Long time ago, a great war between Orakio and Laya devastated the planet. A thousand years later, a young Orakian prince named Rhys decides to marry the beautiful Maya, his heart's chosen one. But during the marriage ceremony, a strange creature appears and kidnaps the bride. Were those the legendary Layans who kidnapped the princess? Whatever the answer might be, Rhys has to find it out on his own - he must rescue his beloved one.

The gameplay system of Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom is similar to that of its predecessor in the series: the player navigates a party of characters on a top-down overworld, visiting towns, exploring 2D dungeons, and fighting randomly appearing enemies in turn-based combat. The most noticeable change in this installment is applied to the setting. Unlike all other Phantasy Star games, it is initially set in a medieval fantasy environment devoid of the series' characteristic sci-fi elements. Gameplay-wise, this influences the usage of techniques, which are restricted to characters with a sci-fi civilization background who later join the party.

An unusual feature of the game is its generation system. The game's story spans three generations of characters, beginning with Rhys and ending with his grandchildren. Specific instances of the plot prompt the player to choose between two young women for Rhys to marry. Depending on this choice, the player will control different main characters during the second generation. Later, a similar choice is offered to both possible children of Rhys, splitting the subsequent story into four branches.

When starting the game, sell your boots and buy an escapipe. Then, when you are sent to the dungeon, use it and you will escape. The King will congratulate you on your smart move but will ask you to reset the game.

You can skip the second generation entirely. After Rhys' quest, marry Lena (it won,t work if you marry Maia). When you can control Nial, use an escapipe and you will warp automatically back to Rhys' last dungeon! After defeating the King of Cille again, you will be able to marry Laya or Alair as usual. Be sure to choose Alair. After that, get the aero parts as usual. However, since you skipped the entire 2nd generation, you will need to get other vital items such as the sub parts and Laya's pendant (which won't work).
When back on Alisa III, go to the rebel hideout to get the sub parts (you can fly there). Then, go back to Aridia (through Landen) to get Laya back. Then go to Frigidia to get Laya's pendant, and pursue the game normally

 PS4 is my favorite but the entire series is really innovative and amazing. Any fan of RPG's should play through them.

 I agree JamDaMan, PS4 is definitely a better game but I enjoyed this one a-lot. PS 2 is actually my favorite of all 4

 This was the first RPG I ever played. Phantasy Star 4 supercedes it easily, but I have very fond memories of level grinding here.

 I really liked the game idea of having the chance to play several generations. A remake with better graphics would be worth playing it twice or even more often.

 One thing, that's really anoying, is, that the player's char is moving terribly slow. I only played part IV of the Series ... but this one has really monotone grafics! I did'nt expect that ...
