Revenge of the Shinobi Review Zircron Swift
Ninja games, you gotta love 'em. Jumping off walls, throwing shurikens at the enemy, performing feats of unimaginable and impossible skill....yep, they are normally awesome games were you get to do what ninjas are known to do best. But some games don't execute this well. I have yet to see a ninja game not work well when it is a platformer, and I don't think I'll ever see one. If you want to make a game, make it about ninjas, your sure to have a gem right there.....so long as you do it right. Yet, I fear and dread a certain ninja game for the Sega Genesis (Ha! I finally got it right! Take that seemingly hard but relatively easy to understand when you learn about it system). The Revenge of the Shinobi! After playing the games for this system, the graphics and game play seemed cheap (apart from Street Fighter, Gunstar Heros and Mortal Kombat), although the music was pretty good. Oh come on *causally waving an arm* it's a ninja game, how could it possibly be bad? Lets put our outfit on, grab a sword or two, and a controller as we look into Revenge of the Shinobi....sorry, I'll need that controller ifI am to review this game *takes controller off your hands*
So the story is that the world is at peace after a Ninja defeated the army of Neo Zeed. But three years later the Neo Zeed came back with an even stronger army, he killed your master and kidnapped your sweetheart. You have vowed to defeat every last on of his minions and bring an end to his plans of him taking over the world. Simple story. No magical artifacts? No secret sword? No hidden art or magic which the ninja can preform? Oh, you do? Ninjutsu? Well, I take that back. In this game, you have magical powers which all ninjas have, which is Ninjutsu. It's basically your special attack. But you get to choose from four! that's pretty sweet. A special attack for every occasion. Too bad there's no "Arrive on time to work" Ninjutsu. You get a fire Ninjutsu, which sends pillars of fire to scorch your opponent, a thunder Ninjutsu, which makes you invincible to every attack for a certain amount of time, a.....bouncy Ninjutsu...? This doubles your jumping abilities.... ok...and finally, an explosive Ninjutsu?!? What? A Ninjutsu so you can blow yourself up? I thought ninjas were meant to be silent and stealthy. Not very stealthy if suddenly you decide to blow up in someones face. This uses up a life.
As you start the game, you'll notice that you'll have a number of shuriken. You can throw these with the attack button when your not close to the enemy. You can double jump (yay ^^) but you can't wall jump (awww, =< what a shame). The double jump isn't even much of a double jump. You just sort of spin around and you go a little higher. But you can do something awesome during that time. If you try and throw a shuriken, you'll throw eight instead! It'll use up eight shruikens, but it looks damn cool. Also good when your fighting several enemies. When you are close, you use melee attacks (kicking and using a weapon) depending on weather you are crouching or standing. Now, all this sounds really cool and fun, but when you play it, that's when it's true colours shine. For starters, it's a little slow-paced. It looks like you are just casually walking through the level like "hey, there's a guy with a sword that wants to kill me. No biggy." Jumping is ok, but preforming the double jump is a bit of a pain, as you need to do it on the top of your jump. No ifs or buts. You either double jump for height, or you don't at all. In other games that have double jump, you could do that second jump whenever you like, no matter how close you are to the ground. That adds alevel of freedom that adds a lot to the game play. Here, they didn't think about it.
Another thing is why do all the enemies explode when they are defeated? Do they know the exploding Ninjutsu as well? Maybe they all preform it, but die just as they are about to unleash it. But then, why do the dogs explode? They surely can't know Ninjutsu....*screws up paper and chucks it behind his back, then I turn around* Damn! I missed.....hey, my theories on the obscure logic of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when i did the review. *unscrews* "Everyone is bomb proof. Bomb man runs away when placing bomb. Why?" Ahhh, good times. *screws it up and chucks it behind his back* but I digress. The enemies are what I would have expected. There are samurais that can deflect your attacks, so you have to hit them while they are attacking, grunt ninjas that jump and throw stuff at you, and dogs....are just dogs...
You can smash crates for goodies. Such as more shurikens, extra lives, more Ninjutsu power, more powerful weapons and....what's this? Looks interesting, it's rectangular, got some wires on the outside. Might be armour. Ah, I can't seem to pick it up *box starts to flash* It's flashing, is that a good thing *box explodes*. Oh come on! Ninjas. Don't. Use. Explosives! What makes you think that *someone whispers in my ear* t-this bad guy isn't a ninja? What? Uses his beard to attack? Don't be silly. Well, this "Neo Zeed" isn't a ninja, so I will let him off for that with his traps and exploding guards. Sorry man.
Now this game is hard. When ever you die, you go back to the start of the level, which is annoying, given the low health and abundance of enemies. You are also given pretty much no recovery time, so you better be good at how you attack your enemy. Not that hard, but the game play is rather annoying. A thing they got right was the bamboo, which seems to resemble spikes in this game (the first level). This is one of the few games that spikes injure you, rather than kill you as you ever so slightly brush your hand on one. I got to a boss fight, but could not land a hit on the guy. He seemed invincible. I tried attacking from above, attacking while he attacked, trying to attack his back....nothing. Ninjutsu seems the only thing that works. I tried the exploding one on my last life....wasn't such a smart move =P
Overall, I give this game a 6.6/10 This game seems terrible to me. The graphics are far too gloomy and grim, but he is a ninja, and ninjas normally travel during night. The music seems repetitive and boring, but not all that bad. The game play, though, is a mystery. I don't know what they did. They somehow turned everything that seemed awesome, and stripped half of it's potential away, and then some. I think it's due to the fact it is slower paced than the other ninja games. Ninja Gaiden was a fast-paced action game were you could wall jump, required awesome skill to complete and above all, fast-paced. You don't get the rush of adrenaline like you do with the other games. But that's just me. I can see that this game is much loved by fans. So with that, I must combined the theories of explosion of this game and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to see if I can see why people aren't affected by bombs....

Now this is a ninja game! Fattie54
I have a Mega Drive at home and you cannot imagine how much I play this game. It's perfect! You get an awesome story line, great game play and some other stuff. I will start with the story first. This is NOT one of those sappy save the princess stories, by the way! The story goes a little something like this: You are a ninja named Joe Musashi who defeated an evil crime ring known as Zeed, but they reformed as a new crime ring called Neo Zeed and got their revenge by kidnapping your love and killing your tribe leader. Your tribe leader, with dying breaths, told you to avenge him and save your girl. You then set off to hunt down the new crime ring known as Neo Zeed. The thing I like about the story is the fact that when I think about it, I can visualize what's going down. It's also a serious and epic story. Some people nowadays may disagree, but compared to the sappy save the princess stories, this rocks. 9/10 Everyday of mine goes something like this: Wake upCheck VizzedBrush teethPlay this game Not only is this game so much fun, I think the thing that makes us want to play over and over again is to complete the game. This game is brutally difficult yet so much fun. 10/10 I used a transitional sentence. No one recognized? Anyways, this game is not hard is a bad way or too easy. It's like Fattie54 and the 3 types of difficulty. The last one is just right! The challenge is everywhere; At the beginning of the game, you fought samurais and fluorescent ninjas or whatever. Then as you moved up, army soldiers and bulky dudes with flamethrowers and attack dogs came into the fight. After that, I lost track. The craziest thing are the bosses. Some rumors say the second boss is Spider Man. I though that was hogwash until I saw the opening screen. It said "Marvel Comics Spider Man 1990 and stuff!" The bosses are the most craziest things! A huge samurai, The Terminator...?, Spidey, A train, and some other ones. Oh yeah, the last boss is Willow Smith. He flips his hair back and forth and launches it at you, then regenerates it. Man, I wish I could do that after a bad haircut. I'm getting off topic. So the difficulty: Just right. 8/10 You know a soundtrack for a game rocks when you carry it on your MP3. The music in this game varies from a lot of genres, like you got some groovy music, THE 16-bit rock jam, Chinese music, some sappy CALM music ( ha-ha just kidding; it sounds awesome! ), and some good piano music. So for the soundtrack I give it my all points! Did I type that right? 10/10 I hate it when people say Genesis graphics aren't good. They may not be able to make them as good as we want. Also, SNES was made WAY after the Genesis. I like the Genesis graphics better because they look more realistic then the Super Nintendo, which looks like a unicorn just barfed a rainbow on the screen. It's just a BIT too cartoon-like and colorful. Anyways, the graphics for this game aren't that good to be honest, but they are still good. 8/10This game has 2 more in the series on the Genesis, and they all rock. This one doesn't offer the most, the third one offers more. It's got horse riding, wall jumps, and surfing...that seems a bit ripped off from TMNT. Probably not. Anyways, you can do an awesomely high double jump and throw 8 throwing daggers diagonally downwards and rain hell! You can also get power ups and change from throwing daggers..to fireballs! How does he store them in his pocket though? That must BURN LIKE A MOTHER FUC- ANYWAYS, you can also change from melee daggers to a big a** sword! However, one box you break open is not a power up. It's a mine.... that looks like a camera. The best move in your arsenal is the Ninjitsu. You have the Ninjitsu of Kariu, that summons 5 pillars of fire and inflict lots of pain, Ninjitsu of Fushin, that makes you jump REEEEAAALYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY HIGH, Ninjitsu of Ikazuchi ( Or Ikasushi- Ika- Oh forget about it.), a shield of lightning that will break after about 6 hits and finally the most powerful one. The Ninjitsu of Hijin, which is like Goku's Kao-Ken or Kamakazi. You cause a lot of pain while you take pain. In other words you BLOW UP!!! You lose a life by using it twice, I think. Or something like that. I dunno. Anyways the rating here is a full 10 baby! 10/10 ( In case you didn't see before..)I guess that is the conclusion of my review. ( I'm into fancy wordplay now. Pumpernickel!) So I hope you read the rest of my reviews and have a good lifetime.P.S: The reason I say lifetime is because some people read at day, evening, dawn, dusk, night and all that stuff. So lifetime clarifies all of those! (Still into fancy word play!)

One of the hardest games I owned LilGB
Revenge of the shinobi a game I owned & could never beat stage 7.
Graphics: They look great for the era, areas, enemies & Musashi look good despite it being dated now. I liked the details for some stages like the waterfalls, high way etc.
Sound: 10 Composed by Yuzo Koshiro, the person who also did the streets of rage & Dragon slayer soundtracks, it sounds great that you'll want to turn it up, especially the boss music.
Replayability: I did replay it a few times to get the better ending & look for hidden crates for power ups as they're hidden in each area.
Story:5 It's pretty basic, you're Joe Musashi & Neo Zeed has kidnapped your girlfriend Naoko who you have to save going through 8 stages.
Difficulty:10 It's a solid game with difficult jumps, enemies, obstacles that can instantly kill you or the knock back which is as bad as in Castlevania.
You'll be dying a lot to reach the end goal because you mistimed a jump or got overwhelmed by enemies or trying to figure out the bosses attack patterns, especially later ones.
Each stage has a couple of areas to go through before you fight a boss, they start off pretty short but later stages you'll be trying to get past each one quickly or look for hidden crates to get health or shurikens.
I admit I used the infinite shuriken cheat since you will run out quickly.
I'm glad I was able to find it on here & finish it which I didn't get the chance to do in my youth.
I'd recommend this game & it's sequel Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master. I'd love a sequel or a HD remaster/ remake of these games.
