Tetris is a life Skill   Zircron Swift
Some games are better left simple. But some games are too simple, making them boring. Some games are better with a certain depth of complexity in them, but the learning curve might be too steep, and many might stop playing. There are few games out there that I can hardly stop playing when I pick up. One that perfectly matched simplicity with addictiveness was Tetris. Ah yes, I remember it as if it were yesterday....I was at a car boot sale, and I saw a Game Boy and a couple of games for a fiver. It was my first retro gaming console. And with it, Tetris. You could play the game, and days could pass without you knowing. How could such a simple game become to popular and addictive without becoming boring? Lets have a look.
The game, as the cover suggests, is Russian Themed, with quite Russian music and some Russian buildings behind the Tetris title screen. I hope you like Russia, because this game is full of it. Just need to play it in the snow and you have the Russian Experience right there. The story is....wait, there is no story? Well, in a way, that's a good thing. Could you imagine the silly story Tetris could have?
"The evil Tetrius has waged war against Russia by sending different shaped blocks to destroy the place! You, the hero with huge physic abilities, but move the blocks as they fall into a neat 2D wall. If the wall is wide enough, you can destroy these blocks and leave room for more to add to this wall. Do what you can until the Russians....um.....can build a space ship to destroy the evil Tetrius once and for4 all! But be careful not to build the wall too high. If you do, it'll collapse, crushing you underneath it!"
Just imagine the cut-scenes it would have....
*after level 1*
Hero: Your not going to win, Tetrius.
Tetrius: I think I will, when I send more blocks at a slightly faster speed!
*after level 2*
Hero: Your not succeeding, Tetrius.
Tetrius: Watch me send more blocks at an ever sightlier faster rate than before!
See? But I'm digressing. As you start, you have a choice between two modes: Mode A and Mode B. After that, you get to choose three different songs to listen while you play. You even get a preview of the song, how nice. Mode A is your basic game play. You arrange the blocks that fall into a neat wall. When the wall is filled up to the sides (with no holes in the middle), those lines then disappear, and you have more room to place more blocks. The more lines that disappear at once, the more points you get. Clearing four lines at once is called a Tetris. You can press A to rotate one way, and B to rotate the other way. You can press down to speed up the block falling down (but it doesn't work the other way =P). In fact, you gain some points if you press down before the block naturally hits the ground, depenmding on how far it went down. When you clear ten lines, you advance a level. The next level is slightly faster than the previous level. At first, you don't notice a thing, but when you get to level 9, you'll notice that your struggling slightly to keep up. If the levels are too easy for you, then try holding select at the title screen and continue to hold it until you start playing. There you go, faster levels now (can be easily reset by turning off the game and turning it back on). You can choose the level you want here, from level 0-9. You can also press select in game to hide what block will come next, to add a bit of challenge.
Mode B is for more of a puzzle and challenge for those who want it. It's basicly the same as Mode A, only once you clear 25 lines, the game ends. You can choose the level of your game level 0-9 once again, but you can also choose a height of 0-5. 0 being normal and 5 being over half the screen covered with random blocks placed there. When you clear your 25 lines, your score gets counted up, depending on how many you cleared at a time. It's hard to get a high score here as you are limited to how many lines you can clear. But not as addictive as Mode A, I must admit.
The music is quite calming to listen to, to be honest. My favorite being Theme 01. But the others aren't half bad. The game over music and the title music is also very nice to listen to. The graphics are about as simple as you can get. The best of it is the title screen, to be blunt. One problem with this game is your building these walls, and you get the same block five or six times very quickly, and your going to stack them on top of each other. Then you get that piece again and decide "this is ridiculous", and place it over the place you've been waiting to put a long one in for a Tetris. And then a couple of moves later, you get the piece you wanted a moment ago! Which puts a damper on your plans to get rid of this towering wall. I suppose it's all part of the game play. Don't you love irony? Another thing I'm not quite sure of is when you get a game over. There is a message "Game Over, Better luck next time" with a heart next to it. Why is there a heart? What does it mean? Is the game hitting on me? For what ever reason, it's probably better not to know.
Overall, I give this game a 9.2/10 Although it is a very simple game, it's a very addicting one at that. The music and game play really makes what this game is. It's a game that feeds off human life bit by bit, by the hour and by the day, and even by the week if it's lucky. This game could be the death of you, but look on the bright side. it's a life skill. You can use your Tetris skills when packing stuff in the fridge, the car, and even tiding your room. But it won't get rid of the items column by column. Well, if you haven't started already, play the game. It'll provide hours of entertainment. Just don't let that Tetruis win the battle of Russia and Blockonia....

time for your tetris shot   ThanatosUnraveld
Its a me a Tetris, you know Tetris that one game that for some odd reason has not been ported to every game system but also every mobile device known to man heck its even built into some calculators (if I ever make a game and its not put into a calculator then what's the point of trying.) Its Tetris, Tetris, Tetris, Tetris no matter how much more I say all I can say is Tetris and you all know what pops up first in your mind that might be a good thing that might be a bad thing either way its time to do a review of one of the most simplistic games next to breathing.
So what is the first thing you think about when you think about Tetris well the amazing Graphics right? (no just me?) Well it does have some form of graphics and its called blocks lots and lots of blocks and that is really all that Tetris has to offer in terms of eye goggling (that's a term word) and its sadly not the only thing that brings the 'beauty' of this game down its the fact that it was released on the Gameboy not the Gameboy color or the Gameboy advance its the original bulky black and white Gameboy so as said before the only two colors the system has to offer is black and white. Now I'm not hating on the Gameboy but I think it kind of stunts this games ability in terms of diversity when it comes to visuals and I know there is multiple versions of this game but I'm looking at this one at the moment and after a while black and white just well looks boring. Even though Tetris is all about blocks and blocks and more blocks it does what it can with them and makes them look like blocks so it gets a 3 out of 10.
So how's that charming Gameboy Sound eh? Well its a charming Gameboy sound (eh) the theme that plays when you are playing Tetris is a classic theme and for good reason I mean after a while of hearing it you just (sigh) looooove it why because they done did it right how did they done did it right Not sure but they did do, done did it right (understood that? good)and of course its not just the music that sounds good the sound effects are something to hear too be it the sound of turning the blocks (yes blocks make sounds as they turn in mid air don't ja know) to the sound of getting multiple rows in a row this sound track and sound effect is just so classic that you have to love it (lies) and its so simple that its hard to find something bad about it, except for the fact that the main theme can get really annoying after a while. After hearing the same theme for 20 minutes I think ill give the Sound a 9 out of 10.
Just how Addictive can a game be where a unknown being rains blocks down onto you and you mist spin them till you get them the way you want them then set them down and watch a group of them go bye bye? Well pretty addictive if I do say so myself (which I can cuz the da reviewer) for someone who had not ever played Tetris (there are people out there called infants and grandparents) Tetris sounds and kind of looks boring and well I'm not going to lie it can be at times but when you get the blocks down like a master and the speed, speeds up that game is the only thing that matters right then and it feels good, that is until that one t block knows you out of your Zen then you realize your boss is yelling at you for not working and etc. And that is really all there is to say Tetris is not one of those if it looks boring it is, its the simplicity that once again gives it its charm and fun factor so saying all of that ill give the Addictive factor a 9 out of 10.
Next up is the Story HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!! what story (im sure fanfic.com has some backstory but I'm noting going to even go there) so here's my story you are a special space galaxy defender and those blocks are aliens and they want to teach us geometry OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now its time to see how far down these blocks will go (to the bottom of the screen to be exact) so the Depth of a game involving blocks falling cant be the least deeper thing if it tried (but I'm sure that sentence could have tried harder) so sadly this game ONCE AGAIN is simple but this time it works against it you put blocks down and that's it sure there is some strategy but I think the blocks are random in this version (I think some ports make the blocks fixed don't quote me on that) so it might be all about luck and how much of it you have that day. So even though this game is simple this is proof that too simple can be to bad because this Depth is getting a shallow score of 2 out of 10.
Now this part is going to be a roughly out of 10 thing why because the Difficulty of Tetris gets this goes up as you play (ya I know mind blown right) but what I mean is that one minute you could be safely putting blocks down then you sneeze and suddenly its like trying to land a meteor and its all about how quick you are with your thumbs and brain so the difficulty is different for everyone who plays this game. SO even though I did put a 10 out 10 way up yonder its really a ~10 out of 10 it might be lower for you or (somehow) higher for others.
Did you know that you move blocks in Tetris and did you also know it was made in Russia that's why you can see Russia in the background of the title screen (and you thought that it was just a completely random thind didn't you? Don't lie to me I know you did) so even if you have played Tetris I implore you to pick it up sometime and sit down and enjoy a game that someone made because they wanted to do something when they are bored at there job (look it up Tetris has a oddly interesting story behind it, it involves aliens and space defenders and Russia of course) but all in all ill give Tetris a final score of 8.5 out of 10.

Tetris   Redrunelord
People throughout their lives often question the purpose of life, and wonders why they are actually in a form of existence in this world. Some humans, such as the people who wrote the film "City Slickers" had a solid idea of what the meaning of life was (the one thing). Other humans got absolutely no concept of why they are here, and toils away endlessly hoping that good fortunate shall decide to bestow itself upon them. Entire fields of study have been established around this simply complex question and they all have various theorems that are accepted to various degrees. The discussions about the meaning of life could toil on endlessly, bearing little fruit for life does end eventually. Some people feels that this toil is what life is: a continuous struggle until bad luck, a few bad decisions or simply time turns against you, ending the mortal existence once and for all. This concept eerily mirrors a single game that has crept its way into Nintendo's hands, and the gaming world: Tetris.
Tetris is an easily dismissed asexual micro organism: it appears small and can easily fly under the radar and implant itself wherever it should desire, with a few exceptions due to bad climate. This bacteria has spread onto virtually every console, and most certainly the major ones, onto most to all handheld systems, most portable phones, and a plethora of online versions. It is a bacteria that, even when someone tries to kill, has firmly settled somewhere else in a great enough quantity that it shall survive most unpleasant events that be fall upon it. However, is this a good bacteria, that strengthens the immune system, or a disease that will destroy humanity?
Tetris is essentially a game in which, for those who have overlooked its existence in blissfulness, is a game in which you controls a series of tetrominos (four blocks joined together to create a shape such as a 1 by 4 rectangle or a 2 by 2 square) that falls to the bottom of a bucket. The player's goal is to form lines from the tetrominos by arranging and turning them to score points that way, and to stop the bucket from overflowing:once it overflows, it is game over. Much like a bacteria, this is a very simple concept, and makes the game easy to pick up and play. The controls are, as well, very simple with only right/left directional buttons/keys and a key to turn the tetrominos, which improves the game play.
Graphically speaking, the only adequate term that could be conveyed impartially towards the game's style is simple. The graphics are extremely simple, with absolutely no outstanding features. In later ports of this game, there would be intricate designs made around the bucket, and attempts made to add an unique edge to a largely familiar game, but the style largely remains the same inside the bucket. As far as functionality goes, it is perfect in that the player could distinguish what needs to be done. Often it can be difficult, especially at higher speeds, to distinguish where a block will fall which is a huge part of the game's challenge: to test a player's judgement skills. The audio is nothing special, but the tune does work for the game. If you want to have a Tetris melody playing, however, but in a different style, turn "The Complete History of the Soviet UNION Through the Eyes of a Humble Worker Arranged to the Melody of Tetris" on loop and play that way. That is the full title of the song, yes, but it can improve Tetris performance.
Tetris, among all of its simplicity, suffers from two flaws which may either deter a gamer, or pull them in and infect them. The first is the largely random nature of the tetrominos. This could be a problem because even a highly skilled player's entire game will depend on what pieces they are given in what order. If you are given a large number of a certain block (say s blocks) when you need another piece could end a game no matter how skilled the player is. On the contrary, the game could be made way too easy by receiving an unnatural plethora of pieces that happens to fit together perfectly. This trait is not completely negative, however, because the random nature tests how the player reacts to varying situations.
The second trait that can hurt this game is that, despite its addictive nature, it could prove highly redundant and repetitive as you are continuously building a wall and trying to make it disappear. Whether this is positive or negative depends entirely on how the player takes it: either it may grow boring quickly, or it may prove immensely appealing and entrails the player.
All in all, this particular port of Tetris has few major differences compared to other ports at the time, so this particular assessment is largely applicable across systems. How the game is presented and what modes are offered depends entirely on the port, but the bottom line is that it is the same game building the same wall to disappear. This port don't have a plethora of features but it is still the same game at the end of the day, and after arranging the blocks has grown wearisome to the soul.
So, the final verdict: is this game a bacteria that deserves to be exterminated, or is it a bacteria that could be used to make good cheese? This one is largely subjective, so the best thing to do is to play for half an hour one day and decide yourself if you are progressing further along and enjoying the experience, or arranging the blocks in toil. Roads are fairly common metaphors for life, but this game is one in itself: is it a metaphor for your life however? That is for the player to decide at the end of a day of arranging blocks.

One word: Addicting   gamerforlifefor..
Tetris for the game boy color came out in 1989 and has sold over 35 million copies worldwide. It was a huge success but is it a great game? I'll let you know by making this review.
Story; Tetris has no story so I'm leaving that blank
Graphics: There are much better looking games for the game boy but it's not bad. For that reason I give the graphics a 5.
Sound: Tetris' soundtrack is amazing because of Type A. Type A honestly is one of the best pieces of music for a gameboy game and is better than some Gameboy color and even some GBA music. The rest of the soundtrack is good but Type A alone gives me the perfect reason to give the sound a 10.
Addictiveness: Tetris is one of the most addicting puzzle games I've ever played. It's so much fun you'll want to play the game over and over again and improve your score. For that reason this game has tremendous replay value. For those reasons I give addictiveness a 10.
Story: Tetris has no story so I'm leaving that blank.
Depth: This game could've had more depth. Fortunately there's enough to make this game get a depth score of 7.
Difficulty: This game is challenging but it starts off kinda easy. For that reason I give the difficulty a 6.
Overall: Tetris for the game boy is a great puzzle game that everyone should play. It's so addicting and it'll make you want to keep playing the game over and over. I give the overall score an 8.5.

The daughter of the Queen of tetris makes her Castle   RMJEtheReploid
As a kid growing, i played tetris on the Nintendo 64 with my mother and i always lost :p but now when we play i win some, she wins some. bu enought Nintendo Tetris, this is the Game Boy and we know what that means. The B-Theme? No. A review! I am going to review one of the popular Block games!
Graphics: 8. Like i said in a review once, everyone is used to Crazy 100-bit or whatever charaters, like Zero and Master Cheif. tetris on the other hand is a game that all you have is...Block... The graphics in this Crazy block game is so good, Nintendo had the taj mahal in the game. I do like in this game that the taj mahal is in the title screen. Out of all of the title screens there are, This one is the best! All of that to say, im giving this a 8.
Sound: 10. Whats more catcher then the Famous B-Theme? a remix of X vs Zero from mega man X5? ya sounds awesome to me but not as awesome as Tetris's B-Theme. Tetris's music Has been very entertaning and has been remixed alot of times. Even though i said that i like alot of the other games, that i have reviewed, music. Tetris will make me sing till i Annoy my mother! (and lets try not to do that. ok?) I am going Sound a 10 even though i want to go be on!
Addictiveness: 9. if i had this game for my Game Boy, i would so play it. Even when i'm listening to my Cartunes file on my 3DS.  Like i said with some other games, i would play this anywhere, anytime! and its very appropret, I just dont want the little kids to play my Game Boy though.
Story: NA. I know that there is no story so we can just skip Story.
Depth: 3. Its a very simple game, all you gotta do is bring the blocks down, make straght bottim lines, and its simple as that.
Difficutly: 1. Come on people, i'm the daughter of the Queen of tetris, The controls are very simple, you use the D-Pad to move the blocks and you use A and B to flip the blocks.
Overall: 9.1. The game itself isn't that hard but trying to figure out what are you doing might be hard as well. I'm very sorry for this VERY SHORT Review. Local Modaraters: If you want to close this it is fine with me, i don't care. You can close this if you want.

The Tetris Question   Dr_Perez
Whenever I play any game, a question springs to mind;"Why am I playing this particular game?" Every game is designed to draw the player in somehow. For RPGs, it is a storyline filled with danger, questing, and the history of the world you happen to be in to give you feeling that you are in another world. For platformers, their draw is the difficult navigating of a level with hazards and enemies, all while dangling a prize in front of you, usually some person that is trapped, that you need to rescue. Puzzle games want to make you rack your brain as to how you can get past the obstacle in front of you so that you may learn more about the character you play, and the world around them.
Tertis, however, is a puzzle game, but at the same time, it has absolutely no story. However, it never ends, except when you fail to clear the wall you yourself are building. Even if you dedicate your life to playing Tetris, you will never be able to avoid the game over screen. This is a game that can never be cleared, a game that can easily steal away an hour of your time. This is one of the most addicting games in the world. And I believe that anyone should be able to load up this game, play for half an hour, then decide one of three things: They could say that this game has wasted their time and that it did not satisfy them at all. Others may say that this is a good game for when you are utterly bored and have nothing to do whatsoever. But I firmly believe that most will become addicted, always aiming to do better than they did the last time. Want to prove me wrong? Then enter the perpetual, frozen-in-time world of Tetris.

Tetris review for the Nintendo Game Boy!   G@mehe@d
Tetris was released in 1989 as a pack in for the Game Boy. It sold around 35 million copies and I understand why it's popular. It sort of surprises me how such few people play this game on Vizzed, because you can have some serious fun with this game. A good song and some quick puzzle action, make this game a joy to play. So here it is, the legendary Tetris.
GRAPHICS: The graphics are simple. They don't need to be advanced. The blocks have different shades of black and white and grey. Unlike separate colors in newer games. So it's just blocks basically. No extras no backgrounds. Just a basic rectangle and some blocks.
SOUND: I think the sound fits in the game quite well. It's just right for a type of game like this. I like the catchy songs that will get stuck in my head. I like simple various beeps throughout the game. What people don't get, is that some games are better off simple then complex. There have been many attempts to add a bunch of features to Tetris. One of those is Tetris Party which is a fairly good game, but there's nothing like the music in the original Game Boy version of Tetris.
ADDICTIVENESS: It really depends on what you are feeling like playing. Sometimes the game is very boring and sometimes the game is very fun and addicting. It just depends on what mood your in.
DEPTH: I wouldn't say this game has a ton to offer, but it has just enough to satisfy me. There are 2 game modes. Mode A is like the original Tetris, and mode B is where you start out with a bunch of broken up blocks, and your goal is to get rid of them by making lines and destroying the broken up blocks, after that the gameplay continues. There are 3 different songs. Each with a different feel to it, then there are plenty of difficulty levels to test anyone's limits.
DIFFICULTY: The first few difficulty levels are easy but as you start to get in the more harder levels it gets very hard.

An instant Classic   DragonSlayer22
Okay, just found this game while browsing the site.
I grew up with this game on my Game Boy Advance (didn't have original Game Boy until recently, also the copy was used) where I would challenge my friends to this game. They would laugh and often say things like "put that stupid block game down and come over here to play
Doom!".
Yeah, well what do they say about Minecraft huh?
Graphics: 7 Yes the graphics are good! As in the tetrominoes or blocks actually look detailed and like, well blocks I guess.
Sound: 8 There's little-to-no sound effects in this game, just nice 8-bit music. Theme A is the best, like always.
Addictiveness: 8
It's fun to play but really hard, as the game is never ending and will keep you on-edge. This version luckily does have an ending, but it's really hard to get to.
Story: 0
What? You expected a story? There's none. Stack blocks and that's it my friend, stack the blocks, nothing else.
Depth: 8 The game has a lot to do, as there are different ways to play and different places to start, nothing much other than that, except getting a higher score and beating your other one. That's always fun.
Difficulty: 10
It's Tetris, it will never be easy. No matter what. Ever.
OVERALL: 9 The game is a Classic to anybody with a Game Boy to play it on, any one (except the Game Boy Micro) basically anything can run this game. It's fun, it's addicting, it's frustrating too, once you realize how hard the game really is of course. I myself have gotten pretty far into the game, yet not too far. You can find this game at any store, where it has many ports of the game. This one in particular is common, as so many of them were made. So if you have a Game Boy of any kind. Get this game.

The rating doesn’t give it justice to the game   becerra95
Story time. I wasn’t introduced to the original gameboy until later on in my life, around 2010. Included with the gameboy were a bunch of games ranging from Rocky and Bullwinkle, Super Mario land 1 and 2, Alleyway to name a few. There was this one game that everyone would instantly know and love. The basic premise, easy to learn mechanics and style of play makes it a people pleaser for hours on end. I’ve been exposed to it multiple times before but this was the one eluded me for so long. This is Tetris for the original Gameboy.
Story : N/A
There is no story in the game. It was just a mindless game of pixelated blocks going down the floor. I mean you can make up a story or be imaginative but overall….
Story is blank.
Graphics : 8
Hear me out, when you go to the main menu you see the background and that’s pretty cool for a pack in title for the gameboy. The blocks are pretty good for the gameboy launch and rotation is smooth. The speed of the game is where it shows. The blocks go down quite quickly down to the floor but you do have a faint shadow effect, probably due to how old my gameboy is… I mean I tried fixing the contrast but it’s no biggie. What makes the game a lot more interesting is the variety of colors. You get shaded green, dotted green, green, dark green with a white green outline around the square, a green with another green that looks sunken in with the L shape, and more with the color green! Green everywhere I tell you!
It’s an 8. Pleasing to the eyes and not much for an early title.
Depth: 3
The game is just filling a horizontal line with parts of the tetrominoes. You have the option of two games and up to 9 levels to choose. Each level determines the speed of the falling tetrominoes and such. There’s no ending or anything it’s just a good pasttime to waste the day over and such. The more you remove lines simultaneously (Up to four) the higher your score. Its basically a high risk high reward, especially later levels.
Game A is the original Tetris where you keep stacking and every ten lines grants a new level and faster speed.
Game B is more so about hitting 25 lines and game over. Nothing else.
It’s a 3 out of 10. Basic game with a basic premise.
Difficulty : 5
The game is easy to pick up and play without much issue. The only difficulty that you’ll encounter is the higher levels with the speed of the game and your reaction time. Not much else to say but to make sure you have a fast reaction and puzzle solving skills.
It’s a 5 out of 10
Sound : 9
The game has the iconic song, well Russia it’s called “Korobeiniki”. This is a song that’ll be engraved in your mind for long play times and such. I mean it’s a banger and I can’t blame this song for being so popular. So popular I forgot that Tetris offer two other songs which are also good. They’re good but not as iconic as the first song. Game over gives a farting noise, best I could describe and game over song is pretty chill.
It’s a 9 out of 10. Iconic song plagues the rest of the songs but it’s deserving.
Addictive : 10
This game you can play for hours on end once hooked. The higher you go on the levels, the higher the score, the more you want to be glued in the game. Once you hit the game over sometimes I either be done for the day or try one more time if I feel like I can best myself from the score. This game is one of the most addicting games that you’ll ever play.
It’s a 10 out of 10. Basic fun causes mindless hours passed away. Warning
Overall I’ve played this game on multiple devices before. From a handheld device to a phone, even on a home brew 101 games device  and PlayStation. The gameboy and nes versions always eluded me but now that I have my taste of gameboy back in 2010 and review it today from playing, I can safely say it’s still one of the most addicting games I played. It’s simple concept yet fast paced gameplay made me lose 4 hours of my day and sleep but it was worth it if it meant to write this review. I highly recommend playing this game on any device if not on the gameboy.
My rating : 9.5 out of 10
Review rating : 7 out of 10 but I’ll give it a 9.5 also. Review rating doesn’t give it justice. I’ll mend it just this once.

Tetris-The inventor of Minecraft's Graphics   mlb789
To be honest, I have no idea why I even thought about reviewing this game. I absolutely hate Tetris, and have played it only once before this game. But, unfortunately for me, I played a little bit of Game Boy Roulette (which, if you noticed my last review, I drew McDonaldland), and drew this game. I expected a game like the one I played before (the 3ds version), and I noticed that I was right. Tetris is a game that has absolutely NO VARIATION in how the game is played. You have to use "logic" (no logic is involved, a kindergartner could play this game and excel) to put pieces in a spot where they will fit a row and be erased. You do not want to let the blocks reach the top, because if you do, you lose the game and have to start over.
Graphics 1: The title of this review is put just for this category. If you have played minecraft, you will notice everything is block like (except flowers and mushrooms, but that is a different story). Tetris is also just blocks. Maybe I hate playing with blocks and not being able to craft with them, but I am sick and tired of blocky graphics.
Sound 6: At first, I was going to rate the sound a little higher, like an 8 or something. But then, as I was in the process of writing my intro, I had the sound in the backround. I now want to murder the sound so much for being so repetitive (I mean, it is the same track repeated every 10 seconds! Wouldn't that drive you insane?). The only reason the sound is rated this high is because it was a little catchy at first, but got extremely BORING AND ANNOYING!
Addictiveness 5: I played this game for a little while, but I got really annoyed because a) the sound and b) the game play is that bad. You put the stuff together, but you will notice that it is the same objective over and over again, and you can't change the flow of things (unless you want to see how fast you can fail at the game, in which my record is 6 seconds). You could probably play this game for 1-2 hours over 1 month, and I am pretty sure that is stretching it (it's only rated this high because there are certain users who seem to love this game, and I would probably be yelled at{Joking of course, but it is probably more addictive than I found it[a 2]}).
Story : Yeah, forgettaboutit.
Depth 7: This game has about 8-10 levels, and you can beat your own score, so this game is a little deep. It isn't as deep as Pokemon or Sports games, but it could keep you from completing it for a little while.
Difficulty 6: This game is a little hard, but it isn't too difficult. The only reason it could be hard is because the controls sometimes don't work how I want them to, causing me to lose a line. You should find this game to be very easy.
Overall 5: This game is not a GREAT (or even good) game, but it definitely isn't the worst game I have ever played (see McDonaldland Review). I would recommend this game to people who a) like Tetris and have played it for a while, or b) someone who has free time on their hands.

The Original Tetris for the Nintendo Gameboy   luigi25

Tetris was first released on a new home gaming console called the Gameboy in the summer of 1989. This system was portable which meant players could take it with them anywhere they went. The Gameboy was only the size of a brick, but it was battery powered. However, from what I remember (I could be wrong about this), there was a re-chargeable battery pack that came with it. The Gameboy was my first ever gaming console that I got for my ninth birthday back in June 1992. Tetris came with the Gameboy, so this game is my first ever video game.

I remember spending all day playing Tetris. I got a lot of enjoyment out of it at first, but over time I really lost interest in it. To me, this wasn't a game that aged very well. I got Super Mario Land about a week or so later, and Tetris became a game that I basically quit playing. Today, I pretty much get the same experience out of it. Believe it or not, my dad actually used to play this game, and even he thought that it was a game based mainly on luck instead of any kind of skill. Maybe I can get a better understanding of why this game lost a lot of its appeal to me in this review.

Graphics 4/10: To start with, the version of Tetris on Gameboy doesn't have much variety to it graphically. The opening scene looks pretty nice with the Russian buildings and sunset, and the cutscenes that you get whenever you clear a stage on level 9 of the B-type game look okay too. However, the rest of the game doesn't have anything much going on with it. All that you really get is just a plain, boring background that includes a playing field with shapes that fall down from the top. With this version of Tetris, the cutscenes are the only thing that brings any life to this game. If it weren't for that, the Gameboy version (and a lot of other ports of this game) would look dead!

Music 6/10: I feel like the music in Tetris is good and all, but it also lacks variety. What really gets me about the version on Vizzed is how the A-type music has been changed. Not only that, a lot of the sound effects from the game I grew up with have been changed as well. Vizzed is a pretty cool site, and I guess maybe copyright issues are to blame for this. Although, this really hurts my opinion of this version's soundtrack. They removed the best song of the game! So, you only have 2 main tracks: the B-type and C-type. You also get the opening song which is nice and catchy, but that's really all this game has to offer. This Gameboy version of Tetris has some good music in it that is A-quality, but there is very little of it!

Gameplay 6/10: Tetris contains two types of games: A-type and B-type. The player has the option of playing either one in any order. In both game types, there are different shapes falling down the playing field. You have to move the shapes where you want them in order to create horizontal lines. When these lines are created, those lines of blocks disappear, and you get a line.

In the A-type game, the object is to beat your highest score. The highest score you can get is 999,999 which was almost impossible, so don't worry about trying to do that! Anyway, the more horizontal lines you get, the higher your score will be and earning 4-liners bumps your score up the fastest. I've found it is easiest to start the game out on level 0 because after earning a certain number of lines, the game changes levels, and the shapes fall faster. If the shapes reach the top of the playing field, you'll have to start all over again with your score.

Whenever I first got this game as a kid over 25 years ago, I spent all day trying to beat my highest score. It was a rainy day in mid-June, and I didn't have anything else to day even though it was my birthday. However, later on, I got tired of this, and I have the same experience re-playing the A-type game of Tetris as an adult. I feel like all it amounts to is just luck. Your score depends on how many lines you can get, and that relies on what shapes the game gives you. Sometimes, it will work in your favor and give you shapes you can use to get as many as 150,00 points, and other times I struggle to get 75,000. In my opinion, this isn't good game design, and players like myself might find themselves wanting to play more of the game, but if you can't get anywhere it becomes a game that isn't motivating at all! The A-type game is enjoyable but only under certain circumstances.

In the B-type game, the player has to score 25 lines in order to clear the playing field. If you want to, you can start on level 0 or level 9. However, if you clear the field on levels 0 - 8, you won't get anything. It is only on level 9 that the game plays you a song. The length of this song depends on the height of the lines you clear on level 9. When clearing the playing field on level 9-0, you get a guy on top of the screen playing a fiddle. If you clear the game on level 9-5, a whole band joins in with him, and you get a space shuttle. Level 9-5 is the highest you can go in the B-type game.

The B-type game is not easy. When you get to about 9-4, you don't have anywhere to put the shapes the game gives you. The player has to find the best place to put them quickly to keep them from filling up the playing field resulting in a Game Over. You need to get lines in order to clear the area before the blocks pile up. This is a long, tedious, trial and error process that isn't much fun. Again, you're basically at the mercy of the game, and it either lets you win or it doesn't. Most of the time it doesn't, so you basically waste an hour or two trying to clear the area in order to finish the game. I swear there isn't any skill to this, just pure, dumb, luck!

After re-playing Tetris over 2 decades later, I have started to realize why I lost interest in it. This is especially true for the B-type game. What a pain in the you know what! I remember my dad even getting pissed off trying to beat it. Sometimes even he couldn't get much of a score on the A-type game either. I think the A-type game is the only one I enjoy playing, but after a while if I know I'm not going to score any higher than a certain amount, I just give up. I almost always give up on the B-type game when I get to 9-5. Screw that! It doesn't matter which version or port of Tetris I play. I have the same feeling about its game design, and that is a feeling of mixed to negative emotions.

Content 6/10: From what I've seen on YouTube, this version and the NES version of Tetris are the only two that contain both the A-type and B-type games. In the A-type game, you have 9 levels that are only about 2 or 3 minutes long. With the B-type, I only found myself wanting to play the 5 height levels on level 9 which are also about the same length. So basically, Tetris only amounts to a game that is about 35 to 40 minutes long if you are able to whiz through these stages. Most players (like me) just find themselves just re-playing these few short levels till they get tired of them. There isn't much to this game.

Difficulty 10/10: When talking about the difficulty of Tetris, there are a lot of things to keep in mind. This is a game where there is not much objective except for on the B-type game. Although, players who don't want to mess with that game don't have to play it, and I guess that's why the later ports of Tetris did away with it. Most people played the A-type game where they played against themselves to beat their highest score, and that was the game's main appeal. However, that really depends on what shapes the game gives you to work with. Tetris can be hard at times and other times it isn't. I have to say, I don't enjoy games like this all the time and find them pretty hard to get where I want to get with them.

Overall 5.5/10: The Gameboy version of Tetris is a game that I can't rate very high. For some people, I can recommend the game, but it all depends on what kind of games you like. I felt like the NES version was better with its graphics and music. I hate how Vizzed got rid of the best song in the game which made this game even less appealing. My dad enjoyed this game more than I did growing up, but even he had his limits with it. Nobody likes playing a game they feel like they have no chance of getting anywhere with. That is especially true for a game like Tetris no matter which version you play.

Comments for Tetris

lilbutch07 10-20-19 - 12:03 PM
So, this is the original version. Later on, they updated it, with a few changes, like a big fix, and it has the theme we all know. Korobeiniki. This ROM is just an older version.
jokool 05-19-15 - 11:34 AM
This is weird. I have this game, and the A theme is completely different on here than my copy of the game (my copy is Korobeiniki).
