Final Fantasy III (english translation)
08-14-13 02:34 PM
One of the most pure turned based fantasy RPGs. For RPG enthusiasts only.
Final Fantasy III, "the real" one, should be differentiated from Final Fantasy VI, which was released in North America as Final Fantasy III for the SNES. This review is about Final Fantasy III as it was released in Japan, played on the NES platform.

Before I begin, this was my very first RPG, and so I am likely biased towards it, as it shaped what I think a "good" RPG should be. But here it goes. I have since replayed it.

Graphics: 9/10

Very adequate. I didn't notice them being unbelievably good for the NES, but they we certainly not bad. Also, the character detail was very well done, where little 8-bit sprites where very recognizable from one another.

One thing I loved about this game is the use of the side view and not a first person perspective. It really helped you understand what was going on. Another great features was the fact that with every attack you could actually see the designed specific weapon swung at the enemy; impressive for such an old game with so many weapons.

Sound: 8/10

Very adequate again. The sound effects were right on, letting you know what was going on with no trouble. The music was as expected from a Final Fantasy title, very good. At a few times, I did find the music a little annoying; as such it did not get a 9/10.

Addictiveness: 10/10

Here is where I may be a little biased. As it was my first RPG, I thought it was the best thing I had ever played. However, objectively speaking: this game requires lot's of grinding, which many find addicting. There are always new baddies, and always new and interesting bosses.

Story: 8/10

The story was ALMOST amazing. It had a lot of potential, and I think with a few more paragraphs of script could really have made a perfect score. I will not summarize the story here as to avoid any spoilers, but suffice to say it was a good fantasy story.

Depth: 10/10

The world map in this game was awesome. You p... Read the rest of this Review
Excitebike

A great feeling game at it's simplest
Excite Bike is a 2.5D side scrolling dirt-bike racing game. It's object is to race through a tract as quickly as possible (surprise). The faster you make it through the tract, the better you place (1st, 2nd, 3rd...). Winning involves not only switching between the four lanes in a quick reflexive manner, but primarily making it over a verity of jumps, ramps, bumps, and other obstacle as smoothly as possible... without wiping out!

This game has found the near perfect balance of simplicity and enjoyment. Let me explain.

The controls and gameplay are possibly one of the most natural and intuitive I've ever come across in a racing game, while staying interesting and innovative. As opposed to simply dodging left and right, like some many other NES racing games, this one requires you to jump ramps the most effective way possible. In doing so, you soon develop a "feel" for the bike and tract.  This "feel" must then be worked on if you wish to truly master the game. This makes for a very balance learning curb; a newcomer will enjoy it as much as a veteran. There are two modes of racing, solo or against an infinite amount of competitors. You can run them of the road, but watch out! It is a two edged sword. This does add some fun to the game for the more competitive playing, but don't change the mechanic or gameplay very much.

The graphics are simple, yet very easy on the eyes and understandable. The isn't too much going on like some other NES or SNES games that "try to hard". It's no Super Mario Bros. 3, but is very sufficient for it's purpose.

Like the graphics, the sound, is very simple and subtle. It is not annoying and ambiguous, but each event has an easily heard and memorable sound. The music isn't highly addicting, but still very adequate.

The depth and difficulty is where it is lacking a little. While it is challenging at first to win 1st place in all races, it can be accomplished after a moderate amount of dedication... Read the rest of this Review
