Castlevania - Aria of Sorrow

Nostalgia
Ah yes, another infamous Castlevania game.

Okay, lets get started.  First off the Castlevania Genre is intended for everyone.  Dracula's Castle is as sinister as he himself. The idea that the castle is searching for those it can manipulate whether it is a channel through which Dracula's soul operates is cunning and clever.  I was not overly impressed but somewhat amused by the intro to the protagonist/antagonists in this story.  Most of us have experienced some form of Castlevania throughout the years and have led the crusade through the eyes of a Belmont.  That also being said I do enjoy playing a classic game as a complete stranger. However, Symphony of the Night was my favorite.

Overall:

The reason I gave this game an 8 is due to the story line.  I believe that the plot was very interesting and could have been explored much more.  Part of the reason Castlevania games become so entrancing is the great attention to the story. You are re-creating one of the GREATEST stories of the twentieth century.  Letting users control a part of the legacy which is Dracula, not to mention we know he actually existed only adds to the fantasy of being involved with one of the most notorious men in history.  SO!!! Anyway, when a Castlevania game creates a new chapter I personally expect a little more than five characters who bump into each other five times for no apparent reason other than to give rhetorical questions.

Graphics:

The imagery and so forth are what you would expect from Castlevania.  Very imaginative and well created to fit what an evil castle should incorporate.  Top to bottom detail from dungeon to chimney.  As far as character , monster, weapon etc... I was fairly impressed.  Being that it is a Advance game I'm trying not to be overly critical because I know they have limited space ... Read the rest of this Review

Hmmm
This game differs much from its predecessor in many ways.  Overall the game is a lot of fun and the class and job abilities are very convenient which keeps it extremely addictive to fans of never-ending abilities. I myself cannot leave any stone unturned and their are many quests to complete. The graphics are negotiable being that its platform is limited but for what it does offer especially the totema attacks is quite sophisticated and beautiful. Adding a "esper" element was a good element to keep the game interesting. The sound.... horrible, I am trying not to be over critical but Final Fantasy games are renowned for their musical prowess. I was, in fact, a little more than disappointed.  Addictiveness however has me by the ahem... yea so....this game while not being overly in depth creates addictiveness by basically offering endless quests. I cannot seem to stop constantly up-grading, equipping, buying , selling etc.... very good for those who enjoy constant chaos and time tables. The story was a let down having played the PS version and how dramatic the roles were. Final Fantasy gamers myself mainly love the embellishment and prose if you will and it's charismatic personalities. Where are the sad exposes? The dramatic interludes? The fight of good versus evil is not exactly overwhelming but if you like less interference with that in your games then this one can satisfy you. The depth correlates directly to the story and then ironically does not according to addictiveness. The balance goes hand in hand. The difficulty? Ant avid gamer or FF fan should have no problems whatsoever with game, although I will cite that the equipment screens are hard to navigate when buying or using  new equipment and not being able to see the plus minus ratios unless you go back and forth from store to equip, kind of a pain in the butt really.  If you're into this game and have figured it out you'll know what I mean.

Parting shot;

Nostalgia
As a 28 year old man being able to play games I grew up to is captivating. FF3 raised me.  With out being dramatic I will say as an impressionable young boy who was a year round athlete and student I still had to set time aside (too much according to my mother) to purchase a case of mountain dew and spend an evening leveling my characters.  I think this is ubiquitous for most avid gamers but what I believe this game gave me that is unique is my own character.  I was in love with the story line to start, passionate heroes and menacing antagonists, plots and counter plots forks in the road and remote challenges as we all know is common now but back then..........lol I used to sleep with a plastic ax and dream  I was an esper. I digress and so what I meant by character was I took a little from most all of the ones in FF3.  Assertiveness and passion from Sabin, loyalty and devotion from Cyan, Arrogance and ingenuity from Edgar, street smarts and savvy from Locke, Duty and rational from Celes etc..... I even assimilated trouble and sadism from Kefka. Even through my teens you could compare my isolating habits or mood swings too shadow.  I know to embellish natural human development making it comprehensible to a video may seem immature but ill say as we model ourselves in society I personally see nothing wrong with learning human qualities from a make believe world. After all those of us who can say we've fallen in love with a game seem to capture a games essence with what its creators are trying to model about our real world.  FF3 I believe won awards for its soundtracks and any gamer who says they didn't water up when Cyan's family says for well on the ghost train is bs'in. There was a lot of drama in this game as well as creative plot twists which as a ten year old boy kept me a FF fan forever.
Thanks,
Dumptruck
