Hearts of Iron IV
08-01-16 06:41 PM
The Best World War II Experience To Date!
As many as 100 million people may have been killed in what has been universally referred to as the most destructive conflict in human history. Well over half of those were civilians- innocents left to starve during rationing, millions murdered for their religion or ethnicity, or many others who simply found themselves in the wrong place during a bombing raid. Bit of a bummer way to start off a review, right? Imagine how Paradox Interactive was feeling, trying to make an entire video game based off of World War II (or the Second World War for the Brits out there). This Swedish development house took the tasteful route, depicting all the intensity and complexity of war without any of the atrocities. So while you could literally be Hitler you couldn't be literally Hitler. Just one problem, Hearts of Iron looked like a brick and was immensely unintuitive- you could spend hours reorganizing the command of your armies- so it flopped. Not to mention the game was banned in communist China for depicting Taiwan under Japanese rule (which it was at the time, but you know....).

So Paradox tried again in 2005 with Hearts of Iron II. The technology system was better but everything else? Brick. Then 2009 rolled around and with it Hearts of Iron III. And how was it? Brick, unintuitive, not happening. So the Swedes opted to work on the more lucrative and potential-filled Europa Universalis and Victoria series. Once they got tired of that, however, it was back to World War II. This time, it was promised Hearts of Iron IV would not look like a brick and you would not spend eight hours stopping your nation's freefall. It was finally released on June 6, 2016 because why not coincide with a major WWII date? Let's see how the Second Great War fares on 2016 technology!

Who Said Hitler Has To Take Over Europe? Why Not Yugoslavia? Or Luxembourg?

On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, triggering World War II. Long story short,... Read the rest of this Review
Grand Theft Auto Advance

An Unsatisfying Crime Adventure on GBA!
Ask anyone what they think of when they hear “Grand Theft Auto”. Most will associate it with brutality and violence, more conservative folk may interpret it as a weapon in and of itself. The general view, however, is that this series is vicious and folks not familiar with such acts need not observe. So why is it that Rockstar Games decided to put a title of their most infamous franchise on the Game Boy Advance? Was it intentional- to “taint” a system made by the devotedly family friendly Nintendo? The world may never figure it out. What is known for sure is that Grand Theft Auto Advance was originally intended to be a port of Grand Theft Auto III, but was eventually made into a prequel of the latter. Released in 2004, GTA:A came out the same day as San Andreas, arguably the greatest open world game of all time. Can this almost-was-a-port hold up to its big brother?

A Not So Fresh Story of Ascendance in The Big Apple.

2000, Liberty City. Small-time crook Mike and his mentor Vinnie are “saving” up money to move away from Liberty and on to more lucrative opportunities. Almost ready to leave, Mike witnesses Vinnie's death via car bomb. Swearing vengeance, Mike travels around the city doing work for various criminal figures in order to elevate his own status and deduce who Vinnie's killer is while also working towards his original goal of leaving the so-called “worst place in America” for good. New characters here are the rotund bartender Jonnie, Colombian mob lord Cisco, and the physical appearance of treacherous Jamaican Yardie boss King Courtney. There are also some returning members: bomb expert 8-Ball, Yakuza leader Asuka Kasen, and the prostitute Misty.

No matter the limitations of the system, any game can have a good story. Given that GTA is widely lauded for including such a feature with each title, it's strange seeing it absent here. I counted, and there are only about 8 or 9 charact... Read the rest of this Review
Sid Meier's Pirates!: Live the Life

Sid Sails The Seas Once More!
The name Sid Meier is nowadays synonymous with huge strategy games featuring astronomical levels of replay-ability and addictiveness, but old Sid wasn't always making games like that. In the 1980s he got his start on more basic projects, mostly of the flying simulator variety. Titles like F-15 Strike Eagle and Solo Flight, while popular with a certain audience were by no means hits. So, Meier and his company MicroProse opted to make a new type of game, this one set in in the Caribbean from the 16th to 18th centuries during the height of piracy. Advertised primarily by the addition of Meier's name to the title (yes, this is where the trend started) Pirates! was a critical and
commercial success, giving players the immersive experience of being a pirate on the open sea, sans syphilis.

17 years later, Sid had a new company, Firaxis, and he decided to modernize his classic title, breathing in to it new life. This new life needed to bring more in to the series- better graphics, a soundtrack, and even more havoc to wreak. When released in 2004 the new Sid Meier's Pirates! promised all of these things and more. Let's see if Firaxis kept that promise.

A Pirate Must Have a Backstory......No Matter How Boring!

It's the 17th century and a European noble family has deployed a fleet to repay a large debt owed to the villainous Marquis de la Montalban. The Marquis storms into the family's estate informing them the fleet has vanished. As such, the family is enslaved except for one boy, who escapes.

Ten years later the boy has fully matured and is ready to rescue and avenge his clan. After signing up with one of four nations (France, England, Holland, or Spain) to head to the Caribbean where the Marquis is based, the man leads a mutiny against an oppressive captain. With his very own ship, the man begins his career as a pirate- one that will see him not only attempt to save his kin but also butt heads with other pirates and even whole nations...
