Rock n' Roll Racing - racing to Rock n' Roll.... what more do you want? Missiles? Okay!   geeogree
Rock n’ Roll Racing is a game for the SNES made in 1993 by then Silicon & Synapse (now known as Blizzard Entertainment). The game features 4 vehicles pitted against each other in a racing battle. And battle is the key. This game is best known for its violent racing gameplay. Each vehicle is equipped with various power-ups many which are capable of destroying the other vehicles (temporarily). The game is a fast-paced shoot em up racing game in which getting blown up is not only expected but happens regularly.
Graphics 8/10 – the graphics for this game are quite good. Each planet has its own design scheme for it. They are not overly unique in theme but are pretty well made. One of the best part of the levels though is the “3D” effect many of the tracks get. There are ups and downs as well as jumps littered all over the map which can result in you being launched out of the race area. You just respawn if this happens but you are almost always in fourth place afterwards.
Another great part of this game is the vehicle designs. The first couple are pretty basic but then they get more interesting and fun to use. Being able to constantly upgrade your vehicle to a new one as you progress through the game is lots of fun. Keeps the racing fresh because you have new options and play styles that result. Along with the vehicles are the weapons that you get to use and the graphics for those, while simple, are pretty sweet. Blowing up other vehicles does not get old and seeing someone else’s vehicle blow up as you speed by is a great feeling.
Another nice feature is the variation in race track obstacles. Things like oil spills, lava pools, snow drifts and slime pits all get in your way while trying to complete a race. These are nice planet specific obstacles to keep each race a bit unique. To offset these hazards there are speed boost arrows spread around the various tracks to give you an extra boost of speed. There are a handful of places where not hitting these boosts makes a certain jump nearly impossible.
Sound 9/10 – this game took the moniker of Rock n’ Roll and made it literal. Here is a list of the songs this game has “versions” of (no lyrics):
"Paranoid" by Black Sabbath
"The Peter Gunn Theme" by Henry Mancini
"Highway Star" by Deep Purple
"Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf
"Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood
Now, with only 5 songs available to listen to you would think the music would get old but it does not. Every time one of these songs comes on you get pumped to go out there and blow up the other players!
And the music is not the only good part about the sound for this game. The announcer is pretty entertaining. He has things he says as the races start and he comments on things going on in the race as they happen. If you end up in last place, blow someone up, or take over 1st place he has something to say. There are more things he says I’m sure but those came to mind first. His voice is entertaining and keeps the race from feeling stale.
Addictiveness 10/10 – I love this game! I have played it so many times, like so many of the other games I have reviewed, and will likely play through it again. I think the best part about this game is that the gameplay is pretty straightforward and simple. You are in a race and everyone has weapons that can blow you up. Blow up the enemies before they blow you up and finish in the top 3 to score points/money in order to advance. However simple that sounds though the racing is so much fun that you can ignore how simple it is and really enjoy the game. The music really helps that along too.
Then combine all the great things about this game with having a friend to play with. Now instead of just blowing up the other racers you get to blow up your friends as well. You could also work together to dominate the other 2 racers in the map. It’s up to you. Having a 2 player mode definitely puts this game over in the addictiveness factor though. Otherwise I could not give it a 10.
Story n/a – it is a racing game. There is no story. I am pretty sure they could have made some sort of gladiator type story to this game but as far as I know there is not anything like that.
Depth 7/10 – there are six different characters that you can pick from to start the game. Each character has different bonus stats that affect how that character drives. The different variables that are affected are acceleration, top speed, cornering, and jumping. There are also 2 hidden characters that can only be accessed through secret means.
There are 5 different vehicles to choose from as you play the game. 2 of the initial vehicles are different looking versions of the same vehicle and the rest are upgrades as you progress through the various levels of the game. In order to be successful in later levels you need to upgrade your vehicle at least once or you will not stand a chance.
For each vehicle there are a bunch of upgrades available as well. There are multiple types of upgrades available depending on the vehicle you own. This is just a review so I won’t get into all the details of what kinds there are and how they differ. First is vehicle performance upgrades like engines, tires, shocks and armor. The other upgrades are related to the type of upgrade it is. There are front weapons, rear weapons and boosters. Each of the upgrades has a few options available for it as well depending on the vehicle chosen. I really like all the variety that the game has in this way. And each time you buy a new car you start the upgrade process over. I do suspect that the base engine of the first upgrade car is equivalent to the first upgrade of the first vehicle if that makes sense. It is not a total loss when you upgrade because the new vehicle is better in that way (I think) but it is always a tough choice to upgrade. Another advantage to upgrading is that each subsequent upgrade requires fewer vehicle performance upgrades in order to be maxed out. The hovercraft for example does not need shocks or tires but does need engine and armor upgrades. Little details like this are a nice way to keep each vehicle fresh from the others.
Another thing I like is the multiple ways to make money. There are money pickups littered on the ground of every race (5 $1,000 pickups I think). You also earn $1,000 every time you get credit for blowing up an enemy directly with a weapon. If you are able to lap another racer you can get $1,000 for that too. And placing 3rd or better earns you money as well. I like the variety of how you earn money because even if you place low you can still earn upgrades fairly quickly. You do not always have to be winning the race as long as you are doing these other things.
One place where this game falls a bit short is that each planet only has 4 different track styles. These all repeat depending on how many races take place on each planet. Some more track styles would have been nice per planet even if they were similar to other planet’s track styles later on. The different planet style would keep the tracks feeling unique because you would encounter them less often. That’s about the only depth criticism I can think of though.
Difficulty 6/10 – this is not a difficult game at all. Once I get upgraded from the first vehicle I can pretty well dominate the rest of the way as long as I play all the available races and upgrade as much as possible. It is still really easy to lose a race here and there but if you manage to upgrade smartly early on you should be able to stay ahead of the other vehicles upgrade pace in order to keep the difficulty down. However, if you do not upgrade to the next vehicle but instead upgrade one of the two starting vehicles then you are going to have a tougher time. A good challenge would be to try to beat the game with the starting vehicle fully upgraded. Still, this game is not overly challenging game.
Overall 8/10 – this is a great racing game. I put it up there with games like F-Zero as SNES racing classics. If you love Rock n’ Roll, you love racing games and you love blowing things up then this game is for you!

Rock and Roll Racing Review
Note before we start: This is a review for the SNES version
of the game. Somethings may be diffrent in other versions!
Released in 1993 by Blizzard Entertainment, Rock and Roll Racing
is the tip top of the top down racing genre. Even though the
game is really good. It is really underrated. There was also
a port to the Game Boy Advance. (Which I may cover in a later review)
For those who don't know, a top down racer is where you play the game
on a birds eye view, and you race! Pretty simple? The controls usually
take a bit getting used to especially if you play any of the Mario
Kart series and that's also the same with this game.
Anyways, let's start with the review.
Sound : 9/10
The songs in this game are your typical rock and roll songs.
But with this game they create a feeling that gets you so pumped up!
Seriously, I don't think the game would create the same atmosphere
without it. The sound effects are also on par with the music.
I think they make it easier to play the game, knowing whether
your driving or not and if you picked up a powerup. Of course,
this is standard with all racing games, but I think this game
makes it a little extra special. Just, be warned though, I have
occasional pauses within the music on emulators if you want
to play it yourself.
Graphics: 7/10
The graphics are nice to look at, but are not the best out of all the games
on the Super Nintendo. Tracks are bland, and they look the same in a world.
powerups look like typical lasers stolen from a another game. But the
worst is an armour powerup, they just look like stacks of bricks.
Contary to this, the menus look simplistic and effective, and the
planet textures and backgrounds on the level select screen (and
sometimes in the game.) look pretty amazing and that's why I gave
it a 7/10.
Gameplay: 8/10
The gameplay is simple. Race the other AIs or HIs to the finish
while deploying lasers, picking up armour powerups and avoiding
mines. While gameplay on Rookie can be boring, it can be
a great 'get into the game' type mode, it doesn't put up a challenge
at all, I found myself beating every single race in first. The
other two modes, may give you a bigger challenge but the best
bit of the game is racing against other HI's on Netplay or
on the console itself. If you play against other expert people,
you may find yourself really intense while playing it.
In the main story mode, you can also buy cars, upgrades, and
you can move to the next level/planet. The upgrades you can
get are quite expensive, and you may need to win an awful lot
of races. On Rookie, to move to the next level, you need 1400 points
which you can get from winning 4 races.
The track layouts though are TERRIBLE. Seriously, most of them
are like a square, or a weird shape, and it's really easy to bump in
to the sides, so here's a tip, at each turn, stop, and readjust your
self and then keep driving. That's the only thing I can give you.
Addictiveness/Depth: 5/10
It's not really that addictive, you'll get quite bored
after playing VS mode over and over, and you can't do
alot, sure, there's story mode, but it doesn't offer a
brilliant challenge.
Overall: 7.5/10
It can mediocre at times, but I feel this game can make a remake.
It has good controls, a excellent VS mode, but a too easy
Story Mode with no story. The graphics are quite good, but again
can be improved alot.
Overall, this game deserves a 7.5 out of 10 with a title of "Good"

A Very underrated game   Spicy
What happens when you go from 8 bit to 16 bit better graphics better   better sound and that's what this game is all about . It really used the 16 bit sound chip I think you are gonna be blown away because of this music this is an awesome game so lets go!!!!
First of all the graphics I don't think it has that impressive graphics like donkey Kong country there are some graphic glitches but the special effects are kind a neat like when your car blows up I give the graphics a 6
next up is the sound of course I have to give it a 10 just come on.the music really gets you ready for the game awesome soundtracks
really so many soundtracks and they really get you pumped but I can not really explain it if your into games that have good music then this must be a dream.
now the addictiveness  I would play this game all the freaking time its controls are addicting and there is just so much to do like improve your car and other stuff like that I give it a 8
and now for the last category depth wow so many things to do it blows my mind I first heard of this game because of mike matei and he also said that this game has much to offer you can buy new cars get turbo on your cars get guns and things like that if that is you're thing this is the game
OVERALL 7.8 Al tough this game is kinda flowed its pretty awesome and I say check it out!

R and R racing review   Naturio
I'm sorry if I am a little nostalgic because this is the first video game I EVER played but... ye Lets start with the graphics also this is my first review so be nice
Graphics: I personally myself don't care about graphics but I know other people do I personally really like the graphics of the game it looks smooth everything fits together good my eyes definitely don't hurt that's for sure the ground/map/whatever you like to call it pleases my eyes somehow but it might just be nostalgia
Sound: the music itself is good but... there is barely any music so it gets re-used ALOT most of the time your going to be hearing the same song every race which honestly I'm not happy about but at least the music is actually good but you may be asking if you said it re-uses music even if it is good then why did you give it a six? I have no idea why I asked that question for you but whatever, its because the sound effects don't annoy me and fit to the fact that it is a racing game and also makes sense to what is going on but the bigger reason is... The narrarator/host/that  guy that talks over your race, sure he may be annoying to some people but he never got annoying for me and I found him entertaining at times
Addictiveness: I don't know if this is just me but all racing games are rather addictive to me... but racing games WITH WEAPONS? And traps and other stuff That makes it more addicting TO ME (remember this is my opinion)  I don't really know what else to say here so lets move on
Story: the story is bad... I don't even think you can consider it much of a story but what can you expect its a racing game basically the story is your in a tournament and you travel between planets to win that tournament (of racing) sure it may appeal to certain young kids just because space entertains them for some reason but that doesn't mean the story is good
Depth: for a snes game its pretty big (I think I haven't beaten much games because I am bad) but from what I know at least you may ask why is it 4 then well its because it re-uses a lot of maps its rare to find different maps after you have done a bit of races on that planet which removes quite a bit of depth
Difficulty: the game has a difficulty setting so... yea I'm just gonna say this for medium difficulty its pretty average not too hard not too easy haven't seen any difficulty spikes so its a fair middle
Overall: 7.6
Hi guys so what do you think about my first review on my first game I ever played? Was it good was it bad? Constructive criticism please don't just randomly say bad in the chat I'm trying to improve here and I'll probably be making more reviews some time (probably on some easy games sense again... I'm bad at video games)

Not bad of a game   ncboi1312
I don't recall ever playing Rock N' Roll Racing before. But from the time I spent playing, I thought it was an o.k racing game for the snes. I did find Rock N' Roll Racing a little repetitive in the racetracks though. Meaning that you have to race 20 races to advance to the next level. Although I never did get to play Rock N' Roll Racing with a friend. I see alot of good times with this game if you have friends playing the game with you.
Rock N' Roll Racing did remind me a a good classic game on the NES call R.C. Pro Am. This was a pretty popular game for the people that can remember that far back in time. It had all the ingredients for a killer race game including bullets and turbos, but minus the hops, I think.
All in all, Rock N' Roll Racing is a good game that can be played alone just to see if you can master it, or with friends.
