link); a few characters scream, such as Ganondorf and Sheik, or laugh, such as Sari and Malone.Like most Zelda games, Ocarina of Time has its music composed by Koji Kind.Surprisingly, the main theme of the Zelda series is absent in this game, as the overworld tune for this game is new. The game also uses interactive music: Normally, a background theme correspondent to where Link is can be heard; when an enemy is close to him, however, a particular combat theme can be heard, and won't stop until the enemy is defeated. In a similar way, the aforementioned overworld theme changes (not only in presence of an enemy, but also when Link is standing on a place). Koji Kind composed the Ocarina melodies with only five tones of the first three musical notes. Story 10- Ocarina of Time is the first title in the series to show Hyrule in three dimensions. The sacred land is a vast region that portrays various different ecosystems, which are populated by Hylians and other races. Hyrule Field is the central territory, and is connected to the other areas. It also surrounds Lon Ranch, where milk is produced and numerous animals are raised. Located at east from the field is Kokiri Forest, where Link lives (and where the game begins) along with the Kokiri race (who inhabits the place and, as long as they do so, they won't grow up),and it's governed by the Great Deku Tree until his death. Found north of the field is Hyrule Castle Town, where most of the Hylians live, and where Princess Zelda is raised until her turn comes to lead Hyrule. It's also where the Temple of Time was built to house the legendary Master Sword.East from Hyrule Castle Town is Kakariko Village, a place formerly inhabited by the Sheikah tribe until Impa made it public for people to live in there, and where the Graveyard houses the remains of the deceased Royal Family members. Kakariko Village itself is the starting point to reach Death Mountain, the rocky home for the proud Goron race, as well as the fierce Dodongo population, and where an active volcano can be accessed. Northeast from Hyrule Field is Zora's Domain, a crystaline river and fountain inhabited by the Zoras and governed by the King Zora until Princess Ruto takes the throne to accept her royal duty. Lake Hylia in particular, found south from the field, is not ruled by any race, but the Zoras did build a temple in there. Finally, Gerudo Desert is located west from the field, and consists of a valley, a fortress, a desert, and the surroundings of a temple; it is inhabited by the Gerudo tribe, and is considered to be a ground isolated from the rest of Hyrule.Initially, most of these areas are relatively safe from evil, and the few exceptions (Kokiri Forest, for example) have problems too specific to cause any major impact on its inhabitants, mostly having to do with the search of the Spiritual Stones. Seven years later, however, every single part of Hyrule is affected greatly by Ganondorf's evil influence, so Link must visit the sacred temples so that the sages can be awakened and the curses can be undone, one by one.
