Battlefield Hardline
04-24-15 04:26 PM
"What Goes Around Comes Back Around..."
There's blood on the streets of Miami. A drug-fueled war, enemies around every corner. It's hard to tell friend from foe, anyone can backstab you in the end. Battlefield: Hardline. Enter the concrete jungle.

Graphics: 7/10
The single player graphics for this game are great. It's genuinely fun to watch the cut-scenes play out, even the non-interactive ones. When the game needs to look vibrant, it does its job. When it needs to convey a sense of caution, it does its job. Grimy crime scenes jump to life with the poor victims lying on the ground. Blood and bullet holes look realistic; not like "a garbage photoshop job".
Multi player is where this game's graphics suffer. Every year, Battlefield games suffer awful multi player graphical glitches. Here are some of Battlefield: Hardline's, off the top of my head.
Assassinations leave bodies floating or in walls.
Helicopter machine gun "spazs" out.
Motorcycle ground glitches more than it should.
Because of the graphical glitches in multi player, and their general lack of quality compared to single player, Battlefield: Hardline gets a "7" for Graphics.

Sound: 10/10
This game has good gameplay sounds and a good soundtrack. Nice. Gunfire, screeching tires, and "thug language" add a immersive layer to the "Cops N' Robbers" style game. The characters' had very convincing voice acting, to the point where I even missed some foreshadowing. Realism is a must for the Battlefield franchise, and this game has achieved it.
The soundtrack for this game was nice as well. It really fit in with the game's theme and helped tie the sinews together just that much more.
Some songs that I liked that you might enjoy. These were in the game, and in the multi player radio:
"This is Radio Clash" - The Clash
"Oh My Darling (Don't Cry)" - Run The Jewels
"Sound of Da Police" - KRS One
"A Taste of Silver" - Until The Ribbon Breaks
They even had a song custom made for the game... Read the rest of this Review
Left 4 Dead 2

Help! Jockey! Help! Charger! TANKKKK!
Imagine a zombie apocalypse where you're thrust into a wild fight to survive with three absolute strangers you know nothing about. Now, imagine if some of these zombies were "mutated" from a strain of the virus. Imagine fighting these things is your only hope. What? You know about that? Than congratulations, you're acquainted with the world of Left 4 Dead 2.

Graphics: 7/10
Keep in mind this game was released in 2009. For coming out in such a year, the graphics are not that bad. Honestly, they probably could have been better polished, but they were not awful. The graphics really built up suspense, the gray, stale atmosphere, and crazed looking undead running out at you from the distance were the graphics masterful doing. However, graphical glitching, such as zombie arms through walls and the infamous Jockey face rendering in the back of an empty truck are really predictable letdowns.

Sound: 9/10
All horror games need to create an atmosphere, even if they seem as run and gun as Left 4 Dead. However, the creepy ambiance really seals the deal. You can hear the special infected in the background as well, especially the dreaded Witch. Her sobs are the last thing you want to hear, and could haunt the timid ones' nightmares. Mood struck well, Left 4 Dead 2, mood struck well.

Addictiveness: 10/10
This game is just one of those games you come back to. It's really unexplainable. I guess killing the special infected and blasting away at the limbs of the commons is just... Fun. Also, workshop support means awesome mods. So there's that. Tons of weapons is also pretty addicting... Oh well, we'll never know.

Story: 8/10
The story is somewhat generic on the surface: two groups of four strangers are thrown together and are forced to fight for their lives against the endless scourge of infected that wage against them. They are always fighting to a brief escape, whether it be a safe room or a helicopter (which is inevitably tak... Read the rest of this Review
Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure

I'm Batman! ...With a Purple Mutated Sentient Sock!
(To be quite honest, this review is based off of my experience with the Steam version. But I didn't see a PC version in the VGR, so I decided to post my review here.)

Graphics: 7/10
The graphics are made in a very simplistic manner. It feels as though you could be drawing every scene in a notebook. The style is drawn in a very sketched out and penciled way (which is fitting, since this game is based on the adventures of Maxwell and DC Comics characters). At the same time, some of the items involve layers of details that are so intricate that you can't help but crack a grin. Imagine having to design thousands of items from the English language: anything as simple as an apple to as exotic as a green beautiful naked koi.

Sound: 8/10
Do you remember a childhood of reading comic books? Nostalgic, right? Well, do you remember the words that would splurge over a page when a superhero took a crack at an everyday thug, or a ne'er-do-well villain? "Boom" and "Kapow" might come to mind. This is a key component to the game's sound design. Every time you melee attack an enemy, a super fanfare will play as one of those words appears as a cloud in front of the enemy. Firing a weapon is nothing great to gape over, everything there is standard. Anything else isn't enough of a big deal to mention here.

Addictiveness: 8/10
One of the game's best qualities is how addicting it is. You can make anything. Anything. That's its most luring feature.
Try these, and you will be hooked:
Pink flying sentient bath tub
Microscopic red deadly batman
Cyborg Superman
I think by now you understand. Now go ahead and make that Purple Friendly Python pet you always dreamed of, but never received.

Story: 6/10
Alright, so the game starts with you (Maxwell) and your sister (Lily) trying to settle who's favorite superheroes were stronger. Y'know, that whole argument. The two characters then take Lily's magic globe, (which can travel anyw... Read the rest of this Review

Essentially: Scan-a-Car!
Ah... Nostalgia hit me hard. I just found this old DS cartridge lying around. I looked back on all the fun times I had with this game. The first thing I did was head to the VGR to write up a review on how excellent I thought this game was. And now I am.

Graphics - 7/10
For a DS game, I thought the Graphics were pretty up to par. However, upon closer examination, the terrain is somewhat blocky, as well as the enemies, both autobot and military. The transformation from robot to car and vise versa is also not as fluid as it could be, but as a handheld game, I think its best to cut it some slack in this category.

Sound - 9/10
This game's sound is really nice. The robots sound static-y and grizzled, as they should. The clanking of metal and gunfire is also pretty realistic sounding. The explosions are somewhat sub par though.
The soundtrack is fits with the games atmosphere; it is kind of what you would expect from an action movie, loud and racing. Very immersive.

Addictiveness - 10/10
I found this game very addictive to play for several reasons:
1. The story was genuinely difficult. In my prime playing this game I think I reached the final mission and stopped. (The boss was hard, in my defense.)
2. The "scan" feature. I could rant about how awful a decision it was to take this feature out of the sequel, but I dare not even speak of that game. If you like Pokémon and "collecting 'em all!" or you're an achievement hunter out to pin down every last accomplishment, you would fall in love with this simple, yet innovative control right away. Essentially, this feature would allow you to scan vehicles and then transform into them. At will. You could be a rocket firing SUV, then when under attack? Become a Tank. That's why this feature really hooked me.
3. This is one of the only sandbox games I know about for the DS. And not only is it darned good, but you can blow stuff up. Which is a plus.

Story -... Read the rest of this Review
Payday 2
11-28-14 03:44 PM
"Guys, Fix the Drill!"
A little bit of my Payday 2 gaming:

I love this game. I play it somewhat often and I have to say, it's one of my favorite Steam games. Although I wrote this game's review for PS3, the VGR had no Steam category, so this is based on my EXPERIENCES WITH THE STEAM VERSION. Take that as a disclaimer of sorts before I continue.

Graphics - 8/10

This games graphics are pretty good. As it is, I've never been one to judge a game on its graphics, unless they affect my personal ability to play and enjoy the game. And the way this game looks does not affect gameplay. I did, however, rate the graphics an eight because there are some graphical bugs. These bugs do not directly affect the game. Most of them are actually really funny, involving "corpse spasms" of the guards and what not.

Sound - 9/10

The songs in this game are really great, getting your blood pumping and getting you more involved in the game. There is a lot of futuristic tunes and quick music, but this categories' downfall is its' variety. There is slim to no other types of music, unless you download one of many Payday soundtrack DLCs. This can turn off the easy listener, but I personally enjoy the music myself.

The second component to the sound breakdown is the battle involvedness. The gunshots are fluid and realistic sounding, the voice acting is up to par, and everything sounds realistic until Bain starts shouting "Hey guys, fix the drill!" time after time again. (It kind of ruins the immersion.)

Addictiveness - 10/10

I love to play this game. The variety of heists has you coming back time and time again. You don't even need to play different heists; trying to master the different routes of a stealth heists or trying to map out where all the Gage Courier package spawns are on a heist makes this game addicting by itself. Playing with other people on multiplayer is an enriching experience, and you're guar... Read the rest of this Review
Failing Bird

Flappy Bird- On a Console
You may be thinking, "Flappy Bird was an old fad. Why do I even care if it's on console now?" Well, Failing Bird isn't just Flappy Bird copy and pasted to console. If Flappy Bird and the Impossible Game had a baby it would be Failing Bird. Read on to find out why!

Graphics: 7/10
These graphics are impressive for an XBox Arcade game, especially one mimicking Flappy Bird. Your character, the little yellow duck-like bird, is oddly appealing the way he was designed. The background and pillars really convey a strong feeling, and if I'm correct, are a somewhat accurate depiction of ancient cities. Even the traps are appealing to look at, up until the point they kill you.

Sound: 6/10
Some liberties were taken, while some sounds remained the same from the original. There's a cute and happy tune playing in the background, almost mocking what seems like your inevitable demise. Every time you flap, it makes a slight bouncing sound; the one from the original Flappy Bird. The death sound is also the same as the original. On the topic of the background music, I feel the loop song in the background fit well with this game, and it really did sound happy through all my rage. I would have rated the sound higher, however the creator didn't take enough risks, keeping much of the original sound.

Addictiveness: 10/10
Just like the original, this game compels you to play again. And again and again. Every time you die, you seem to say to yourself, "All right, we're going to do this again, but this time, we're setting a high score!" And this happens so many times over, alluring you to play even more. You'll be saying to yourself, "Where did all the time go?"

Story: 5/10
Apparently the creator released a statement saying there is an end to the game, so there must be a story. However, this statement has never truly been confirmed, and I've never seen anyone get to the finish, and haven't done so myself. And to make matters worse, there is a ... Little Big Planet
03-09-14 02:40 PM
Create and Play Boundlessly!
LittleBigPlanet is a wondrous game where you play as a unique "Sackboy" with special powers, as he tromps through different levels! Sounds like an interesting formula for a video game? It is! Let's get straight into this review!

Graphics: 7 /10
Although at first the graphics won't seem too great, they are what you make of them. You see, the better you are at creating objects in your own world, the better the graphics can be. You can start with a blank canvas and turn it into a burning forest, or a fancy palace. Or, the graphics can be really bad if you can't build. The story's graphics, however, are charming and wonderful all the way through to the end. All in all, 7 of 10.

Sound: 10/10
This game has a wide variety of sound effects and music throughout the story. The game features 40 musical compositions, including music from artists The Go! and Kenneth Young. Fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise will feel right at home with music from the MGS DLC. The MGS music includes MGS4 "The Hunted", MGS4 "The Hunter", and MGS2 "Yell "Dead Cell" (VR Remix)". These original and remastered pieces of music feel right at home throughout the game. In fact, if you grab them as prizes, you can even use your favorite music in your own personal levels and creations! The soundtrack is really great! 10/10!

Addictiveness: 10/10
It's not hard to pick this game up and play it again, even if you've beat the story. The multiplayer let's players build and create levels with their friends, and then publish them to the world! You can always stumble upon a level you haven't played yet, which means that there is always a reason to come back to this game and play it again. And again. And so on and so forth.

Story: 9/10
The story of LittleBigPlanet ends in a touching display of the meaning of friendship, and the possibilities of what you can create with friends. (No spoilers though!) However the story starts on a completely different note. The Sa... Read the rest of this Review
Fossil Fighters

When Dinosaurs Clash!
Another day, my second review!
Fossil Fighters is a fun game. I cannot stress that enough. I love this game. You are on your way to Vivosaur Island, a resort run by the Richmond Foundation. The island houses the Fossil Stadium and Fossil Battles are fought there. Of course, you want to take part in these battles! That's all I'm saying about the story until we get there, though. You may be thinking, "This is just a Pokemon rip-off." I assure you; it's not. Without further ado, the review!
Graphics: 8/10
For the DS, the 3D graphics are amazing. The characters are somewhat strange looking, and the environments are kind of bland. But the battles are where this game shines through. The Vivosaurs are stunning creatures, and the camera angles on their 3D forms captures that beautifully. The Vivosaurs look so good I have to give the Graphics a 8 out of 10. Amazing!
Sound: 9/10
The sound in this game is not too shabby. The main menu and file selection screen's music really captures the excitement someone feels when you pop a game into your device. Then, the calm, carefree breezy music during the opening scene with the Captain on the boat accentuates the feeling on the calm waves rolling as you read the dialogue. These are merely examples of the soundtrack. They fit with the situation perfectly, which makes the soundtrack that much better.
Addictiveness: 7/10
I don't why this game says "Play me again!" but it does. It brings back fond memories of raising Pokemon for me, though the battles are one in their own. Its story also wanted to make me play it again, for how suspenseful and fun it was. Battles were intense and required some strategy. All of these aspects together proved to be a winning combination for this game, and it was so fun it even spawned a sequel!
Story: 10/10
People may disagree with me, but this game provides a very compelling story! The severity of the obstacles in your way to becoming a Champion really come together as th... Read the rest of this Review
Pokemon Rumble Blast
03-07-14 09:04 PM
An Interesting Pokemon Game
Pokemon Rumble Blast was an interesting twist on the Pokemon genre. You see, in this game, Pokemon are toys. They compete, similarly to the other games, to become a Pokemon Champion. Unlike other games, however, the Pokemon have no trainers and are independent thinkers. They can talk, form alliances, and have rivals. I'm not gonna delve more into the Story until we get there though...
Graphics: 5/10
For this day and age the characters just look too blocky and undefined. If Minecraft were Pokemon and the blocks could be more than cube shaped, it'd be this game. However, the Pokemon do look kind of "cute", per say, and the Pokemon are pretty much done to scale. (For example, a first stage pokemon is the smallest, a second stage is bigger, a third stage Pokemon is even bigger, and a legendary is biggest.) Other than that, there is honestly not much to say about the graphics. For our day and age, they aren't great. Don't worry, this review gets better from here.
Sound: 8/10
Wow. That main menu music was amazing. Loud, fast and really has the feel of something epic. It set the stage for the rest of the game. The Battle Arena was also fast-paced and had a frantic feeling, which really added to when you were in a tough situation, on the brink of losing. All of the forests and beaches had light, carefree music, while all the towers, caves, and fiery areas had slow, mysterious, almost spooky music. It was spot on. Where the sound slightly fails, however, is when attacking. Sure, the vines from several attacks would make a cool slithering sound as they moved in on the enemy, but the general variation of sound effects seemed kind of lame. So, 8 of 10 seems like a pretty good score.
Addictiveness: 6/10
There are several things that add replay value to this game. One, you want to collect all the toy Pokemon from all the areas to complete your Champion team and complete your bestiary like collection for each area. The first time you complete the game, chan... Read the rest of this Review
