Super Mario RPG : Breaking the SNES   janus

In order to celebrate Mario's 10th anniversary in the Nintendo universe, the game maker made an alliance with RPG giant Squaresoft and created Mario's last adventure in the 16-bits era: Super Mario RPG, the Legend of the Seven Stars. The result is technically impressive but might leave some RPG lovers wanting for more.

Graphics: 10/10

When writing a review of Final Fantasy VI, I said it was the epitome of 16-bits graphics. That's because I completely forgot about Mario RPG. When I first saw pics from the game, I thought it was a preview for the upcoming Nintendo 64.

The graphics in this game are the best of the 16-bits era, surpassing many early 32-bits games – even Final Fantasy VII in some ways as characters aren't as pixelated. The environment in completely in 3D and characters can move 360 degrees – at times you can see them shake their heads violently, even better than in FF VI. Unlike FF VI, Mario RPG's use of 3D offers much smoother graphics – the mine cart run looks more realistic than the escape from the Magitek plant. Even Bowser's kidnapping of Princess Toadstool looks better, although the team’s falling into Smithy’s plant was a bit overdone. In a few instances, you can see the COMPLETE overworld map, which was quite an accomplishment for 16 bits – you usually can only see as far as your airship. Only the Donkey Kong Country series was able to achieve that. Super Mario World doesn’t count since you had to press start to actually see the map.

Cities are very-well drawn and town folks interact nicely with Mario. Unlike many games, there is diversity; the people inside the Mushroom Kingdom don't look like the ones from the Nimbus Kingdom or the Mole people – there's even a city of Monsters where you can interact with Thwomps or Koopa Troopas. House have realistic proportions (inside vs outside) and perspective is logic. Finally – for the few times it happens – weather affects the screen; in Final Fantasy VI, Zozo's rain doesn't seem to make the city any darker than other towns, although the town itself had darker colors to begin with.

Inside battles, we can see that Square learned from Chrono Trigger. Enemies come in very close contact to you (although they don't touch you as in Phantasy Star IV). They are very-well drawn and detailed and move very fluidly – one of them is a bow and throws arrows in a very orderly manner. Valentina, on her side, has even an… explicit way of taking damage. Their magic too pushes the SNES to its limit by filling up the screen entirely. Finally the backgrounds in which you fight are dependent on where you are; in the final battle there are creepy-looking rocks as you have been dropped underground, whereas fighting in Smithy’s Plant show the metallic floors on which you walk.

On the ally side, each character possesses many different weapons, each with a different move – Mario's hammers differ among each other, and the Princess’ gloves look different too. Some of them, like Geno's guns and Bowser's doll throwing, actually touch the enemy. Special mention to Princess Toadstool's arsenal: a fan, an umbrella, a pan and a slapping glove.

Finally, magic/technics push the SNES to its limits. Being a Mario game, you have some classics like Mario's fireball (its strongest form looks impressive) and his jump. Bowser's also look impressive, especially the Bowser Crusher (the mechanical doll he throws in Super Mario World). But the best ones are Geno's, which take the whole screen like his flash and beam.

(Little cameo: There is a room in Booster's Castle where you can revert back to Mario's 1985 alter ego, showing you the incredible improvement in graphics).

Music: 6/10

Since the game was co-produced with Square, I was expecting Final-Fantasy quality music. It's not to that level, but it's still enjoyable.

Since it's a Mario game, there are some classical tracks you can hear like ordinary zones, underground and battle against Bowser (Super Mario 3). They have a nice modern touch – especially Bowser’s theme, and the underground theme’s synth rocks! – although they aren't life-like orchestration like other Square games.

Most other tracks are (and it's not meant to be a bad thing) cartoonish like Earthbound – as opposed to “serious” and dramatic/epic music like Final Fantasy IV’s The Dreadful Fight or Dragon Quest VI’ At the Castle. The ordinary battle theme is quite addicting and joyful, and the “ordinary” boss music has an interesting jazzy flavor. The boss battle against Smithy's spawns is more elaborate but still in line with the light spirit of Super Mario's tracks. That track is probably the most elaborate one; most of them loop after 30 to 45 seconds usually, which was a little disappointing after FF VI. I found most of them to be unmemorable.

Sound effects are as real as they can get for a 16-bits game. Mallow’s cymbals sound realistic-ish, Princess Toadstool’s slapping gloves sound genuine (although her frying pan could have been improved) and Bowser’s ball-and-chain weapon has enough bite to it (his laughter is good too, reflecting his huge size, but Kefka’s was much more memorable). For magic, Mario’s fireballs sound “bigger” as the level increase, Mallow’s thunder sounds realistic and Geno’s beams sound “magical” as they should. There is also a neat distinction between regular and frog coins, which is nice.

Finally, adding to the “cartoonish” tone of the game, you will often hear the “last part” of a character that dashes past you (you know, the whistling sound. You won’t hear the sound of their legs giving them the push).

Slight negative: the sound effects in the mine cart run are quite annoying, especially the “mushroom boost”.

Addictiveness: 9/10

If you like sidequests, Mario RPG is one of the best games for that of the 16-bits era.

There are tons of things to do in this game, spread out through the game and not clustered at the end like Chrono Trigger. There are numerous “frog coins” hidden everywhere – you sometimes have just one chance to get some – with which you can buy very useful and rare items. If you have enough dexterity, you can get special prizes for using Mario's Super Jump at least 30 and 100 consecutive times (speaking of the jump, I read that its strength depends on how often you use it rather than your level).

When you go back to Bowser's Keep, a few of the doors have action-packed challenges like a 3D rendition of Donkey Kong's barrel throwing (you even have to face him at the top of the room), trying to make your way on invisible floors and (very) slow-moving platforms lying just above lava. There are also tons of hidden treasures everywhere which can only be found by jumping right under them. They may contain coins, frog coins or other useful goodies.

As with other Mario games, there are also time trials. Be it by climbing up a hill by jumping on flying koopas, escaping a mine in a cart or walking on donut lifts, you will get prizes if you can make it under a certain time. Speaking of time trials, you can also race Yoshi against his nemesis Yoster. Finally, you can also challenge yourself on a water-based barrel run, both for time and coins collected.

Story: 8/10

It was just another typical day in the Mushroom Kingdom: Princess Toadstool was sitting quietly in the garden, Bowser was passing by to kidnap her and Mario came to the rescue.

However, something else happened after the rescue this time: a giant sword surrounded by stars came down from the sky and inserted itself in Bowser's keep. Rushing back from his Pipe House after being ejected from the Keep, Mario finds out that “Smithy's Gang” has seized the castle and destroyed the Eastern Access to it. So he has to walk all the way around the world in order to defeat the Gang...

On his way back there, he meets Mallow, an orphan “tadpole” who will be looking for his parents (if they are alive); Geno, a visitor from “abroad”; Princess Toadstool, who doesn't want to be kept locked inside the Mushroom Kingdom Castle; and Bowser, who will make an unlikely alliance with Mario in order to reclaim his castle.

Despite having a story that's a little childish –
Mallow-the-lone-orphan finds out that's he's the heir to Nimbus' throne
and the Star Road that grants wishes has been broken – it incorporates interesting elements. Once she joins the party, Princess Toadstool isn't that weak, helpless victim waiting for her rescuer. Also, Bowser's pride is hilarious at times. Instead of joining Mario and his party, he'd rather say that Mario joins the Koopa Troops.

Speaking of humor, I believe this is the strongest point in the game's scenario. Some lines like Booster's “Are you leaking, my dear?” (to a sobbing Princess Toadstool), Mallow's “Who do you think you are? Bruce Lee?” (to Mario, who wants to rush and rescue someone) and some of Valentina's line will get stuck in your head. On Star Hill – where you see people's wishes – you find obvious ones like “I want to be as good as my brother Mario” (I wonder who that is...); you also see more serious ones like Mallow's parents wishing for their son's safe return. A special mention to the Axem Rangers, who make funny comments when they are destroyed (the pink one complains about her leaking makeup), and the Hammer Brothers, who sound like Robert Deniro in Taxi Driver. Let's not forget about King Nimbus, who's a COMPLETE Mario groupie, making the Queen embarrassed.

Depth: 7/10

Despite a simple storyline RPG veterans might find uninteresting and simple – I finished the game in a week – Square and Nintendo have nonetheless gave it enough depth to make it worth your attention.

I'm still amazed at how many previous Mario games references were put without being annoying. You see old enemies like the piranha plants, Shy Guy, goomba, koopa, Magikoopa, Thwomp, Birdo, the Hammer Brothers... Of course, Toad is around and gives you advice throughout the game to make your life easier – your Mario RPG 101 teacher if you will.

You also see the Mushroom Kingdom from another angle, which is refreshing for a change. Although not as big as the one in Super Mario 3 – it was divided in eight parts – it offers more interactions. You also learn that the Star Road is what makes your wishes come true. Without it, neither of Bowser's dearest wishes (kidnap the Princess and reclaim his castle) will come true, forcing him to join forces with Mario (or is it the opposite?)

Finally, there is enough character development around Geno and Mallow to make these characters enjoyable. Geno is on a quest to repair the Star Road, whereas Mallow, when he learns that he's not a tadpole (!!), goes on a quest to find his parents. He eventually finds them, and they give a big hand to Mario's party in their quest.

Difficulty: 4/10

Overall, this game is pretty easy. Once you master timed hits – hit the attack button just as you’re about to attack/being attacked by the enemy – you can virtually avoid any physical attacks and do 100% critical attacks, physical or magical (that’s the secret to get 35 to 100 Super Jumps). In short, you can almost take away the Hammer Brothers (the first boss) in two rounds.

Reaching the maximum level (30) is also pretty easy, making level grinding a little less tedious. Speaking of leveling up, it's very easy to gain level when you find an invincibility star. You just run around and knock enemies – including bosses if you run quickly enough – and gain easy experience. Once in a while, you can even double your experience by finding Yoshi (with savestates, it's a given). Oh, and allies not in your party fighting still gain experience and therefore level up.

However, for players not used with Mario-style games like me, the game can be challenging at times. Climbing up by jumping of the flying koopas requires both precision and 3D perspective that was hard to master at the time. Same thing inside Bowser's keep: if you don't jump in a timely manner, you will burn your behind and lose a try. The quiz doors (counting barrels, answering general questions about the game, playing solitaire) are also challenging for everyone.

Finally, there's an annoying feature about magic: it's shared. Flower points are a pool used by EVERY member, so plan using your spells ahead and bring plenty of restoring items.

In short, Super Mario RPG is a must-try for both platform and RPG lovers. It incorporates an excellent mix of both, has out-of-this-world graphics (for the time) and has a very good sense of humor. It was able to include many references to past Mario (and other Nintendo) games that will evoke fond memories and humor that's not found in many games of the time.

Very Unique Mario Game   rcarter2
When you think Super Mario, you probably think platforming, goomba bouncing, turtle shell throwing, Yoshi riding, and block breaking. There is an almost endless list of things you associate with Mario, but if you haven't played this game, turn based RPG is not likely on that list. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was the first time we saw Nintendos most popular character in the RPG world. Upon introducing this game, there was a lot of skepticism about whether or not it would work. It didn't take long for this game to become an instant smash hit and in many people's lists of the top Mario games of all time. For good reason too, as this game, in my opinion, is near perfection.
Graphics: 10
Even though the SNES has graphics that the NES could never surpass, it still followed the same trend of side-scrollers or top views in most of the games. But Super Mario RPG pushed the capacity of the SNES graphics to the max, as it was one of the first games for the SNES to be played completely in a 3D environment using polygons that N64 used. The characters, animations, and environmental elements are crisp and clean, as well as eye popping. Having Mario have access to 8 direction ranges of movement made it possible to make this game huge and more interactive than any SNES game I have ever played. The graphics are colorful, non repetitive, and downright beautiful. When it comes to the SNES, you can't get better graphics than this.
Sound: 10
The developers of this game certainly put a lot of work into this game. A lot of times, you see good graphics at the sacrifice of music and sound. This is not the case here. Starting with the music, this game is a masterpiece. Almost every location has it's own unique music, none of which are irritating. As a matter of fact, most of it is delightfully upbeat and fun. It does such a good job at setting the mood of the location you are in, as well as the situation. Best of all, this game does not overpower the sound effects with the music. Usually, with a game that has awesome music, you can literally count how many different sound effects there are. In Mario RPG, the sounds are just as well done as the music. You get your classical sounds of the *BOING* in Mario's jumping and the jingle of collecting coins, which reminds you that this is still a Mario game. But there are hundreds of different sound effects ranging from the various attacks and environmental sounds. The developers showed great dedication to making the sounds and music perfect in this game.
Addictiveness: 10
This tends to be common with a lot of RPG games, and this one is no different. Because this is a turn based RPG game, the battles themselves can get repetitive, but that doesn't even hinder the score. The story is so fascinating, you find yourself playing just to see what the heck is going to happen next. It is like a book you can't put down or a movie you can't pause. Along with the story, there are so many extra things you can do such as mini games or side-quests that there is not a dull moment in the game. What is best is that even after you beat the game, it is pretty much just as fun doing it all over again when you decide to.
Story: 10
You would think the things I have said about this game shows the best aspects of this game, but that isn't remotely so. This game can have the things I have discussed up till now and still fail. It could lack in graphics, sound, and addictiveness and still be great because the story is amazing. At first, it starts as your typical Mario game where Bowser has kidnapped the princess, and it is your job to rescue her. But in the middle of the rescue, everyone gets separated, and your journey really begins. This moves from a mission to rescue the princess to a quest to restore the wishes of everyone and save the world from an enemy so great, he is the first person to kick Bowser out of his own castle, forcing him to team up with you. Through the game, you will gain four other characters in your team, each with their own goals, but their paths become bound together. The story is more unique that any previous Mario game as well as extremely well developed. You have no weird gaps or loopholes in the story, and manages to make you care about what happens.
Depth: 10
This game has a super massive world that has things to interact with everywhere you go. Though the game has a fairly linear path, you are always welcome to go back to any point you wish to do something else. The games main quest itself also deviates from the main quest to obtain all the stars, which are points where you find a completely new short story line to complete. Unlike many RPG games where you mostly just get to buy stuff, level up, and strengthen yourself with better equipment, Super Mario RPG gives you so many mini games to keep it fresh all the way through. For example, you can participate in Yoshi races, collect beetles on Booster Hill, gamble in the Great Guy Casino, ride a cart in the minds, or compose music in the Tadpole Pond. You will also see that you will not do everything you are able to the first time playing through it. To truly do everything you can, you will have to backtrack to check it all out again. There is not a lack of things to do.
Difficulty: 4
No game thus far has been absolutely perfect in every game, and difficulty is this games weakness. At first, this game can seem difficult if you aren't used to turn based RPG games. Those who are or those who play this game to a certain point know that this game is only as hard as you make it. Any time you have trouble with a particular enemy, it is a matter of time rather than skill that will get you through it. All you ever have to do is fight weaker enemies until you level up enough to whip whatever enemy is giving you trouble. If you manage to max out the level, even the final enemy is a cakewalk as long as you choose your items well.
Overall: 9
This is one of my all time favorite games because it is perfection in almost all the things I find important in a game, story always being at the top of the list. If you like Mario AND Final Fantasy games, you will love this as well. It may be different from other Mario games, but keeps enough elements to stay true to the franchise. It has an amazing story, countless things you can do, and the best graphics, music, and sound effects you can get out of the SNES. The only downfall is that it is easy if you remotely know what you are doing, but for those who don't like really difficult games, that is a plus. The game will take you hours and hours to completely get through, but it is worth every second.

A delightful gem of its time, half forgotten, developed by FF legends   MrEon
Personal Thoughts and Feelings on the Game:
Man this takes me way back. Mid 90's or so, the game had been out for awhile and I saw it now and then,it was of a age where I was first seriously getting into RPGs. Dungeons and Dragons, Bauldur's gate, Zelda, and a few others (Not Final Fantasy though, oddly enough) when I picked out this little title from a old video rental shop. (Does anyone else remember those? Cassettes everywhere, SNES and Sega cartridges everywhere) And I was restricted to just 1 game, being only 12 or so I didn't have much cash from my benevolent parents, so it was a hard choice between Mario RPG, and Contra. In retrospect I'm glad I got Mario RPG.
To me, it was Iconic. After all, in the world of video games what is more iconic at times then our portly plumber friend? I grew up with him with Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario 2, and of course 3 and Super Mario World. So when I started playing it I noticed the name 'SquareSoft' as the makers and though That's a weird name', but in my youth I was woefully ignorant of Squaresoft and their power over video games.
As I play though I'm delighted by the '3D' aspect of the game, it was still rather new in video games so I felt so technologically superior to friends who didn't play it. And Mario, laughably at times, was the silent hero (aren't most in RPGs that Squaresoft make?) in the Mushroom kingdom, which was beautifully realized in the first epic quest, where, you can guess, you have to rescue the Princess Peach from the nefarious Villain Bowser.
However, after the battle something rather strange happens. A sword, nearly as large as the castle Bowser lovingly created, shatters star road! And sinks itself to the midst of the castle, sending Mario flying.
Such was the introduction to the game, one that made me happily eager to play more! Now, I won't reveal too much of the story after this, but the events that followed made me laugh, frustrated the dickens outta me, and even made me go 'awww' now and then. To my delight there was much more to do then what you might expect in other RPGs (See 'Random Battle endless') Side quests, unique ways to battle enemies (being able to reduce damage with a well timed button press), exploring alternative story lines, and even fight beings from another (Final Fantasy) Dimension.
Now some people moan and whine that there is a level 30 level cap, but reaching it is difficult by the end of the game (See 'Grinding' if you are determined to get that level) but the game is balanced where it isn't too easy, or too hard, but steadily ramps the difficulty up making you think and plan your moves ahead of time (and stock up on healing goodies). The bosses especially were fun, and challenging, each having a weakness of some sort to exploit, and strength to carefully avoid. And each character you control (up 3 active and 5 total) earn new powers as they progress, from Mario's super jump, to other characters powers you'll learn to rely on again and again.
A personal word of advice, search everywhere and everything, you'll never know what you'll find, and some can be truly delightful surprised for the game.
Review of the Game:
Graphics: 10
Of its time and era, they were top notch. With a 2 1/2D Isometric perspective it allowed you to see the world beautifully rendered. The colors, as in all Mario games were bright, vibrant, and fun. From the goombas, to worse enemies in the game there is nothing to complain about in the graphics department. There is of course the 'Same enemy, different color' scheme here, but considering that they had I believe 30 some odd unique enemies, it could be forgiven to recolor a couple. Some great special effects included parallexing, and nifty animations in attacks from fireballs to lightning and more. Everything was clear and easily recognized for what it was supposed to be, which really is that much of a surprise for quality from Squaresoft?
Sound: 10
To me, this was perfect in so many ways. There were classic Super Mario tunes that we all know and love, plus a couple 'hidden' tunes you could here in Cameo (Someone from a 'Legend' shows up in the game ;) ) and the battle music was, while only had a couple tracks, fit the mood from wilderness, to mines, to a sunken ship (where oddly you never drown), as well as some unique music for the more epic boss battles. Personally I wish they released a sound track of this game, it was that good. And for those of you musically inclined, you could actually MAKE  your own songs (not very long ones, but still!)
Addictiveness: 8
I've played, and beaten the game a number of times simply because its such a fun game. Now, is there any end game content? Sort of yes. There is a casino (if you can find it, its rather well hidden) and secrets to explore as well as hidden chests EVERYWHERE! (you can buy a locator ring that tells you if you're in the same room with one) Not to  mention side stories and the number of mini games you can play are always fun. From song making, to white water river swimming, puzzle solving and more, you can even buy a video game from a kid and try to beat his high score, catch bugs (and sell for loot) and more, good times to be had by all!
Story: 10
While many people do not consider this story canon to the true Mario universe let me ask you this... other then Mario saves princess peach from Bowser (or some other baddie) has the world EVERY been the same? The answer is no (and in some games you don't even have to save the princess) But this is defiantly a unique approach to the game, and you'll see it poking fun at other games or popular media at the time (like the power rangers... yes, the guys in tights and run around in dino bots) But the story IS engrossing, and starts simple (save the princess Mario!) and gets stranger along the way, and opens up multiple avenues to explore, from bosses, to side stories. And the music and visuals fit it perfectly, at times you even feel sad for the inhabitants of the world and more then once will have 'What in the Heck' moments. (See: Boosters Tower... that's all I'll say)
Depth: 9
The game is HUGE. I've mentioned it already a few times but there are side quests galore, hidden goodies to find, rare currency to hoard (for some of the best items in game), mini game sot play and beat high scores of (and get loots from), puzzles to solve, mazes to go through, monsters to beat, including rare and very hard bosses (there is one boss that is optional and hard to unlock but is HARDER then the endgame boss... and defiantly has the air of Final Fantasy to it.) So yes the game has a great deal of depth of things to do, mine cart riding, bullet bouncing, Dojo fighting, and my favorite, finding super stars and killing EVERY THING by touching it Muhahahahahah! (and yes, you get the experience for it, so its a mad dash to kill everything while you can :D )
Oh and I dare you to not to yell out 'Stop... Hammer time!' when Mario gets his first hammer weapon. Its a great moment.
Difficulty: 7
This one I had a hard time rating. Its defiantly easy in the start and hard in the end and is scaled quiet well to progression through the story. So if you blow through the story, you'll have a bit of a hard time with later bosses and hard enemies, but for you completionists or side questers you'll still have a good challenge waiting for you. The controls take a little getting used to, but by the first hour of the game, you'll have understood them, though mastering takes a little time to accomplish. Pushing the button at the right time can reduce damage on you, or increase the damage you do on a special or even standard attack, so you get a sense of the games rhythm along the way.
Something they did I thought was rather clever in making the game challenging without being impossible is limiting your inventory space, items don't stack, so you are limited to the number of items you have the restore HP FP (flower points which do magic) status cures, and revival items, so you have to balance your needs out well, especially alter in the game. You also have a limit on the amount of coins used in the game, only up to 999 (after all, what other currency would there be besides coins?) So saving up a massive amount of coins won't do much for you, but there is plenty to spend it on, from weapons and armor, to fancy hotel rooms with room service (which actually give you a selection unique items)
So yes the game can be hard, but the distinction here is that it isn't impossible, and a rather good time to be had!
Overall Review:  9.7
This game belongs in the classics of gaming history. And on the top 100 RPGs of all time made I think. It was fun, beautiful, sounded wonderful, and the story was engrossing with memorable characters and epic boss battles, all the things that make a great RPG, don't let the fact that its a 'Mario' game throw off if you are a hard core RPG enthusiast, this game is well worth your time to explore and have fun with. Besides, would Mario every steer you wrong? So this is a definitive must play for any enthusiasts of RPgs, or Mario, or someone looking for a good time without having to worry too much about RPG details (like is my attack high enough to hit that, or will I do enough damage per second?)
Give it a try and pick up your hammer, and prepare for a good time in a unique and wonderful rendition of Mario Land where you find all sorts of familiar, and new faces.
Though ONE personal gripe I have, honestly. Yoshi made it, but why didn't Luigi? I mean, really? .

A Childhood Memory   Kelgate
As a child, the Super Nintendo also known as the Snes was always fighting for my attention with the Sega Genesis and winning for the most part, and here is one of the games that did just that. Super Mario RPG, Legend of the Seven Stars was different then most Mario Games back in the day, while most were plat formers this one decided to try and branch out to a different genre in the hopes to attract more people to the ever growing loyal Fan base. I was already a fan at the time, playing games like Mario Kart and Super Mario World, but this game... brought my love of RPG to the forefront and gave me a game I will never.... ever... forget.
Graphics:
9/10; The SNES was known for putting together good images and a display of strong ram power for the graphics to be different then the NES. This showed the hype of the graphics to the forefront, the characters were shown and you knew which character was what. Mario, the idealistic plumber for example, was what you knew him as, and you could see from the red to the mustache that he looked every bit like him. Could you say the graphics were full rendered 3D-Images? Some may gripe over it, but I think for the power of the SNES, this was as close to 3D as you were going to get. Each character you fought or you controlled was rendered all around, and it was the first time we saw many of our beloved characters in such a vibrant way. If you consider the amount of effort it had to take, showing us new locations and having to bring them to life, I say they did great in this department.
Sound:
10/10; I want to paint a picture for everyone, you are in the forest.. Its like a labyrinth in which you have to know the exact way to go but even if you think you do? You end up taking a wrong turn and going to the right, instead of the left! Now with that going on, you are being attacked constantly by enemies and the never-ending notion you are going to have to be stuck here forever.. And in a way... you don't mind. The reason?... Is very clear, the music that plays in that level, and the music that plays through the entire game is an orchestra of good melodies that pulls on your emotion. The music is upbeat, uplifting, providing you hope that you will get out of the forest and fight the boss that pulled you into this travesty of a maze. The sound, and the music plays on your emotion and are critically eclaimed. There is a reason that the song, even through the test of time and other songs by this game are featured on youtube and are parodied to this day.
Addictiveness9/10; Have you ever felt the joy of jumping on Koopas as a kid? Now combine that with the ability to jump on them multiple times in a single combat! Not only are you playing with the plumber with the highest leap for a man! You get other, unique, and playable characters that were just made for this very game! The combat is very RPG orientated with turn base combat, where you get to decide to attack, use an item, escape or use an ability.[Mario gets to Jump, Geno gets to shoot and so forth.] The added joy of having different items that can be equipped and used to save your life, like the Pick me up adds a different dimension to the game. There are a ton of things to do in this game, besides fighting shy guys, Koopas or Hammer Brothers such as Mini Games or even trying to collect coins. The only time you will be disappointed is when you finish the game, but its only temporary before you start a new game and try and beat it again!
Story: 10/10; So we've seen the same old tune for three Mario Games right?.. Mario needs to save the Princess from Bowser/King Koopa to restore order to the Mushroom Kingdom.[Except for Mario 2, which we won't get into full detail with.] So, tell me how does this game start off?.. You are going to Bowser's castle, beating up the cronies that are trying to delay you while you are trying to beat up Bowser and rescue Princess Toadstool... So why did I give this a 10/10? Its simple, the game makes it a joke to have this as the very first thing you do, knowing full well its going to swerve you just as you are victorious into defeating Bowser... A Giant Sword comes from the sky and lodges into the castle sending everyone from it. Now, a giant sword is definitely unique and different to the Mario Universe and you quickly realize that a new villain as emerged to take over called the Smithy Gang. This wouldn't be a big problem except the Grand Star has broken into seven distinct pieces and thus, it is your job to get it back but be wary, one of them is in Bowser's castle and the bridge is broken for now. The fact that the developers took a leap of faith and brought in a brand new villain, and a different plot then what we are use to seeing was like a breath of fresh air to the universe. Sure, you are still battling some of the same enemies but once you get to a boss, or a land where there are creatures you haven't seen before, you know you are in for a new experience.
Depth: 10/10; Now I mentioned a bit about depth in the story compartment so just let me touch up on this section with a review of the review so I can show you how much there is to do, and how much layers are into this game. You have a game, with a different plot, different characters, all of which had to be molded and put into a 3D-like environment. You have seven different worlds, which has to be fully fleshed out, and require a map and reasoning to go there. We have different bosses, and mini-games in which we can do and special coins in which we need to collect. On top of that, there are different equipment for each type of character, like a hammer, Chain-Chomp and my personal favorite.. I believe a frying pan. Not to mention, at the end of it all, you will be getting a heavy dose of references which you will get right away, or need a second play through to figure out so you are always left with wanting more of this fabulous game.
Difficulty: 8/10; I know, usually people don't rate this game very high on the difficulty chart but like most RPGS, if you aren't careful you can die in an instant of good programming, and terrible luck for you. Its essential to have a high dose of Pick Me Ups and get equipment for each character that you plan on using. The puzzles for the most part aren't too difficult, unless you were me as a kid trying to figure out the password to the submarine/underwater level so you can go on to face the boss >.<[Hint: As a kid, I never did figure it out I am afraid.] That is why, I have to give it a moderate to high rating for my own preference because it is unique to Mario, and if you aren't careful, you will die.
In closing, this was a tremendous part of my childhood experience and in looking back today, I can say it was the reason why I started my jump into RPG's while also continuing to give my life for the crazy plumber and all his cohorts and villains. I recommend everyone to play it if they haven't yet, and I may just take another dip into the game-pool and go through it again just like the child in me has been for most of my years.

Mario RPG: Legendary Review   Fireproof
Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is what I have described to be the best game ever devised by any Nintendo affiliated company or Nintendo itself. Hands down, this is my number 1 choice of any video game of any console. You might think I'm crazy, but I promise you, I'm not. Mario is off to another adventure in this game to save Mushroom Kingdom from impending doom. Incorporating the old fashioned style gaming into new ideas brought forth a whole new world of Mario, the role playing side. Incredibly, Mario worked out astonishingly well in this genre and style.
Mario RPG brings out a whole new game with awesome enemies, new twisted story, great new friends, fresh new levels and another incredibly well orchestrated series of music. The world of Mario RPG will not bring you disappointment. It is purely fun, exciting and keeps you coming back no matter how well you have memorized this game!! I guarantee this.
Overall: 10
Masterpiece. The quality of this SNES game is a cut above the rest and you will quickly find yourself loving almost every aspect of this fine tailored video game. Many gamers asked Nintendo to create a Mario RPG 2 because the game was such a success. A game like this should represent  what gamers were looking  for. Some of the newer games "Mario Superstar Saga" began their debut as the expansion to this genre. That was Nintendo's answer to an expansion for what was a remarkable game. I was somewhat disappointed in Nintendo, but never disappointed in this game. I will die, one day, knowing this game was seriously the best in my list.
Graphics: 10
You will never be disappointed with these graphics. The sprites are crystal clear, spells have awesome animations and ideally, this game was the picture perfect health of the SNES console. This role playing game seriously rose the limits and capabilities of the SNES beyond every game sprung forth. I still love these graphics over Call of Duty and Halo, even today. Even in comparison to Mario Galaxy of the Wii, Mario RPG trumps that even in graphics. The 3-D isometric look was originally intended for the Nintendo 64, but it was accelerated for use and test with the SNES. This may be a key factor in the overall quality and presentation of the game, but it prevails regardless.
Sounds: 10
If you're not addicted to the game itself you're probably addicted to the music and sounds. Let's begin with the opening itself. The opening to this game is very unforgettable. The way the music was composed tells a story basically going through the game in order of what happens but not with exact details or indicating anything in particular. This isn't even the most popular song but it does grab your attention and get you amped up and ready to play!
One of the most popular songs is actually a remix for this game! The music itself is very attractive to the game itself and works very well, hand in hand with the level design. The overall sounds, these too work flawlessly. Boss songs are also pretty enjoyable. In my opinion, they really bring out the bosses in the game, You can't go wrong when listening to this game's music or sounds, they're really perfect for the game.
Addictiveness: 10
I have played this game 1000s of times. I have fully won this game 100s of times. Please define "addiction" for me because yes I am hooked. I love this game so much that I am even working on making a straight up more difficult version using the Lazy Shell program and maybe even upload the upgrade to Vizzed. You can easily get hooked into this game and play it many times later down the road. I just so happened to have the pleasure of playing this as a child when it first came out. This was what defined a large part of what I loved in a game at the time. Absolutely nothing wrong with getting hooked on to this game, it's like cocaine for the eyes and ears.
Story: 9
Brilliant story to say the least. You assume the role of Mario, who is obviously the main character of the game. You venture around Mario's world fighting monsters and uncovering the truth as to what happens early in the game. Of course, Princess Peach gets kidnapped and it's Mario's job to save the day. The story itself is rather simple and easy to follow. The events circling the story also piece together very nicely. You can't go wrong. Brilliant story that easily works with what was brought to the table in this game.
Depth: 6
There was not too much depth to this game. The game itself was obviously HUGE but it's very straight forward and with a single path. There are several mini games and side quests you can do to obtain all the items of the game. Mario RPG uses a similar combat system to Final Fantasy, however, it is completely turn based. The magic is very 2-D with very little complexity in the sense that the game was built without utilizing status effects as much as should. The overall lay out of the monsters is repetitive and disallows much depth, aside from the size of the game itself.
Difficulty: 5
Not a difficult game. It is easy to level up an extra level earning yourself enough stats to get through the area you're at with armor that minimizes the damage you take by a lot. The layout of your spells easily allows recovery. Healing items are genuinely inexpensive and sometimes there's absolutely no need for any items at all. In some parts of the game, the enemies who KO someone from your team are generally lucky. The AI can have moments of strength, but overall, their moments of weakness clearly out number any and all strengths. This would be my only gripe with this game is that it is too easy. In this sense, you can breeze through the game with no trouble at all.
Ending:
Overall, this is a truly fascinating and wonderful game. If you've never played Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, please do. You will enjoy this style of Mario game play. This is definitely a game to remember and participate in. Wonder if there will be a contest created for this game. Would really be cool if there was hint hint!
Key Things:
For me, there are several key things that keep me coming back to this game. The most addicting thing, to me, is simply the music. Every boss song is epic. The first battle with Bowser has an epic song, the bosses have an epic song, Culex has the epic Final Fantasy song and Smithy has an epic song. Sometimes, I simply play the game to listen to these because they're really unique in the world of Mario.
Another key component is the number of mini games. You can play with the game boy, Yoshi's race, Moleville Thumper game, Booster's Hill, Grate Guy's Casino and more. You can be easily entertained just by competing for your high score.
A key thing that I dislike about the game is just how short it really is after playing it for so long. I can easily breeze through the game with no trouble and collect 30+ hidden treasures with no effort. I always desired some definable challenge from the original game.

Finally a good guy... Sort of   katie.rae
Overall:
If you have ever played and enjoyed any of the older final fantasy game or any similar (Earthbound) and you love Mario then this is a perfect game for you! The best part about this game is that for once Boswer is not portrayed as the villain of the game! When you start the game you are to believe you are rescuing the princess.. Yet again.. From of course Bowser. But since at the very beginning of the game you are already at what would normally be the end of the game you soon realize that in this game, things are going to be a little different. Surprisingly not only does Princess join your group to take on a new evil but so does Bowser. Of course he has an ulterior  motive (being that he wants his castle back so he can plan his next kidnapping) Its a really fun game with a really different kind of Mario story. Its about time they changed it up a little
Graphics:
When I rate a game I like to rate them by the graphics of the time the game was made. This game is very old now and even for its time it could have spruced it up a little more. I was going for the 3D kind of look and being one of the first games to try and do that, I feel they did pretty good although I do feel they could have fixed it up just a little bit more before releasing the game.
Sound:
Same as usual. The same few songs playing in the background. Some happy, some intense. Always fitting the mood of what is happening at that particular time in the game though. That is always one thing I loved about older games. And also you cant have a Mario game with out a remix of some of the classic Mario songs from the beginning of the saga!
Addictiveness:
As usual Nintendo has created another addictive Mario game. I don't know how they do it but they do it very well. As usual with RPG games you lose a sense of time because battles can take up to a half an hour or more or sometimes less. When a battle is done of course you have to play a little further to see what you have just accomplished! So again, it is very easy to lose track of time. They did good on the story with this one. There really is no time you really want to stop and take a break. You always want to know what is going to happen next!
Story:
On this journey Mario and his pals are to collect all the Star Pieces,
so that they can repair star road but they soon learn that the last one
is in Bowsers castle who is now inhabited by the evil Smithy.
For finally changing up the story line and changing the villain completely, Nintendo did a really great job! I was entertained for hours and hours. As I said in "addictiveness" you never really want to take a break. Every character to meet that joins your group has their own unique reason for being there, but only together can they stop the evil that threatens them.
Depth:
There's not a whole lot of extra things to do in this game. No real side quests. Its pretty much "go here" "go there". There are some hidden items and such like any other RPG but I think this is one of the more simplest ones by far.
Difficulty:
When I was in about grade 4 was the first time I played this game. A friend of mine and I could not get past one of the bosses. It seemed like it took forever when we did it. When I played it again a few years ago, that boss was killed in about 4 shots.. So I don't think the game is very hard at all especially if your an avid gamer, and compared to the games that are out there now this is a cake walk.
I hope that many of you enjoyed playing this game as much as I did!

Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars   ProGamer135
Well, this is a review of Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars. I must say that this would have to be one of my favorite video games. I have purchased this video game with Wii Shop Channel points on the Wii Shop Channel. I used to play this video game every day. I've beat Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars two times in the past.
My overall rating is ten. I had chose ten because this game offers extensive content, the graphics are sharp, although, some of Mario's actions seem a tad weird and different, the soundtracks in the background include a catchy beat, I am extremely addicted to this game because I enjoy Mario role playing video games, the story is amazing because of the different types of characters and all of the action, the depth is out of this world because there is an extensive amount of content included in this game, and the difficulty isn't that high, as long as you know what your next attack will be.
Well, this is paragraph will include explanations about  Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars' features are included and how the designations had been created. Well, I've learned most of the hidden areas, glitches, secret objects and items, and where to travel. I would have to say that Culex would be the most difficult boss for other video game players under advanced skills. Culex isn't difficult for me. Battling Culex is extremely simple, well, at least included in my opinion. Culex originated from Final Fantasy video games. Anyways, I own the most powerful attack. I usually use Peach as my reviver/healer. She receives four to sixty damage every battle. You must equip her with advanced armor. The challenges in this video game are astounding. There are many ideas that haven't been included in other video game creators. Most of Mario's motions in this video game seem extremely weird and impossible. An example is when he had been standing on a chain with his hands high in the air.
The background soundtracks are astounding. They own catchy beats and compare perfectly with the scenery. My favorite soundtrack would have to be Culex's theme song. It has a fast-acting beat, the beat is catchy, and the soundtrack compares perfectly with the astonishing scenery. My second favorite background soundtrack would have to be the battle music. There are a plentiful of bosses included in Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars.
I am extremely addicted to this video game because I seriously enjoy Mario role playing video games, especially this Mario role playing video game. The enemies and the bosses have astounding, but insanely weird attacks. The appearances of the enemies and bosses included in this video game are whacky. They have my uncle and I giggle. Most of Mario's attacks are astounding and enjoyable to use as an attack.
The story is just out of this world. It first starts off with Peach sitting outdoors in her garden. The blue sky above her transforms to a dark black color and Bowser flies downward with an aircraft and grasps Princess Peach tightly. She constantly yells for help. Mario leaps out of his pad, ready to save the date. You'll have to solute the rest of the story by completing the game. By the way, Bowser is such an idiot. Good luck completing Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars.
The depth of this video game is seriously extensive. There is an extremely amount of content included in Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars. There are an extreme amount of the type of enemies, there are a plentiful of bosses, and there are many courses and areas included in this video game.
The difficulty is quite simple, as long as you constantly level higher. It is extremely easy to know which keys to press, as long as you know which key activates which motion. It is also a role playing video game. These video games are as simple as pieces of cakes. I wish you the best if you decide to give this retro video game a shot included in the Retro Game Room. Good luck!:D
I highly recommend this game to role playing gamers. It includes many battles, bosses, and role playing in Super Mario Role Playing Game Legend of the Seven Stars. Again, I wish you good luck!:D

Super Mario RPG Review   Chronobocca
Graphics 10
This game has graphics like no other SNES game you have ever laid eyes on. Mario looks like Mario. Goombas look like brown mushrooms still. Koopa Troopas are still overkill tortoises. Geno is the best, mostly because he looks like a puppet with a nightgown, because that's what he is. +Magic spells. Bowser is still a giant overkill tortoise with a shell that resembles spikes from Zelda on a portal on an overkill tortoise. And Mallow... is a marshmallow. Peach is still an extremely lame princess who likes to be captured and, as everyone knows, saved by Mario. And toadstool guys are still weird-looking 1-Ups and HP boosts. It's like your regular Mario plat former, but 3D.
Sound 10
Bowser's Castle sounds like Bowser's dull, easy-beaten(Until visit#2), old brick wall excuse for a sturdy castle (That doesn't mean the castle looks bad, it means Bowser is trying to pass off a weak castle, which is practically a brick wall, for a castle). And Mario's Cab sounds like Mario's personal, extremely catchy, familiar tune. Mario still sounds like he is making an obnoxious "Boing!" sound when he jumps. Too bad Princess Toadstool doesn't shriek. Like, actually make a shriek sound. That would be cool, but it could be annoying at times. Again, just like your average Mario plat former, just the game is 3D, with some extra sounds and tunes, for the RPG style play.

Addictiveness 10
This game is very fun. There are tons and tons of hidden Frog Coins for special purposes. There are many different re playable Mini-Games, such as the Mine Cart Mini-Game, or the Yoshi Racing Mini-Game. Or the Midus River Mini-Game. Also, you can equip items, such as the Hammer, and the Symbols, and Parasol... A certain character even has a weapon where he or she throws Mario at the enemy. There are tons of secrets, and like, the game is incredible, just incredible.
Story 10
There are a few story plots. After Mario unsuccessfully tries to rescue Princess Toadstool( This is surprising, because Mario is an awesome Italian plumber, and Bowser is a clumsy, heavy, hopeless tortoise who tries to make himself look intimidating.), a giant sword, with a NAME   comes crashing down on the Dream Road, and destroys the Grand Star, and splits it into 7 pieces. After that, the sword, Exor, crashes down on Bowser's Castle, and the 3 protagonists become separated, and the Smithy gang takes over Mario's world. You later find out, that without the Grand Star, no more wishes can be made. And the 7 star pieces landed in 7 separate places, one of these areas, Bowser's Castle. So, that is where, both you, and Mario, gain full understanding and Mario sets off on his REAL journey, to try to repair the Star Road.
Depth 10
This game is longer than you think if you thought this game is just another princess-saving errand game. Because IT'S NOT. This game is much longer than that. Once you save Toadstool, then she is separated from you once more. And, if you feel angry at Bowser and want to kill him, too bad, because he is separated from you, too. And then, you go on a journey in 7 areas, one area you go to twice, to repair the Star Road, so that dreams come true once more. There are also small side quests that can obtain you cool stuff, some of them are really hard to complete, some are really easy. There are also many, secrets, like the path that obtains you, like, 7 Frog Coins in the Forest Maze.
Difficulty 7
This game isn't TOO hard, but there are numerous bosses that take care of me pretty easy, just like their are difficult enemies. The cake thing in Marrymore used to, and still does give me trouble. Exor is in my Top 5 Hardest Bosses. Axem Rangers are the #1 hardest boss for me to defeat. Red and Black just kill me, but if Black is dead, then Green is giving me trouble. If Black and Green are dead, it's either Pink or Yellow giving me trouble. They are almost impossible for me to kill, no matter what.
Overall 10
This game is 100% unique from other Mario games. It is a huge, fun, complex game, with an RPG style combat system, and is one of the best SNES games ever. It is most definitely in my top 20 favorite SNES games. That is to conclude this review.

One of the Best RPG's ever   Chubby2211
Super Mario RPG. The ultimate mix up of Mario characters and Final Fantasy RPG game play and  turn based combat. But what makes this game one of the greatest games of the NES era. If you stick around I will be able to tell you. So without further delay lets get this review under way.
The year is 1996. At this point the NES has been discontinued by Nintendo of America. The Nintendo 64 wouldn't reach the American market for another six months. So what was a gamer to do. Well in the month of march Square and Nintendo decided to team up to bring avid gamers an amazing RPG experience which has not been seen since. But how did the graphics of this late NES library exclusive compare to the other games of this console.
Graphics: For a game on a 16 bit system, the graphics of this game are unbelievable. At this point a good bit of the NES library use 2-D pixelated  graphics. However this game looks stunning using 3-D character models and backgrounds which truly makes this game look like a early or prime Nintendo 64 title. The characters look beautiful. The characters look there best especially Mario and Bowser which really shine in the early parts of the game. The colors jump out at the gamer giving the bright and joyful feel of the previous Mario games but  with the added bonus of a 3-D environment. That reminds me. The backgrounds of this game stay true to the roots of the Mario games. It plays to the strengths of strong colors and amazing processing to completely bring the feel of the Mushroom Kingdom and surrounding areas to life. The graphics really add  to the experience of the game and really appeal to the gamer the second the games title screen flashes across the television screen. This is why the graphics of this game deserve the 10 out of 10 that they are given. The little flaws the graphics have really do not effect the game play. Even with the flaws, the graphics still outshine most of the other visuals of other prominent games on the system.  Even with these amazing graphics the game wouldn't be as good without the sounds that accompany it.
Sound: For a franchise with many installments of this game rank really high among them. All of the original music that is used in this game fit perfectly with the situation they appear with and the point in the story the player is currently at. For example the track that plays during the battle with bowser at the beginning of the game fits the boss fight mentality that is usually associated with the big green king. Even the songs that drop the ball a tiny bit still fit perfectly with the scenario that they are placed with which increases the draw in to the story that the player experiences. Even the sound effects that play when you jump or even just run around bring the classic Mario vibe. The coin collecting sound and jumping sound both sound like they where ripped straight from the original Super Mario Bros which really help bring a nostalgic aspect to  this new take on the Mario formula. Which is why the sound for this game get a 7 out of 10. Even with the spot placement of sound effects and music some of the songs to drop the ball just a bit. The great graphics and sounds help the game excel at this point but does the game keep the gamer interested?
Addictiveness: The story of this game really helps keep the game interesting. The different enemies that are meet along the way and the allies which are made really make the game feel alive. But we will cover more of that later. The real addicting aspect of this colorful RPG is the side quests. There are tons of side quests that take place during the course of our plumber's adventure which always seems to side track the best story followers. An example of this is the Culex sidequest. After the player uses a special stone on a specific door in the town of Monstro to reveal Culex which combines a bunch of different elements from the Final Fantasy series. This includes the original victory pose from Final Fantasy I and The Final Fantasy IV boss music which is a terrific nod to the series. Yet there are even more in depth side quest which begin to take more and more time to complete making the player want  to keep playing for extremely long time frames. Which is why the Addictiveness of this game gets a 9 out of 10. It really keeps the gamer involved even if they have completed the main quest line. Speaking of which.
Story. One sunny afternoon in the Mushroom kingdom the princess is once again captured by the evil Bowser. However instead of getting away with the evil deed, Bowser is actually kicked out of his own castle and must team up with Mario and friends to try and gather the 7 stars so he and Mario can try to take his castle back. Also so Mario can save princess Toadstool. This story really takes the original concept of the Mario games and kicks it up to eleven. It actually makes Bowser, the main villain, a chance to join Mario for the first time to actually try and help save the Kingdom for a change. Just for this reason alone the story gets a 9 out of 10. It really changes the generic formula that the franchise is known for and turns it completely on to its head.  This story will definitely help the player stay with the plot and keep them in the Mario universe a little bit longer. But even with the good story, what does this game actually offer.
Depth. The tons of side quests, the couple of easter eggs, the amazing story, etc, this game really provides a lot for the gamer to do. Like previously mentioned, the side quest are very time consuming, using mini games and side characters to keep the gamer involved. This along with the amazing and exciting storyline alone can take up a ton of gameplay hours. However, this game also involves a lot of different characters to the mix as well.  Examples include the Square owned Geno and Mallow which only appearance was this amazing RPG. There also a ton of different enemies in this game that also only appear in this game including Belome and Smithy which is the main villain. Even the normal enemies that appear in most titles provide a bit of a challenge from time to time that causes the player to have to form different game plans for even the most easiest looking enemy. That is why the depth of this game gets a 8 out of 10. It really gives a ton of content to be explored and succeeds at making the game want to stay in this amazing world. But with depth there is challenge. Right?
Difficulty. This game is actually one of the easier RPGs that I have ever played. Once you figure out the game plan for the enemies and learn the timings for strikes the games battles really fly by. Even with this in mind some of the bosses still take more than a good timed swing which does give the game some difficulty. That is the only reason the game gets the 5 out of 10 that it is given. The bosses are so spread that the difficulty they bring is only a slight rise compared to the normal enemies in which are fought only bringing the difficulty up slightly.
So there you have it. The amazing one time combination of Mario platforming and character with the Final Fantasy battle style and story. Compared to other games of the year Super Mario 64 (a Nintendo 64 title 9.5) and Pokémon Red or Blue (9.4) This game should be lower rated because of the 16 bit graphics. But because the graphics compete with the 32 bit graphics of the 64, the terrific story, sounds, depth, and storyline, this game really deserves the praise it was given today.  I would recommend this game to anybody that likes RPGs, Mario, or the combination of turn based combat with a little platforming from the Mario games.

Graphics: 9: At the time of this games creation other games at the time were either lack luster or on any of the SEGA systems. Nintendo really knocked it out of the park with this one. The only problem I had with the graphics is how I could get stuck behind certain objects and never really know the layout due to a lack of camera controls.
Sound: 9: Love the music and sound effects, though there are the occasional sound glitches.
Addictiveness: 10: This is really a game that I find myself coming back to time after time. I am a huge fan of the RPG genre as a whole and this particular RPG ranks among my top favorites. I never get tired of all the things to do in this game.
Story: 9: Its fairly difficult to write a story involving Mario that doesn't turn into some goofy face-rolling adventure. However that is a big part of this games charm. The comedy is well placed and well written. Other than the main characters the character designs are really two dimensional.
Depth: 7: As much as I enjoy this game I can't really give it more than a 7. The reason for why your fighting the Smithy Gang is negligible. The only reason there was a problem at all is because the accidentally crashed through the star road. I would have liked a better reason for why everything was going wrong.
Difficulty: 4: This game is easy, but not ridiculously easy. With enough grinding any enemy can be beat whether or not you have the right equipment. Even the final boss is a push over with the easily found "Ultimate" items.
Overall: 8: Even though it isn't a perfect game, this game should bring entertainment to any RPG fan.

Love this game! Revised   leoncheesecake
Sorry about earlier when I did a review about this game I didn't realize how in depth you have to go :P So here I will re-do it!   Also under Story and Depth there is a minor spoiler so be warned!
First off I want to start with a glitch I found: At the beginning of the game there's a chance that when toad asks you if you know how to use items it will take away the pointer to choose items just tell him you know (No harm no foul right?)
Graphics 9:
With the graphics of this game is very great for how old this is. The animations are great! Sadly I haven't played any other NES games on here to tell you the comparison. (I had to get caught up on homework a bit)
Sound 8: This game has great sound's/ music but it does have audio spikes every now and again. I know this could be an issue with my PC but it was something to be pointed out!
Addictiveness 10:
I love RPG type games and this one always has me coming back when ever I have free time.  Over all this is a great addicting game that you should try :)
Story 10:
I rated the story 10 because you get to see Bowser in a different way that you have never seen him before (I think?) Bowser is changed to this character that will help you get Peach (Toadstool) back so that he can steal her again? (Nintendo is very weird in this aspect) But even after you get peach back you are forced by Bowser to get his place back? That is as far as I will go into the story!
Depth 8:
This game has a lot of depth in it! You are able to see Bowser trying to gather his armies to save Peach (Toadstool) and also he cries... One of the best things I have seen in awhile :P also with the newer characters in this game there is a bit to learn about them, but mostly Geno (I think hes called?) He was sent from the Hevan's to help Mario get the star's back so people can have there wishes granted again!
Difficulty 7:
Over all this game can be very difficult if you don't use the right order of character's! Like Bowser is a high damage and tank type of character, Geno is over all a damage dealer, Peach (Toadstool) is a great healer, Mallo is a mage type, and Mario is the main hero! Also as a tip I would highly recommend getting Frog Coins as quickly as possible! Buy the Double EXP accessory in the town of mole's (Sorry I haven't played this game in awhile I don't know what the town is called if you do please comment below!)
Overall 10:
Overall this is a great game very fun and addictive! The story is amazing you get to see character's like you never have before! If you have not played it I would highly recommend that you try this game.

Super Mario RPG Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 10
This game is the most awesomeness game in the world.  I love this game.  It is like Final Fantasy only in Mario series.
Graphics - 9
The graphics are great.  Very 3D and really good quality.
Sound - 10
The sound is perfect.  Sound effects are great.
Addictiveness - 9
I would play this game again.  It is so much fun!! :D
Story - 8
The story is very interesting.  Obviously, it is different.  You can use Peach and Bowser in the game.  That's what makes it so fun. :)
Depth - 8
The game is quite big.  Big like Final Fantasy except there is 7 worlds to go to and to get to the castle to beat the boss.
Difficulty - 3
The game is not that hard.  It is very easy if you play these types of games. :)
Wrap Things Up...
Super Mario RPG is a great RPG game.  It is probably my top 5 RPG games of all times.  I highly recommend trying this game.  If you like Mario series and Final Fantasy, I guarantee you are in for a treat. :D

Need Feedback On This   ngl2013
Overall this game deserves a 10 because the story, depth and difficulty all blend together nicely to make a balanced game of challenge, mystery and fighting. The graphics could have been less pixelated and blurry, but since it came out a long time ago it's not too bad for it's time. The sound quality is really good but does loop a lot. This game is very addictive because you can make so many different character choices, item choices and things like that. The story and depth at which it goes is amazing for such an early type game. It has twists and turns and in the end doesn't really make sense, which only makes you want to play it more so you can understand it better. The difficulty I chose a seven for two reasons. One, fighting Culex. Holy crap that guy is tough! Two, there is a lot to remember. Even writing it down only marginally helps.
Now, I am currently trying to remake this game. I'm going to add/remove certain dialogue, add a map to access at anytime and reveal locations of hard to find items and hidden treasures(maybe). If anyone would like to give me any ideas on how to make the game better, let your opinion be heard or just shout at me, leave me a message or email me. I have never remade a RPG of this magnitude before but I will give it my best shot. Once I have all the ideas I need, it should take me about a day or two.
So, in recap, awesome game. Truly superb for all you Mario fans out there.

How fun it is   unfurledearth
I thought this game was awesome. It is so fun and has a lot of things that other games don't. Like the lucky things you get after beating an enemy. The story and character's were really unique though, but that's what made it fun. The only thing that I don't like is the beginning where you have to face a bunch of koopas (that don't give exp) before you can face bowser. Also when you get to have more then three people, you can only have three out to fight, instead of the whole party. But other than that, the game is awesome. Not just is it a unique Mario game, but it is also a unique rpg. The reason why is because you can only have three guys out at a time, and you can make your attacks stronger by pressing a button when you attack. Honestly, I think its pretty funny to. Especially with all the costumes that Mario can change into out of nowhere. If you like this review and rpgs, then super Mario rpg is the game for you. Thank you for reading this review.

Mario Unlike Any Other Mario Games   Serf
Just when you thought you knew about Mario, an RPG shows up and confuses your understanding of all "RPG" Mario games. Mario RPG is a team based attack type of game. Unlike his usual games, you would have to refer to the game stats to equip items and weapons and battle different monsters to increase your levels. You learn special/magic moves and play different mini games in hopes to complete the game.
I went back and forth with this game as to how to rate this game. I have not heard of this game until after this website came about. When Vizzed.com showed "Mario RPG," I was confused. Bear in mind that my experience in RPG games surpasses that of any Nintendo games created today. (Of course with XBOX, Wii, and PS games, Super Nintendo games should simple to flip.) Regardless, I did not find the game difficult, but time-consuming. Of course, I loved the game. I am a huge fan of the Mario Franchise, so when RPG and Mario was put together into one, I was beyond ecstatic. Nonetheless, I did not find this game to be as difficult.
The depth of this game is great for it's type. The characters that they introduce are amazing. The details as to how to improve your characters skills does make you think. Henceforth, I had to score this game high.
I love the story line. I most especially love how the personality of the Mario franchise is shown. Although serious, and you have to destroy the antagonist, they tend to keep the comedic elements of Mario. Amusingly, Mario's explanation (using Charades and transforming skills that no one knew he had) is absolutely hilarious. I most especially love the cameo that Yoshi makes. I was hoping that Yoshi was cast-able, but the story was beautiful. The Mario franchise does need to re-introduce Mallow in future games.
This game is very addicting. As an RPG gamer, I could not stop until I won. This website, however, needs to be aware of the sudden freezes that this game does. There would be a few times, especially after receiving a star that this game would freeze, but nonetheless, this game is amazing.
The sound in this game is phenomenal. Mario games have always been spot on with their mix of sound and music. They tend to always make them complement each other.
The graphics are very different than what you would normally see. Mario is more 3D than usual.
Overall, this game is amazing! I have loved every second playing the game. The puzzles are amazing and the ability to use Princess Peach and Bowser on the same team is phenomenal. I love this game! By far, my favorite Mario Nintendo game!

Infinite Money:
• When you are on the path going towards Rosa town, get to the section where all of the ShyGuys are standing on top of the treasure boxes. Go to the bottom right side of the screen to the exit. Hit the box next to the door and get a few coins (but do not empty it, leave some in) then go through the exit. As soon as you go through the exit, go back through and hit the box more times (still don't empty it). Then just repeat this until you have a many coins as you want, it won't go empty!

Improving the Jump:
• The Jump special's power improves the more it is used. This improvement is not based on leveling up or equipping items. So trample them monsters and smash them all!

tRIUNE 12-22-13 - 05:25 AM
You have to go into the menu with Esc key and then click on the Config tab. From there click on the Input. Next click on '#2' and ensure that it's selected as 'None'. Do that for the remaining controller ports (#3-#5).

What is a Super NES Multiplayer Adapter?! It keeps telling me to "Remove the Super NES Multiplayer Adapter! (I am not referring to Super NES, I know what that means.)
lukey6905 11-21-13 - 04:54 AM
MODS please check out my original post on how to fix the freezing problem and put it somewhere where people can find it.
lukey6905 11-21-13 - 04:54 AM
This worked for me when fixing the freeze bug on Super Mario RPG: 1. Make a save state (F2) 2. Hit Escape 3. Click "Load" 4. In the Bottom right corner, check the square that reads "PAL" 5. Click the "Load" button 6. Re-load Your save state (F4)"
