Better than the rest   RetroGameNinja
This game is a wonder for those of you who are nostalgic or just love platform genre games (me). There are no cons except for the missing content in the lost levels and the camera scheme. There is a lot of content and the second game was added. For a Game boy color game, I doubt this could be any better.
Look. I know the Game boy color is 8-bit, but it doesn't mean the graphics could be better. The title screen and the map screen look great, but I think the game play could look just a bit better. I know we want it to look like the original Super Mario, but that's what the whole point is (I'm only talking about the camera scheme, mind you. The GBC could have easily put SMB on the whole screen).
Just because the sound isn't exactly like the original Mario doesn't mean it's better than it. I do like the title screen music and the map sound effect (the beep... beep...... beep... beep one). Everything else isn't really better, but it still is great. The newly added mode select music sounds really cool. I also like the toy box music. It reminds me of Galaga '88 "Ragtime" (level 14 of  Galaga '88).
This game never gets old, no matter how old it really is. Besides the original Mario, you have content that can be unlocked. There are You Vs. Boo races that you unlock for 100,000 points. I've never really done one before, but I think they're really fun. Then there's the unreleased-in-America Super Mario Bros. 2 AKA Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels for 300,000 points. This is just like the original Mario except with a new so-called "power up"... THE POISON MUSHROOM (and different levels and more levels although they were chopped off in this version)!!!!!! This mushroom acts just like an enemy, either shrinking you or killing you... I see why it's too hard for Americans. This game is missing some content like worlds A,B,C,D and the wind. It's always a challenge getting 100,000 or 300,000 points in the original Mario.
The story is the same in both games, Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. : The Lost Levels and it's pretty straight out. A princess named Princess Toadstool was captured by the evil koopa named Bowser and Mario must save her by jumping, running, and warping through 8 menacing worlds while fighting off koopas, goombas, buzzy beetles, spinnies, lakitus, and many more enemies and grabbing coins, mushrooms, flowers, and stars. To make it a little annoying, you also hear "Sorry Mario, but your princess is in another castle" 7 times. Although you still don't want to eat Poison Mushrooms (just saying so you don't forget). Have a turtle stomping pipe warping brick smashing good time making it to world eight level four and good luck saving the princess (You're going to need it). Since the
This game has a lot to offer. Besides the original Mario and the content that can be unlocked, there is a lot to this game. There is a challenge mode that two or more people can play, there are records (high scores) that you can look at and see who is number 1. There is also an album that shows pictures of achievements that you unlock throughout the game like finding a hidden mushroom block or seeing the fireworks at the end of a level or even something as simple as killing a goomba or koopa. There is a toy box that has a calendar that shows years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.............................................3000 (yes, it shows 2012) and a fortune teller. If you get extremely lucky, you get 5 extra lives, so you'll have 10 lives when starting instead of 5. With the challenge and Vs. mode, you need to use the link cable. The NES version wasn't nearly good as this
The original Super Mario Bros. I would give a 6.5 for difficulty, and Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels would get an 8 for difficulty, but considering the fact that you have to unlock Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (and the You vs. Boo races) and there is new added content like vs. mode, challenge mode and a photo album that you have to unlock the pictures for, I would give this a ten in difficulty. I would give Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario Brothers: The Lost levels an 8.5 out of 10 already, but with all the newly added content, this has to have a 10 out of 10.
To wrap it up, I'm going to list the pros and cons.
Pros:
-original Mario with new content
-The lost levels
-great sound and graphics
-map screen
-two player challenge mode
-fun activities outside game
-fortune telling lets you seek advice
-calender shows every year, month and day from year 1 to 3,000
Cons:
-bad camera movement
-missing content in The Lost Levels

SMB+Portable=Instant Awesome   NovemberJoy
SMB is awesome, and there is no doubt about that. But how about having SMB on the go? That equals 2X the awesomeness. But, there have been bad console-to-handheld ports, so I'll see how this stacks up.
The graphics aren't improved from SMB. The graphics added in are good. None of the graphics are bad on the eyes, and almost all, if not all of the graphics are good.
+SMB graphics aren't a really bad thing
+Added graphics are well-made
+None of the graphics are ugly
-The GBC is capable of much prettier games
The sound isn't remade or remixed from SMB. Some songs are added in, and they sound decent. Just like the graphics, none of the added tracks are bad, and almost all of them, if not all are really good. Nintendo could've tried to remake the graphics/sound, but it probably wouldn't have turned out as well as it did.
+SMB music tracks are really good
+Added tracks are good
+Nothing sounds bad
The story is the same as SMB. Nothing new, nothing old. The Mushroom Kingdom was invaded by the Koopa tribe,(which is the only time they're referred to as a tribe) and their dark magic turned the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom into stones, bricks, and plants, and kidnapped the Princess, who is the only one that can undo the curse,(which is the only time they tried dark magic that I can think of that wasn't just to harm/kill) and the overall-clad plumber comes to the Mushroom Kingdom for no apparent reason other than he feels like it, and he finds out the Princess is in trouble. He decides to try to rescue the Princess for no apparent reason other than to be heroic, and that's it.
+Story began the Mario series/saga, and was not a really bad start.
The gameplay is classic SMB. Nearly flawless. However, the game received a new problem with the transfer to GBC: Screen size. There's no way they could've fit the entire level, top to down, on the screen at the same time, so you have to press Up or Down to scroll the screen in that direction. It's not a game-breaking problem, but it does get in the way.
Oh, but there's so much more than just SMB. There's a lot more in this package.
The game has normal SMB, 3 save files, and much, much, more. There's a new map screen, which is a decent graphical improvement, the ability to switch between Mario and Luigi on the map screen with the Select button, both quests, a clear list, most of the wacky but wonderful glitches of the original, a fortune-telling minigame, the ability to race a Boo in 8 different levels once you get a score of 100,000 or more on the high-score board, a photo album which expands as you do certain tasks, a Challenge mode that challenges you to collect 3 medals for every level in the game, a Vs. mode that lets you play with another person as long as you have a Link Cable, two GBCs,(or GBA, if you have that link cable, and your friend has one as well) and two copies of the game, the ability to transfer high score boards with the Link Cable, and then there is the feature that is the best added feature out of them all....*drumroll*
THE LOST LEVELS!
This game has the real SMB.2, in all its glory. Worlds A-D are cropped off, as well as the wind element from the game, but that doesn't mean that it's any less awesome. So, in total, this game has 96 levels to go through, counting SMB 1's second quest. Pretty good, considering that this is a GBC game.
+Enormous amounts of content, for a GBC game
+The Lost Levels
-The Lost Levels are missing some content
-Minor camera issues
So, let's recap.
PROS:
+SMB graphics aren't really a bad thing
+Added graphics are well-made
+Nothing is really shabby in the graphics department.
+SMB music tracks are really good
+Added music tracks are really good
+Nothing sounds bad at all
+Story began the Mario series/saga, and wasn't really a bad start.
+Enormous amounts of content, for a GBC game
+The Lost Levels
CONS:
-The GBC is capable of much prettier games.
-The Lost Levels are missing Worlds A-D, and missing the wind from some levels.
-Minor camera issues.
Is it worth playing?
Yeah. If you can get this game irl, than it will be a really awesome purchase. If you're not sure, then, by all means, play it on Vizzed! You're sure to like it, and if you don't, then that's fine by me. If you have a GBC and an NES, and you have a choice between this and the original SMB, pick this.

Super Mario Bros Deluxe review for the Game Boy color!   G@mehe@d
Before the time of downloadable content. People had to keep their NES to play the original Mario Bros. It was 1999, a time when 3D games were at full throttle, a time where computers were starting to be used, also a time were everybody freaked out about the Millennium. All of this does not mean that people still don't want to play Super Mario Bros. Then a game for people who wanted to play old school Mario came out called Super Mario Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. Not only did it give people the original Mario Bros, but also plenty of extras too. There's awards 3 game modes and even printable content that you can print out from the Game Boy printer! That's not all I'll make a list in the depth section.
STORY: It starts out in the Mushroom Kingdom where the Koopas. Evil turtles that are infamous for their evil magic. Took away the Princess and turned everybody into stone. Similar to the Alex Kid in Miracle World story but that has nothing to do with the story of this game. Anyway Mario a fat plumber ( which is my way of describing him) took notice and went on a mission. To save the princess and save the Mushroom people. For 7 of the castles he beats he will find a little freaky mushroom saying that the princess is in an other castle. Castle 8 contains the princess. Can Mario save the princess and save the Mushroom Kingdom? It's up to you!
GRAPHICS: The graphics look just like the original game. However the screen zoom in so much, that there is a lot of blind jumps. That's only a minor problem. You will still enjoy classic Mario on the Game Boy Color.
SOUND: The sound is exactly like the original too. Nothing wrong with this, it's perfect.
ADDICTIVENESS: Like the original. It's very hard to get off, no matter how many times you die and no matter how frustrated you get. You will be attached to this game. The added modes helps too. You'll be on for hours!
DEPTH: Like I said before this game has a lot to offer. Here are the following features of the game.
Original Super Mario Bros.
Map in the original mode.
The ability to save progress.
The ability to save your scores.
Vs mode were you challenge a friend with the Game Boy link cable.
Challenge Mode were you try to get 5 red coins you must beat levels in original mode to play them in the challenge mode.
Several awards for to receive while your out on your adventure. These awards are printable. I think it will only work on an actual Game Boy printer.
An unlockable mode for when you beat the game. I'm not going to tell you because it is a surprise.
A toy box with a calendar that goes all the way until the year 3000. You can mark dates for important events. Also there is a fortune teller thing that's supposed to tell your fortune by what card you pick.
DIFFICULTY: The game is a little easier than the original because you can save after every level. It's still difficult though.
OVERALL RATING 9! :)

Review on Super Mario Deluxe   IgorBird122
Greeting on yet another review by IB122, this game is now on the game Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color, it's the game Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System for the Game Boy Color, it give that classic feel of the NES game all in a palm of your hands, ok, let's get started with this review.
The Graphics:
For the graphics, they're similar to the NES version of Super Mario Bros., but for the Game Boy Color, I think this is still a pretty alright though based on how the Game Boy Color is, I say it's pretty alright, it's not really the best game on the Game Boy Color, graphics wise, but still, I think they came out pretty alright though, but I still think they would do a little bit better with this game though, but it's not really that bad though, but I understand that this game came out around Mid-1999 and the Game Boy Color debuted in late-1998, so that could be the reason more like, but still, even with that amount of time, the graphics could be better, but they did mostly the best they could in this game for the time of the handheld though, But, I do got to say, they have manage to fix a couple things that wasn't in the NES version though, like animation of the water and lava, and also Peach and Toad can move their lips (but can't talk though, but that's still not much of a problem), and the other good thing is that even with a smaller screen, you can zoom in or out of the camera by hitting up or down on the D-pad.
So with that all said, I'm going to give the graphics a 7 out of 10, could be better, but still pretty alright for the Game Boy Color

----
The Sound/Music:
For the Sound effects and even the Music on this game brings back that classic sounds from the NES version of the game which is a nice tune, for the sound effects, they have also added in a lot more sound effects to this game we haven't heard from the NES version of the game, like the trampoline making that bounce sound when you jump from it and also Mario's slide have that sliding noise that we haven't heard from the NES version so I think in the way that the Sound effects got lightly better than the NES version. Ok, for the music, like I said before, the music in this game is similar to the NES version which brings back that classic  tune, and I think for the Game Boy Color, that's really giving the game a really nice tone, with that classic music while playing in each of those levels.
With all that said, I think the Sound and Music in this game really got the most out of it, so I'm going to give this a rate of 9 out of 10, with that, it's still pretty good, not a 10, but good enough to be a 9.

----
The Addiction Level:
I think for the addiction level, to my point of view, despite what I mentioned in the graphics, if someone happens to have a Game Boy Color, they can at lease play Super Mario Bros., and what's also going to bring in more of the addiction for this game is all the game modes those players can choose from (when I mention about the game modes), and not just the game modes, but it's also the add-ons and the modifications they made from the NES version of the game and a lot of people does like a lot of modifications done to the game (but not too much) and with those game modes with all those add-ons I think personally give this game a really high addiction level.
So with what I mentioned about the Addiction Level, I'm going to give this a 9 out of 10, pretty addicting, but not extremely addicting though.

----
The Story:
The story in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is very similar to the original Super Mario Bros. game from the NES system. To refresh your memories on what the story was, Princess Toadstool (who was later renamed to Peach) was kidnapped by Bowser and taken back to his castle and only Mario (and Luigi) is out to go save her from Bowser and you got to travel though 8 different worlds in order to get to him, going through numerous enemies like Goombas, Koopas, and a lot more later on and obstacles in each of the levels the level in order to get to Bowser's castle.
For the story, I think personally it's mostly the same as the NES version, so I'm going to give this a 8 out of 10

----
The Depth:
There is a whole lot of Depth in this one game, all the different modes you can choose from like from the classic mode where you can play the game like you played in the NES version of the game and you also have more modes like the Challenge mode like you can play all the levels you unlocked and gives a little more of a challenge for the player to go with, and you got the vs. mode where you hook up with a friend to play this and a lot of other modes to mentioned as well like the "For Super Players" where you can be able to play the classic Lost Levels that places outside of Japan that haven't experience before in this game (unless you played All-Stars on the SNES).It's not just the Game modes in this game that's really given this game a lot of depth, it's also some of the newer features also added in that we haven't seen in the NES version as well, and to my mind, I think the Depth of the game really made Super Mario Bros. Deluxe better than the others in this review.
With all that said above with all the different game modes you can play in and all the other features in this game as well, I'm going to give this a perfect 10 out of 10.

----
The Difficulty/Gameplay:
This at some points in the game can be quite easy and quite difficult, mostly depending on what you're doing. when you start playing this game, even if you have played the NES version of Super Mario Bros. this game can still be a little hard to play at first because like I mentioned in the graphics, that the screen starts out small and you don't have a whole lot to see what's in front of you or behind you, but luckily you can zoom in or out which is a really good idea or otherwise this game will be much harder to play, but even with that, playing it on the Game Boy Color can be a little bit harder because you need to get the hang of it, once you get the hang of it, it can be pretty easy, as for the controls, it's not really that different from the NES version since the GBC and the NES both share the same controls, so it's not trying to figure out on what's the controls, if you remember what the controls are in the NES version, then you should know on the GBC version.
With all that said, I'm going to give this an 8 out of 10, pretty hard, but not really impossible to play though.

----
Overall:
Overall with this game is a pretty great game for the Game Boy Color, the only disadvantage with this game is it's graphics, but everything else in this game did make up from that flaw though, like the sound and music all came out, with also how addicting this game is and with the amount of depth as well, and with the story from the Original NES version on the Game Boy Color is also as nice as well. So, my final thoughts on this game, it's a pretty great Mario game for the Game Boy Color that has the original NES game with a lot of additional modes and features and got a whole lot to offer, and If your an owner of a Game Boy Color, I would recommend this game for you to try out for yourself to play, mostly if you like a Mario game, but you only have a Game Boy Color with you, get this game.
For my final rating, I'll give this an 8.5 out of 10.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe   MegamanZero
This game is very fun to play but nothing special. its the same game as the original super Mario bros. but in this game there's a few extra things to do and you can same the game after each level which is pretty convenient. You can also have this game on the go so that really good. Its not that difficult. Not that much depth. The story is the same. I might play this game if I'm on a really long road trip. This game still has the classic super Mario bros theme. Also the graphics are again nothing special same old same old. but one thing i like is that if you get over a lot of points in the game then you can play the original super Mario bros. 2 that was only avalible in japan. But that version is A LOT harder than the version we got in America. I give Super Mario Bros. Deluxe a 8.5/10 its a pretty good and fun game.

Super Mario Bros on the GBC?   123Cheese
Well, when I first saw this I was all like,
"OH BOY!"
Good thing I'm good at picking video games.
Because this ones a keeper. I would buy it if I ever saw it in stores (Game Over HINT).
Although some of the sound effects have been changed, it's a great game.
After all, SMB has had many ports, to the game boy systems, to Virtual Console, so putting something 8-bit on something, well, 8-bit turned out great. There are also a few extras in the game, such as the boo race mode, and other goodies. So play this right now, you won't regret it.

Smb DX Review   mgharper94

I personally loved this game since it was my first game for game boy color. The graphics in this game are awesome even though the screen is a little close up then the NES is but good for game boy quality. The sound I must say is incredible everything is practiclly ported over to the handheld for the go! I'd say it's pretty addicting since it's pretty much the same as the NES version. The story on the other hand is the same as the original. It does however has stuff to offer like unlockable content. The difficulty I would say is an 8 due to the second quest. Overall this game is outstanding for SMB fans of all ages and I give it a serious 10.[/url]

Super Mario Bros: The Deluxe Remake   luigi25
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a game that was released in 1999 for the Gameboy Color. It is mainly just a remake of the first Super Mario Bros. that came out in 1985 for the NES. Deluxe does have some other modes thrown in with it as well. Although, I find myself enjoying this game less and less the more I play it. Especially when it comes to these extra modes. Not a whole lot else has changed with this port in terms of graphics or music either. This is mostly a remake of the 1985 game, but it is referred to as a Deluxe game because of the other different games included in this package. However, I just don't find any of this extra stuff to be all that worthwhile and here's why.
Graphics 5/10: Unfortunately, the graphics are not any better than what they were in the original game. There are a few cut scenes here and there, but Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a very dull looking game. The sprites and backgrounds have very little life to them, and this version looks just as bad as the NES version. I rate the graphics in the GBC remake the same as I did in the NES version of SMB.
Music 7/10: Nothing is different about the soundtrack in Mario Deluxe either. It basically contains the same tracks as the original with one or two new songs thrown in. These songs are pretty nice, but there isn't any variety in this game. Both versions have these problems, and the GBC port is no better or no worse.
Gameplay 3/10: In terms of gameplay and level design everything is the same in SMB Deluxe. The only power-ups are the Mushroom and Fire Flower. There is some exploration to it, but I don't like how everything seems so repetitive. Players have unlimited continues in this version, but it doesn't seem to help any because of the terrible screen crunch and awful controls. Mario feels like he's ice skating the whole time, he's so slippery!! I can't get over just how much I hate playing this port of Super Mario Bros. 1! The continues don't mean anything. I think this version is even harder than the NES game, and that one was pretty hard.
The stages take longer than they need to because they're harder to finish. You can't scroll enemies, like Bullet Bills, off the screen like you could in the NES and SNES version. You'll hear them, and the next thing you know you're taking damage or dying again!! This is not a fun version to play at all! It's way harder and longer than necessary, and I haven't even gotten to the other modes. This is just with the original 1985 game. The other ones are even worse, but they are optional. However, this game isn't SMB Deluxe without these extras.
I don't even feel like talking about these other games. Just like in the original, Hard Mode is unlocked after beating the normal game. You get the same 8 worlds but with different enemies such as: Buzzy Beetles, Bullet Bills, and more stage hazards than before. I hate how these levels just seem to repeat themselves so much. It almost doesn't feel like playing, but if you want 100%, you have to play these levels all over again, but this time, with slippery controls and poor visibility. To make things worse, you have to deal with more enemies and traps than in Normal Mode!
Challenge Mode is unlocked after beating a level in the normal mode of the 1985 classic. You have to collect: 5 red coins, beat the stage with a certain score in order to get the Blue coin, and find the Yoshi egg in each level to get a Green coin in order to get 100% this game. If you die on a level, you just have to go back and start again. I feel like the Red coins and Green coins are possible to collect, but the Blue ones are not even worth it! Challenge Mode just feels like a waste of time unless you are person who doesn't have anything else to do.
Deluxe also includes a dumbed down version of the Lost Levels from Super Mario All-Stars. This game is a little more fun than Challenge Mode, but it suffers from the same problems as the original game. That is the poor controls and awful screen crunch. Once you get up to world 8, you might as well shut it off! Starting out, this version of Lost Levels isn't bad, but after world 6 it just goes downhill! This game only has 8 worlds and no world 9 or worlds A - D. I've only beaten this version two or three times, and it took me almost 2 hours to do it in! This game just trolls you!
The You vs Boo game just plain sucks and isn't even worth it with at all with all the sliding around you do here. Players can choose to play as Luigi in this version, but he's just a palette swap of Mario. I don't think this port of SMB1 or Lost Levels is very fun to play. Enemies kill you very easily because of the way they can't be de-spawned by scrolling them off the screen. This game is almost as bad as Sonic Genesis in terms of screen crunch also!! I don't feel like this game is playable without using save states unless you want to spend hours and hours on it. It doesn't even have that much content, it just takes so long to complete because of how unnecessarily hard it is!! The gameplay it terrible in Super Mario Bros. DX.
Story 7/10: The story for the GBC version of SMB is the same as in the NES version. King Bowser Koopa has taken over the Mushroom Kingdom and turned the people into blocks. He has also kidnapped the ruler, Princess Toadstool, and took her to his castle in world 8. The other 7 castles are guarded by Bowser's henchmen who are disguised as Bowser himself. This is a pretty standard storyline for a video game, and it is nothing different from before.
Content 10/10: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe does have quite a lot of content that will keep you busy for a while (especially with how hard some of these stages can be). Players can play: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros (Hard Mode), Challenge Mode, The Lost Levels, and You vs. Boo. Be prepared to really rage on The Lost Levels section, and the You vs. Boo game can be pretty frustrating at times too.
Difficulty 10/10: Super Mario Bros. DX is a game that is hard for all the wrong reasons. The screen crunch makes it impossible to scroll enemies off the camera in this game but not in other Mario remakes which makes no sense at all. Mario keeps sliding off ledges due to his slippery controls. Even the original game takes some getting used to. I still have problems with this mode to this day. You almost need to use save states with this version it's so hard. The unlimited continues do nothing to make things easier, and I don't find this to be a very enjoyable experience for anyone who plays this attempt at a remake!
Overall 6.4/10: For me, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is no better than the original game. I think the NES version was easier because you could at least see where you were going! The graphics and soundtrack are no better in this port, and everything else has been downgraded. I didn't think the first game was all that great either, and I consider the GBC remake to be about the same as the old NES version. I liked the SNES All-Stars version the best when it comes to SMB or the Lost Levels. This isn't a worse version compared to the original, but it really isn't an improvement either.

Review of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe   Sludgehead
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. that was released for the Gameboy Color in 1999. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a near mimic of the original game, but adds in smoother movement and the ability to trail backwards a bit, where as the original Super Mario Bros. cut off the screen behind you as you progressed. There are many new features added into this version of Super Mario Bros., as well.
Upon start up, you will be given three options for the game. The first option is for the original 1985 Super Mario Bros.. The next option is challenge mode, where the player is given a score and coin challenge for each of the original levels if they are beaten. The third option is a VS. mode, which allows two players to simultaneously play the game. Another option can be unlocked, which allows the players to play The Lost Levels, also known as the real version of Super Mario Bros. 2.
This review will cover all three of the options, cover how each works, and juxtapose the Deluxe and Original versions of the Super Mario Bros. game.
Original 1985 Mode:
The Original 1985 mode is the same game Super Mario fans have been playing since 1985, with some new features added to it. In the Mushroom Kingdom, an evil King Bowser kidnaps the princess, and it is Mario's job to go off and save her. Through out the game, Mario will encounter many baddies such as evil shiitake mushrooms, known as Goombas, and turtle henchmen for Bowser, known as Koopa Troopas. The game is a side-scrolling 2 Dimensional platformer, and requires little more than jumping and running, which is much more fun than it sounds.
Each level in Super Mario Bros. is played going left to right, with various enemies and obstacles in the players way. The player is able to gain various power ups aid him on his way, each found within floating yellow boxes. These power ups start off with mushrooms that allow the title character, Mario, to grow in size and take up to two hit-points to defeat as opposed to one. After the Mushroom power up is acquired, the next available power up is the Fire Flower, which grants the title character the ability to throw fire balls at enemies, and still retains only two hit-points. The third and final power up is the Star, which gives the player temporary invulnerability to enemies. However, if the player falls or runs out of time while actively using the Star, the player will still die and need to restart.
In Super Mario Bros., there is a set of four levels, each referred to as "worlds". The first are typically above ground worlds, playing the famous Super Mario theme song. The level following is usually an underground level accessed by pipe in the beginning of the level. The third level will be an outside world like the first, but a tad more difficult than the previous two. The fourth level will take place within a castle, and will lead up to a boss fight at the end of the level. The goal while fighting the boss is to jump behind him, and get a hold of an ax which then, somehow, drops the boss into a pit of lava.
In the levels of Super Mario Bros. are several secrets located in various locations. Commonly these places are accessed by pipes the player can enter, and lead to a coin filled room underground. Other secrets are typically accessed by boxes that release vines once hit that lead to the sky, of which the player can climb. These, two, lead to more coins for the player to collect. If the player collects all 100 coins, he is granted an extra life, or a "1 up", as called in the game.
Another challenge for the player in the game is to gain a relatively high score. The score goes up in various processes that the player must do through out each level. Defeating enemies will grant the player roughly one hundred points, and these points will go up if defeating enemies consecutively. Coins also grant the player a certain amount points, and can be collected through out the levels in boxes or just laying about. Power ups grant the player one thousand points when collected, as well. Above all else, coming to the end of a level will grant you points based on how high you can land on the end flagpole, (At the end of each level is a literal flagpole the player latches onto and draws the flag down) the highest score available from doing so being five thousand points. The time is also tallied up, and gives the players points for how quickly the level is cleared.
Of the levels in the game, the gameplay usually relies on fast paced running, and jumping over obstacles and onto enemies. Throughout each level are pitfalls that will immediately kill the player if wondered into. Many levels rely on platforming difficulties such as moving platforms, edges that give the player very little space to move or jump to, and often having the player rely on jumping off of an enemy to make it over a pit. Some levels will require the player to swim through them, dealing with fish themed enemies that will chase the player if wondered near to. Aside from enemies and falls, other obstacles include moving links of fire, and fire projectiles that are fired off screen.
For those who have already played the original Super Mario Bros. and understands how the game plays out, this will be where the Deluxe and Original versions are contrasted.
As opposed to the original 1985 release of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. Deluxe gives the player the ability to back track a screen the player already has passed. In the 1985 release, the player is unable to travel back a screen at all, often missing some boxes or a power up that happens to wonder off screen, and forcing the player to continue forward. The player is granted the ability to go back a certain distance, but is still unable to go back all the way through the entire level. This allows the player to pick up on anything he may have missed previously, such as boxes or catching up to a runaway Mushroom power up.
As far as graphics and visuals go, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe retains the normal look of the original 1985 release, but improves a little more on the pixels and gives the game a cleaner image. The screen is zoomed in much more, and focuses more on the player. The player is given the ability to pan the screen upwards if needed. The animation is much smoother in the Deluxe version, and the game plays out far more fluently and quickly. Otherwise, the game looks identical to the 1985 release in every other way.
Another difference in the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe that is noticeable immediately is the use of over worlds in the level selection, and the fact the there is an ability to select levels. These over worlds are similar to that one would find in Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3. These feature is a very welcoming add-on to the game, as it grants the player the ability to replay levels at whim. These over worlds also look very nice, and give a more modern feel to the game.
Aside from these differences, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is pretty much identical to the original Super Mario Bros. released back in 1985. The games use the same gameplay techniques, and identical graphics. The Deluxe version, over all, runs faster and more fluently.
Challenge Mode:
Challenge Mode is a feature that is nonexistent in the original 1985 release of Super Mario Bros. In the Challenge Mode, the player is able to select already completed levels, and go through them some more to complete various challenges within that level. The player is given an amount of red coins that need to be collected to complete the challenge, as well a score that must be reached to complete the challenge, as well. Completing the challenges to these courses help unlock other features within the game.
VS Mode:
This mode is also a new feature exclusive to Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and is not found in the 1985 release of the game. VS Mode allows two players to play on screen simultaneously, and complete each of the levels. The goal is to gain a higher score than the other player before the course is finally completed.
"For Super Players":
This mode is unlocked once doing various challenges throughout the game. In this mode, the player is able to play "The Lost Levels", or in other words, the original levels of the Japanese release of Super Mario Bros. 2. These levels are, as the name suggests, not present in the original game, nor were released in North America for some time. These levels are a bit more difficult than those found in the original release of the game, and give the player both new levels and extra challenges to complete.
Other Feature:
Located in game are many other features the player can choose from, such as a picture album of in game pictures, a records sheet, and a toy box. The toy box features unlockable content the player can go through and have fun with. The contents of the box are also unlocked throughout the courses and their challenge modes.
The over all run down for this game is as followed:
Graphics: 10/10
The graphics, while not too great as far as today's standards go, are still nostalgic and wonderfully classic. Much like a black and white movie's charm can be out done by today's standards, it just adds to feel and classic sense of the movie. The graphics in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe are upgraded a fair bit from the 1985 release of Super Mario Bros.. The players view size is reduced, making the action more up close. The sprites and graphics are cleaned up a bit and are less pixelated than within the original. And the over all game runs smoother and more fluently than the original, allowing for faster paced gameplay. Objects such as water and lava are also given moving sprites, as opposed to remaining still as they did in the 1985 release. Over all, the visuals of this game are given a ten out of ten.
Sound: 8/10
The sound in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is the exact same as the sound in the original game. The music all remained the same as well the sound effects, and nothing new is added. However, the sound is given an eight out of ten due to lack of over world music outside of the beeping of the level indicator. Music could have been added to the over world, however the over world menu just remains silent except for the beeping, giving a somewhat emotionless atmosphere in the game.
Addictiveness: 9/10
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is bound to keep the player addicted to it for some time. The new challenges that are offered to the player are very welcome add-ons and will keep the player coming back to unlock new features. However, in comparison to newer Super Mario titles, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe will begin to feel tedious and repetitive at times due to the same music playing and a very small variety of enemies. While the game is still guaranteed to entertain Super Mario fans or other players, it can get a little boring at times. The new challenges do help to counter this, however, so the overall addictiveness rating of the game earns a nine out of ten.
Story: 10/10
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe's story earns a perfect ten out of ten, due to the fact it shares the same story as the original 1985 release, and is the story that kick started the Super Mario Bros. universe. While the story has gotten tired in newer Super Mario titles, the story in this game is original to the game, and worked much to the games favor. Bowser kidnaps the princess, and Mario goes on a surreal adventure throughout various kingdoms and worlds to rescue her, dispatching bad guys along the way. This story was awesome then, and still works for this game now.
Depth: 8/10
Similar to the Addictiveness section of the review, while Super Mario Bros. Deluxe has a lot of new things to offer players of the original game, it still can become tedious at times. The game is very fun to play and the challenges all add something new to the experience, but the gameplay does run tired after long lengths of time. The depth has earned an eight out of ten.
Difficulty: 9/10
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe really does become quite difficult at times. The challenges throughout the game are challenging in both having the player search for red coins, while also having to complete the level quickly in order to get the score up to the needed amount. Other obstacles that are present in the original game as well are also still proving difficult in this version. Pit falls, small ledges, and hoards of well placed enemies still put up quite a challenge to even seasoned players at the game. The difficulty certainly shows a nine out of ten.
Overall: 9/10
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a very fresh and new take on the 1985 release of Super Mario Bros., being loaded with new challenges, smoother gameplay, and the same amount of fun the original game offers. The game is just as difficult as the original, and adds more to the difficulty with the new challenges for the player to complete. The unlockables within the game also aid in the game's addictiveness and replay value. The game does get to be tiring at times, but is still worth coming back to time and time again. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a wonderful remake of the 1985 Super Mario Bros., and is certainly worth playing through to fans of the Super Mario series. The overall score for Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is a nine of ten.

The original NES game gets ported onto the GBC with new stuff!   ihateschool2004
I really liked to play Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo NES console on my computer. But when I saw a different version of the original game on a different console, this meant one thing... SUPER MARIO BROTHERS DELUXE!
SMBDX had many different stuff including the Boo Race and Lost Levels (300,000 points to unlock), Challenge mode (collect 5 red coins and find a hidden box with an Yoshi egg and get many points as you can) and a Fortune Telling game (Pick a Extremely Lucky card and you'll get five 1ups, but if you pick a Extremely Unlucky card, you fail).
Super Mario Brothers was first released in 1985 on the NES, then later ported onto the GBC in 1999. Sounds amazing, eh?
Right, let's get onto the review.
GRAPHICS: 9/10
The graphics look the same to the original NES game. But with just brighter colours...? Luigi's in his normal self, with a green hat when he's small/big, and his small/big-self from the original NES game as his fire palette.
SOUND: 10/10
I really like the music and the sound very much. They also sound very different to the original game. Right back at ya!
ADDICTIVENESS: 9/10
I find it a little bit addicting. So for now... I'll be playing this over again and again. And again. Until I get a game over. Eh?
STORY: 10/10
The story is the same. The 7 Mushroom Retainers and the Princess are kidnapped by Bowser. Not that interesting to the same game... or is it?
DEPTH: 7/10
The depth is same to the game. But if I had Game Genie codes (e.g. Enemy dies when Mario touches it, lives never get taken away when you die, high jump like in the hack Mario Jump), it would make the game easier to complete.
DIFFICULTY: 6/10
Let's say that it's not really that hard to complete... or IS it?
Now for the overall rating: 10/10
This is a very good game to play. Although this is a sort of replica of Super Mario Brothers.
So that's my review for now. See you.
