Super Mario Dark World part 3 Easy Op Explain to me exactly how this is easy with four seconds to try and figure out what's even going on on the first level. About the only thing "easier" is the controls seem to respond a little better.
Pokemon Crystal All (hack) >Go to play a gen 2 hack to get inspiration for my own hack. >Still the same durps where no pokeballs till second town over, annoying mechanics, etc. >Trainers are way more powerful, and you're expecting to get carpel tunnel syndrome from level grin
Sonic 2 - Robotnik\'s Revenge Makes me realize why I hated sonic so much as a child. "Let me go through the trouble of collecting all these rings so I can just throw them all off screen in one hit and maybe grab one back hhhuuurrr"
Super Metroid - Boss Rush Mode First stage and I'm already sick of this game. Platforms are terrible. I was hoping with boss rush it'd just be a beat'em up. Having to time jumps just right isn't a game, it's a competition. I'm trying to blast aliens for fun, not be in the Olympics
Pokemon Snakewood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQsriCGbbYw I made a video review. It isn't positive.
Pokemon Snakewood This game's designer must have a small penis. Quarterback pokemon with stats ridiculously out of the league of a level 25 pokemon, and then throw one that can only be damaged by things super effective too. That's f***ing insane. Even by gamefreak standards

Most counter-intuitive Final Fantasy you will ever play.
Playing more modern JRPGS such as Blue Dragon, I wanted to see some of the more classic models. I went in knowing FF2 was one of the more unpopular installments. Though I thought this was through it being so "different" from the normal formula, not the broken game mechanics. While there is many exploits as far as how to cheat the leveling system, etc. I don't really want to get into that as I want to talk about how well the game holds up on it's own. Putting yourself in the position of someone who knows nothing about the game, or maybe even about Final Fantasy.

Graphics: 8.
For an 8-bit the graphics are pretty impressive. This is what drew me into wanting to play FF2. There are many old jrpgs, but I really liked the vibrant colors and unique styles of every monster. Every monster does feel different, and the graphic designers truly got the most out of the 8-bit capabilities.

Sound: 7.
Sound is another good one. The music is noteworthy even in random encounters where you'll get bored of it quickly. While the sound is both well done and clear, most of it is taken directly from it's predecessor.

Addictiveness: 1.
This is where we start to see why no Final Fantasy fan likes to speak of FF2. I knew going in there was a stat system over a class system, I also knew going in that it was poorly done when it ends up being a class system anyway when excess strength or power reduces intelligence so you can't go around doing mage things and fighter things at the same time.

That foreknowledge could not prepare me for even MORE contradictory, ridiculously unexplained hardships that lied ahead. For example, something as simple as learning a spell made me have to break the mold I use to judge a good game and look up online how to "learn" a spell. I still don't know. If it's what I think it is and a spellbook is a one time use tome, than why even have magic in the game? The first magic shop you see has overpriced ... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Battle Factory

Pokemon Stadium For The Gameboy.
An oddly fabricated hack considering nothing as far as sound effects, graphics, or game mechanics (including many broken moves... fire spin comes to mind) goes. So rather than rate those, we'll get right into addictiveness, story, depth, and difficulty.

Addictiveness: 4.
The hack tries to give an arcade style feel to pokemon, where a random selection of six "starter" pokemon are at your disposal, among them you choose three, than go on to battle random trainers you would have normally met in the game. (Like fishers, bug catchers, super nerds, etc.) This PvP style gameplay between player and A.I. is probably what a lot of people have been looking for in a pokemon game. Being able to just stat for stat, battle without differing level conditions. And the point is to accumulate as many "wins" as possible to show off with like a highscore.

Depth: 3.
As described in addictiveness, you pick three, than when you defeat an enemy you may switch out one of said three for one of their pokemon. This random fantasy football sort of play style might seem like great fun at first, but you'll quickly find your team build is either grotesquely inefficient, or all powerful. Either way it will bore you unless your interest is specifically in high scores.

Difficulty: 4.
Depending on your build, you could either lose the first round, or never lose. The thing is though it's all so random which does not work well in turn based combat and rock, paper, scissor formats like pokemon. Another cruelty factor is once you lose a battle, you must start from the bottom at zero and earn your way back up to beat your old high score. (Though I suppose you could just save in between battles and than reset if you lose.)

But dirty tricks like auto-saves won't do you any good if the dice gods just aren't in the mood that day. And even if you get an elite team, considering how pokemon battles tend to go with 1001 variables involving status ailments, bindin... Read the rest of this Review
Wario Land - Super Mario Land 3
12-14-13 08:33 PM
Forget what you knew about Mario.
Wario Land is nothing like Mario anything Mario had at the time, nor would ever have even to present day. There is some good to this, but a lot more bad... And all will be discussed within the ratings of each category.

Graphics: 9.
For the original Gameboy, the graphics were good. It may not be vivid and detailed, but each enemy is unique, you can clearly see platforms, etc. It's such a shame the controls are so sluggish and unresponsive (in a PLATFORMER of all gaming types...) that you can't be bothered to actually take advantage of the fact you can see your surroundings and react accordingly.

Sound: 7.
Unique, fitting, but repetitive. The music does justice on the feel of the game being a zany, anti-hero escapade. And I don't think there'd be a very good way to prepare you via music for the brutality that lies ahead. Bringing us too...

Addictiveness: 6.
Oh sure, a part of you wants to continue playing. Especially when you know there is an alternate ending if you have enough coins. Wario Land is just simple and inviting enough to keep you playing, without actually offering you anything. You want to talk about greed? It ain't Wario who is greedy, he's just a byproduct of his environment. The game is completely unforgiving. One wrong move, and you're a little midget with a mohawk regardless of your power ups. I honestly don't know what the hearts are for if 1Ups can be accumulated separately, my guess is it's a slower way. It sure isn't for health in-game. And many of times (because of the bad controls as I said) you'll find yourself spiraling right into a downgraded power-up you did not ask for. With walls, enemies, bad control schemes, and absolutely no sort of clue where you're supposed to go next, the game hardly qualifies as addictive which I take to mean "fun". By the second level you are expected to just figure out where the plus sign giant coin is so you can escape this nightmarish scenery with phantom platforms, guys wh... Read the rest of this Review
Bomberman Quest
11-26-13 09:30 PM
It's like someone went behind a good game and put in reasons to hate it.
This game had potential, but the goblin of hindsight and I don't know... a hatred of hobbyists everywhere from deep seated abuse or something, turned a good game into an infuriating roller coaster in a matter of minutes. Bomberman is unique from other iconic old timey games. It's overhead like Zelda typically, maze like like Metroid, and externally power based with power-ups like Mario. Bomberman is about strategy and patience more then speed runs or offenssive blitzkreigs. Trying to hurry in Bomberman is a good way to blow yourself up.

Graphics: 2.
The sprites themselves are normal Gameboy attire, but the color patterns are so weak, and the implementation of attacks so artificial, it looks like someone did this in paint overnight. Maybe they did. Some might say to give it leeway for probably being released during the early stages of Gameboy color, but even the first Bomberman had the bombs feel more natural in their environment. This puts a big ugly square white block over the bomb, or something similar like you're literally just putting other images over it in a paint edit.

Sound: 4.
Not the worst I've ever heard, but certainly not the best. Loud, high pitch shrills, signifying it's intended for kids, (Why are "kids games" always the most God awfully difficult and aggravating?) it's a big leap from where Bomberman was in his arcade days. Where he used to be in league with Dig-Dug and Spelunker as an adventurer type character, he was now basically becoming Kirby with weapons instead of powers.

Addictiveness: 3.
The problem is death. Death is to be expected in all games, but no one tells you that the first thing that's going to happen when you die is you're going to revert to a previous save point. So make sure to save often. We have the convenience of Vizzed's auto-save system using f2 and f4 respectively, but back then we wouldn't be so lucky. The only save point in sight is at the beginning of the game. So you know what that... Read the rest of this Review
Mario Jump
11-14-13 05:28 PM
A sidegrade to the original.
The original NES Super Mario Bros lives in most older gamers hearts as one of their first gaming experiences. Back then games were challenging and pretty much needed cheat codes if you were not a hardcore player or just wanted to mess around.

This game isn't bad, but a common mistake would be coming into it thinking the high jump is a built-in cheat, when in fact it's just an alteration to the meta-game. A big alteration, with a lot of smaller ones hidden underneath.

Graphics: 7.
Graphics are actually improved in my opinion. A brighter tone, and Mario's old blue and black suspenders like in the Atari Mario Bros.

Sound: 2.
The sound is strictly worse. Original NES Super Mario Bros had some fantastic sound, and this has butchered it was fast forward screeches.

Story: 1.
It's Mario. No story to speak of, but even less so as there's no real fluff for the high jump. Would have been kind of cool had it been incorporated as a permanent power-up Mario found.

Depth: 7.
While technically no stages have been altered or extended, the high jump does make it a lot easier to seek out warp zones.

Difficulty: 6.
About what I'd list the original Super Mario Bros. While you may be able to just swoop right through levels and all the difficult platforms, it could be a slow and painful time based death when you realize you can't complete it because you went up the blocks of Bowser's castle and now are breaking the fourth wall of walking among the timer and high score tables whilst Bowser is attacking air and you can't go back. I have not attempted to see if this effects the flags as well that if you go over them, then come down, you can't pull the flag down.

I do know many glitches previously existed in the game that I did not experience. No freezes, just gimped combat. The fact is high jump does make goomba stomping a bit more sloppy and prone to killing you. You won't be gathering as many coins, 1Ups, o... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Orb
05-02-13 03:30 AM
One of the better pokemon hacks out there.
I'm not going to go easy on this hacker, but he obviously did put a lot of work into it, and it shows. But there is some blatant problems that need to be pointed out. If you're going into Pokemon Orb just expecting Gold or Silver with more pokemon and a bit of differences trainer wise... think again. This is an entirely different pokemon game then any you have played before. The only similarity is the sprites, and even that has been severely altered. (Though not always for the better.)

GRAPHICS: 6.
It needs to be said. The graphics are a huge downgrade to the original. The maps are torn apart messes of rocks and random tiles. It's hard to really figure out where to walk, let alone progress. Many of the berry trees glitch up, some people walk right into buildings, it's severely clunky. Ironically though... all the homebrew pokemon sprites are extremely well done. They're accurate to their third and fourth generation portrayal. So despite the maps design flaws, the advantage goes to the well incorporated pokemon design. Six points for Gryffondor.

SOUND: 1.
The sound is a complete downgrade, there's no getting around this. Second generation had by far the best music, and it was completely butchered here. A mismatching of appropriate music to scenery, with a lot of loud screeching and ringing. The walkway in which you normally would chase Farfetched actually just repeats the pokemon battle music. As if you don't hear that enough. On top of that the low HP ring seems to have gotten louder and faster, becoming even more annoying.

ADDICTIVENESS: 8.
With so many pokemon able to catch, new ones to see, and gym leaders/trainers with unexpected combinations... you will not get bored anytime soon. My only gripe is of course, it's still extremely difficult to catch a pokemon, but that is not particularly this hacker's fault, that's always been a fault in pokemon games. As well, while I can see the point to more random encounters to both exp... Read the rest of this Review
Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney 3 (English beta 0.03)
04-30-13 04:00 PM
I take back everything I said about pokemon being the worst g
With the title, you know it's going to be a bad review, but I don't like to just hurl criticisms without good reason, and I certainly do not want the hacker to think this critique has anything to do with him. From what I can tell, this is purely a translation. no alterations, and even if there were alterations, it couldn't really have been that far from the original as to make it that unbearable. In fact, I think the most impressive thing about the entire game was the hacker's translation scripts. And to do that good of a job between computer language AND human language, was very professional and I give him props.

GRAPHICS: 7.
The graphics are not half bad. Though there's very little animation or activity to speak of. Mostly just an interactive book. But the artwork of the characters is unique and vibrant. I'm sure this was done by design. I don't usually like the ironic humor, but this was done with some class inserting Street Fighter looking characters, with all the poses and demeanor, into a completely serious and white collar setting like court hearings.

SOUND: 2.
The sound may not necessarily be the worst, but as repetitive as it will get reading over the same thing multiple times, it will eventually become nothing more then a screech against your ears. Honestly it got to the point where I just took my ear piece off and read it, rather then having to hear the same sounds over and over again.

ADDICTIVENESS: 1.
Now we're getting into the details, and I have a lot to say because this is actually my first real experience with Phoenix Wright, and I've wanted to play this game for a long time being interested in becoming an attorney myself. I have to say that while the game is some ways gets the feel of being a lawyer down packed, it spirals out of control into a game of bad controls, horrific dialogue, and unsatisfying gameplay.

For example, why would I want to even play the next mission, let alone the entire game ove... Read the rest of this Review
Kirby\'s Fun Pak
04-28-13 08:16 PM
A very different platofmer.
While I've had minimal experience with Kirby games, I never sat down to actually play one. And while there are several good things about the game, there's also a lot of bad that may or may not exist in other Kirby games. But deep down, underneath the bad controls, the terrible timing, and weird skill curves... lies a promising game.

GRAPHICS: 6.
Kirby games do not really push the boundaries in graphics department, but they take the mediocre graphics and excel at them. The best way I can describe it is while you won't see a masterpiece, Kirby has always done an excellent job, and certainly in this particular game of making every level, every enemy, and every ability seem unique and distinguishable. Which is a huge plus that so many platform type games overlook.

SOUND: 6.
The sound is a humble melody, almost like elevator music. I won't rate it as entirely bad, because while the music can be somewhat dull, it is not repetitive, it does exhibit originality, and some of the music is actually kind of catchy. However, I have heard better, and it would be nice if the sounds better reflected what the player was doing or fighting. That's where it falls short, and that's an important element in helping the player subconsciously see and hear the game, allowing a committed reflex response that can ease controls. But then, that's probably the games biggest flaw which I will get into in a second.

ADDICTIVENESS: 4.
The game certainly has a lot to do. There is no doubt about that. Levels to conquer over, mini-games, and a slew of powers to tryout. The problem is Kirby's Fun Pak pushes all the things it isn't good at. While the occasional mini-game by entering a secret room to earn power-ups is certainly welcome, nearly half of the game play revolves around some awkward mini-game such as racing King DeDeDe and seeing who is better at stuffing their face along the way. It's unnecessary and deviates from the core of Kirby's main objective of bei... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Crystal All (hack)
04-18-13 11:11 PM
One good quality does not excuse five bad.
I know I probably have a reputation for giving bad reviews to Pokemon games, but honestly... Gold was my favorite as a child. (I had never played the other two and by then was growing out of Pokemon.) Pokemon was at it's prime, the music was amazing, the graphics were ten times better, the moves were (somewhat...) more balanced, and our little eyes brightened up at the prospect of catching all new pokemon.

To get it out of the way, let's explore why Pokemon Gold was a complete upgrade to it's parenting games.

SOUND:
As said, the sound is really good. Every town has a catchy melody that I could just play by itself. It's a shame it's ruined by the normal buzzing and ringing of normal pokemon sounds for battles and such. But I'm going to rate the sound a ten, as I can't think of many games that actually catch my notice as far as music goes, let alone one from a series I normally rag on.

GRAPHICS:
Graphics made a huge improvement from first generation. Texture is better, the colors are more vibrant, the animated pokemon sprites. If Gamefreak had sought to improve the meta-game the way they did the feel and environment, Pokemon might have been one of the best games out there. But alas... it's more memorable for it's pretty graphics and killer music then it is for game substance. I am however going to rate the graphics as a nine for doing such a 180 from the previous generation.

STORY:
For Pokemon... second generation actually had a decent story. Without much to work with, it managed to actually update the setting a lot. Such as Team Rocket disbanding, but posers trying to keep the legend alive, the three legendary dogs as a backlash to humanity's vain attempt to master over nature, the time-traveling Celibi who was like a pokemon Doctor Who, and then the Unknown. Mysterious pokemon that were like living hieroglyphics. Compared to what you get just a generation later... second gen really gave it Pokemon's all. So I'm going t... Read the rest of this Review
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - Fighting Edition
03-20-13 09:17 PM
Not a bad game, but some visible flaws.
I actually saw this game by watching a youtube video about old 90s commercials, and just watching that twenty second ad did make me want to play this game. Luckily I was not a child anymore, and would not have to waste my precious allowance, or Christmas gift on it. Because while it's good, it's way too short, and half of the game depends on a friend being there beside you to get the full experience.

Graphics: 9.
The commercial even states; "No wonder Rita wants to steal this game... Just look at those graphics!" While we look back upon these commercials and laugh at the camp attitude, it is true. For an early 90s game, this does have some pretty strong graphic tones, textures, and all the fighters look vividly different. You can tell this game was meant for the Genesis which was known for going above and beyond in 16-bit detail. Even the cover art for this game looks amazing.

Sound: 9.
The sound is amazingly good too.  It takes actual power rangers music, along with some generic, but well fitting and relaxed fighting sounds that blend in with the background.

Addictiveness: 3.
I have to admit, I had a lot of fun looking at the different background levels, (it's a shame you don't get to select them) the cut-scenes, and there's always Ivan Ooze to unlock. Admittedly I loved Power Rangers, so have a huge bias in wanting to see all the different characters, their moves, the scenery, etc. So unless you're really into Power Rangers... this game will bore you very quickly. I would compare it to a strictly downgraded version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters.

Story: 1.
The "story mode" iust a means of justifying the fight on a rigorous level. It goes no farther then bad-guys threaten Earth, and the Power Rangers are the ones who have to stop them. No alternate endings based off the character you use, which would have been amazing. But that's probably asking too much out of a game purely designed to ... Read the rest of this Review
Final Fantasy II - Demonic Pandemonium
01-05-13 04:21 AM
Sometimes a game is just bad.
I'm not big on Final Fantasy, but I am an avid fan of the dungeon crawler concept, Dungeons&Dragons, etc. Many have said that Final Fantasy 2 is one of if not the worst of The Final Fantasies, and frankly I did not want to believe it. Being one of the few jrpgs in general that is skill-based over linear level grinding, I was actually expecting a lot more then I got. At that I truly believed the hacker did the best he could to make this game workable. But to no avail...

GRAPHICS: 5.
The graphics are not horrid, but they could be better. It'd be difficult for someone who has never heard of Final Fantasy to believe this one was a sequel, because the graphics have actually degraded in many respects as far as random encounters go. While still colorful, and in fact more vibrant and unique color schemes then it's predecessor, everything just seems like a doodle you would draw up in class. The hacker did not make any changes to the graphics that I know of, so I'll just rate it as a five.

SOUND: 7.
The sound is an improvement to the first Final Fantasy, and matches the environment the music is put in. Though a bit repetitive at times, it is not aggravating and a pleasant melody with intense, yet mild by most game standards for combat music.

ADDICTIVENESS: 1.
Try as I might, I could not see the game through. Too many things made it a chore to continue. While I'll save most of the complaints for difficulty, it should bare mentioning that a lot of players would become quickly frustrated by the lack of information presented to you. One could assume the function of most spells and items, but it does not tell you this at the shops. So either you have to take a guess, or know the game relatively well before you even start. There is also a lot of minor annoyances that while would not kill a game in their own right, piled together the way they do make it almost unplayable.

STORY: 4.
Older games are not played for their story. It... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Fire Red Omega
08-29-12 11:39 PM
By far the best pokemon hack I've played.
This is one of the best pokemon hacks I've seen, and that's saying something. You really feel like the hacker tried when he developed Red Omega.

I will leave out explanations for why I rated sound, depth,  difficulty the way I did. Basically those elements had not changed, and were never very good to begin with. But there are some major changes as far as the game itself.

GRAPHICS: 7.
All new sprites. It's definitely a relief to see something new to stare at when doing battles and such. Some of the sprites are a bit blotchy, but it's a small price to pay for a whole new outlook. I'll take blotchy over repetition any day.

ADDICTIVENESS: 7.
There's just more to do, without ever having to change a single thing about Fire Red. Now talking to NPCs is somewhat rewarding. While most still puke out some garbage about obvious control commands or random pokemon facts... nearly every route now has an NPC that will bestow upon you a starter pokemon. And these starter pokemon are at a decent enough level for you to train up, or take to the daycare center and feasibly use them in combat at some point.

CHALLENGE: 7.
The challenge has jumped a little. Pokemon games are notorious for being cheap, disregarding their own rules and math equations. This however, isn't the problem. I never really get the feeling as though the game is "cheating", so much as it's just a much higher standard. Pokemon are tougher, gym leaders have six pokemon, and your rival is much less of a slouch and will give you an extraordinary hard time every time you come into contact with him. But even the challenge seems better, because it seems less artificial. Despite how everyone's a bit stronger, it makes sense then to struggle. As opposed to just supposedly "rolling badly", yet conveniently it's only on the player's end that badluck seems to prevail.

Red Omega simply works on all the blatant problems with pokemon, and does so subtly. Every route ha... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Dragonstone 2
08-04-12 02:36 AM
For what it's worth... one of the better pokemon hacks.
I have to admit, the creator behind this hack actually made some pokemon a little more bearable. Not completely mind you. But enough for me to see enough to make a good judgement. I am not going to punish myself sitting through another pokemon game to it's completition.

GRAPHICS: 5.
I give the graphics an average score. There is some drastic changes, but you can tell it's just recoloring, and moving around trees and such. While I appreciate the new attacks, new pokemon, etc. It's just not done all that well as far as appearance goes.

SOUND: 5.
No changes to sound, and pokemon's sound track is about the only thing that doesn't get frustrating and tiresome. That's probably an accident.

ADDICTIVENESS: 3.
I'll give the hacker this much... there is more to this then any pokemon game in it's normal incarnation. As said, there are new pokemon, new attacks, and the map itself has been more streamlined to make for a speed-run. I'm glad to see all of that. Unfortunately, the new pokemon quickly become as annoying as the original in that they are continually spammed in their respective regions. The new attacks while fun to gain, and are extremely powerful, (Power: 250) often of times seem out of place. (Why is a swalot learning a dragon type move?) In general though, you will be rewarded for your endeavors with much faster attack learning rates, more promising attacks, and with the plethora of rare candies and masterballs at your disposal... leveling is as difficult as you let it be, and you can catch... some of the pokemon you like.

I say some, because well... it seems kind of a dichotomy to have nearly free to purchase masterballs, but then still incorporate emerald's basic design in what pokemon appear where. What's really the point? If it had incorporated randomizer, then I could understand. It just seems like it's mocking the player to give them masterballs, then have really nothing to do with them. Just to catch pokemon the... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Toxic Purple (Beta V1)
07-30-12 11:57 PM
Pokemon Toxic Purple: Beta or not, there is no hope for this game.
Another great idea, crumbled in my hands by people who don't know what they're doing... It might seem harsh, but it gets old very fast seeing time after time, people who can take the time to hack a game, not notice little things that would make them think "hmmm, that might not be fun. No, in fact... that might get really annoying, really fast, and would make me look like a petty infant for implementing in the first place."

What do I mean? Well, we'll get into that as we move on...

GRAPHICS: 1.
The graphics are a downgrade to pokemon fire red. Which were hardly known for it's wonderful graphics to begin with. The main character is blotchy, and unattractive. And I have to look at that thing the entire time.

SOUND: 2.
The sound is downgraded too. Just because pokemon orchestrated music, doesn't mean you should milk it for the purpose of the creep factor... The lowered Lavender Town tone I can deal with. But your initial Rocket entrance is brutal.

ADDICTIVENESS: 1.
You're not going to want to play this game after five minutes. Watching the excitement fade as you think you're going to live a highly adventurous life as a Team Rocket member... only to have those dreams shattered in an instant. Your pokemon are all weak and pathetic, every other trainer is way stronger then you and has more pokemon at their disposal, you can't just waltz into a pokemon center, and there is no sort of compensation. Clearly the creator did not think this through. If you're going to make a game about being the bad guy... act like it. Don't just have everybody giving you snide comments and proclaiming yourself to be the villain. Have options. Extortion vs theft comes to mind. Though this would require a much more in depth mind that apparently pokemon players just do not possess. The idea that perhaps a trainer would not actually FIGHT, but instead opt to threaten said human into giving up money or loot. Most people don't even pay attention when yo... Doom
04-18-12 04:30 AM
Did not live up to my expectations.
So for a long time now... I've been meaning to play Doom. Whilst not the original first-person shooter, it's one of the parenting games to a long line, and was probably far more played that Castle Wolfenstien. So what I had in my hands here, was a rare opportunity to play one of the originals, one of the games that defined gaming as a whole. And what did I get?

A lackluster mess, overly pixelated, and terrible controls. Mind you, I was playing the game boy advance port ... that might of had a lot to do with it. But I figured the game boy advance version would have more accessible cheat codes so I could actually delve into every detail of the differences between easy and hard mode, different corners, different things to be seen and sought after. The codes didn't work for me, but more then that I just wanted a good view of things. And the pics seemed a lot brighter and more clean on the GBA screen shots. Little did I know what I was in for.

GRAPHICS: 2.
I cannot stress enough how terrible the graphics are. Graphics don't make a game... but they can sure as hell break one. Terrible graphics aren't just unappealing, but inhibit gameplay. The fact is when you cannot tell start from finish, because it's just a blurry pile of blockades and vaguely human resembling shapes coming at you... it makes for terrible gameplay. Now I know this is an older game, but I've seen plenty of games with far superior graphics then this. You mean to tell me that you can muster up more gorgeous and clean cut graphics for a power rangers game, over an iconic first-person shooter that was to completely replace it's predecessor?! Bad graphics do not just mean ugly graphics, they mean bad game design.

The "only" reason Doom gets a 2 instead of a 1, is that I like the colorful icons. It's almost like you're a Lego man... trapped in a grim dark environment. It's out of place, but I don't mind it. And at the very least, it makes telling items apart far more easy.... Read the rest of this Review

Not a bad mod, and definitely improves pokemon.
Despite how I'm giving it such bad ratings statistically... there's a reason I rated this game pretty highly. It's that pokemon is a pretty bad game outright. Extremely unbalanced, tedious, and with lots of annoying traditions it hasn't outgrown. It's nice to see someone make a hack that even if only indirectly, helps fix some of those gratuitous problems.

GRAPHICS: 3.
What alterations have been done actually have downgraded in many ways. While I actually find it amusing that May sports neon hair, and the machoke you see moving your boxes when you move has been replaced with a truck somehow fitting inside your house... it takes away from the entire environment. Especially when many of times it blurs the lines between movable terrain and blockades, or the fact trainers can go through each other. It's all very glitchy, but not so much that it impedes on the game. Just not attractive looking.

SOUND: 3.
Purely the soundtrack to pokemon ruby. This isn't bad... but for a hack to contribute nothing to the sound just seems a bit of a let down.

ADDICTIVENESS: 1.
I do have some things about the game I don't like. Mostly things that would exist in a pokemon game anyway, so it's not the hacker's fault. Essentially to fix pokemon you'd have to work from the ground up. But there is one major flaw.

That rare pokemon, the entire point of this hack... are pretty limited in scope. Oh sure, you can catch a gengar, rayquaza, and a slew of other powerful and unique breeds. But the fact is, I don't see them all put in there. Mind you, I did not play the "WHOLE" game... Because after you leave your home town, the rare pokemon finds end. And you are back to playing boring old ruby... There is no incentive to keep going. Maybe there are more legendaries waiting for you on the outskirts of Honen reigion... But until then, you're stuck just playing ruby over again. And I don't have that kind of patience. If you're a dragon type fan, you're goin... Read the rest of this Review

A pretty good game.
Despite my seemingly low ratings, I am actually very satisfied with this game, and would say "it's the way pokemon should have been".

I have yet to finish the game, but I probably will. I really do like to finish a game before I review it. But I'm busy doing other things, and would like to experience a lot of the other games on Vizzed. But my experience would pretty much remain unchanged I imagine.

Graphics: 7.
The graphics are very primitive. This game was released during a time pokemon gold was coming out. I know gamefreak has a higher budget, but this is definitely laziness on the part of the developers. The good news is, that as blotchy as it is... you can still tell one monster, from the next. That's the main thing. The monsters are unique and colorful enough, that the backward detail can be tolerated.

Sound: 6.
The music is good, but overly repetitive. It definitely has that old school music to it. And for some gamers that might be refreshing, but it would be nice if it mixed it up a little.

Addictiveness: 6.
The fact is, I was able to put it down and forget about it. But if you want a monster collecting game that isn't pokemon, this is a wonderful alternative. This game has 200 monsters, and the sequels probably have more. However, catching them works entirely differently. So it's debatable whether or not you're actually getting more out of it. But at least you don't have to wait to beat the elite four to get the rest. Which defeats the whole purpose.

Story: 2.
I don't games to have riveting stories. But at least B movie level, and this really isn't even that. You are a boy... your sister says not to stay up, as children who don't go to bed when they're supposed to get kidnapped by monsters. (What sort of abusive parents taught them that crap?!) Only to find out in an ironic twist, that whilst staying up... a monster was after your goody two shoes sister instead of you. And kidnaps he... Read the rest of this Review

The only reason I'm not more mad was because it was free
( Video contains swearing, viewer discretion advised)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still a waste of my time however... my video says it for me. I posted it on chat because I'm still getting used to the site. I mostly game here to play games, not chat, or write reviews. However, I suppose it does help me spice up my youtube channel to do reviews of games I have played on here. Some issues I did not cover in the video were that.

PREMISE:
The premise was good. A lot of what attracts me to a game, is the premise. If I like the concept, I'll see a game through usually. But this was just so poorly executed, I couldn't. And quite frankly, it made me lose all faith in pokemon, that gamefreak, upon all the other broken crap, allowed some God awful ability, that completely destroys meta gaming.

HACKS:
I love playing hacks. I like seeing what people can accomplish, without the monetary incentive. Hackers are not the big business guys, spamming the same title over and over, hackers put more heart into it... I never said there wasn't a few black hearted people in the mix.

JRPG:
I'm actually on a quest to find a good jrpg. As really, I can't find one. I can't think of one decent jrpg, other then Blue Dragon. Which I still got bored with, but I enjoy it when I do feel up to playing. I've yet to actually beat it though, as it cannot hold my interest long enough to see it through.

As far as the actual rating stats that the site says to cover...

GRAPHICS/SOUND: Typical of a pokemon game.

ADDICTIVE:
Well... to tell you I do not want to see it through. The passion of a new pokemon experience and grim dark premise will fade fast.

STORY:
The story was just poorly constructed, and sounds like it's trying to rip off an anime. A bad anime. I don't find the f... Read the rest of this Review
