NASCAR 98 Obviously a step down from the PS1 version, but it's better than N99 or N2000 for the N64.

Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue
11-11-14 02:17 PM
To Infinity and Beyond?
Toy Story was the franchise that put Pixar on the map in 1995, and in 1999 the world got a sequel and a new game. Like the first game, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue follows the sequence of events that take place in the movie. Developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Activision, the Playstation version came out in November of 1999, about a week after the movie hit theaters. You play as Buzz Lightyear on his way to Al's Penthouse to save Woody, unlike the movie there is no Mr. Potato Head, no Rex, and no Hamm to accompany you in a party. Although all three do make appearances in the different levels.

Graphics (7/10)- This game tries to do too much with their graphics, everything seems choppy and the polygonal characters, models, and even map elements change shape at different distances. This is mostly due to the fact that each level is just one large area, as opposed to several smaller sub levels most other platformers had. The animations in character movement and environmental effects are fluent with very little slowdown. Before and after each level there is an FMV sequence taken straight from the movie that slightly spoils the movie for those who didn't see it before the game's release. The sequences are typical late 90's quality, 240p at a 4:3 frame versus the frame used in theaters, not a disappointment, only average by the standards back then.

Sound (7/10)- The game's soundtrack wasn't developed by Randy Newman (Who did the music for the movie) but instead was done by Andy Blythe and Marten Joustra. Hardly strangers to Disney/Pixar games as they previously worked on Mickey Mania, Toy Story 1, and A Bug's Life. The music isn't bad, but in the later levels it's hardly noticeable. I keep thinking I turned the volume down when I didn't. The FMV voices sound alright and character voices are rather short; only one ... Read the rest of this Review
Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time

Of Carrots and Clocks
Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time can easily be described as a hidden gem on the Playstation. Developed by Behaviour Interactive and published by Infogrames in 1999, this Warner Brothers game stars everyone's favorite wascilly wabbit, Bugs Bunny. This game can be played in 3 languages; English, French, and Spanish. With five time periods and 21 colorful levels to explore for carrots, clocks, and ACME crates, you could have the time of your life with this title.

Graphics (9/10)- Everything was taken into traditional Warner Brothers fashion when producing this game. From minor details such as grass, dirt, and water to the big deals such as character animations and rendered models, Behaviour took great pride in producing this game the way it was meant to be. Textures are crisp and sharp, character models are crisp polygons and are easily identifiable, and each level has its own distinct characteristics that make no two levels truly alike, with the exception of two Stone Age era levels; "Wabbit on the Run" and "The Hare Blower." Both levels use the same base map, but Hare Blower is an extended night version of Wabbit on the Run.

Sound (8/10)- Like the graphics, the sound was done in the traditional manner; scores upon scores of orchestral soundtrack that give every era and their levels their own distinct theme. Sound effects and character vocals are clear and easy to understand (Even Mel Blanc's archived Yosemite Sam voices sound great.)

Addictiveness (8/10)- The story may get old, but the gameplay sure doesn't. Every time I start a new game, I look forward to each level as great memories come back to me and make me remember why Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time is my favorite PS1 title. Along the way, Bugs will learn several new abilities taught to him by Merlin at different time periods. Such abilities include reaching a great height, summoning fans to jump around the air with, activating an explosive piano, and getting Beaky Buzzard to give you a lift.

NASCAR Heat
11-11-14 11:39 AM
Don't judge a game by its Graphics
Like 1997's NASCAR Racing from Papyrus, NASCAR Heat was a port of the Hasbro/Infrogrames racing title of the same name released in 2000. In the time of where EA dominated the console scene and Papyrus never making another console racing game, NASCAR Heat's introduction was a pleasant sight to see and would start a trilogy of Nascar games produced by Monster Games and published by Infogrames and Hasbro Interactive.

Graphics (6/10)- For a port, the graphics leave a lot to be desired. Vehicle skins are monotoned to one specific color on each car and they look rather pixellated. Vehicle bodies suffer also with a much lower poly count than the bodies EA used for Nascar '99 and 2000. In addition to the bodies, there is a minimal damage model that hardly puts a dent in these cars. Tracks look decent for the system but draw distance takes a hit in the process. The game starts with an FMV intro featuring a short tribute for Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin Jr., two young drivers who were killed in separate accidents at New Hampshire International Speedway in 2000. Followed by announcer Allen Bestwick welcoming the player to NASCAR Heat, followed by a montage featuring PS1 gameplay and driver bloopers while recording lines for the Beat the Heat section.

Sound (5/10)- The intro rock track is hardly noticeable, the menu music has a nice ring to it that for some reason is exclusive to the PS1 version as the PC version featured a different theme that would later be used in NASCAR Heat 2002. The sound quality of your crew chief and spotter are somewhat shoddy but subtitles are available which help significantly. The voices of Bestwick and associated drivers are nice and clear in the Beat the Heat FMV sequences. But the engine and impact sounds are a relative letdown that result in me turning the volume down.

Addictiveness (4/10)- Like most racing games, not a lot changes throughout your gameplay experience. Perhaps the most addictive thing about this game is c... Read the rest of this Review

NASCAR Racing Review [PS1]
NASCAR Racing for the PS1 was a PC port of Papyrus's NASCAR Racing 2 released in 1996. This port had to have several cutbacks to make it on the PS1. For example, the PC game allowed a full field of 40 competitors at the same time, NASCAR Racing only allows 21 which is still good compared to the EA games that soon followed. The only other major cutback was that players can't race as their favorite drivers, only to be restricted to 3 liveries of the #96 Papyrus Racing Games Ford Thunderbird (Rookie & Ace) and Chevrolet Monte Carlo (Veteran).

Graphics (7/10)- The game starts out with an FMV intro featuring a decent quality rock song that was also used as the intro to the PC game. The car bodies are derived from the PC game as well but suffer the same problem as the PC game; not every part of the car is painted, the base schemes just stop suddenly which was normal for the Papyrus PC games until NASCAR Racing 3 in 1999. The tracks look the same as they were in the PC game but suffer a tad of a slowdown. The graphics of the PS1 version are somewhat close to the original game for the PC, but the slowdown may turn some people away.

Sound (8/10)- This game features nine songs, all instrumental rock that play at a very high quality which is amazing for 1997. Sounds including engines and wall impacts are the same as the PC version which sounded very lifelike at the time of the release.

Addictiveness (3/10)- Unless you're a diehard NASCAR fan, odds are you won't play this game for very long which is a common theme with racing games in general due to the stereotypical going around in circles with very little changes.

Depth (4/10)- This game features 4 racing modes; Arcade, Simulation, Championship, and Testing modes. In arcade mode you're given the option to run three different cars depending on your skill level; Rookie for the beginners, Veteran for the somewhat experienced, and Ace for the hardcore racer. None of which really matter since... Read the rest of this Review
