Good on Paper, Bad in Practice
Conflict was one of the first turn based strategy if not strategy games in general ever released, but thankfully, it didn't ruin the genre for the future. What it did, however, was turn a lot of people away from it and stall its growth. The game functions smoothly and feels crisp, but due to the fact that it takes forever to play through a game and you can't save a match, there was no feasible way to invite a friend to play multiplayer. Most people are looking for something more exciting to do for fun that doesn't take forever.
The singleplayer was highly biased towards the computer through statistical rigging which is a legacy it left behind that strategy games are ruined by today. This isn't just in the fact that the computer starts with more fame points than you which lets it build advanced units right away while you're compelled to redundantly counterattack in every single match, but it's also the fact that in combat, the computer's maneuvers successfully execute much more often than your own. Computer attacks will succeed more often and deal more damage while your evasion and retreat maneuvers will fail more often. To even have a decent chance at winning an engagement, you must use a counter unit. Using a par unit even of higher quality will often result in defeat while the computer will get away with using par units against your own. I say this especially with regards to your flag tank. Using M1A1s against the enemy flag tank will often fail, but the enemy using T80s against your flag tank will often succeed. The same thing happens often between attacking with M60A3s against T62s, M151s against BRDM2s, M247s against ZSU23s, F4s against MIG-23s, and AH1Ss versus MI-24s. The enemy will still come out on top 60/40. On top of that, the computer has a tendency to score engine and pilot hits much more often which can result in your counter units still getting knocked out.
