Final Fantasy III - Eternal Crystals Review by: Geicen - 9.2/10
A Solid Hack and Worth the Time to Play. Okay, I've been a huge fan of Final Fantasy for a long time. It was the
first game I ever played when I was little (or at least watched my brother play...I couldn't read but it was fun to watch). One of my
favorite games in the series has always been, however, Final Fantasy VI
(III in the US). So when I saw this hack and some of the pictures, I was
a little put off.
"Hey!" I said "Why would you mess with an
already great game?! I mean, unless Leo is still alive or you can play
as someone else...well..." and after reading the description of the
game, I wasn't sure what to think.
This game was the start of
Square's departure from pure Fantasy and adding in Steam-punk and Sci-Fi
elements. The games began to take a turn, and it was a refreshing and
interesting change. So, looking a this hack I wasn't exactly sure how I
was feeling about it, but I decided to take a quick look.
And I was surprised!
GRAPHICS 8
I grant Graphics a 8 because I love the graphics of the original FFVI, It
was ahead of its time and utilized the Super Nintendo to the it's
limit. This in mind, looking at some of the sprite changes causes me to
feel a bit put off. Changing Edgar's sprite to Kain's (More of Less) and Cyan's as well (I'm not going to spoil it, you'll see what I mean) just seemed a bit unneeded. In fact, a lot of sprites are changed, some to
great effect and then others that don't really make that much sense.
But, once you get passed that, you end up looking at it and feeling like
it's second nature. Basically, it works, but it doesn't. But I digress, don't let THIS stop you from playing the game, please, keep reading.
SOUND 10
I
grant the Sound a 10 because it's exactly the same. A few changes but
they aren't glaring and they actually work with the feel of the game, so
a perfect score for this one!
ADDICTIVENESS 9
As with the original Final Fantasy VI, strategy is one of the reasons you
play this game. You can make the game harder or easier depending on what
characters you decide to take with you into battle. With so many
character selections (Even two SURPRISES Which I TOTALLY didn't see coming!!) the game becomes even more challenging and, in that aspect,
even more fun. I have been playing this game for a while now, and I
really cannot put it down. Every time I come to Vizzed this is where I
instantly go.
STORY 10
Final Fantasy games are well known for the story lines they present.Lets
be frank, if you're playing this game, you should have played the original before this, so the original story will come as no surprise,
but hold on to your pants everyone, because the changes made to the story are SOLID and the WORK!
Usually, when one begins to play with and distort a storyline of Final
Fantasy it doesn't always have positive results. This is where that
statement is wrong. The story blends seamlessly with other Final
Fantasy games and allows you to still feel the nostalgic feel of the
original Final Fantasy VI. I am actually fully invested in the story,
and I loved it from beginning to end.
DEPTH 10
Like
the original Final Fantasy VI it will take you a long time to complete
the game (unless you're trying to do a speed through, which I really
don't recommend). With two worlds to explore and side quests all over,
you'll have hours upon hours of game play here.
DIFFICULTY 8
Why
is Difficulty the lowest score in this review? Well, here's the thing,
to a seasoned Final Fantasy player, most of what happens come as no surprise, but even to a seasoned player the game still adds a bit of
difficulty. Bosses and monsters are harder than in the original and the
game play causes you to really think before
you enter a battle. "Did I bring the right characters? Who's going to die the most? Do I have a few Phoenix (spelled Fenix in the game) Downs?
Was milk a bad choice?" things like that (Minus the milk thing). The game gives you a lot to work with, and a lot of challenge, but it's not so hard that you can't win.
OVERALL 9.2
The game scores a 9.2 in my book, and I will continue playing, since I'm
so close to the end I see no reason to stop now! So I implore you to
pick this game up and try it, You will not be disappointed, that much I
will tell you with the utmost certainty.
