TMNT - the ok single player one, not the sweet multiplayer ones   endings
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They got really popular thanks to their TV cartoon, and video games soon followed for arcade and home. This is about the NES home version. I bought this game way back in the late 80's, and have seen it on many 'difficult' games lists. In this game you play as all the turtles in their quest to save their friend April, choosing to play any turtle any time you want, they do not share life bars and each have their own weapons. You can also see a limited map on the start screen, which is used for the overworld levels, the first area you will see. You walk on the streets (in broad daylight!) and enter manholes and doors, which take you to a side-view inside the area. This is the platforming part, and where you will spend most of your time. The overworld only serves to connect the side-scrolling parts together. However, upon playing the fighting parts, you soon will realize...
ALL TURTLES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
There is one turtle who is the best for all situations. Here is the order as I see it:
Donatello (purple)
Leonardo (blue)
Mike and Raph (orange and red -tied)
Donatello does the most damage, has the most reach (even going through floors and walls to hurt foes) - he is without a doubt the one who should fight the bosses.
Leonardo is not bad, he doesn't have as much reach as Don, but can sometimes poke his katana through walls enough to hurt things. His regular attack also protects him from low flying aireal creatures and jumpers - as he swings it over his head.
Mike and Raph - these guys have the shortest reach, one is better at hitting things low (Mike) one is better at high attacks (Raph)
.
So already, the game is a bit flawed. We have one super turtle, one pretty good one, and two useful in specific situations. Fortunately, there are sub-weapons, which can lend strength to our weaker members.
Depth: 4
Of the sub-weapons, each turtle can have one of your choice, and toggle their main and sub weapon with select button. You just have to find them, some even enemies drop. The ninja scrolls, throwing stars (single or triple) are useful but have an ammo limit. Finding more of the same item will add to the total. The Boomerang item is special, and worth noting if you catch it, no ammo is taken off.
There is a lot of ground to cover, six stages, each with a unique enemy boss (or bosses), and some optional areas for health pick ups. I did see a lot of iconic vehicles and enemies from the comics/tv show, they did a good job overall, but beyond the small optional areas, and rather small maps in platforming, there is not a lot here.
Graphics: 7
I do like the four turtles are well represented in a large character model, and unique weapons. The enemies are also large and well drawn, but suffer some some weak coloring. For instance, a ton of enemies are a messy combination of pale blue and red splotches - the mousers, the hornet like enemies, etc. It just seems sloppy. The large overworld areas are detailed, even if you only have limited interaction with them (go in doors/ manholes - dodge steamroller). The backgrounds in the platforming sections are a bit messy, and sometimes blend in with the the action.
A lot of the things this series is known for are there. The rat master, Splinter is here, as is April O'Neil. The main archvillian, Shredder is here of course. But a few iconic things are a bit off model for me. For instance, one of the first enemies you meet is mini-boss Bebop, a warthog faced man. Sounds pretty easy to recognize, right? Nah, I didn't even notice it was him until the ending told me who it was. Another issue was scale - towards the end, you have to fight the Technodrome - this is a giant globeshaped tank thing. Its supposedly massive, full of 100's of robots and the base of operations for your nemesis. Think Death Star on wheels, ok? This is it in the game...
LOOK AT HOW YOU ARE TALLER THAN ITS TANK TREADS HAH
Foot soldiers keep popping out of the tank if you don't break the door (near the eye), and they don't stop. How many could be in this clown car? 12 all scrunched up?  But oh, get this- after blowing small parts off it, you go inside it and theres an entire level inside!! Even by 8-bit logic its pretty crazy looking. I get this is 8-bit, and no one loves the NES and its limitations more than me, but I think this was a bad call. There is no way they could have represented this behemoth to a believable scale.  Being there are so many strange enemies the ninja turtles fight, I could only imagine ANY other person to fight would have been a better choice here.
Its not all off-model examples. You do fight a Giant Mouser boss and it looks great. The opening cinematic is very well done. The ending, well the ending is really lame. But hey, endings doesn't ruin endings.
Sound: 7
The music sounds nothing like the 80's cartoon, but its still pretty good. One thing I noticed about Konami's line - the music is usually amped up and trying to rock your face. Since the turtles were all about radical cowabunga dude, I felt it fit with the game. While none of the music seeemed particularly great, they did grow on me over time. The overhead map songs, the music for the common side levels - if I heard just a few bars of either, I would know instantly what game they came from.
The sound effects are OK, but again, don't sound like anything from the popular cartoon source. Some of it I expected more. For example, when a turtle is defeated, they shrink to baby turtle size and a whimsical little tune plays. It didn't really sound like I was suffering a setback. You also can acquire scroll sub-weapons that shoot a long wave out. Magic! But using one doesn't make a great whoosh noise or anything like that.
While both are servicable, both background music and sound effects felt they could be put in any game. A big miss for me is not using the TV show theme song for the titles.
Story: 7
Each chapter of the game (6) take place in different locations and have different objectives. You were accomplishing things, and moving forward while fighting several recognizable enemy characters. The first mission is to rescue your reporter friend, April O'Neil, whom we saw kidnapped at the beginning. After you free her you have to get to the top of a large dam, and then jump off it to disarm underwater bombs. Then you get to control the turtle vehicle- which is fun as it has weapons, to rescue someone else. These teenagers are known for their love of pizza, and it is captured here, as the only way to heal an ally, sliced, half or a whole pizza pie. Sadly, the turtles are guttons and do not share. If you have one turtle pick up a whole pie, he does not split it with his brothers, even if he has full health. Watch out for that.
Difficulty: 8
This can be a pretty tough game. It has some tricky jumps in sewer levels that can annoy.  If you fall in the water below, it takes you back out of the area to retry it. The turtles regular jump is very high and fast, while their small jump is not as short as you might like, and slow. One will dodge nearly everything - including a small ledge as you shoot over it. The other can make the jump if positioned just so - but your slow jump leaves you prone to an enemy knocking you in the water.
The aforementioned pizza issue is a problem. As you have all turtles at your disposal to swap out, you cannot have them share - someone has to eat the entire piece offered. This will often lead to at least one of your team with low life. But they do not die, they are captured and held in a location - you can free them there, of course you will have to fight lots of guardians and risk hurting  more of your group. Its generally best to keep them all alive and ignore this diversion.
The 2nd stage's underwater bomb disposal gets a lot of hate. Its tough because the whole area is lined with killer purple seaweed that shocks you (yes), and there is a timer to disable all the bombs. You have to move fast, but not so fast you get a turtle captured and have to start back at the dam. Any disarmed bombs stay disarmed of course, but running through the purple gauntlet is tricky and takes a lot of practice.
Most of the overworld is actually small mazes from stage 3 on, which makes things a grind when you don't know where to go. You have to know which buildings only lead to a pizza slice (after a bunch of enemies are killed), which buildings are where the hostage turtle is kept, or progress towards the boss. I had a Nintendo Power magazine to help me, but if you aren't using a walkthrough, you're going to have to learn for yourself.  Before save states, you also had to beat all this in one go. There is no passwords and no continues if you lose all your turtles.
Addictiveness: 7
Despite the mean difficulty, I still loved this game, and had little trouble coming back to it. You wont beat this without practice. The health juggling between your party takes some getting used to, as does the jumping mechanics, the different sub-weapons, the dang bomb disarming - this game takes a lot of time to master. It only feel unfair a few times though, just enough to give you hope.
Overall: 7.7
This is a difficult game, but one that rewards you with a feeling of accomplishment once you pass it. If you like a challenge, just keep at it, you will persevere! There are a few cheap parts, like the Shredder can be super tough or super easy to beat, and the jumping leaves some to be desired. But its not all bad, its just missing better representation of the turtles for all those Michelangelo and Rapheal fans - but we would get those later in the multiplayer games, which seriously is what a series of 4 crime-busting mutants needs to be anyway.

The black sheep of Ninja Turtle games   Azul Fria
OVERVIEW

Just like the majority of TMNT games, your friend April gets captured and it is up to you four Turtles: Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello to rescue her and also take on the Shredder and his goons. The turtles in this game are based more on their hardcore original selves as opposed to the cartoony selves that everyone has grown accustomed to. Each turtle has different strengths and weaknesses that gives them one advantage or disadvantage over the others.

GRAPHICS - C+

Everything seems OK to me. You can easily tell what objects are which in the game for the most part such as which turtle you are controlling due to the different color mask they wear. However, the colors in general are not as vivid as the other games in the series as in a few levels where the level design can throw you off on where to go as seen in level 5 because you can't tell which is part of the foreground and what it is part of the foreground. In Level 4, some graphics are actually part of the background but they don't look like you could go through them and you will often make the mistake of trying to get around it and pay for it. There are other times where you will probably be saying, "What the hell is that thing?" You got men on fire, guys with chainsaws, ninjas that look like dinosaurs, weird boomerang throwing guys that look like turtles themselves, and a whole bunch of enemies that didn't belong in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In fact, the only enemies that even appeared in the cartoon series were the mousers and the bosses: Bebop, Rocksteady, Shredder, Giant Mouser, the Technodrome and Slash. I assume those dinosaur looking ninjas are supposed to be the Foot Clan. However, some of the graphics do alert you to dangers that can kill you in an instant or hinder you in other ways: seaweed in Level 2 underwater that drag you in, electric algae that sap your energy bit by bit in the same level, level 3 introduces water that escort you out of the premises, lava that will instantly kill you if you fall in it. Spikes will also occur and they even do damage to you when you are standing directly next to them. This is not a graphics flaw but more of a programming flaw but if you see a narrow gap between platforms, you can actually walk across the gap. It's crucial for that low ceiling in level 3 but in level 4 it will most likely get you killed by the closing walls.

I am not talking about the NES game in this paragraph here but I will advise you to stay the hell away from the PC port of this game. Aside from the unpassable area which you need to cheat to get by, the PC version of April O'Neil is nightmare inducing especially the ending where she totally looks like a scary Ronald McDonald.

SOUND - B

I do like the music in the game. Each level or scenario has catchy music that is easy to dig. My favorite music is inside the building areas where it sounds like something straight from the 40s or 50s with the thought of same era cartoons fitting it. Other good songs were the miniboss theme, the boss theme, and the mission complete jingle. As far as the sounds are concerned, the majority of them were recycled from other Konami Games. Let's remember that Ultra Games was a subdivision of Konami USA used to get around that NES rule of five 3rd party games per company per year. Most notable borrowed sound was the pause sound that was also used in Track and Field 2. The most annoying sound in the game is when you are super low on energy and that alarm gets so frustrating.

CONTROLS - C+

The controls are super strict and it is hard to do the thing you want in some levels. In some levels, jumping can be a chore as you have to control your downward motion carefully after a jump and then there is that case of walking across the narrow gap I mentioned before that could lead to your death in level 4. Controls are further hampered by the type of turtle you have because some can't even attack crouching enemies next to them and you have to do some constant pausing and switching of turtles to remedy the situation. In the underwater level, swimming is extremely hard because you often slow down if you are moving to the left and it can get you hurt.

GAMEPLAY - C+

This is going to be a long one folks because I got a lot to say about this section. The game will take a pro to get through all the nonsense this game throws at you. First I will discuss the turtles you control. Donatello is the best character to use for all bosses and minibosses and other bosses because he dishes out the most damage. He can also hit enemies from a safe distance on a plane above him or below him. However, his attacks are slow and he has a hard time hitting enemies on the ground close to him. Raphael has the shortest range and is not always a good turtle to use in the game. However, his attack is quick and does almost as much damage as Donatello so if you are lucky enough to kill an enemy with one hit, then stick with him in situations that is hard for Donatello to combat. Leonardo is the default turtle. His katana is not to powerful but he has a little bit of reach to hit enemies from afar. His weapon does double damage when he loses half of his energy. He can also attack some enemies on the plane above or below him but does not has the same reach as the Bo staff. Finally, we got Michelangelo with his nanchackus. Like the katana, they are not so powerful until Michelangelo loses half of health and he can easily hit enemies close to him on the ground level.

For the game itself, level 1 is not so bad as the only danger is the steamrollers that will kill you in one hit. The first miniboss is Bebop. He is easy to dispatch of with Donatello. Be warned that you can still take damage from touching Rocksteady who is holding April hostage above. The boss is the aforementioned Rocksteady who also falls easily to Donatello with a simple trick of standing on the upper platform and continuously attacking downward and hitting him as he jumps. Level 2.... Good luck beating this level because most because most beginners will not even make it out of this level. Inside the dam is not the problem but when you go underwater, you have to disarm several bombs within a time limit. If the time runs out, instant game over. Along the way you have to deal with the seaweed and electric algae. Towards the end, there is a section of algae that you can't avoid getting hit so you will need a sacrificial turtle or two to take damage to get through the section and switch out afterwards. Once you make it to the final bomb and disarm it, then you are making good progress. Level 3 introduces the turtle vans and allows you to take damage from the steamrollers without dying instantly. One building contains missiles which you will need to bomb the barriers away. This is the instance where walking across the gap is required. Pitfalls do damage to you but will not kill you. In fact, if you fall down off the building with little energy left then your lifebar is empty but you are not dead. Slash is the boss of the 3rd level. His slash is damaging and he must be dealt with from a safe distance. When he is defeated you face a robotic version who is just as deadly. Avoid his attacks and switch turtles if needed. Level 4 is like a maze. You know if you are on the right track if the number goes up and not down. You will see a few fire pits here and there and some magnets that function oppositely. They pull if you are not level with it but do not pull you if you are level with them. Area 18 is the final part, you must be careful dropping down as the closing wall will kill you on touch. The Giant Mouser is very easy with Donatello. Wait for it to open its mouth and expose its weakness then pause and unpause and it will close its mouth but leave its weakness exposed and Donatello can stand under it and kill it with ease. Level 5, is where you can get lost but all you got to do is go to the left on the overview and enter the manhole. Get through this to face the Technodrome. Wait for the electricity to recede then take out the guns then go for the eye on top. Leonardo can take this guy out just as easily as long as he doesn't jump to high. The final level is super tough so if you got any special weapons, use them to take out guns from afar. The final part is tough because you got easy enemies that alternate with tougher ones. Kill the easy ones then let the tough ones go off screen. With Donatello or a scroll item, Shredder is the easiest boss of them all. Keep knocking him off the platform until he dies. Don't get hit by his beam or you will be turned into an ordinary turtle at that is instant death.

REPLAYABILITY - B

It was a tough game but it was still a little bit fun to play as it forced the player to adapt to certain situations and remedy them in a timely manner. Some enemies pissed me off here and there and some of the jumps were extremely harsh but once you get past them then you can beat this game a little easier.

OVERALL - C+

Had a lot of rage inducing moments when I first played the game and it took a while to get through it. I swear the difficulty of this game was beyond hard. This was one of the games that gave the meaning to the difficulty Nintendo Hard. Shredder was more of a saving grace since he was super easy to beat.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles review!   SacredShadow
Hey guys, it's Razor-987 here with another game review, today I will be reviewing Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles for the NES! Overall I think this is a great game and I think it is definitely worth your time to play this game if you are a fan as well. So without further delay, let's get on to the review!
Gameplay:
Okay, as far as gameplay goes, it starts you off with an overview map type look of the game where you can see where you are going on the screen and the view changes to a side view when you enter a sewer or a building, when you are in, you face off against several enemies such as foot soldiers and fire freaks and mousers and a bunch of other enemies. In order to defeat them, you can use your respective weapon for whichever turtle you are playing as. You can regain health by eating pizza of course and your health bar will fill back up. There will also be a small map of the area so you can navigate where you are going next. If your turtles is captured by the roller cars while on the mission, you can rescue them one at a time starting in level 3. The objective of the game is to rescue April by going through the levels of the game. So overall the gameplay is rather simple and easy to follow.
Graphics: 7
The graphics are pretty good considering when the game came out in the late 80s, the enemies have some decent detail and they don't all look the same, the foot soldiers and mousers are fairly easy to make out and they at least aren't fuzzy or cartoony in their design. The map and the background graphics are also pretty good. Overall the graphics aren't amazing, but keep in mind that this is the first TMNT game and the ones later to come are a lot better in many aspects, so because of this I scored the graphics an 7 out of 10, they aren't great, but they suffice and at the very least they are pretty clear and you can tell apart what each of the enemies are supposed to be.
Sound: 5
If anything, I think the music and sounds of this game were the best part, because it is pretty catchy and I think it just goes really well with the game for some reason. While the sound effects themselves aren't that great, I don't think it is enough of a reason to not bother playing the game, they are kind of fuzzy and they don't really sound like what they should, sometimes if I hit an enemy or attack them with my weapon, it doesn't really sound like what it should sound like, so even though the sound effects aren't the best out there, they still function to do their purpose fairly well which is all that really matters in the game. Plus it is good to know that the sounds and even the music gets a lot better in later TMNT games! Since the music of the game is kind of catchy and the sound of the game isn't really the best out there, I averaged the two scores and gave the overall sound a 5 which is pretty neutral considering it isn't horrible, but it isn't amazing either.
Addictiveness: 4
This game is fairly addictive I guess you could say, I have only played it once since I have played several TMNT games before and I haven't given this on a try. I wasn't really wowed by this game, but it wasn't a horrible game that I would advise you to stay away from because I can assure you there are far worse games out there. All I can say is if you are new and have never played a TMNT game before, you could give this one a try if you want, but you aren't really missing out on much if you don;t decide to play this game because there are a lot better TMNT games out there. I don't really see myself playing this game anytime soon because I personally think that TMNT 3 or Turtles in Time are both much better games and they look a lot better as well, but if you are willing to give this game a shot, go for it, it's your call. Overall, this game isn't that bad, but I don't think it is one of those games you MUST play because you aren't really missing out on much if you decide not to play it, so because of that I scored the addictiveness a 4, but that really depends on you, I just don't see myself playing this game again to be honest. I don't think it is nearly as addicting as some of the later tmnt games because they really draw you in more with better sound and graphics as well as easier controls and they offer more of a plot and a better challenge without it being frustrating due to the controls. So if you are looking for a good tmnt game, I'm not going to say you shouldn't play this game and give it a try, but I will say that there are much better tmnt games out there that you should give a try.
Story: 4
The story of this game is rather simple and there are two parts two it, the first part is where April gets kidnapped which isn't really a shocker, and the second is when Splinter is taken by the shredder and you have to rescue them both by making your way through 6 levels of fighting foot soldiers and a bunch of other enemies in order to rescue them. This rescue April from shredder type plot has been used a lot before, but in the end, I don't really think this is a big deal, and this is the first game of the series, but it doesn't really matter that much since this is pretty much a beat em' up game to begin with. Overall the story is pretty much the same as it always is and this game really isn't much of an exception even though it is the first to follow this plot. Because of this I scored it a 4 overall since the plot is pretty simple and basic.
Depth: 4
The game has a decent amount of depth to it, it does offer 6 levels and each of them have few different areas within the level, and a lot of the times you will end up going back and forth since some areas lead to a dead end, so you will have to keep trying if you want to beat the level. There really isn't that much more to it other than that, so the depth isn't high since this is a simple game that you probably aren't likely to play all the way through too many times. Although it offers 6 levels, each of them are fairly quick and it shouldn't take you that long to beat. Overall I think the depth deserves a 4 overall, there is a good amount of stuff to do in the game, but I don't really think it compensates for the shortness of the levels and the low likelihood that you will end up laying this game again and again. But it is up to you and how you feel about the game because you may find it more challenging, I just don't think there was that much going for this game to really keep me interested like the other tmnt games for example.
Difficulty: 10
I will admit that this game is pretty challenging and I would say that the most frustrating part is probably the controls, they were really annoying at times, even though they were rather simple, you have to react quickly and think on your own because some of the stages in this game are pretty complicated and difficult as well. It is especially annoying when you are going against the bosses in the game, just be prepared to die a lot in this game if you decide to try it out because if you wait too long or if you aren't able to get to the nest area, then you have to re defeat some of the enemies in that area which can be really frustrating and can waste your time. Out of all the turtles, I would say that it is best to either go with donatello or leonardo because their weapons have better range and that is going to be beneficial to you in this game because raphael and michaelangelo don't have any range at all, so when you are playing the other two, be sure to make them last as long as possible before you have to end up switching. Control wise, I am not all that crazy about it, they are rather simple and it is just one button to jump and one to swing your weapon, but the difficult part about it is the way you switch your weapons around, you have to go all the way to the start screen and then select the other weapon to use. Overall I didn't really like or feel comfortable with the control setup of this game and I think it is pretty uncomfortable at many times throughout the game so let that be a heads up for those of you who want to give this game a shot. Because of the controls and how annoying it can be to switch weapons combined with the difficult bosses and stages and how the enemies can really pile up, I scored the difficulty a 10 out of 10, I think that this has to be one of the most difficult aspects of the game.
Overall: 8.4
Overall, this game isn't half bad, but would I force you to play it? Probably not because there are a lot better tmnt games out there, but I am not going to discourage you from playing it because this game is the stepping stone to such a fun, catchy and classic series. So if you are a tmnt fan, you can try this game out if you want, but in my opinion, there are a lot more exciting tmnt games out there that are worth a play.

Turtles From The Time???   orionfoxgibson
Finally.
After All These Years.
I Finally Completed it.
I Cant Believe I Actually Got To The Shredder Without a Game Genie When I Was A Kid. Never Beat Him Due to that one hit kill gun of his.
First a quick Dose of "Strategy" for any new players.
The action is only good with two of the turtles. Leo and Don...(the Blue one with swords and the purple one with the stick).
The others are just cannon fodder for the swimming section and the "Technodrome" maze. So, Although the game gives you the Idea that you have four characters Two are nearly useless. The two that are practically useless are so due to lack of range with their tools and lack of strength too. Way Uncool for a turtles game. The pause feature that allows you to cycle through your characters is very quick and glitch free but the screen refresh rate is poor. You can take a hit "un-pausing" without seeing it. Not the best way to travel. Your cannon fodder turtles are as good as wasted. The player is better off travelling with Leo the Blue till something needs an extra hit. Switch out with Don the Purple when you need a foe removed. The Power ups are the only thing that can make the two useless turtles regain any advantage. I suggest the boomerangs. The Boomerangs can be Shared or traded with the other turtles. Plus the boomerangs are about as powerful as Don the Purple's Stick.
The Best Power up is the Scroll (Stronger than Dons Stick) that can only be found in level 4 just after the Swimming Level.
Since You already have your "get around" Turtles with Leo and Don, I suggest giving them both all the boomerangs collected and Give Your Two "Cannon Fodder" Turtles The Scrolls and Saving them As Secret Weapons To Face the Technodrome Boss and The Shredder Boss.
The other Item that is essential to progress to Level 5 is the ROPE. that can only be found in a sewer in Level 4 again.
Finally the Torpedoes are another Item that are needed to clear the road blocks in Level 4. They are again Found in Level 4.
But There is no Hint That You Need To Find Them To Progress Or any Tip on where to find them.
That and That Alone is where I Draw the line with this game. And Refuse to call it anything other than an honorable mention for an attempt at a game.
A save feature or password system would have cleared up allot of flaws this thing had.
But those things are not present. You have to get through the whole game in one sitting.
The thing is well over 2 hours. Maybe even 4 or 5. (Particularly If you have no Idea where to go.) The Traps and re-spawning Foes Are one thing to deal with, BUT the Lack of knowing what to do next with Extreme Difficulty in this relentless onslaught is Where Most folks "Rage Quit" or Turn the game into some cult like religion and slavishly and endure the Sick Torture that this game is. For that and that alone I am willing to give this game a 2 for overall.
BUT.
Because it is apart of a famous franchise??? Many of us Fans suffered together and a few made it beyond the last level.
For me?
After I discovered the one hit kill from the final Boss?
I gave up. (Way back in the 1990's.)
With the save state feature this site and other emulators have made??? This game is now a good 6 overall. Without it?? I give it a 2.
The graphics are good for its time.
The Music is not bad.
The game play is fairly solid considering the lack of mercy.
The Story is Turtles versus the Shredder and the Foot-clan. Free the hostages. Eliminate the Leaders of the Foot. Nothing else seems to come to mind.
The mini bosses is a favourite part due to the lack of warning. But overall the lack of saves or password still stings me to this day.
I cant give this game a 9.
I have to give it a 6.
Good Luck.
This ones a rough one.

Teenage Mutant Turtles   tornadocam
Its Turtle time. In this review I'm going to be critiquing and reviewing Teenage Mutant Turtles.
Story: 7
The Turtles are ninjas that protect the earth from villains. The turtles mostly live in their home in the sewers with their ninja master Splinter. The Turtles have a human friend named April, who is a news reporter. One day the evil Ninja Shredder launches an attack for world domination. In the process he kidnaps April and challenges the Turtles to come and stop him. The Turtles soon discover that defeating Shredder's soldiers and stopping him is not going to be easy. Shredder has surprises and traps in store for the 4 reptiles.
I thought, the plot introduced the characters fairly well. We lean from the plot who the turtles are and who the bad guys are. So TMNT had a good plot to it, but it seems like some things were missing. First of all, this is your typical plot of having a damsel in distress that needs to be rescued. Other games have used that plot to death such as the Mario Series for one. I was really hoping for something more creative. Introducing Shredder was nice as we learn about his character in the plot. Having Shredder want to rule the world was also nicely done. I just wish they would have ventured away from the damsel in distress. But, maybe I have just played Mario too long and have grown tired of that. At the end of the day I give the plot a good 7 out of 10.
 Graphics and Controls: 9
The graphics in this game were awesome for an 8 bit game. To be honest, at times I thought I was playing a 16 bit game. The levels have nice backgrounds that fit their theme. The underwater level looked like it was on 16 bits. In a way the underwater level looked like Donkey Kong's Country for the Super Nintendo. The graphics were just that good in this game. The city levels look like an actual city. The sprites in this game were also awesome. The Turtles look very nice and their moves are done nice too. The enemies in this game look nice as well. If I have a complaint against the graphics it did seem like there was a few lags in the later levels. However, this was very minor.
The controls in this game were very good. All the Turtles have very smooth controls. Even when they do there combo moves. Not one time in the game does the controls feel stiff or sluggish at all. I will even compare to the controls to the Mega Man Series. Yeah they are that good. I give the controls and graphics a good rating of 9 out of 10. Had I not known any better I would have thought this was a 16 bit game and not an 8 bit game.
Sound: 8
The sound in this game is good. The way the Turtle's weapons sound is amazing. The weapons sound like they are doing serious damage. Also the sounds the enemies make when they are being attacked is nice, again letting the player know they are doing damage. The enemies attacks are even nicely done. The music is for the most part good. Some of the tunes have a nice theme. I also like it how the music changes when it is time to battle a boss. The only drawback I have to the sound is the short soundtrack. The soundtrack in this game is good do not get me wrong. But it would have been nice had they had more soundtracks. All the sewer levels have the same sound, and all the city levels have the same sound. I like to hear a variety of music in games. After, a while I kind of get tired of hearing the same tunes over and over again. Still, this game had a good soundtrack so I give it a good rating of 8 out of 10.
Addictiveness and Depth: 8
TMNT is a fun game with good replay value. I have found that this game was for the most part enjoyable to play through. For me personally I like to play the game through with a different Turtle and see how far I can go. I like to play as Leo or Donatello a lot. But you can also use a different turtle for a different stage which adds to the replay value. Now, they are some items to collect such as boomerangs, and other ninja items. You can also collect pizza for health. However the depth in this game is a little bit different. It is not like Mario or Mega Man games were there are tons of items to collect. The game has good depth because you can chose which turtle you want to play as. As I stated you can play through the game with one specific Turtle or you can mix it up. You can even switch turtles if you start running low on health. I give the replay value and depth to TMNT a good score of 8 out of 10
Difficulty: 9
The difficulty for this game was hard for me to rate. TMNT is a difficulty game because the enemy placement in this game just bury you. It is nearly impossible to go through this game without getting hit. Enemies will gang up on you, hit you from behind and even throw things at you. So you can lose health quickly in this game. On the other hand, the difficulty also is determined by which character you play as. Raphael and Michael Angelo are short range fighters. So if you are using those turtles you have to get close to your enemies to do a lot of damage. That can be very challenging and requires a lot of skills to pull off. Leo and Donatello are long range fighters with their weapons so they have an easier time in hitting enemies. Leo and Donatello can hit enemies before they get right in their faces unlike Raphael and Angelo. Still, this game requires skills to pull off and beat. I like games that challenge the player and require skills to master. I give the difficulty a good rating of 9 out of 10.
Overall: 8.7
TMNT came out around 1990 it might have been in 1989 when it came out. I remember my parents getting me this game when I was about 5 years old. I remember playing this game quite a bit when I was younger and I still like to play it to this day. TMNT came out right when the NES was at its peak. This game came out around the time Super Mario Brothers 3 and Mega Man 3 came out, those games proved to be big hits for the NES. TMNT is regarded as another smash hit from the same time frame. It was not surprising this game would be a huge hit due to the graphics, sound and difficulty. As I mentioned earlier in my review this game plays a lot like a 16 bit system. I find that remarkable that the makers of this game were able to provide that feel. This game was also the first game in the TMNT series and it really started the TMNT fanfare. Other Turtle games would come after this one in a few years. In fact, this game is credited to introducing the Turtles to mainstream popularity. After this game came out, TMNT merchandise started to be made and marketed. I guess that shows how popular this game was when it came out.
The negatives I listed are very minor and should not stop players from playing this game. Some players do not have a problem with the bad guy seeking world denomination and causing a damsel to be in distress. After, playing Mario games I kind of got tired of that plot being used again. I would have liked to have seen more creativity. The sound is mostly good accept that they could have added more soundtracks in this game. Other than those negatives this is a great game and should be enjoyable. But I you will be challenged if you play this game, which is not a bad thing. As far as recommending this game goes. I would recommend this game for anybody. It is a very good game and challenges your skills. If anybody is knew to the TMNT then I would recommend this game, because it is the one that started it all. Aside from the few negatives I mentioned you will find this is a fun and good game to play. I give TMNT a good overall rating of 8.70. I hope you take time to enjoy this good game.

Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles review   Zircron Swift
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, how that names brings back memories to so many people. I don't know why, but I can't remember much of the series as a kid. I remember watching it, but I just don't remember what happened, but it was popular. I remember my brother wearing like some clothe with holes in to pretend he was one of them, and I think we all did something like that as a kid. I was willing to give this game a go, despite all the Nerd's preaching of it being a terrible game and all that. This is Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. Oh yeah, not "Ninja". Here in England, it's "Hero" for some odd reason. Was there some Copyright infringement or something? Ninja sounds way cooler than Hero, if you ask me.
The game opens up with a awesome tune and a cut scene, one of the few games to use them. It shows all the turtles, them using their weapons and their names. It was only now I could appreciate how awesome their names are, especially Raphael. Then we see Splinter point with just one frame dedicated to that movement, and the screen moves over to Shredder, our main evil villain of the game. He kidnaps April. For those who don't know much about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter is the mentor of the Turtles, and taught them everything he knew. He's one of those loveable elderly people that still packs a punch with old age. And he's a rat.....yes a mutant rat. April is the human thrown into the plot to make the clash of humans and mutants a little more interesting. She is not a mutant, and wears an iconic yellow rain coat. So the goal is to rescue April, save the town from Shredders evil doing, infiltrate his base and take him out once and for all, preferably in that order.
So you start in a town, and you can walk around with an overhead view. There are man holes you can go down to progress to different stages of the level. There are also these tank things that when you touch them, you instant die, with the message "[Turtle's Name] has been captured". You then pick a different Turtle to continue the fight. As far as I'm aware, you can't get them back unless you get a game over. In essence, you have four lives, and three continues before going back to the start again. Every time you pause, you get different messages from Splinter and (when rescued) April, which mildly help at the best of times. You also get a map on the screen, which is really helpful when you get to Level 3. You collect pizza slices to regain health. One slice reals one bar, half a slice heals half a bar, and a full one heals all your health. You can change from turtle to turtle whenever you wish, so you van just get the weakest turtle out when you spot a slice and heal him, then switch back to one that has more health. You can still attack enemies in this overhead view, and it's quite comical seeing them explode when you hit them. It's the style of explosion, really. It tells me "YOU DEFEATED AN ENEMY. CONGRATULATIONS!!!"
As you enter a man hole, you enter a side scrolling platformer where enemies are out for your hide. Each weapon is more effective to enemies than others, so even though the Katana has more range, the Sai might be more effective to kill some enemies in there. As I absolutely love the Bo Staff, I'm picking Donatello. The Bo Staff is a personal favourite in this game as well, as it seems overall very effective and covers the most range. That isn't to say the others don't have their perks. The katana seems to "slice round corners" if you know what I mean, where the Bo is a clunky straight stab attack, not a swing. reminds me of the whip in Castlevania, maybe that's why I like it so much. That's a good thing about this game, they make beneficent uses, differences, advantage and disadvantages with how the weapons attack enemies. Stabs and swings are just different attack styles, they are different ways to play the game. If you want to be a master of this game, you gotta be kinda like Ninja Turtle Avatar and master all their styles of attacking and how their weapon works. I work best with the Bo, the the Katatan, then the Nun-Chucks, and finally the Sai. With this in mind, I use my strongest first till near death, then choose my weakest till a pizza slice. It works for me. It's good to see that they didn't use the range of the weapon as power, but having it a little like Megaman and the Robot Masters where one weapon is better to use against an enemy than it is to another, except you don't fight any Robot Masters and you don't gain their power-ups. Speaking of power-ups, some enemies drop weapons you can use as secondaries, again like in Castlevania. You press select to change between weapons, and they range from throwing stars to Sonic Booms.
Another thing I will praise highly is the controls of the game. They're a rare set, making you feel epic and awesome like a Ninja Turtle would be. You can jump and then attack upwards to defeat an enemy, and land with a downward thrust for another enemy. It's amazing. The first thing I thought when I jumped and attacked upwards was ":DDD Mind=blown". The hit frame for enemies and Turtles is fairly good, although it is a little unfair to the enemies as I could swear I hit an enemy with a weapon out of range. This is balanced with the poor hit frame of the electric weed things in Level 2. Also, whenever you hit your head on the ceiling, you kinda get trapped there, and lose a lot of potential distance. I think this was designed to make the player not jump to high in certain situations. Would a Ninja jump and hit his head on the ceiling when jumping a gap? No, and if he did do that, his head won't slide along it, he'll hit it and become a little dazed. So what you have to do is tab the jump button a little for small jumps, hold it for a bit longer for a medium jump, and hold down for a second to a large jump. It's not like a Megaman where you can control your height of the jump, it's designed to use different jumps for different situations. A smaller jump might make a narrow gap, but a bigger jump will fail you.
The graphics aren't that bad. They look good, but they seem a little sloppy to me. For some reason, they don't look polished to me. Maybe it's the background of some places that put me off. There is some fine detail in it, but there are often so many enemies on the same screen, they flicker and it's hard to appreciate them for what they are. That's the main problem, the flickering. A common problem when the screen is overloaded with sprites. When the screen exceeds eight (the maximum amount it can hold), they disappear to allow a ninth to appear. They reappear as that ninth one disappears to allow the one that disappeared to reappear, and all of the sprites try to do this at once, creating flickering, or something along those lines. This game will often have a lot of sprites on the same screen, and this problem will be very common throughout the game, often distorting the graphics and how you see them.
The music is very well done. The overhead view of the first Level seems quite cheerful despite a kidnapping, but that all changes when you enter a man hole. Kinda reminds me a little of Castlevania, dunno why. In face, this games style seems like a combination of Castlevania with its difficulty and attacks, and Contra with it's jumping and awesome controls. Who made this game? .....Konami?! Their symbol isn't on the cart or box, but it's copyrighted by Konami. Wow....any game Konami makes is awesome. Anyway, the music you hear when you complete a level fills you with that sense of accomplishment any good game can offer. I really feel good about myself when I complete a level, and it kinda gives me that magical sense of being able to help the Turtles in some way that adds to the sense of achievement.
That's another thing I love about this game, the difficulty. It has that "no push-over" sense that quite a few popular NES games have, like Contra, Castlevania and Megaman, which were all a pain to beat. This game is no different. It's challenging, and will most likely give you a huge sense of achievement if you can complete it. This is one of those games that back then, defeating it would have easily earned you a worthy hard core gamer title with your friends. However, some of the difficulty is done in a cheap way. At first, you don't notice it as you just think you suck, but after a while, you notice "hang on, that;s not right". Like in Level 2, there is a part underwater where you swim up and see a piece of that electric weed. You naturally go to the left, to stay as far away from it as possible, but when the screen scrolls up, there are these weeds on both sides. Oh yeah, real fair game. What's more, you could be bang in the middle, and the slightest touch to these weeds on the left will harm you, but you can touch the weeds on the right and not get harmed. How cheap and poorly coded is that? After a while, I have come to the conclusion that the game is unforgiving in it's attacks, even when the player is being careful at some stages. Despite this, I like the challenge very much, even if some of the hits are cheap.
Overall I give this game a 7.9/10     I can see why the Nerd hated this game, but truth be told, I think it's legitimately a good game. I like the challenge it gives, the style of attacks you have to adapt to, both you enemies and your own, and everything else about it. I enjoyed it, even if I did rage quit at one point, I'll most likely pick up that controller and try again. If you are a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you'll enjoy this NES game. If you like platformers, you'll still enjoy this game, just don't expect it to be a walk in the park. Like any Ninja, you must prepare for the road ahead.

Why? Just why?   Itachi9695
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an arcade classic and...wait a second. Sorry, wrong game, let's try that again. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES is a game that I wish I had never decided to play. Let's find out why as we begin my "TMNT Month" meaning this month, I'll be reviewing as many TMNT games as possible starting with this one.
Graphics
I know these are NES graphics, and that NES graphics aren't the best ever, but this game looks pretty bad, even for the NES. Super Mario Bros. 3 came out less than a year before this game and it looked amazing. Mega Man 2 was released December of 1988, just a few months before this games release and that looked amazing. This game was released in 1989, 2 years before Nintendo released the SNES, and this looks really bad compared to other games released on the NES. But, as we all should know, graphics don't make a game, so let's continue.
Sound
Admittedly, this game has some pretty good music, it's pretty much the one positive about this game. Sure, it's nowhere near as good as future TMNT titles, but it's alright. The sound effects though, sound mediocre at best. When I hit something with my weapon, for some reason, I don't feel like I've hit someone with that weapon. It sounds like I touched a button that makes dome sort of blip noise. Overall, the sound is alright, but certainly nowhere near the best.
Addictiveness
I would never play this game out of pleasure. The only reason I replayed this game was to do this review because the game is just that bad. I honestly never want to play this ever again. It's not addictive to me whatsoever and I advise staying far away from this game, but that's your choice.
Story
The first part is that April gets kidnapped and you have to save her. The second part is where Splinter is taken by Shredder and with April supporting you, you have to find him and rescue him. I'll be honest and say that this is the first game review I've done on a game I've never beaten so I can't tell you what happens after that point, but it's a basic story that's been used a few times in newer TMNT games as well.
Depth
I'm not sure just how much content this game has, because I never beat it, but it would appear that it's decently long and has quite a few levels.  The levels them selves however a quite short or at least the first few. It takes the Zelda II approach in that there is an over-head view for the "hub world" and 2D side-scrolling sections for the actual levels.
Difficulty
This is where the game really gets me, the difficulty. This especially applies to the massive difficulty spike after the first world when you get to the dam. The main reason it's difficult though is because of controls, so I'll be covering controls and gameplay here instead of a separate header. The overworld isn't too bad...unless you run into a tank. But you shouldn't as long as you go down the manhole right beside you, leading to a side-scrolling section. Before we continue, I would like to point out that when you die or hit start, you can choose a different turtle. You've got Leonardo, who has a decent reach with his weapons, Michelangelo, who has a shorter reach, but he's still decent, Raphael, who is the absolute worst character with his very short reach (In case you hadn't figured it out, the only difference between every turtle is their reach, the longer the better), and of course, Donatello, who is probably the cheapest character in the game and also has the longest reach. This pretty much means you should keep Donny alive for as long as possible. Back to the controls, moving is quite simple, yet it feels weird. Don't even get me started with the jumps in this game, I mean it's bad enough when you miss the jump because of a VERY low ceiling, but the enemies respawn every time you go offscreen, this means you have to kill them all over again just to attempt the jump. Now, imagine you miss again, this process repeats over and over until you finally make the jump. To put it simply, the difficulty is the main reason this game is so frustrating to me.
Overall
If you're looking for a TMNT game to try out and see if you'll like the series, this is not the game to start out with, I'll be reviewing those later. But if you've already established your fandom for this series, then feel free to at least give it a go. It's not something I enjoy, but others may like it. Overall, the main problem is the difficulty and controls and probably the fact that I played Turtles in Time before any other TMNT game, but I'll get to that game later on. I give this game a 5 out of 10. Up next, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the arcade game this time.
By the way, yeah I know that it's already near the end of the month and I just published this, but I'm going to get out the next few reviews as quickly as possible. See you next time!

You're a Claustrophobic!   benis
One of my favorite lines from any movie is from the first Ninja Turtles movie. The exchange is between Donny and Casey Jones
Donny - "You're a claustrophobic!"
Casey - "Want a fist in the mouth? I've never even looked at another guy before"
On to the game!
If you had an NES growing up then you've played this game. It's a fun but frustrating experience. Some of the features (or lack of) are hard to overlook but for the time they weren't too crazy. Some of the features in the game were pretty progressive.
Graphics: 6. The graphics are actually pretty decent most of the time but the slow down and blurry enemies are hard things to overlook. I hate that! But the heroes and enemy characters are recognizable. The environments are mostly pretty bright and detailed. But I can't get over the slow down and blurry enemies.
Sound: 7. Spoiler alert. There's not a single 'cowabunga' in the game. However, despite this, the sound is solid. Music is somewhat repetitive (like most NES titles) but each area has it's own beat so it's a good change of pace. The sound when you hit something is strange. It's like you're always hearing swords clanging together.
Story: 9. Who doesn't love the turtle story?? Shredder is trying to hurt innocent people. April gets kidnapped. Splinter gets kidnapped. As a kid, you understood this story. You knew who you were fighting. There's a reason every kid under 10 LOVED the turtles. The story kicked ass.
Depth: 7. This might be generous. I'll give it a 7 because of the ability to switch characters on a fly. This allowed you to keep a Turtle alive a little longer but it also enabled you to use different characters for different situations. Each weapon had it's strengths and weaknesses. Donny's Bo Staff is way overpowered since it's powerful and has a long range. But this was something unique to TMNT and added a little strategy to the game.
Difficulty: 9. All right, we all know this game is hard. But why is it hard. In order, the reasons for it's difficulty are as follows 1) Controls. Man, the controls are rough. Jumping is a chore sometimes and there's no shortage of cheap deaths when you get hit mid air and fall in a hole/spike pit. Why did they make it so hard to jump? No platforming should make jumping the weakest link. The hit detection is pretty good at least. 2)Lack of health. Where are all the 'zas! You can 'cheat' a little and refresh a pizza pickup by exiting and entering an area. Everyone knows that. But they are far and few in between and you usually need to spend more health just getting to it. 4) Respawning enemies. Man, you just can't kill these things! Backtracking is a nightmare. 5) No save feature. Just like Mario, you gotta play this baby from start to finish. But the game isn't terribly long so it's feasible.
I will say this about the Dam level. This is way overrated as the hardest stage that it's known as. Yes it's challenging but once you learn the pattern and where to go, it really isn't that difficult. The last level leading up to Shredder? Now THAT'S tough.
This game has a nostalgia effect going on for all of us reviewers. Pretty surprised this has a higher rating than TMNT2 and TMNT3. I'd give the edge to the others based upon the multiplayer alone but that's just my opinion.
Overall - good game that's a lot of fun but very flawed due to being one of the earlier NES games.

Unless you have a buddy for co-op play, this is your best Turtles game on NES   bsnowotter
This is the first of three Ninja Turtles games on the NES.  While the latter two somewhat successfully captured the charm of the excellent arcade game including cooperative play, Ultra Games made the somewhat bold decision to make this a one-player side-scrolling action adventure.  The result is a very challenging, very unique and interesting experience that no Turtles fan should overlook.
The graphics of the game are functional but not pretty, and the sound is alright.  The sound effects for each of the 4 turtle weapons is perfect and the music is fun and groovy.  Where this game shines is the ninja action and the surprisingly open level design.  There is an over-head view portion of each level that functions as a sort of hub for which side-scrolling area you must tackle, but there is often little guidance in the route you take to get to the end, and often you are given the choice of alternate routes or given an open world to explore, if you want to tackle unnecessary sewers and gain weapons for your arsenal in the process, you are welcome to do so.  This adds a great deal of replay value to the game as well as variety, breaking up the intense ninja slashing with some exploration and freedom.  I should also mention the notorious swimming portion of level 2, a segment I can beat every time nowadays but was challenging enough to torment many a frustrated child when the game was released.
Ultra Games perhaps achieved its finest accomplishment in bold game-design choices with the extremely bizarre and unique Nightshade for the NES, blending not only action and exploration but also point-and-click adventuring.  Fans of Nightshade may want to join the Turtles fan and check out this title.  Although, if you have a buddy, you may be better off teaming up and taking on one of the sequels for a more mindless, action-arcade experience.

TMNT   rebelyell
This is the first of many TMNT games. It might just be the best of them thou. This game has it all the foot clan, A dam that's rigged with bombs and a rat who turns human. From the start this game is hard, and only gets harder as you go. It's easy to lose a turtle from the start by getting ran over by a tank , then you have to get pass the foot clan. As you fight a man with a chain saw who might be the crazy Mr. Jones but that's just a guess . And if you save April The story just gets harder, This game is fun and will give you hours of game play.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cheat Codes

Extra Continues

Believe it or not the famous Konami Code works here as well. Though it won't give you extra lives it will give you extra continues. Just enter the following code at the title screen.

Giant Mouser boss glitch

The Giant Mouser at the end of level 4 can be beaten even more easily than normal with this trick. Just stand under him and wait for his mouth to open. When his mouth opens to reveal the "weak spot", pause the game. Unpause the game, and the Mouser's mouth will be closed again, but his weak spot will be slightly visible from behind his mouth. You can now hit it to cause damage while his mouth is closed! Repeat this every time he opens his mouth for an easy victory.

Easy way to restore power

Find a doorway that has a pizza slice or full pizza right at the beginning. Enter, grab the pizza, and exit. If you go back in the pizza will regenerate. Use this to restore power to all your turtles.

Kill Rockstedy Without taking a hit.

When you fight Rockstedy jump on top of the ledge on the right side of the screen, switch to Donatello and just attact downward. Everytime Rocksteady jumps he will take damage and you will get by without a scrape. This will work faster if you time your attacks with his jumps.

Kill Shredder while taking little to no damage.

When you make it to the final boss (Shredder) all you need to do is have Donatello or another Turtle that has the scrolls and position them on the lower right side of the screen (not on the ledge). When Shredder comes close jump up and attack, this will knock him back and he will then jump up towards your Turtle again. Just keep jumping and attacking in that one spot and he will never get close to you because the ledge in front of him will prevent him from getting close enough to touch you. The only thing you'll have to worry about is his gun which he only fires while stationary, so just jump over what he shoots at you.

Remove Crushers in Level 3

Go to the third level and hop in the Party Wagon. Whenever you see a pesky Crusher drive around, press SELECT. You will exit the car, and the Crusher should vanish from the screen.

Share Boomerangs

When you get the boomerangs, throw up to 3 of them in the air, then switch turtles, and have the new turtle catch them. The new turtle will be able to use those boomerangs without having picked up a boomerang icon.

As a huge fan of the original TMNT series, I enjoyed this game a lot, and still do. Sure the arcade games are fun, but this game had a ton more depth to it than just mashing buttons at endless enemies.

People that complain that this game is "so bad" crack me up. This is a pretty decent action platformer. People just like to complain that certain NES games are too hard. Sure it's not the best game on the NES, but it certainly isn't the worst.

This is a tough game, takes a while to get through, the other TMNT games are easier

I hate to be the Negative Ned here, but my God,this was an insult to the name,TMNT 2 was far better. Trust me,you will pull your hair out.

One of the few games that still will probably work on your old N.E.S. Very Well Made. Not Very Well Played due to insane DIFFICULTY .
super joe bros 10-18-12 - 06:41 PM
Yet, one of the hardest games I've ever played.
super joe bros 10-11-12 - 04:25 PM
Why did AVGN call this game Cowaf***ingpieceofdog**** and the Irate Gamer a piece of Cowabunga-s***? it's fun.

You know, although the AVGN had a mean disposition on yhis game, it's not really bad at all. He even said the AVGN reviews shouldn't be taken seriously.
