Crash Team Racing

Review of Crash Team Racing: Australian Karting At Its Finest
Continuing with my childhood memories, here's one of the best I've had: Crash Team Racing. What. A. Game. At least for me, apparently everyone in that epoch just wanted to know about Mario Kart, God knows why. I've always been fan of the more "obscure" titles, although CTR ain't that obscure, just somewhat underrated in my humble opinion. It did what most thought it was just possible to Mario: a platform character in a racing game. Yeah, many thought "oh, this is gonna flop, Crash isn't really suited for racing games, he's way better as a platformer". Surprisingly enough (at least for those kind of people), Naughty Dog managed to keep the very essence of Crash while changing the gameplay formula. Yes, it's a Crash racing game spin-off, but it's a Crash game all the way through.

[GRAPHICS] - 9/10

As usual with most PS1 games, CTR had gorgeous graphics, at least in my humble child eyes. Well, still up to today, but nowadays I do recognize some goofy things like... Crash's expression. I mean, yeah, it's Crash, but... I never noticed how "blocky" everyone was (which is understandable, due to the PS1 being pushed to its limits by these kind of games). So much for being a child back then. But it's good either way, the lush landscapes and tracks manage to compensate this. It feels like a Crash game nonetheless.

[SOUND] - 10/10

Ah the songs... there really isn't a song I don't like in this game, seriously. Some more, some less, but I like them all. Especially the world hub themes. I find it amazing how all of them are essentially "the same base song" but with different thematics, and they blend superbly while you change worlds, which is the best part IMO. Not even the PS1's audio compression can take the awesome away from Crash music. Among my favorites, Tiger Temple, Dragon Mines, Sewer Speedway (ooh boy that Crash 2 vibe) and the oh-so-wacky boss theme.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Review of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
I'm on a roll today! When you think a franchise can't get any better... Crash 1, Crash 2 and now the best of 'em, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped! Of all the PS1 games, Crash 3 is definitely my canon favorite, and I couldn't review it without reviewing the other two games first since, as games evolve, we tend to compare each other and it's a natural thing. Once again, Naughty Dog managed the impossible: taking something that's already perfect and sending it into god-like levels of perfection.

[STORY - 10/10]
I know it's an old game, but... spoiler alert, just in case. Crash 3 actually follows what would be the "alternate" ending to Crash 2 (the one where you get all the gems and stuff). Marvellous Dr. N. Brio gathers all the gems Crash collected in the last game and powers a laser beam that destroys Dr. N. Cortex's space station, the Cortex Vortex, which in turn falls down to Earth in pieces. One of the larger chunks falls down into an ancient monument, crashing it and releasing a black smoke which echoes "Free... at last..." in a sinister manner.

Back at N. Sanity Island, more specifically at Crash's home (which, until that point, I never thought he actually had a home), an evil laughter echoes through the air, and Aku-Aku seems concerned something terrible has happened. He tells everyone to get inside the house and tells them he has an evil brother named Uka-Uka, who was locked deep underground by himself to protect the world from his evil influence, however he is now free and must be stopped.Meanwhile, in an unknown place (which is later revealed to be called the "Time Twister"), it is shown Uka-Uka confronts a cowered-in-fear Cortex, telling him it's all his fault and that all of the planet's energy sources were depleted (crystals and gems). However, Uka-Uka decides to spare him since Cortex freed him from his prison, and introduces him to a new character: Dr. Nefarious Tropy, master of time and creator of the "Time Twister" machine. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Review of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
After the huge success Crash Bandicoot was, a sequel comes in. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. An awesome approach for a game title, as well as an awesome sequel to an already great game. Crash 2 pushed new boundaries, introduced new things, and (thank God) fixed some issues the last game had. I believe Crash 2 was the canon one I played the most (I used to play CTR a lot more, but since it's a spin-off I had to divide), had such good times with it. So let's get to it.

[STORY - 9/10]
Following the (normal) ending of Crash 1, where Crash had a final fight with Dr. Neo Cortex on his blimp, Crash won and Cortex fell on the island, crashing through a cave and finding a shining purple crystal there, laughing maniacally while a comic relief happens where his match loses its light and he shouts a comical "D'oh!". One year has passed and Cortex is seen inside the Cortex Vortex, orbiting Earth, discussing his plans with Dr N. Gin, a physicist who serves as his assistant/right-hand. Cortex plans to suck the energy out of the purple crystal he found to power the Cortex Vortex, but N. Gin tells him that's not enough, as they need 25 smaller crystals to reach full power.

Cut to Earth, Crash is sleeping alongside his sister, Coco, which seemingly came out of nowhere since the first game never mentioned her (I personally used to believe she was Tawna but younger, believe it or not), who was using her laptop when suddenly the batteries were dead and she asked Crash to get new ones (I actually didn't understood this part as a child, had to search it up). Crash then went deep into the forest when he reaches an altar and gets abducted to a strange place (which is called "Warp Room" in-game). There, Cortex shows up as a hologram and somehow tricks Crash into believing he's trying to save the world, begging him for help to find crystals on his way and bring them to him. Shortly after, a hologram of Dr. N. Brio appears, telling Crash to look for gems in... Read the rest of this Review

Review of Crash Bandicoot: The Marsupial That Started It All
Ah, Crash. One of my first contacts with the gaming world, and certainly one of the best. I was just a little kiddo back then but as I always say in my reviews (actually this being the first one where I make such a metaphor), the PlayStation 1 for me is like giving a stuffed animal to a newborn: he/she'll latch onto it and will never let it go. And I felt I was just taking too much time to review my second favorite franchise of all time (first one being OddWorld, third one being good ol' "Sanic"), and it was Sunday morning at the time I was writing this so I thought "eh, why not? It's my only free day on the week after all".

[STORY - 9/10]
So. Crash Bandicoot. Some call it "Sonic's Ass Game". The one that started it all. An Australian marsupial, one of many critters captured by Dr. Neo Cortex, a mad scientist planning on creating an army of super animals to take over the world, with the help of his assistant/rival, Dr. Nitrus Brio, who created the Evolvo-Ray (which I really had no clue at all that it had a name until now, I had to quick-search for it), a machine capable of buffing up intelligence and physical capabilities of any animal. The critters would pass through this "forced evolution" and then be submitted to the Cortex Vortex, a mind-controlling device created by Cortex himself. Crash would be the first one to pass through this experience.

Perfect plan, ain't it? Heh. Go figure. Crash was successfully evolved, but no one expected the brainwashing failed. Cortex then threw Crash at the window as if it was "garbage", and continued the experiment. As Crash was going to be thrown, he met Tawna, a "Jessica Rabbit-esque" female bandicoot. Waking up at N. Sanity Island, at the shore, Crash then starts his adventure to stop Cortex and rescue Tawna.

Two things to consider:

1. Them names. Seriously, I liked the way almost every name in the franchise starts with an "N.", then when you get the full name of those characters, every... Read the rest of this Review
Rayman 2: The Great Escape

Review of Rayman 2 TGE: Good Things Never Die
Many people's first PS1 game usually is anything Crash Bandicoot. Mine was Rayman 2, Crash came to my life later on. As far as I recall, I even played a PC demo before this, but as a kid I never understood why the PC version felt so different from the PS1 version. Regardless, the PS1 one is the one I love the most. Having played the re-release on the PS2 (called Rayman 2 Revolution), this is still true 'till today: the PS1 Rayman 2 is and always will be my favorite.

[GRAPHICS] - 10/10
I don't know if it's all thanks to PS1's processing power or whatnot, but damn is this game vibrant. And colorful. Its artistic aspect is just beautiful enough for me to say "this game doesn't need anything else". Even with today's technology allowing us to do even greater things, Rayman's style is truly unique. Right at the main menu (in PS1 version's case) you get a glance of what you're diving into: lush landscapes, places that could only have been crafted inside a fantasy novel, everything has a "mystic" feeling, which is pretty awesome. Speaking of "mystic", that also applies to another area of the game:

[SOUND] - 10/10
Enchanting. I could wrap it up here but I don't want to :3
Rayman 2 has gorgeous musics. A couple of them could even make me cry, I bet. There's a bit of everything: chill ambients to industrial madness to funky tunes and something that could've come from a thriller detective movie, to tribal, jungly and groovy goodness, also creepy-maybe-to-the-point-of-shit-yourself-a-bit styles and a side of epic final battle badass rock, this game's got you covered for (almost) everything when it comes to soundtrack. This is pretty much the first thing I remember about Rayman whether I think about it. My favorite tracks go from Clark's theme to the songs that play when you're in a flying barrel. There's no way not to love the OST, it almost feels atemporal.
