Happy Halloween, Vizzed Board! I know that this game isn't exactly "Halloween-ish", but I have got to finish "TMNT Month". It's just this and, if I have time, The Hyperstone Heist (The Genesis version of this game) and hopefully it'll put this month to an end. So...I guess I should put my usual introduction here. I know I said that this game is the reason that the original arcade game is so overlooked, but this doesn't mean that I hate this game. As a matter of fact, I love this game. This game is often considered one of the best beat-em-up games of all time, if not THE best. Does it really deserve this prestigious title? Let's find out in my review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (the arcade version, NOT the SNES port)
Graphics
The graphics for this game are some of the best looking graphics of the early 90's and definitely the best Turtles graphics up to this point. They still look amazing even compared to some of the graphics that we would see in a game like this today. The animations are very smooth and fluid and it really looks like you're swinging whatever weapon you're holding (in my case, Leo's swords). The enemy sprites are pretty good as well and it's easy to determine what Foot Ninja do what based on their color. There are also enemies other than the Foot Ninja like giant Big Foot looking creatures with bazookas. The levels themselves also look pretty good. The backgrounds are a very nice touch to the look of the levels and are quite well done. But like I've said in every other one of my reviews this month, great graphics don't always equal a great game (I'm looking at you, Call of Duty).
Sound
The music in this game is some of the best music in video history, period. I know I said something similar last game, but it is just REALLY difficult to find a track that I dislike even a bit. It is just that awesome! Also, the intro song to this game is very different from the SNES port's. The song is called "Pizza Power" (Pizza Power is also something the Turtles say every time they eat a Pizza box that has a picture of a bomb) and it's actually pretty catchy, seriously, it's playing in my head as I type this review. The sound effects also got an upgrade from the previous title. The hit sounds sound a bit more like you're hitting something and the explosions sound a lot more like explosions. It's small changes like this that give this game what I like to call "polish". I could go on and on about all the different songs in the game, but I don't want to make this section the longest section in the review.
Addictiveness
Well, what can I say? This game is about as addicting as it gets. I remember when I was a kid and I saw this game at a Chuck E Cheese once and I was hooked. I didn't care that there was no ticket reward for playing the game, it was just so fun. I think I used up more tokens on this game than all the other games combined that day. Like I said last time, it's definitely a good thing I'm able to play this here on Vizzed Board because otherwise, I might use up more quarters than I should on this game. This is definitely something I'll come back and play hopefully for years to come. Who knows, maybe Netplay will be added to Arcade games and that will just add to the replay value...a LOT.
Story
O.k. the story, while not very important in a beat-em-up game is here, but it's very simple. While April O'Neal is reporting in New York, Krang takes the Statue of Liberty. Why? I don't know I don't even think it's explained in-game. Anyway, after surfing through the sewers, Shredder banishes the Turtles to a time warp, and I quote, "...from which you will never return!" After you return from the supposedly inescapable time warp, you fight Krang and then Shredder for the final showdown (wait didn't this happen last game?). While the story isn't really a major point of the game, I felt that it needed to be pointed out.
Depth
This game is actually quite a bit longer than the previous title in terms of number of levels, the levels themselves, heck even the story is longer. This one has more to offer though. While they did take out the different planes and the "going down" section, they added some more things you can do with the enemies. You can not only throw them against the wall, but now you can throw them into the screen and onto the ground several times.
Difficulty
This game isn't quite as difficult as when I first played it, but I guess that's just because I've been playing it for so long. It is an arcade game, but now it's one I can kind of breeze through, well of course I die...a lot, but whatever. For newbies, it will be a little difficult, but once you get used to it, it gets easier. Not much else to say really.
Gameplay and Controls
Once again, the controls are: joystick moves, first button jumps, and second button attacks. It's like the first one, but a bit more polished and smooth. since I basically covered this in the last review, I'll just leave this as is.
Overall this is a really good game that everyone should play. I give it a 9 out of 10. See you next month for Sonic 2 Month

LET'S KICK SHELL!!   huntra1291
First off I want to start off by saying as a kid I was a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan. I had it all. The toys, the VHS tapes everything. To me it was the best franchise for a kid growing up in the 90's to be a fan of. Now as an adult I'm still a fan but not as much. So I was very delighted to find out that this site has the arcade version of a video game I grew up playing as a kid. But I'm not writing my review based on the MAME version of the game. No, my review is coming off the fact that I myself own an actual working arcade cabinet of the game. Don't get me wrong I love the MAME version but its not the version I played prior to my review. Mainly because I owned the arcade cabinet long before I knew about this site.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time was developed, published and released by Konami back in 1990 is a 4 player style beat 'em up where the player can select from 1 of 4 turtles. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael. Like the first game for the arcades this one also a 2D side scrolling beat 'em up. So is it better or worse then the first one? Does it hold up just as good if not better then the first? Lets answer those questions and more in my review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.
Difficulty 2. With this being the MAME version of the game its not very hard at all considering you can add as many credits as you want. Also the controls are very tight and responsive. Of course I'm speaking as a person that's using a Xbox 360 controller.
Depth 4: There isn't a lot of depth to the game. All you do is go right and beat up the various bad guys as you go. That's all there is to it. The game itself doesn't take that long to beat. I've gone through the entire game start to finish in about an hour. An hour and a half at the most. Its a short game but a fun game.
Story 5: The story is kind of mediocre. The story involves our Heroes in a Half Shell going on a rescue mission through time to get back the stolen Statue of Liberty that was stolen by Shredder. That's basically the entire story right there. As I said not really much of one.
Addictiveness 10: This game is simply a blast to play through. Not once do I get bored whenever I play it. There have been times that I play it more then once a day. Its really that addicting and I highly recommend it to everyone.
Sound 10. The sounds are amazing to listen to. The music is fun and energetic to listen to. The songs are ones you will remember even when you are not playing the game.
Graphics 10:  The graphics still look amazing and hold up very well despite the game being over 20 years old. They are extremely colorful and very well detailed. I never get tired of looking them as I play the game. Its just a joy to look at.
Overall 6.8: Now I know with me giving good praise of the game in my other sections you'd think I'd give it a 10. Well no. Mainly because it suffers from 3 main areas for me. First its the difficulty. I wish that even though its the arcade version and you can add as many credits as you want it was a little more harder. Secondly is the depth. I wish it could have been longer then it was or had more to offer. But unfortunately it does not. The third and final thing is the story. I wish there was more to it then there was. Sometimes I wish it was more involved then what it was.
So aside from those 3 factors is it a game worth your time? Yes. I cannot recommend this game enough. You would be doing yourself a favor if you give this game a moment of your time. You will definitely not be disappointed.

Classic from a era long gone   Jinx98
This version of TMNT Turtles in Time, has beat out the SNES version as my favorite turtles game by far.I had a small glimpse of this in a pool hall as a small child, but I can't remember ever actually playing it myself. Than again I missed out on a lot of these types of games and I must thank Vizzed, because now I get the chance to finally say I did. This game was simply amazing for a game created in the early 90's! Sound, graphic details ect, I would say the ONLY thing it doesn't have that the SNES version has is better bosses[Super Shredder,Slash,Rat King,Bebop and Rocksteady]As far as it's difficulty goes, you should NOT be expecting a fair fight. Lets be honest! This is the arcade version, which means it was built throw out as many enemy's at you as it can in order to make you give up the quarters in order to beat it. Another example is Simpsons Arcade. On this site you have an advantage of setting the amount of lives you want, but back in the day if you were planning to solo, I would strongly suggest using Mikey since he hits the hardest or Leo because he's balanced.I rate this game a 9/10 overall.

LET'S KICK SHELL! again   classgame
They made another one? Why didn’t the Simpsons get another one (granted they have several games for home console but come on)
Gameplay and Story: The story opens where April is live at the Statue of Liberty (don’t worry she’s not the abduction victim this time) and we see Krang steal the statue…because I guess he wants to join Carmen Sandiego’s gang (well at least he went all out on the game show they could only steal Lincoln’s nose off of Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty’s Torch) wait no that’s not the reason why, we don’t find out why, but after three rounds of fighting with the foot soldiers our shelled heroes are sent to various periods in time including the prehistoric times, the wild west and.….2020? Boy did they and the game developers have no idea what was in store for 2020, eventually after the 2100 fight with Krang we are back in the 90s at the technodrome where we fight shredder and this time he doesn’t duplicate himself
Graphics: There is a slight improvement in the graphics but not by much but it's definitley noticeable when we get closeups of Shredder
Soundtrack: Oy get used to hearing “Let’s Kick Shell” it gets quite annoying after awhile, but we actually get more dialogue from the turtle you are playing, heck they actually say the names of the levels you are in now and they react when stuff happens to them. Actually we get alot more dialogue period
Addictive: I only played this game once so I can’t call it addictive if I only played it once I supposed I could add it to next year's Victoria Day Long Weekend poll
Depth: there’s actually five stages rather than the amount that was used in the previous game and yet somehow it feels alot longer than the previous arcade entry, unless the home version has some major differences and another round (remember I played the arcade version of Golden Axe it didn’t have the Death Bringer boss level but we did see the players good friend Alex get killed so…I will definitely have to check out the home release version)
Difficulty: So when I got to the 2020 portion of the game for some reason I couldn’t get the Turtle I was playing to be visible onscreen which made the gameplay super difficult no matter how many times I tapped the up button so it loses a point for the glitch (I mean unless it’s the copy of the game that’s the problem because I watched a longplay of this in order to review it)
Post review follow up: Before anyone gets on my case I have played this game once before, but I don’t have to to play and review this at the same time I thought I would have had more time on my hands once summer was on…ugh I just remembered I have to pre-write the review for friday and I don’t know what I will be reviewing
This concludes my review, join me tomorrow when I review Disney’s Aladdin Activity Center…even though I haven’t owned the game in years (I gotta start considering playing the Jump Start series…and the other Math Blaster series) now I have one week to decide what I will do for the final review of this tour because I don’t know what I’ll do

Winners don't use drugs? Okay, that's cool.. but what does that have to do with the game?
JahEmperah 07-22-14 - 07:44 PM
This Game is a True Classic and the SNES Version is slightly better and takes more strategy in order to not lose all continues to beat the Game.

I've got great memories playing this game in an arcade at the country fair with 3 of my friends when I was younger. Good times.
sonicbros 12-11-12 - 01:52 PM
SNES did a great job with this one
WanderingHero 11-29-12 - 01:44 PM
This version is actually infeiour to turtles in time. I mean its got way less levels and you lose a life if you take more than 5 minutes in a level
fatninja479 10-18-12 - 02:33 AM
"Winners don't use drugs" Michael Phelps won a lot of gold medal, yet he smokes marijuana.
