Super Turrican Review
Among some home consoles are some real gems. Some are found and shown to the world, while others were popular yet not quite polished as the others. Yet some gems remain almost seem undiscovered. These are the dark horses of the gaming console. While some have found them and have enjoyed them immensely, they aren't shown to the world and become quite hidden and not talked about a lot. These kind of games are really good to those who seek something out of the ordinary, which is what these games partly were. One of them is Super Turrican. And this one keeps pooping up like a bad penny. I can't really get enough of this game. Maybe it's because I haven't beaten it yet. that's going to change. I'll just set it to "easy" *does just that*.....Lets look into Super Turrican!

So the story is (and is told as an opening) that the planet Katakis (odd name), which is mostly harmless (not to be confused with Earth, sorry =P), has been taken over and is now being ruled with an iron fist by an evil force known as "The Machine"....who looks bigger than the planet itself. The Avalon 1 detects this and goes into the planet to destroy The Machine and free those imprisoned. That's nice of you. Want a cup of tea before you go? So you must go through four different stages to get to the core of The Machine and bring Justice to this peaceful planet. It's not a bad story, but it seems somewhat rushed just to make a reason to make a game. I mean, Katakis? Seriously? But I digress.

You are in a Turrican Army Suit. A one man army suit ready to be donned and ready to fight evil. You have a sort of nuke ability which destroys all monsters within the area of the blast, but it can't go through walls. Hey, don't look at me, I didn't make it. Besides, they care about the environment. You start with three of those, with more to collect through out the game. You also have a Medusa Lazer, which turns your enemies into stone for a while (it's really a Freeze Ray, but it looks like they get turned into stone, so I prefer to call it a Medusa Lazer). Along with that, you get a choice three weapons. The wide range Fire Blaster, the thin but powerful Lazer, or the Bouncing Balls of Plasma, which split in half for every wall they hit, and rebound in a diagonal direction. Great for corners, but rather weak. By choice, I mean "wait till you get". You start with the fire blaster, but you can get weapons according to the colour of balls around the level.

If you have the same weapon and get the same colour, you'll find that it has been upgraded. You can upgrade them five times for maximum damage. And you don't lose your power if you change to a different weapon! When you get that colour again, you'll find that it was exactly were you left it at. But if you die, then your weapon gets down-graded a level....Awww =(      An interesting thing to point out is there are some enemies that you can jump on to kill them. Gee....I wonder where they got that idea? Although it does add a nice touch, is helpful at times, and is quite realistic.

If your a gunfire maniac like me, and like to fire endless and unnecessary rounds of bullets all the time, you might find that beneficial to you in this game (YAY ^^). Hidden in every level are loads of these containers. You just need to hit them. And there's only one way to find out where they are.....FIRE LIKE A MANIAC! If you fin them, you can either use them to reach higher places (as they work as platforms), or just hit them over and over for weapons, shields (gives you temporal invincibility), and additional Nukes. These are very helpful to get to hard to reach places to get things like 1-UP (although common, is a must for future levels).

I must say, the graphics for this game are particularly good for a SNES game. Always bright even in dark and gloomy places, more than decent animations and enemy designs, and impressive background detail. The music is a thing of beauty here. Music that not only match the mood and difficulty of the place in the game, but also seems to match that of the level design. The Factory levels have that machine feel to it, while the Alien level gives a sense of being with a different race altogether, but also the intensity of being close to the end. It can be easy to put that in enemies and the background, but to be able to imprint it in music? Now I'm impressed. The design of the levels are also unique in their own way. The first level has winds that blow you back with lightening to strike you if you don't keep moving. That's quite a steep curve for the first level.

The difficulty is pretty challenging. Having an easy or hard difficulty doesn't change how many enemies there are or how much damage they deal, it's just about how many lives and continues you get. The controls are a great, although a little tricky to move with the Medusa Lazer and then quickly change to your weapon while trying to not activate the Nuke, but you'll get used to it if you make it your strategy. *moves about uncomfortably*  it's a hard game to complete.....even on easy *tried not to look at the screen*.....Ok fine, I confess! I never beat this game. I can get to the Alien Trains with some trouble and that's it. I can't get passed it! I've played games that are hard, and I have either beaten them or stopped. Mostly it's due to terrible controls or unfair elements. Ninja Gaiden was one I never completed without cheating, but I could accept that as it was near impossible. This however, I feel shamed not to complete this one, though. If only I could jump a little higher, or if those platforms were a little closer, then maybe, just maybe.....*looks at the cheats on the main page for this game*....I could.....Level Skip? I'll be right back.

*about 40 minutes later* YES! I did it! I finally beat it! I just skipped the Alien Trains level and did the rest legitimately. It's nice that these games have some cheats that let you pass levels that are just killing you and giving you game overs. It might have been hard, but I'll tell you, the music at the end is so worth beating the game to listen to.

Overall, I give this game a 9.1/10  The graphics and music really work well together to create a sense of being the level itself. The range of weapons and how you obtain them make a good way to improvise with what you got, as your bound to get what you don't need later in the game. This seems like an unmarked classic and would be nice if more people knew about it. Even though it's hard, and has a killer level near the end, it's fun and challenging for the first few levels, but doesn't play nice guy for long and ups the difficulty for the veterans.
